Där ingen ser en : Unga kvinnors trygghetskänsla i Ålidhemsskogen / Where no one sees you : Young women's sense of safety in the Ålidhem forest

Lindh, Frida January 2022 (has links)
Many young women feel insecure when moving around in public spaces because they feel that they lack a sense of safety. This leads to the mobility of these women being restricted due to the feeling of not being safe. The Ålidhem forest is an area in Umeå municipality that is located between the districts Ålidhem and Carlshem. Moving in the forest during the day can be experienced as peaceful while the same area can be transformed into an experience of unsafety and uncertainty when the darkness has settled, and less people are in movement. The purpose of this study is to examine young women's experience of security in the Ålidhem forest.  The results from this study are based on a qualitative method through semi-structured interviews with seven young women who move in the area with varying extent during both the day and the evening. The results from this study show that young women appreciate staying in the area during the day but experience the forest as an unsafe place they rather avoid during the night. The main reason for this is the dense forest, limited lightning and the feeling of being alone in the forest in the evenings. According to the women from the study, the municipality should take physical measures to improve the design of the area in order for the forest to be perceived as safer. Planning a safe environment contributes to more people wanting to move around in that area, which in turn will lead to fewer people being limited.

Urban Dark Acupuncture for Darkness: Value of Darkness in Pedestrian Experience of Sudirman Street, Jakarta

Amilawangi, Dane January 2020 (has links)
As much as we thought about artificial lighting in planning of our urban nightscape, it is necessary to balance it with consideration regarding darkness. In response to the problems caused by artificial lighting; such as light pollution and disruption to human circadian rhythm, darkness should be seen as a value that brings balance for the environment. There are nine values of darkness in urban illumination; efficiency, sustainable, ecology, healthiness, happiness, connects to nature, stellar visibility, heritage & tradition, wonder & beauty (Stone, 2019). In Designing for Darkness, Stone (2019) described three concepts to bring darkness into urban illumination design; Incremental Darkening, Environmentally Responsive Lighting, and Urban (Dark) Acupuncture. Urban Acupuncture is an effort to revitalize area and its surroundings through intervention in the strategic key point. (Leiner, 2014). In terms of urban lighting, the concept of Urban (Dark) Acupuncture described as an attempt to accentuate a strategic location in a city with darkness (Stone, 2019). This master thesis aims to apply the Urban (Dark) Acupuncture concept into a conceptual lighting design proposal for Sudirman Street, Jakarta. Functioned as a Central Business District of Jakarta, Sudirman Street is considered as a strategic key point for the intervention. The design proposal will be focusing on pedestrian facility of the street, and final result will be evaluated by the user. Keywords: Urban Lighting, Urban Acupuncture, Light Pollution, Darkness

Att sätta regler för, skriva och spela barn(dom) : En komparativ diskursanalys av rollspelssytemet The World of Darkness / Making rules for, playing and writing a child(hood) : A comparative discourse analysis of the role-playing system The World of Darkness

Sääf, Ida January 2018 (has links)

The Rhetoric of Androgyny: Gender and Boundaries in Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness

Gleason, Benjamin P. (Benjamin Patrick) 08 1900 (has links)
The androgyny of the Gethenians in The Left Hand of Darkness is a vehicle for Ursula Le Guin's rhetoric concerning gender roles. Le Guin attempts to make the reader identify with an ideal form of androgyny, through which she argues that many of the problems of human existence, from rape and war to dualistic thought and sexism, are products of gender roles and would be absent in an androgynous world. The novel also links barriers of separation and Othering with masculine thought, and deconstructs these separative boundaries of opposition, while promoting connective borders which acknowledge difference without creating opposition. The novel thus criticizes gendered thought processes and social roles, because they lead to opposition and separation.

Och då du länge blickar in i en avgrund, blickar avgrunden också in i dig. : Ekofobi och kolonial ångest i Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness och Algernon Blackwoods The Man Whom the Trees Loved

Söderlund Kanarp, Melika January 2024 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine the manifestation of ecophobia in negative emotional expressions in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and “The Man Whom the Trees Loved” by Algernon Blackwood and how this relates to colonialism and colonial anxiety. The term ecophobia, popularized by Simon C. Estok, describes deep rooted, negative emotions and attitudes towards the natural environment that is prevalent in most of humanity. This thesis implements the theory of the origin of ecophobia, described by Brian Deyo as a fear of nature’s indifference towards humans and how it confronts us with our own dreaded mortality. According to theories on ecophobia, colonialism has been a successful method to expand western control over the nature that has been perceived as a threat to our existence.Previous research of Heart of Darkness and “The Man Whom the Trees Loved” have not delved into how the negative emotions toward nature and the primitive relates to the root cause of the fears – the fear of our own mortality. This thesis aims to fill that gap. The analysis shows how the main characters of each work display negative emotions according to three categories related to theories of ecophobia: a fear of the primitive core of the civilized man, a fear of transgressions that threatens western narratives and methods used to cover up the fact that we are mortal animals, and a fear of attack against ourselves or our culture that occurs when the methods and narratives fail.

Jung. Depression is a subject frequently heard, either presented in formal academic texts or chats among acquaintances. This theme is seen in the history of human kind since the first historical documents, however, its definition would suffer changes according to the point of view men had of themselves. The theory developed by Carl G. Jung depicted that depression might have a creative function for those who suffer from it, as long as the ego encounters the unconsciousness. Joseph Conrad, the author of Heart of Darkness, presented depressive symptoms in his life. He had a life in which he lost his parents at a young age and decided to live alone in the sea, as a sailor. These situations with different obstacles prevented his psychic to develop a strong structure as an adult. His traumas and his sea journeys inspired him to express his private contents and contemplate subjective themes about the human existence. Heart of Darkness presents a plethora of symbols. Some of them express the archetypal journey to Hades’ world, the inner darkness, as the depression process that may result in the transcendence of the consciousness / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar os símbolos da obra Coração das Trevas, em busca de elementos da depressão por meios da teoria junguiana.

The Truth of Night in the Italian Baroque

Lindsey, Renee J. 01 January 2015 (has links)
In the sixteenth century, the nocturne genre developed in Italian art introducing the idea of a scene depicted in the darkness of night. This concept of darkness paired with intense light was adopted by Caravaggio in the late sixteenth century and popularized by himself and his followers. The seemingly sudden shift towards darkness and night is puzzling when viewed as individual occurrences in artists’ works. As an entire genre, the night scene bears cultural implications that indicate the level of influence culture and society have over artists and patrons. The rising popularity of the theater and the tension between Protestantism and Catholicism intersected to create a changing view on the perception of darkness and light. This merging of cultural phenomena affected Caravaggio and his contemporaries, prompting them to develop the nocturne genre to meet the growing demands for darker images.
