"Tu dampém fala assim?" : macroanálises pluridimensionais da variação de sonorização e dessonorização das oclusivas do português de falantes bilíngues hunsriqueano-português

Borella, Sabrina Gewehr January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is mainly aimed to describe the variation of voicing and devoicing plosives (/p, b/, /t, d/ and /k, g/) in Portuguese speech data from speakers of Hunsrückisch, as a German immigration language, from a macroanalytic and pluridimensional perspective (THUN, 1998). So that, readings, in Portuguese of the ‘Prodigal Son Parable’ from informants of 16 localities of ALMA-H Project (Contactual-Linguistic Atlas of German Minorities in La Plata Basin- Hunsrückisch), divided into two generations (joung [GI] and old [GII] and two social strata (high [Ca] and low [Cb] socio-cultural class), are analysed. The data analysis is divided into four steps. In the first step, 43 complete readings of the Parable from 15 localities of the Project are analysed, in order to check the total number of devoicing/voicing in the plosives and the linguistic constraints that favor transfers from Hunsrückisch to Portuguese (type of process, Syllable Stress, type of plosive, etc.). The second step is divided into two moments. Firstly, a comparison of readings from young and old is made (GI versus GII- apparent time), a mesochronological analysis (THUN, 2009), from the first and the second paragraphs of 59 readings of 16 Project localities. After that, a description in real time (macrochronological analysis (THUN, 2009)) of 9 old letters exchanged among Hunsrückisch speakers of different locations of Rio Grande do Sul is made. Both analyses aims to observe the existence of a change in progress in relation to the variable analyzed, in the comparation of different generations (diagenerational and diachronic dimensions). In the third step, the analyzes of 59 readings (diastratic dimension (Ca versus Cb)) are described, aiming to verify the role of education in maintaining or changing the marks of the immigration language influence in the analyzed data. In the last step, the analyzes of 59 readings (diatopic dimension- different points), are described, aiming to compare, through pluridimensional cartography, the variable behavior of the analyzed informants in a network of 16 points of research. The results of the first step show: a) a very low number of interlinguistic transfers (only 1,98%); b) a larger number of devoicing (84,14%) than voicing (15,86%) of plosives; c) the predominance of devoicing in pretonic and tonic syllables, and voicing in posttonic syllables, following to the rules of voicing in Hunsrückisch (ALTENHOFEN, 1996) and d) a great number of devoicing in word initial position, which suggests that both voiced plosives and word initial position are linguistic constraints that favor transfers. The other steps show: a) a larger number of devoicing/voicing in GII than GI informants (mesochronological analysis); b) an increasing in the number of devoicing and a decreasing in the number of voicing over time (macrochronological analysis); c) a larger number of transfers in informants from Cb than from Ca and d) A predominance of Portuguese distinctive patterns in informants from old colonies and low degree of population. Overall, there is a predominance of distinctive patterns in CbGII informants, followed by CaGII, CbGI and finally CaGI informants. With that we can conclude that the number of voicing pattern transfers from the immigration language to Portuguese is decreasing. The result shown favors a change in attitude, taking into account that the decreasing in transfers makes the benefits of bilingualism become more evident than contrarily suggest the stereotypes usually associated with the speech of Portuguese-Hunsrückisch bilinguals, which contributes to an image and stance more favorable to the use of this immigration language.

Pour une étude traductologique du plurilinguisme littéraire : la traduction française de l'insertion du dialecte dans le récit italien contemporain / Towards a tanslatological study of multilinguism : translating the insertion of dialect within contemporary Italian narrative into French

Courriol, Florence 05 December 2015 (has links)
This PhD thesis examines Italian contemporary literary works (novels and short stories) in which dialect is used as a linguistic variety in combination with the national Italian idiom. The analysis is conducted through the works of four Italian writers, in which multilingualism is particularly significant: Andrea Camilleri, Salvatore Niffoi, Laura Pariani and Andrej Longo. Taking into account the complex linguistic situation of Italy, the thesis focuses on the translation of these works characterized by the co-existence of two different linguistic systems. Through an examination of the colourful mixture of linguistic varieties and the function of dialect in these contemporary texts, the thesis aims to make a contribution to the field of Translation Studies and of History of modern and contemporary Italian Literature (examining in particular linguistic and stylistic aspects). It begs the question of the reproducibility of the linguistic mosaic created by these Italian authors in their French translations. Translation of dialect and linguistic varieties, intended as a non-standard language usage in contemporary Italian literature, represents a challenge for countries (in this case France) in which diglossia has disappeared. However, the author argues that the use of certain regional French dialects enables to recreate the defamiliarization effect of the original Italian texts.

Cross-dialectal acceptance of written standards : two Ghanaian case studies

Hasselbring, Sue 31 July 2006 (has links)
Cross-dialectal acceptance of a written standard (CAWS) is essential for that standard to be used by speakers of divergent dialects of a language. Earlier works have focused on the influence of linguistic differences on comprehension of the standard, but little attention has been given the influence of socio-cultural and programmatic factors on acceptance of a standard. Case studies of the Lelemi and Likpakpaanl language development programmes provide information through which the socio-cultural and programmatic factors which influence CAWS can be identified. Due to the complex nature of the topic, various indicators are used to measure levels of acceptance of the written standard by speakers of each dialect. Socio-cultural factors which influence CAWS relate either to the language community's degree of interdialectal communication or to their perception of being a unified people. These factors include social structure, governance, cultural and religious activities, and patterns of marriage, commerce, transportation and migration. The existence of extensive social networks and the role of opinion leaders were also influential Activities of the two language development programmes which positively influenced CAWS included those which informed and involved speakers of all dialects of the language. These activities built on the existing levels of unity and inter-dialectal communication by using existing social networks. The Lelemi programme involved speakers of all dialects more uniformly than did the Likpakpaanl programme. However, both programmes informed and involved speakers of all dialects to some extent. The dialect communities of each language did not equally accept the written standards. Acceptance appeared to correlate more strongly with programmatic factors than with sociocultural or linguistic factors. This thesis provides a model for language teams to follow in 1) identifying socio-cultural factors which have the potential to influence CAWS; 2) applying knowledge about the socio-cultural situation to programme planning; and, 3) assessing levels of acceptance by speakers of each dialect. / Linguistics / D. Inheritance and contact in Central Kenya Bantu

Starzmann, Paul 12 January 2017 (has links)
This study provides insights into the history of the Kenyan Highlands from a linguistic (dialectological) perspective. It relies on a vast amount of empirical language data that covers all varieties subsumed under the label Central Kenya Bantu (E50), among them Gikuyu, Kamba, and Meru. The thesis is divided into three parts: The first part offers a thorough quantitative analysis (dialectological survey) by means of dialectometry and multidimensional scaling. Here, it is assessed to which degree the different varieties share their phonological and lexical inventory. This allows us to establish a synchronic classification of Central Kenya Bantu showing a split into the groups Eastern, Western, and Kamba. Second, the qualitative dialectological analysis investigates the ways in which inheritance and language contact contributed to the synchronic profile of Central Kenya Bantu. Finally, the linguistic findings are correlated with historical accounts gathered through a study of local oral traditions. This enables us to specify some of the socio-historical processes that shaped the various communities in the vicinity of Mount Kenya over the past 500 years.

Un'Analisi della Variazione Lessicale Regionale Nell’Inglese di California Attraverso le Ricerche in Rete Limitate per Sito / AN ANALYSIS OF REGIONAL LEXICAL VARIATION IN CALIFORNIA ENGLISH USING SITE-RESTRICTED WEB SEARCHES

ASNAGHI, COSTANZA 12 March 2013 (has links)
The study examines regional lexical variation in written Standard California English. The valuesof 45 continuous lexical alternation variables are gathered through site-restricted web searches in 336 online newspaper websites based in 270 locations in California and then calculated as proportions. Statistical techniques analyze global and local spatial autocorrelation values. The results of the analysis, reported in 90 maps, confirm the regional distribution of the variables in California. The 45 lexical variables are then analyzed with multivariate techniques to identify the linguistic relations between the surveyed California cities. Factor analysis, which accounts for 50.5% of the variation in the data, highlights three areas in the regional lexical distribution: north/south, urban/rural, central and lower southern/upper southern and northern areas. The hierarchical cluster analysis also distinguishes six major dialect regions in California: the North dialect region, the Sacramento-Santa Cruz dialect region, the San Francisco Bay Area dialect region, the Central dialect region, the Upper Southerns dialect region, and the Lower Southern dialect region. Five multivariate maps are provided in the thesis. The explanation of the results is based both on historical settlement patterns and on a socio-cultural explanation, which are reflected in the language in California.

This work is based in claims of modern Dialectology, such as exposed in authors as Aragão, Coseriu and Ferreira and Cardoso, and of pluridimensional Geolingusitics, as mentioned by Cardoso, Mota and Radtke and Thun. This research involves 06 places in which inquiery takes place, 04 of which in the urban area, the other 02 in the rural area. In each place 04 informers were interviewed, 02 men and 02 women, belonging to 02 distinct age groups, from 18 to 30 years old and from 45 to 60 years old. The years the informers spent at school varies from none to 09 years (Fundamental School). Places and informers were chosen according to orientation from the AliB Project (Linguistic Atlas of Brazil), as well as the Lexical-Semantical Questionnaire (LSQ), through which lexical items were to be obtained, and both the places’ and the informers’description. The archiving and the transcription of the corpus were also made according to AliB orientation, and registrations were made on appropriate places to informers. The Atlas of Iguatu has 53 lingusitic charts, divided in geographic charts and lexical-semantical ones. In them figures lexical variation of items suggested by the LSQ of the AliB Project and the frequency with which they occur among informers.

About head-dependent relationship in the ancient Indo-European languages : typology and reconstruction

Corno, Stefano 05 February 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to study co-variation mechanisms between the head of a nominal constituent and its dependent(s) in the following ancient Indo-European languages: Indo-Iranian, Greek, Italic and Anatolian. By analysing in detail nominal and pronominal morphology within each of these groups, we shall determine which agreement classes are possible, and which ones are not, and define which role is played by desinential morphemes in the co-variation. In languages which distinguish three genders, inflectional classes are more numerous and either the head or the dependent bear the gender information, or neither, or both. However, when the dependent is a pronoun, the gender may be implied by the morphological type.We shall particularly focus on the agreement relations between head and dependent in core syntactic roles: A (transitive agent), P (patient) and U (unique participant in an intransitive construction). The marking of these roles is considerably different depending on whether the nouns are animate or inanimate. Animate nouns are marked in the same way in the four groups which are under scrutiny, whereas in the case of inanimate nouns Anatolian behaves in a drastically different way: the differential marking of A and U shows a limited capacity of inanimate nouns to become agents, which is also reflected in verbal indexation. The organisation shown by Anatolian is postulated as original in the field of Indo-European: the constraint of animation is decisive in becoming an agent.

Nářeční slovník jihozápadního Vsetínska / Dialect Dictionary of Southwest Part of the Vsetin Region

Goláňová, Hana January 2013 (has links)
There are only few dialect regions within Czech language territory, where a systematic dialect research can be made, since the traditional territorial dialect irreversibly disappears. In the northern part of the East-Moravian dialect region we would find Valachian region, where the dialect is still maintained alive, and where the lexicon collected in Dialect dictionary of southwest part of the Vsetin region (hereinafter as DDSV) originates. During the field survey I managed to collect a rich lexical material, on the basis of which the DDSV consisting of 2.027 basic and 427 referential lexical units was created. DDSV is a type of local, alphabetic and differential dictionary. The aim of this work is mainly to catch and elaborate the lexicon collected in DDSV, based on contemporary lexicographical methods. A differential approach was used at the selection of phraseology, it means, that achieved lexical material was thoroughly confronted with Czech explanatory dictionaries. The dialect research for DDSV was made among the members of the oldest generation (above 60 years). Among the youngest generation (under 30 years), a research for inter-generation comparison of the lexicon of substantive semantic register area of meals, drinks and smoking was led, focused at sub-groups poléfka, máčka, kaša, placka...
