Arrangement Design Studies : the introduction of the digital wall in domestic environments / Designstudier av införandet av den digitala väggen i hemmiljöerAbdipour, Morteza January 2021 (has links)
This research focuses on the emergence of 'digital walls' that can project images onto almost all or even the entirety of interior (and perhaps exterior) walls, and what implications this might have for how we arrange our rooms. It demonstrates the arrangement, i.e., the way that domestic products are arranged physically, of rooms changes in the domestic environment in a complex scenario when using large screens. Due to the fast-growing demand for large screens, this product could potentially be available to be used by people in their home environments; however, it does not yet exist in reality at this scale. Constructing large screens can be carried out using different production methods. Here, this concept is called the digital wall, a very thin wall-sized interactive screen. The characteristics of the digital wall will vary to be able to create different scenarios. One such scenario is a space in the home where the surface of the wall is covered with screens, which allows multiple possibilities to experience and interact with digital content. In this research, the social gathering space of homes, nowadays called the living room, is considered as a highly relevant space for installing the digital wall. In this space, the conceptual framework outlines the basic elements of the research and demonstrates the relationships between people’s interactions with the digital wall and domestic products in the domestic environment. I show two examples from design history to understand how arrangement changes impact the home environment: the transformation of the parlor to the living room, and entry of the television into the living room. These two examples are focused on the place in the home where people gather for socializing. The discussion of these examples led to the elaboration of the relationships between the elements in the conceptual framework. I explored relevant design research methodologies to bring this future scenario into the present to understand the relationships between people and the digital wall. I applied research through design and the constructive design research approaches to frame the design research methodology. In this thesis, I set up seven series of design studies in two cluster groups: Supportive studies and Main studies. All of the design studies were conducted in the Design Research Lab, the actual space for carrying out the design experiments, prototyping the digital wall, and the setting of the experiments for user participation. The Lab was fully equipped with relevant technology and allowed me to use multiple methods to collect data while people were experiencing the design study sessions. The Lab was useful as a platform to understand user experiences, barriers for interactions as well as people's experiences in a simulated space of a domestic environment. The main contribution of this research is to understand the forms of arrangement changes when people use the digital wall in homes. The research demonstrates two significant implications that are seen in two forms of arrangements: tangible arrangement and imperceptible arrangement. These findings are useful for both designers and users of the elements of domestic contexts and the relations that can be shaped by the presence of a digital wall in home environments. This understanding may provide design guidelines in future scenarios in which the digital wall is used in homes. The findings are also beneficial for designing the domestic environment, improving the arrangement of space, and raising the requirements for designing domestic products.

Initiatives that go beyond seeking only profit generation are gaining more space in the business environment, not only as parallel CSR projects, but also as their main strategy. These initiatives are related to the understanding of the important role of private initiative in transforming and solving current social problems. In this context, the Conscious Capitalism (CC) approach defines that the purpose of a business must go beyond generating profits and value to shareholders. There must be a central purpose for the company to exist. Another business approach that causes market shifts and breaks paradigms in the traditional corporate ecosystem is the evolution of platform business. In these organizations the interactions between two end users are commercialized and the added value for both parties needs to be clear in order to develop the necessary network. This dissertation unites these two approaches, with the purpose of proposing the configuration of a framework that will support entrepreneurs. In order to do so, the design research method was adopted, consisting of five steps (problem awareness, suggestion, development, evaluation and conclusion), which allows the construction and validation of an artifact. After the awareness of the problem and analysis of the literature, the first version of the framework was elaborated. The validation was divided into three phases, totaling 12 experts interviewed and each stage ending with a new version of the artifact. The final framework is comprised of a core that understands purpose, initiation of network development and financial support; four static quadrants: Technology, Conscious Management, Leadership and Network; in addition to elements divided into two levels of evolution within the quadrants that correspond to their areas of knowledge. It is understood that this study adds knowledge since it establishes a connection between the approaches of the platform business and Conscious Capitalism, exemplifying how this can occur and its transforming potential.

Psychosocial inclusivity in design : a definition and dimensionsLim, Yonghun January 2018 (has links)
Significant changes in demographics, including a growing ageing population and a larger number of people with disabilities, have made inclusive design an increasingly relevant notion in the design of products, services, and environments. However, there is considerable concern that the concept of inclusive design is rather limited in its current definition and applications and has not yet been thoroughly applied. This is possibly due to the conventional understanding and application of inclusive design, mainly rooted in and focused on physical aspects of inclusion, such as accessibility, usefulness, and usability. This limited focus has led various voices in design academia and industry to speak of the need for further consideration of the psychological and social aspects of inclusive design as the next step to facilitate inclusive design, and make impact. In this research, inclusivity on psychological and social levels, is referred to as "psychosocial inclusivity". The concept of psychosocial inclusivity, including a clear definition thereof and its application, is rather limited in the existing literature. Therefore, this PhD research aims to further explore this concept by establishing a clear definition and the dimensions thereof. In order to achieve this, an initial definition and dimensions of the psychosocial inclusivity in design are established through a critical review of existing literature from both social science and design perspectives. The initial definition and dimensions are then developed, refined, and evaluated through four empirical studies: the Delphi study (expert survey); field study I (ethnographic interviews with mobility scheme users); field study II (ethnographic interviews, creative workshop, and observation of older individuals); and an evaluation study (online survey of design academics and professionals). These studies have been designed based on a triangulation approach in order to enhance the reliability and validity of the outcomes. At the end of this research, the definition and dimensions for psychosocial inclusivity in design (Cognitive, Emotional, Social, and Value dimensions) are proposed. The outcomes of this research can enhance the understanding and knowledge of the concept of psychosocial inclusivity in design. Also, the definition and dimensions can be used by design academics and professionals or third parties to consider psychosocial aspects. The dimensions also can be developed as a complete set of framework or toolkit through further research.

Our research area is around the strategic decision within organizations. More precisely, it is applicable as an aid for strategic decision-making and detecting useful information for such decisions. On the one hand, the ‘information from the field' from the contacts between individuals, business meetings, etc. is always essential for managers. On the other hand, national and international newspapers can provide a considerable volume of data that can be defined as the raw data. However, besides these classical sources, gathering information has changed dramatically with the advent of information technology and particularly internet that is related to our research. We chose the area for the acquisition of ‘information from the field' provided by the national daily newspapers: the Colombian newspaper which concerns to our empirical study. In order to detect weak signals of potential internet base issues which help managers to discover and understand their environment, we proposed a research based on “Action Design Research” type and then applied for designing, building and testing an artifact to gain the required information. The artifact has been designed and built in two phases that is included of using theoretical concepts about the data overload, environmental scanning particularly the “anticipatory and collective environmental scanning model” (VAS-IC®) and the desirable characteristics of strategic decision making support systems. After its construction, the artifact applied to real experimentation that has allowed us to evaluate its effectiveness. Afterwards, we improved our knowledge about the relevance of digital data in the decision making process. The results of all the involved decision makers have been able to integrate these new practices into their information needs.

Designprinciper för digitala DevOps-bedömningsmodeller / Designprinciples for digital DevOps assessment modelsSandberg, Tobias, Svensson, Tobias January 2018 (has links)
Today, there is a great need for IT businesses to work with continuous improvement to keep competitive on the market. An important part of the work of continuous improvement is to assess and evaluate the existing situation with a view for creating profitable actions. To enable this assessment, businesses can use standards and models for process assessment. In the IT sector, many companies try to improve their work processes and combine development and operations. The work of this interconnection is often referred to as DevOps. The problem we address is that there are no simple digital tools that are contextualized for activities that want to improve collaboration between these departments. The existing class of DevOps assessment systems contains inadequate models, thus not support development and operational players in their work to assess their business to provide a basis for improvements. In order to improve the opportunities for DevOps operations while creating new knowledge, we have designed and evaluated a digital assessment model that can be used in practice. To fulfill the purpose, we have used the research method Action Design Research, which is a particularly suitable method of creating IT-related models in a real context. The result confirms that existing assessment models are not sufficient and that the problem is generalizable as a class of problems. An operating digital model will also be presented with the purpose of assessing activities from a DevOps context. In developing the artifact, three general design principles have also been identified which developers and practitioners should follow for design of future assessment models for DevOps. The principles imply that, in the creation of a DevOps assessment model in an IT context, (i) a grading scale should be divided into four capacity levels, (ii) statements used in the model should be changeable and adaptable as organizations are unique and (iii) should be developed so that development and operation can perform the evaluation together.

This thesis handles the area around time reporting within the consulting field and how it can be facilitated. Time reporting is a must for every employee in the consulting business. In today’s society, a problem exists as the employees sees this to be a demanding extra chore. To manage employees to execute this is a challenge for every business. If this is not done correctly, the business can face huge economic consequences. The purpose with this thesis is to facilitate time reporting for consultants. This will be done by developing a Mobile IT-Artifact. The application which will be developed will serve as a support for time reporting and its goal is to minimize the human-computer interaction. The artefact that will be developed uses the phones build in GPS function to achieve this. Action Design Research (ADR) is the research method used to complete the development of the artifact and the thesis. This thesis is built around a case in cooperation with the consulting company Knowit.
