An Investigation of the Role of Technology in Instructional Designers' Decision-Making

The instructional design theory-practice gap is a recognized problem within the research literature. Emphasis on studies that aim to identify how instructional design theories and models are applied in everyday practice has shed light on the need for further investigation into instructional designers' decision-making processes. In particular, given the pervasiveness of computing technology in education, it is important to understand what role technology plays in the design of instruction in higher education settings. The goal of this research was to explore the theory-practice gap in instructional design decision-making within the context of designing technology-enhanced instruction in higher education and determine what can be learned from other design disciplines that will inform the development and refinement of instructional design theories and models. In this qualitative research study, the researcher collected and analyzed data from a web-based questionnaire and follow-up phenomenological interviews. Data analysis employed the use of both content analysis of the questionnaire responses and interpretative phenomenological analysis of the interview transcripts. Findings indicate that instructional designers' decision-making processes are influenced by several factors during the design process. Designers view the roles differently, depending on their position within the design process. Furthermore, concepts of design decision-making which have been contributed to architectural design can be applied to how instructional designers practice. Finally, while technology is an integral part of online course design, its perceived role is dependent on the position of the designer within the designer process. The results build on previous research in the area of instructional design, and add to the body of knowledge about how designers think when making design decisions, as well as, and the role which technology plays in these decisions. Themes uncovered in this study identified specific areas for further study which will help researchers and practitioners connect existing instructional design theories and models to current practices.

Audio clips from a creative director and teacherinterviews’ along with still picture quotes added valuable process method narration.Practical hands on experience in addition to the gymnasium class usability findings,led to final stage development in the form of a digital mobile application, "id'8." Anend sequence animation illustrates simplified, refined and combined 2 5stepprocesses in action, as I work the id’8 process tool interactively.

As inovações e transformações sociais dominam a sociedade contemporânea o que acarreta mudanças significativas na vida das pessoas. Consumidores estão cada vez mais exigentes e cientes de seus interesses de compra. Num ambiente globalizado e competitivo as empresas que formulam suas estratégias de inovação baseadas somente em dados e informações lógicas e que não levam em conta o fator humano e social poderão estar fadadas ao fracasso. Novas formas de organização, transformações e mudanças e novos conceitos estão surgindo e sendo adaptados constantemente. Partindo-se do pressuposto que a inovação somente se constitui quando disseminada e aceita, o design thinking pode ser visto então como o motor dessa ação, sendo que, nesse contexto, este estudo analisou como o design thinking, enquanto metodologia criativa e forma de pensar estrategicamente nas organizações, auxiliou empresas de varejo de confecção feminina a construírem suas estratégias de inovação, diferenciação e vantagem competitiva. Dentro dos métodos de investigação a pesquisa utilizou o paradigma interpretativista, e foi caracterizada como exploratória e descritiva. Com método de abordagem quali-quantitativa, para atingir os objetivos da etapa prática, composta pelo estudo de caso, foram utilizadas entrevistas, questionários, observações diretas e triangulações de dados. Investigando o comportamento de compra das consumidoras identificou-se resultados semelhantes em lojas com mix de produtos semelhantes que dirigem-se ao mesmo público e no mesmo local de atuação, o que possibilitou a formulação de ações de prototipação similares, portanto verificou-se que o método do design thinking é plenamente adaptado ao varejo e a contribuição da pesquisa constituiu-se para o desenvolvimento desses pequenos empreendimentos onde a abordagem do varejo moderno é que dá suporte a ouvir os consumidores, suas necessidades, além de promover um espaço de compra de maior comodidade e facilidade para encontrar produtos e informações sobre os mesmos. Atrelado a isso, recursos tecnológicos, criatividade e ousadia – de acordo com o público alvo de cada produto – e a aparência de uma empresa, seja por sua comunicação visual por meio de sua fachada, ambiente interno, gestão da marca ou PDV podem resultar em consumidores satisfeitos com suas escolhas e em lojas de varejo que se destacam em seu meio de atuação. / 172 f.

Such power demands design to move beyond its traditional disciplines, assuming responsibility for larger issues, at the system level, that comes from the very massive use of its products. To meet these challenges, design stretches towards other areas of knowledge, exploring its integrative discipline potential to promote creativity and innovation among interdisciplinary groups. This dissertation results of a research over the possible shapes of integration between design and non designers, based on authors Clay Spinuzzi and Elizabeth Sanders, that present us participatory design, John Chris Jones, Tim Brown and Richard Buchanan, from design thinking, and a case study that investigates how such collaboration takes place when supported by networked IT. The research revealed that collaboration can happen in two ways. One brings the non designer to participate in design projects which they are to be beneficiaries. The other delivers design ways of thinking and working to be applied in other areas as a tool for creativity and innovation. Both can benefit from using digital media to amplify collaboration, provided there is a process aware management directing contributions. One way or another, design grows as integrative discipline and tool for innovation. The activity of rhetoric in the process of a designer's thinking

Research is concerned with communication of design thinking, from the perspective of a designer, and in relation to the process, product, and user experience of design. It is a study of the act of persuasion within the processof a designer’s thinking, and is concerned with interpretation of the relation between words and images. The role of technology, intuition, and visual thinking are identified as three key components of design thought, and the way these three constituent parts inter-relate is the subject matter of inquiry. Research is conducted from a theoretical and practical perspective, and throughout the inquiry, a balance between subjective and objective informationis retained. An essentially holistic approach to understanding the designer’s decision-making process is adopted, and as such, the research does not separate the act of thinking from the act of doing. The inquiry concentrates on exposing the tacit dialogue of a designer througha series of five discourses. Each discourse begins with a preface, a contextual statement that frames the line of inquiry. The first discourse introduces the research methodology; discourse two reviews the literature surrounding communication of design thinking, and observes the design process through documentation and communication of 97 examples; discourse three interviews five professional designers and listens to how they visually communicate the physical and emotional experience of being a designer; discourse four questions a designer’s tacit understanding of visual thinking and exposes the surrounding assumptions, and the fifth discourse closes this inquiry by communicating the activity of rhetoric, describing rhetoric as the relation and inter-relation between the implicit and explicit processes of looking, listening and questioning. The visual methodology provides a context that allows the designer’s qualitiesof judgement and experience to become subjects in themselves. Each discourse attends to the unfolding nature of a network of relationships that developed amongst the roles of intuition, visual thinking and technology. In doing so, the inquiry proposes to contribute to knowledge by: communicating the significance of visual thinking as a methodology for doctoral design research; the role of computer technology as a tool for looking, listening and questioning the activityof rhetoric; intuition as a facilitator of rhetoric and rhetoric as an interrogator of intuition.
