"Woman Arise!": Political Work in the Writings of Lu Dalton

Bench, Sheree Maxwell 01 January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
In 1872, Mormon plural wife, educator, and suffragist Lucinda Lee Dalton began writing fiery political essays and insightful poetry for the Woman's Exponent from her small community in southern Utah. Through her writings Dalton endeavors to shape the opinions of Exponent readers by working within public discourse toward the goal of equality for women. At times both optimistic and troubled, she uses the rhetorical strategies of humor, irony, reason, identification, and persuasion to educate men and women on disparities and to encourage women to participate actively in their own emancipation. She often engages in a dialogical process with other writers by crafting both polemic and poetic responses to specific writings in order to work toward greater insight on critical issues. As an essayist Dalton defends her religion, calls for the expansion of women's political and economic opportunities, and asserts that the elevation of women is crucial to achieving the potential of both sexes. As a poet she is a compelling writer who reveals in her poems her apprehensions and aspirations, her faith and feminism. Much of her poetry reflects the same commitment to reform that is clear in her essays, and she uses both genres do effective political work. This thesis uses a pluralist approach to recover Lu Dalton as an important early Mormon writer. It articulates her merit as a representative voice by evaluating the historical context and rhetorical function of her published writings in which she actively calls for broad societal reform, writing on women's roles, political rights, and relationship with God and men.

Humidity Structures in the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer / Fuktighetsstrukturer i det marina atmosfäriska gränsskiktet

Svensson, Andreas January 2002 (has links)
The turbulence structure over the sea was studied with the emphasis on humidity. The data sets used came from the island of Östergarnsholm outside Gotland in the Baltic Sea. The study included spectral and quadrant analyses of the wind, temperature and humidity parameters from one measuring level. The wave state of the sea was deduced from data from a wave rider buoy anchored 4 km from the site. Two turbulence instruments for humidity were compared, the MIUU instrument (hot wire) and an open pass infrared gas analyser from LI-COR. The comparison showed that the LI-COR instrument resolved the high frequency fluctuations of the humidity better. The unstable cospectra of the sensible and latent heat fluxes were studied and categorised. It was found that many cospectra have two or more maxima. The higher frequency maxima gained influence when the stratification became near neutral. The quadrant analyses showed that the structures of humidity flux were similar to those of the heat flux. The sources of the flux were studied using different ratios. The ratio between events of moist updrafts and dry downdrafts were extensively studied. It was shown that the events of moist updrafts were more dominating during swell than during growing sea. When the results of the spectral and quadrant analyses were combined, it was shown that the smaller sized eddies of heat dominate the events of warm updrafts and that the large eddies dominate the cold downdrafts. The bulk transfer number for moisture, the Dalton number (CE), was found to be almost constant with stratification for unstable runs. The mean value was calculated to (1.0±0.3)·10-3.

It is ascertained by the presence of the Amerindian, the mythical, aesthetic pursuits, policies and specific and general contexts around his works. Also it aims to analyze the way in which his works have influencing an imaginary and a perspective that is able to exercise and to read the symbolic universe that intermingles the Latin American sociopolitical universe. Work it attempts a look at poetizar, the special features of this human making in the hands of two personalities who are reveling in political elements, spiritual positions, negotiations and hybridisms, in the richness, complexity and heterogeneity of our continent. Topics of mandatory approach are utopia and myth, topics such as liberation theology, the word revolution and metaphors and imagined that concentrate much of the making of these two men of letters.

Em seguida, analisarse- á pormenorizadamente a narrativa do filme-resultado, procurando-se evidenciar o modo como Joaquim Pedro traduziu os contos, ao reelaborar a literatura de Trevisan no interior de um gênero cinematográfico de amplo apelo popular, a pornochanchada, a cujos traços mais recorrentes o cineasta adere, em princípio, apenas para subvertê-los na sequência / The research field in which this work can be inserted in is that of the intricate relations between literature and cinema, and its subject matter is Guerra conjugal (1975), a film adaptation by one of the exponents of Cinema Novo in Brazil, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, for some short-stories by Dalton Trevisan, one of the most important writers in Portuguese. Taking the adaptive effort as a critical translation and not at all accustomed, therefore, to the requirement of fidelity to the original work, the objective of this research is to demonstrate, by the analysis of the filmic narrative sequence dedicated to the decadent vampire figure of Nelsinho, the anthropophagic orientation that (1), in a positive sense, guides the creative method of the filmmaker Joaquim Pedro, whose work holds closely and fruitful dialogue with the Brazilian literature, but without undergoing the books; and (2), now in a negative way, permeates the loving battles of Guerra conjugal, which characters' intentions are to dominate, to impose, finally, to eat each other through the sexual experience, in a choice that lines up the film to at least two major inclinations of the cinema from that decade: sex as a political banner and the picture of decay through the chronic of private life. To achieve this goal, efforts will be made to identify the short-stories by Dalton Trevisan used for the composition of Nelsinho's path along the film as well as the main literary expedients of the writer from Curitiba, while considering the context of growth of the short-story in Brazil between the decades 1960-1970. Then it will be tried to analyze in details the narrative of the film adaptation, in a way to highlight how Joaquim Pedro translated the short-stories to the screen, rewriting Trevisan's literature in a filmic genre of a broad popular appeal, the pornochanchada, to which recurring features the filmmaker adheres in principle just to subvert them after

An Asian Stable Man and Royal Duke Revel with the Fury of an Afro-Asian God!

Tan, Jerry Lee 01 January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the actor's process in tackling the roles of Harry Dalton in Equus by Peter Shaffer, Duke Senior in As You Like It by William Shakespeare, and Dionysus in The Bacchae by Euripedes. Each production is assigned its own chapter, respectively. The chapters explore each role vocally, psychologically, and physically, including the examination of the Alexander Technique. Reflection on the experience of portraying the character and an evaluation of the actor's growth also transpires. The fourth chapter, Finding My Light, summarizes related observations and analysis as a result of performing all three roles. Finally, the fifth chapter, Curtain Call: A Tableau of Contemplation, deliberates on three years of graduate education. It features the benefits and shortcomings realized as a result of participating as one of the first students the Professional Studio Acting Track of Virginia Commonwealth University.

Post-Materialism: Its Impact on Presidential Election Year Issues, 1972-2000

Carter, John 14 June 2002 (has links)
This thesis examines the measurable effects of changing cultural values on American presidential election year issues from 1972 to 2000. Topics discussed: the long-term shift in cultural values and their impact on political parties, party support, and political priorities. There is congruence between the content of the two major political party platforms from 1972-2000 and the cultural priorities of party supporters as defined by their presidential vote. This relationship also holds true for the 'most significant issue facing the nation' variable in the National Election Studies and presidential vote choice. These results are reproduced in a completely different data set of active political participants (follow the news closely, participate in political campaigns, vote consistently) assembled by Sydney Verba. Both political parties must contend with the tensions that arise from differing cultural priorities of their supporters. This applies both within the parties as they must assemble winning electoral coalitions and between the parties which have taken on the cultural and political priorities of their strongest supporters. As the cultural priorities of major political party supporters shift, so have their quadrennial party platforms. / Master of Arts

The darkness in Trevisan: a re-reading of the vampire myth

This analysis will try to answer a core question: How can Dalton Trevisan rebuild one of the most ancient myths of the human culture the vampire one? To answer this problematic question, we have thought about three hypotheses: 1) The vampire myth is demystified in a parodical way, revealing his two faces: hero and victim; 2) The demystification is done through a sense of emptiness which can be observed in: the narrative, the hero and the narrator as well as in the discourse categories and all of this on the border between fiction and non-fiction; 3) The vampire myth demystification generates a social criticism effect in a time that life in the urban centers is in degeneration. The parody concept that we chose to guide the novel‟s analysis was taken from Bakhtin (1998) and Hutcheon (1985). These authors leaded us to a conclusion that Trevisan takes off the mythical vampire‟s aura. As he does this in the text, he transforms the myth in an unsacred one through resources like: love cannibalism and death, using the sex desire as his via cruces. In his trajectory in Curitiba, he allegorically configures the city as an urban Hades, in an attitude to criticize the values of a society in decomposition, the literary patterns in tension against the urban litter , which is characterized as a non-literary discourse / O objetivo dessa pesquisa é, por meio de um método comparativo, realizar a análise crítica do corpus - O vampiro de Curitiba, de Dalton Trevisan, que buscará responder a uma questão nuclear: como Dalton Trevisan reconstrói literariamente um dos mitos ancestrais da cultura humana o mito do vampiro?

Carvalho, Lílian Nunes da Silva 25 September 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T19:59:19Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Lilian Nunes da Silva Carvalho.pdf: 409499 bytes, checksum: d13a266aa0604cdea2c63e2acadfe3d2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-09-25 / The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze how Dalton Trevisan s motifs like double and the myth of the vampire shaped the journey of the protagonist Nelsinho. O Vampiro de Curitiba contains these issues. to be analyzed. We believe that Nelsinho suffers an inner conflict because of being both the subject and the object of his own anxieties; therefore he assumes the role of a vampire in order to obtain sexual satisfaction by means of seduction. We started by reflecting on this duality and what else characterizes him. In the case of a diffuse subject we chose to look at the protagonist from the perspective of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung. We noticed that in the Freudian perspective, double rises from the conflict between two psychic instances, the Id and Superego. The first one is impulsive and the second is repressive. The Ego acts as the mediator and is responsible for doing what the winner demands. The issue about double is related to the Unheimlich, a term used by Freud to describe the ambivalence between what is known and what is unknown. To Jung the approach to duality occurs through a self-regulatory system responsible for the oscillation between opposite poles; that is, the conscious (persona) and unconscious (shadow). These poles are used to characterize the integration of the personality of the human being. Then we argued the function of myth and the origin of the myth of the vampire, because such a discussion is necessary in order to understand the relationship between the characters Dracula and Nelsinho: Dracula needs blood to keep alive and Nelsinho needs sex in order not to die. As the author does not show us their stories in linear sequences, we also analyze the characters by reading several stories and piecing together the fragments of the character we found in each story. We conclude that Nelsinho is a dual person because he always lives the antagonism which makes him to be with between being both a subject and an object of love relationships. He is linked to the vampire just by looking for the element that keeps him alive / O propósito desta dissertação consiste em analisar, na escrita de Dalton Trevisan, a configuração de temas como o duplo e o mito do vampiro no percurso do protagonista Nelsinho.

García Núñez de Cáceres, Jorge Federico 14 December 2010 (has links)
In this work, I explain that the focus of criticism on the Central American poetry of the second half of the twentieth century has emphasized its political content. I argue, however, that such a limited view obscures the broader import of this poetry and its place in Latin American literature. By reading the work of Nicaraguan Daisy Zamora, Guatemalan Otto René Castillo, and Salvadoran Roque Dalton with an emphasis on affectivity rather than revolution, I suggest a different relationship between the poet and society, one that is not limited to the marginal figure of the mujer soldado, the poeta guerrillero or the poeta marxista in conflict with all societal norms. Rather, I argue that my study portrays the complex subjectivity of the speaker/poet not unlike that of non-revolutionary poets, as well as his or her multi-dimensional affective connections to family and society. At the same time, an analysis of affect in this poetry allows us to reconsider the nature of the revolutionary figure itself, no longer a myth or a romantic hero, but an individual inserted in society in a more complex way. In Chapter 1, “Daisy Zamora: De la mujer-soldado a la mujer-mujer”, I contend that an analysis of affectivity of her poetic work reveals how personal memory constructs an individualized subjectivity different from that of a woman-soldier. In the second chapter, “Otto René Castillo: De la lucha revolucionaria a la soledad del poema,” I argue that a negative connotation of romantic love is projected in his poems bringing about traces of existential solitude in the lyric subjectivity. Furthermore, Castillo’s poetry elicits a binary opposition between “the people” and the guerrillero in which the former is portrayed as lacking of agency. The third chapter, “Roque Dalton: y/o subjetividad en crisis,” reveals the ways in which the Salvadoran poet textualizes a poetic of disenchantment by way of projecting disdain and contempt to the “motherland.” In conclusion, my approach pinpoints how Zamora, Castillo and Dalton share the same preoccupations, affects and ways to conceive reality, which are also similar to the practices of those poets whose works are better-known given their national origin or because their poetic production has been widely studied by academia.
