Flood Impact Analysis using GIS : A case study for Lake Roxen and Lake Glan - Sweden

<p>Floods are common natural disaster occurring in most parts of the world. This results in damage to human life and deterioration of environment. There have been immense uses of technology to mitigate measures of flood disaster i.e. structurally and non-structurally. Undoubtedly, structural measures are very expensive and time consuming which involves physical work like construction of dams, reservoirs, bridges, channel improvement, river diversion and other embankments to keep floods away from people. Whereas non-structural measures is concerned with planning like flood forecasting and warning, flood plain zoning, relief and rehabilitation for reducing the risk of flood damage to keep people away from floods. Thus, non-structural measures involve analysis, planning providing spatial information on maps with high accuracy in less time. Non-structural measures can help decision maker to plan an effective emergency response towards flood disaster. A one of the good way to plan non-structural measures is to analyze impact of flood in the flood prone areas. The thesis tries to analyze impact of flood on environment along the demarcated flood prone areas of Lake Roxen and Lake Glan in Östergötland County, Sweden. The thesis also proposes how to use current flood information during flood emergency utilizing geographical information system. This provides spatial information for area in the flood zone for assessment regarding flood vulnerability.</p><p>Using map overlay analysis in GIS software (ArcGIS); flood prone areas and topographic data along Lake Roxen and Lake Glan were digitized from PDF maps. Thus, the thesis work is an effort to analyze impact of flood when areas along Lake Roxen and Lake Glan are flooded. ESRI® GIS software Arc Map 9 and Arc View 3.3 is used for data preparation, integrating, analyzing, and spatial data with attribute table information. Finally, to show GIS can be an effective tool for development of flood emergency system as a part of disaster preparedness by the decision makers.</p>

Anbudsstrategi vid offentlig upphandling : Beslutsmodell vid analys av anbud och prissättning hos Permobil AB

Syftet med studien har varit att undersöka om det är möjligt att tillämpa en beslutsmodell för att lösa ett problem avseende anbudsstrategi vid offentlig upphandling. När ett företag har en kund som omfattas av lagen om offentlig upphandling gäller särskilda regler vid upphandlingar. För ett företag är det viktigt att känna till dessa regler vid inlämning av anbud. Detta är dock oftast inte tillräckligt för att vinna en upphandling, eftersom det då också gäller att deras produkts jämförelsepris är lägre än konkurrenternas. En beslutsmodell, baserad på data från tidigare upphandlingar, har tagits fram för att kunna underbygga ett verktyg gällande anbudsstrategi. Beslutsmodellen är uppbyggd av diverse teorier som beslutsmatris, beslutsträd, lognormal fördelning och förväntat monetärt värde. Tillvägagångssättet har bestått av insamling av information och data via intervjuer, samt andra källor såsom litteratur, artiklar, uppsatser och upphandlingar, där metoden design science har använts. Utifrån en generell beslutsmatris och ett beslutsträd samt beräkningar har beslutsmodellen kunnat tas fram. Beslutsmodellen är i första hand avsedd för att underbygga ett verktyg för företag som är leverantör av eldrivna rullstolar men skulle även kunna appliceras i andra typer av upphandlingar. Beslutsmodellen kan ge stöd till ett verktyg som i sin tur skulle kunna användas av beslutsfattare. Beslutsfattarna får dock inte endast utgå från dess information, som är baserad på tidigare upphandlingar, utan bör också analysera konkurrenternas nutidssituation. When a company has costumers comprehended by the laws in public procurement, there are certain rules involved. For a company it is important to be aware about these rules, when setting their bids. Though this is often not enough for a winning procurement, because of the fact that the products comparison prices need to be lower than the competitors'. A decision model, based on data from earlier procurements, has been developed to reinforce a tool with bidding strategies. The decision model is composed by various theories, like decision matrix, decision tree, lognormal distribution and expected monetary value. The procedure through the study has contained data and information acquisition via interviews and other references like literature, articles, thesis and procurements. Based on a general decision matrix and a decision tree, as with calculations, the decision model has been generated. The decision model is mainly designed to reinforce a tool for companies supplying electric wheelchairs to costumers but could also be applicable in other types of procurements. The decision model could be a support when constructing a tool, which consequently could be used by decision makers. The decision makers can however not only adopt the ideas based on earlier procurements. They also need to analyse the competitors’ situations in present time. The thesis attempts to outline the extent to which the decision-making role of nurses is utilized, and the main factors that affect decision-making of nurses within the scope of provision of nursing care. The research has found out that nurses utilize their decision-making role to an insufficient extent hence the sense and purpose of decision-making must be emphasised again. This task may be assumed by managing nurses. Managing nurses may also contribute by more effective defending of competences of nurses. From the factors needed by nurses for effective decision-making, attention should be paid particularly to education. It is necessary to make possible for nurses to extend their knowledge and thus to obtain theoretical insight (e.g. in respect of decision-making) to be used by them while providing care to a patient/client.

How China and Nordic countries conceptualise Corporate Social Responsibility : – A study of senior decision-makers’ statements within the banking sector

The “statement” from senior decision-maker is a section in the sustainability           report, where the most “senior decision-maker” of the institution (such as CEO,            chairman, or equivalent senior position) gives the personal view about the           relevance of sustainability to the ​institution and its strategy for addressing           sustainability. Such a statement is one medium used by company leaders to            communicate their attitudes and values to stakeholders in sustainability reports.          Under commercial circumstances, sustainability is also referred to as Corporate          Social Responsibility (CSR). This paper analyzes Chinese and Nordics senior decision-makers’ perception of CSR within the banking sector. The research sample consists of statements of senior decision-makers from sustainability reports of four Chinese banks, respective four Nordic banks. Previous studies show that CSR conception is influenced by cultural and social backgrounds. By analyzing respective Chinese/Nordic senior decision-maker’s statement, this study isaimingtofindout how Chinese/Nordic culture and social concepts are promoted in their respective bank institutions, and therefore lead to different CSR focus and strategies. The results from the study show that Chinese senior decision-makers’ statements are strongly influenced by t​raditional Chinese philosophy and social background, especially Confucian and Taoism, as well as​Xi Jinping’s guidelines delivered at the 19th National Congress of the Communist and the 13th Five-Year Plan. In relation to the Nordic senior decision-makers the gender equality and racial equality were noted. <p>Is North America vulnerable to widespread electrical blackout from natural or man-made disasters? Yes. Are electric utilities and critical infrastructure (CI) operators prepared to maintain CI operations such as, hospitals, sewage lift stations, food, water, police stations etc., after electrical blackout to maintain National security and sustainability? No. Why? Requirements to prioritize electrical restoration to CI do not exist as a requirement or regulation for electrical distribution operators. Thus, the CI operators cannot maintain services to the public without electricity that provides power for the critical services to function. The problem is that electric utilities are not required to develop or deploy a prioritized systematic plan or procedure to decrease the duration of electrical outage, commonly referred to as blackout. The consequence of local blackout to CI can be multi-billion-dollar financial losses and loss of life for a single outage event attributed to the duration of blackout. This study utilized the review of authoritative literature to answer the question: “Can a plan be developed to decrease the duration of electrical outage to critical infrastructure”. The literature revealed that electric utilities are not required to prioritize electrical restoration efforts and do not have plans available to deploy minimizing the duration of blackout to CI. Thus, this study developed a plan and subsequent model using Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) to decrease the duration of blackout by providing incremental electrical service to CI.</p>

Designing an intelligent home environment

While a lot of efforts have been on outdoor intelligent systems, internal living environment system that suits the occupancy’s behaviour has not received much attention. The intelligent living environment designed in this study has three components; the physical world (environment), the database and the decision maker. The study sought to design a model that senses ever changing home conditions such as lights, doors and windows. Other variables that were looked at include, but not limited to the number of people in the room and inside thermodynamics and human activity. Global information such as temperature, gas or electricity usage and time of the day will also be received by the system through various sensing facilities. The information will be sent to a rules engine for a decision on an appropriate action to be taken. The action may include just turning off the lights, in the case of a mild abnormality or a high alert to an emergency response unit in a most severe case. The study proposes a context aware and proactive neural networks control system to control a living environment with a main focus on the aged citizens living alone. The proposed living environment was not developed to an actual or “mock” building containing a representation of subset of sensors, actuators and controllers as used in the actual systems due to lack of funding. However, the study will report on the modelling and simulation of the home system variables based on the chosen Artificial Intelligent technique using MATLAB/SIMULINK. As money laundering is a global threat, with approximately US$800 billion to US$2 trillion being laundered yearly, it is important to come up with new and stronger solutions to combat illicit activities. Among the most exploited entities for money laundering are financial institutions, and more specifically banks. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis has been to investigate the usability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a decision-maker in the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) department to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. Moreover, the main research question was to explore the usability of AI as a decision-maker within AML operations. To enable this, an important aspect was to understand what regulatory and compliance requirements are demanded on AI from the AML departments. Thereafter, it was necessary to understand AI’s technical functionalities to facilitate the department’s daily operations. The literature review presented the fundamentals of AML and their precautionary actions. Furthermore, in the second phase of the literature review, the fundamentals of AI were investigated. Lastly, a combination of the topics of AML and AI were reviewed to identify techniques that the AML department can implement. Moreover, the methodology of the thesis consisted of a qualitative research design with an inductive approach. In the findings, a framework was constructed from the obtained results (second order themes). Subsequently, those themes were further developed into aggregated dimensions, which were extensively elaborated on in the conclusion. Thereafter, the dimensions were categorized into either the compliance criteria or the functional criteria. Also, the dimensions were presented in the order of priority based on how critical they are. To answer the main research question, AI is usable in the AML department as a decision-maker when considering the aggregated dimensions. Essentially, AI can successfully be implemented into the AML department’s daily operations when all the dimensions are achieved. / Då penningtvätt är ett globalt hot, där det uppskattas att det årligen tvättas 800 miljarder till 2 biljoner amerikanska dollar, är det viktigt att komma med nya och motståndskraftigare lösningar som bekämpar illegala verksamheter. Finansiella institutioner är bland de mest utsatta enheterna för penningtvätt, däribland banker som är mest exponerade. Därför var syftet med masterexamensarbetet att undersöka användbarheten av artificiell intelligens (AI) som beslutsfattare på avdelningen som bekämpar penningtvätt och finansiering av terrorism. Vidare var huvudfrågeställningen att utforska användbarheten av AI som beslutsfattare inom arbetsuppgifterna för avdelningen som bekämpar penningtvätt. För att möjliggöra detta var en viktig aspekt att förstå vilka lagstadgade- och efterlevnadskrav som ställdes på AI från avdelningen som bekämpar penningtvätt. Därefter måste man förstå AI:s tekniska funktioner för att underlätta avdelningens dagliga verksamhet. I litteraturstudien presenterades de grundläggande faktorerna för bekämpning av penningtvätt och deras försiktighetsåtgärder. Vidare i den andra fasen av litteraturstudien undersöktes de grundläggande faktorerna för AI. Slutligen granskades litteratur som behandlade en kombination av ämnena bekämpning av penningtvätt och AI för att identifiera tekniker som avdelningen för bekämpning av penningtvätt kan implementera. Dessutom bestod masterexamensarbetet av en kvalitativ forskningsdesign med en induktiv forskningsprocess. I resultatdelen framställdes ett ramverk utifrån de erhållna resultaten (andra ordningens teman). Därefter utvecklades dessa teman vidare till aggregerade dimensioner, som beskrevs utförligt i slutsatsen. Därpå blev dimensionerna kategoriserade i antingen efterlevnadskriterier eller funktionella kriterier. Dimensionerna presenterades även i prioritetsordning baserat på deras kritiska innebörd. Studien föreslog att AI är användbart på avdelningen som bekämpar penningtvätt som beslutsfattare när de aggregerade dimensionerna tas i beaktning. I huvudsak kan AI framgångsrikt implementeras i avdelningens dagliga verksamhet för att bekämpa penningtvätt när alla dimensioner har uppnåtts.
