Between Us and Them: Deconstructing Ideologies behind the Portrayal of Saudi Women in Canadian Media

Dahlan, Kinda 10 August 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate binary discourses of self and other constructed by Canadian media in the representation of Saudi women. One of the modest aims of this research is to expound on the status of centralized media coverage in Canada. Drawing on Hegel’s model of dialectics, as framed by Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) and David Nikkel’s conception of a moderate postmodernism, this research also aims at contributing to the ongoing modern-postmodern discussion by delineating and examining the ways in which dialectical analysis can aid in the deconstruction of metanarratives in Western culture. Utilizing a qualitative research design that employs multidimensional modes of textual analysis, the thesis examined the changes in the portrayal of Saudi Women through a non-probability sampling of 88 Canadian newspaper articles selected from the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, and National post between 2001-2009. One major finding was that the metanarratives guiding these representations did not change significantly despite changes in narratives as brought about by several major political events. The implications of this thesis revealed what the ideological influences framing these depictions, as well as whether or not the changes that they have undergone, were self-reifying in nature. The research also highlighted the implications resulting from assessing the ontological identities of Saudi women vis-à-vis a Western framework of values.

A práxis no jornal Boca de Rua : de "gente invisível" a questionamentos do mundo

Camara, Guilherme Dornelas January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the praxis of the members of Jornal Boca de Rua, a Project of the NGO ALICE. With this initiative, established since August, 2000, the NGO supports homeless people from Porto Alegre in the production and selling of an alternative vehicle of communication which concerns their daily life at the streets. In this study, Boca de Rua is approached since the project of depositioning Organization Studies which highlights the processual nature of organizations and local construction of identities, working towards the dislocation, displacement or depositioning of traditional conceptions of organization. What is evident in these discourses is a tendency to consider social organization as fluid, plural, mobile, transparent and locally constructed. The research was arranged in two phases. In the first one, the author assumes a phenomenological approach in such a way that required references were organized in three main theoretical axles: the Critical Theory of society, Alberto Guerreiro Ramos’s proposal for a multicentric society, stressing important elements for his theory of social systems delimitation, and the Ethics of Otherness of Emmanuel Lévinas. In the second phase of this research, based on empirical data, the author presents his theoretical-empirical analysis of the organization processes of Boca de Rua. This moment constitutes a critical reflection upon these processes, based on theoretical and empirical elements which were organized according to Dialectics Phenomenology principles.

Corporate governance in the nonprofit sector : a grounded theory approach to studying the trustee board

Dexter, George January 2018 (has links)
This thesis uses a constructivist grounded theory approach to investigate nonprofit corporate governance in the UK; using data obtained from participatory observations of board and associated meetings, workshops, and unstructured elite interviews. Open codes are generated and brought together as concepts, which are then iteratively compared and grouped in open categories. These categories are then reassembled using the paradigm model into five axial codes: the clash of orthodoxies; clash of motivations; regulator versus board power; clash of rationalities; and effective board duality. A dialectical approach is then used to create the core category of the ‘clash of neoliberal and public service world views which exists at every level of the nonprofit sector’. This core category is analysed in terms of the subordinate contradictions: at an environmental level - regulatory power versus sector power; at board level - accountability; the SMT; board practices and rituals (professionalism, actual and symbolic authority, boards meetings as theatre, and ethical standards); the concept of challenge as an expression of power relations; and rationality and decision making; and at the individual level - motivations of directors, moral duty and social purpose, social group membership, identification, credibility and trust. The substantive theory is then situated within psychology, governance, and corporate governance theories. The contribution made by the thesis are identified as the: use of ethnography to describe the inner workings of the board; creation of a model of nonprofit corporate governance; identification of the importance of political, ideological, regulatory, and ethical contexts; and concept of power, and the senior management team as a component of the board. Further research is suggested into: (i) a comparison of corporate governance in the for-profit and nonprofit sectors; (ii) challenge within the nonprofit culture; and (iii) the SMT as a major player in governance.

Dialética negativa, teoria estética e educação: experiência formativa e racionalidade estética em Theodor W. Adorno

This theme is justified by the need to promote in society an education that, in fact, leads to emancipation, and not the reification of technical knowledge. If, in Dialectic of Enlightenment, Adorno and Horkheimer denounce the technical rationality and demonstrate how such a paradigm leads to barbarism, which rationality can lead to emancipation? Seeking answers to such problem, three studies were carried out. The first deals with the erudition and technical rationality in the context of cultural industry. The second investigates the Negative Dialectics and the effort to overcome the reductionism of identity through concepts constructed in a dissonant and constellatory way. Finally, the third turns to the Aesthetics Theory and investigates the negative and liberating potential of art that consolidates an aesthetic rationality. The three studies originate from a bibliographic research that resulted in a text that sought to approach the essay form, coherently with Adorno s negative epistemological proposal. The three parts articulate categories towards proposing an emancipatory rationality through art, which we will call aesthetic rationality; alternative way to overcome the latent barbarism in technical rationality.

A dramaturgia negativa: dialética trágica e formação do teatro brasileiro / -

Ivan Delmanto Franklin de Matos 27 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis on the history of dramaturgy in Brazil explores the idea of formation, inspired by Antonio Candido\'s work Formação da Literatura Brasileira (Brazilian\'s Literature Formation), which is known in the national literary field for defining the ambivalence that exists in our cultural constitution process, and is characterized by the influence of imported artistic forms imbalanced with local historical realities. We seek to trace the development of a national dramaturgy, identifying the boundaries and advances in the acclimation process of European forms and genres, by selecting key analytical pieces, namely works and authors considered to be \"turning points\". We hypothesize that these decisive moments are the ones influenced by the European concepts of bourgeois drama, modern drama and epictheater formulated by the critic Peter Szondi; by incorporating such concepts, Brazilian playwrights have generated hybrid forms, \"ruined\" and misfits of the original models. This thesis considers how such importation - coupled with a highly contradictory and uneven historical background - has generated amongst us several fractured theatrical manifestations that could be categorized under a broader concept of tragedy. We will seek to identify, from these decisive moments, indications of a certain tragic dialectic and how it, not withstanding its own diversity, could characterize this formation process capable of generating new works as lacerated as the social fabric to which they correspond.

A suspensão qualitativa da quantidade : a crítica de Hegel ao paradigma matemático da ciência moderna / The qualitative overcoming of quantity : Hegel's critique of the mathematical paradigm of modern science

XIX e XX / Abstract: It was the goal of the present work to elucidate the historic-philosophical presuppositions of Hegel¿s critique of infinitesimal calculus and to follow very closely the way in which this critique was effectively carried forth in the intermediary chapter of the Doctrine of Being of the Science of Logic. The first of these two tasks was approached by an interpretative analysis of three chapters of the Phenomenology of Spirit (Force and Understanding, Self-consciousness and the first of the subdivisions of Reason: Observation of Nature), just as by a confrontation with some aspects of Kant¿s philosophy (the doctrine of the negative magnitudes) and the further developments of this conceptual starting point in the philosophies of Fichte and Schelling. By doing so it was attempted to show how the transcendental philosophy, due to a fundamental binding to the manner with which Leibniz had invented infinitesimal calculus, lacked a non-quantitative concept of quality; furthermore, it was aimed at showing how the theme of infinitesimal calculus critique can be observed, already in the Phenomenology of Spirit, as noticeably preparing (in Force and Understanding) and essentially resolving (in Observation of Nature) the dialectical concept of self-consciousness. The second task was, on its turn, carried forth by a detailed reading of the chapters Quality and Quantity of the Science of Logic, through which it became possible to show how the themes brought to light in an introductory manner in the Phenomenology of Spirit were then resolved in the two versions of the first volume of the most important work of Hegel¿s speculative dialectics. A radical confrontation with the philosophy of Leibniz was, therefore, one of the main red-lines of the present enterprise. In this regard, it became equally necessary to elaborate, departing from Hegel, a reconstruction of the outlines of the historical development of mathematical infinitesimal praxis from Pythagoras to Cauchy, just as propounding ¿ now beyond the scope of Hegel¿s diagnosis, but essentially based upon it ¿ some observations regarding the development of mathematical analysis in the 19th and 20th centuries / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutor em Filosofia
