The aim of this work is to examine the definition of art proposed by the Arthur C. The second part of this work focuses to demonstrate how Danto extracts the necessary and sufficient conditions of his definitions of art by the experiments of indiscernibles. The third and last part of this work examines the relationship between the definition of art and Dantos philosophy of art history, especially his thesis about the end of art.

Lavagnino, Nicolás 09 April 2018 (has links)
Ontological Mislocations', Modes of Conciousness and History: Indiscernibles, Displacement and Horizons of Possibility in the Philosophy of Arthur Danto”. In this article my purpose is to trace the links between three key elements in Arthur Danto’s philosophy: first, the capital consideration, for philosophical purposes, of human beings as ens representans, departing from the elucidation of a type of cognitive episode that Danto called basic”. Secondly,I am concerned with the recurring appeal to a plane of consciousness that supports a dual characterization in terms of the pair inside/outside and enables alogical space that is characteristic of philosophy as a reflective mode. Finally, I will treat a form of cognitive failure that Danto considered fundamental to the philosophical perspective, which leads to a specific type of restructuring of our ordinary system of beliefs. What I contend is that in Danto’s philosophical system these three elements become intelligible from the postulation of an effectual background that the author calls objective historical structure”, which is characterized in terms of the horizons of possibility and impossibility that it delineates. These figures of historical-temporal possibility and impossibility constitute the matrix of historicity itself and also contribute decisively to shaping the permanent nucleus of dantean philosophical concerns.

The present dissertation consists on the analysis and bibliographical revision of North American philosopher Arthur Danto’s work. The aim of this research is to seek in Danto’s works his “idea” of the artist and to analyse the way North American artist Andy Warhol is used as an example and as the main figure in this idea. Danto does not structure this idea conceptually, however is is possible to extract it by means of his examples in which artists are in. The research was divided into three moments: Danto’s theoretical fundaments and influences that sustain his main concepts, which are the concept of art and of the “end of art”; usage of examples of artists in Danto’s work and demonstration of his “ideia” of artist; Andy Warhol’s analysis according to Danto and other authors. In the course of the dissertation, there will be stablished dialogues between Danto and Georg Hegel, Clement Greenberg, Thierry de Duve, Hal Foster, Lucy Lippard, Hector Obalk.

Luna Polo, Carolina 01 February 2019 (has links)

Theory of the end of art by Danto and its implication / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Danto de yi shu zhong jie lun ji qi hou guo.

Danto thinks that the development of art history was over in 1964, because Andy Warhol's "Brillo Box" appeared. We can no longer make a distinction between this work of art and the real Brillo Box, which is just a commonplace object. However, the end of art does not mean we cannot make art anymore, nor does it mean that art has lost its value. It just means the concept of art is exhausted. No new style of art can emerge. There is no direction for art history to go on. Danto told us that there are two consequences of the end of art. One is we can find the essence of art and define art in terms of non-manifest properties. The other is pluralism. / Danto was influenced by Hegel's view of art history, he used "self understanding of art" to interpret the development of art, and he thought that the development of modernist art is to find out the essence of art. The end of art means that art can no longer understands itself, it should pass this mission to philosophy. Although generally speaking I agree with that the interpretation of art history given by Danto, I think the end of modernism does not necessarily mean the end of art, and also there is no need to interpret the development of modernist art only from the perspective of seeking the essence of art. Moreover, I do not accept the definition proposed by Danto. I want to argue that we can define art when there is no essence. Besides discussing the problems of the end of art and the definition of art, I have also discussed problems that are related to pluralism, such as evaluation of art and postmodernism. / Adviser: Chang Yuan Liu. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-02, Section: A, page: 0599. / Electronic reproduction. L'instinct à l'oeuvre

Cloutier, Sébastien 02 1900 (has links) (PDF)
