This dissertation proposes to investigate the contexts and uses of the mobilities developed from the transportation and the internet access by the inhabitants of a periphery of the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, as well as to analyze the results of these two universes in view of the spatial segregation and the digital divide in that territory. The study has as methodological approach the ethnographic approach and is based, in addition to the researcher's experience through participant observation and interviews, in the reflection of the interviewees themselves and observed on the data obtained during field research. As tools of ethnographic research were used the participant observation, semi-structured interviews and the logbook. The analysis of the data collected is illuminated by the concepts of Michel Foucault on the disciplinary and control society in the universe of public transport in the wake of the spatial segregation caused by the precariousness of transport. Regarding internet access by the inhabitants of this place, we will discuss the importance of social capital in the interactional processes from the perspective of Regina Marteleto formed by the social capital construct of Pierre Bourdieu. The results of the study showed that the conditions of public transport and those of access to the internet are similar, the precariousness in the infrastructure supports the existence of modulations of spatial mobility and access to information from the internet. This scenario allows a significant loss in the social capital of the residents of this region and increases spatial segregation and digital exclusion.

Är det nödvändigt? Måste man kunna allt det här? : En studie om de faktorer som påverkar äldres digitala inkludering / Is it necessary? Do you have to know all this? : A study of the factors that influence the digital inclusion of the elderly

Mann, Filip January 2021 (has links)
Digitalization is a topic that is constantly relevant and it does not seem to be declining. In order to be able to participate in society today, high demands are placed on citizens to be able to use the internet and manage digital devices. But it is far from everyone who has the ability to live up to the demands placed on them, especially the oldest in our society. They end up in what might be called digital exclusion. The purpose of this study is to try to find out what factors people, who are older than 65, believe contribute to the digital inclusion of the elderly. Previous research has concluded that people older than 65 years suffer a higher risk of ending up in digital exclusion. Therefore, it is interesting to try to find out what factors people who are 65 years and older believe can either be the basis for or increase the digital inclusion of the elderly. In order to find out which factors people over the age of 65 believe contribute to the digital inclusion of the elderly, a qualitative research strategy has been applied. Seven interviews were conducted with people aged 65–84 and the people had varying experience of using digital devices. The results show that several respondents feel digitally excluded and that they do not feel part of the development that is taking place in society. The majority of respondents use e.g. not mobile bank ID and that it is an important part of being able to take advantage of most of the e-services offered today. It has also emerged that there is a lack of educational opportunities for older people to develop their digital skills. A consequence of this is that those who do not have experience of using digital devices are more often dependent on a close relative having the opportunity to help them cope with their digital everyday life.

Digitala praktiker : En kvalitativ studie om påverkan av digital kompetens / Digital practices : A qualitative study on the impact of digital competence

Tilly, Ida, Khegay, Julia January 2022 (has links)
Digital devices have become a natural part of individuals' everyday lives which opens up both opportunities and challenges. Today's technology enables the individual to be constantly present without being physically present in the environment. The constant availability affects the individual's social life in different ways. The present research studies how 10 middle-aged individuals communicate and search for information through digital devices. The authors take a distinct approach to digitalization. Rather than studying digital devices merely as tools that support users' daily activities, the authors argue for explorations of how digital devices can instead be seen as extension of mind, by changing the way individuals use the technology, therefore enhancing their cognitive capabilities. Furthermore, the opportunities and challenges that the respondents experience in the meeting with digital devices are examined and analyzed based on digital competence.

Att bedriva arbetsterapi när patienten är frihetsberövad : Arbetsterapeuters erfarenheter av arbetet inom rättspsykiatri / Conducting occupational therapy when the patient is deprived of liberty : Occupational therapists' experience of working in forensic psychiatry

Söderlund, Jessica January 2023 (has links)
Background: Forensic psychiatric activities are governed by safety restrictions, which means that occupational therapy work is limited in which measures and interventions can be applied. Purpose: The study describes occupational therapists' experiences of their work in forensic psychiatry and how it is affected by the patient being deprived of liberty. Method: An qualitative study of occupational therapists' experience of working in forensic psychiatry at various clinics in Sweden. Five occupational therapists working in forensic psychiatry at various clinics in Sweden were interviewed.  Result: The data was analyzed based on content analysis and resulted in the following categories: Security limits the possibilities of intervention, Destructive days (to understand their everyday life), Extended arm of the occupational therapist, Motivation and hopelessness. Da safety-controlled environment influenced the work of occupational therapists in how assessments and interventions are carried out. Challenging to train patients' activity skills for a life in society while being detained. Patients often have complex problems from a destructive environment and a large part of the work is about motivating the patient from feeling hopeless.  Furthermore, the results show that great emphasis is placed on motivating the patient in an environment that is corrected and that does not give room to be independent. Conclusion: The safety-controlled environment that forensic psychiatry entails and the complex problems faced by patients who are in forensic psychiatry can be perceived as challenging for occupational therapists. Especially when it comes to enabling the patient to learn to live a new life than the patient had before the time in forensic psychiatry. The challenge is that the patient cannot be given the opportunity for digital aids and to train their abilities in the society to which the patient should be channeled after the hospital stay. The occupational therapists value the cooperation with the nurses in the ward because they work closely with the patient in their everyday activities. The challenge of training the patient to independence in a safety-controlled environment that entails taking responsibility and tasks away from the patient is something that should be further researched.

Addressing Digital Barriers : A Case Study: Exploring how adults with mental health disorders perceive digitalization and the digital divide

Ersgården, Emelie, Sinha, John January 2023 (has links)
Digitalization has posed challenges for individuals with mental health disorders, creating a digital divide that hinders their integration into the digital society. This case study delved into the experiences of members at the Fountain House in Lund, a group of people diagnosed with mental health disorders. The study aimed to uncover the digital barriers they faced, thus contributing to the discussion on digital inclusion and the divide. Through extensive research, the study examined the digital divide comprehensively, emphasizing the role of social sustainability in achieving digital inclusion. Barriers such as missing skills, technical, external, and individual were meticulously analyzed. Based on these findings, a prototype was developed to bridge the digital divide and foster digital inclusion. The study's efforts in addressing digital barriers at the intersection of digitalization and mental health disorders offer insights into the digital divide and practical strategies for achieving social sustainability in the digital age.

Accessibility in Social Media : Facebook and the Older Adult

Jeansson Hall, Angie, Al-Hadeethi, Arshed, Gustafsson, Jenny January 2024 (has links)
In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in the percentage of seniors using social media, yet few studies have been conducted to understand the challenges underlying social network utilisation by seniors. By understanding what motivates seniors to use social media, the difficulties they encounter while using them and what would be an inclusive social media from their perspective is paramount for designing inclusive user interfaces that suit this growing population. This study explores the accessibility challenges faced by older adults, specifically those aged over sixty, when using social media platforms by focussing on Facebook as a case study. Through a heuristic evaluation and a user study this research assesses Facebook’s compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and specific usability issues faced by people over sixty. The focus is on understanding the barriers that hinder effective engagement of older adults on social media platforms. Our findings highlight significant areas where Facebook fails to meet accessibility standards, potentially leading to digital exclusion of the elderly. The study also discusses the broader implications of these findings, emphasising the need for more inclusive design practices in social media platforms to accommodate the diverse needs of older adults. This research seeks to contribute to the field of inclusive design and accessibility by providing insights into how social media platforms can become more accommodating and accessible to older users.

This is not working : an ethnographic exploration of the symbolically violent nature of everyday unemployment and job searching practices

Wolferink-Schaap, Gaby S. January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores the everyday experiences with unemployment and job searching practices in a so-called work club in Northern England. A work club is a place, often a community initiative, where jobseekers who are finding it difficult to look for work independently can go to for support and assistance. These initiatives are encouraged to be set up by volunteers by the UK Department for Work and Pensions and its Jobcentre Plus and are aimed at reducing unemployment levels by helping people apply for jobs. Specifically, the thesis focuses on contemporary job searching practices and asks what Banterby SC work club, the fictional name of the field work location, can tell us about how neoliberal ideologies influence both these job searching practices as well as the way we think about the relationship between employment and citizenship. Work clubs have only received scant academic attention, and this study shows how more in-depth explorations can provide us with some valuable insights. Specifically, because doing so helps us to look beyond policy formulations, framings and imperatives to the implications of neoliberal ideologies in peoples everyday lives. The study uses an iterative inductive ethnographic approach, focusing on one single site field work location, encompassing two hundred hours of field work, during which at least 96 jobseekers have visited the premises of the work club. The study s approach to doing ethnographic fieldwork was based on viewing participant observation as hanging out ; that is, more than merely being somewhere, but rather as engaging and being active in an informal fashion, something that the flexible and unstructured nature of the field work location suited very well. Through this ethnographic, in-depth exploration, then, I do not only explore the observations and findings as offered by some of the previous scholars exploring work clubs, but also seek to connect the findings to Bourdieu s theories of symbolic power/violence as a theoretical framework, which allows us to explore the wider implications of neoliberal governmentalities imposed on jobseekers that influence their everyday practices. This study extends not only our knowledge of the lived experiences of unemployment, but also provides a contemporary insight into work clubs, and how Banterby SC work club has proven to be a valuable site of knowledge about everyday experiences with neoliberal governmentalities toward unemployment and job searching practices. It also extends the application of a symbolic power/violence lens by bringing it together with Foucault s neoliberal governmentalities. Specifically, the study argues that neoliberal governmentalities influencing job searching and unemployment practices are a form of symbolic violence. This approach helps us to problematise job searching practices at work clubs in order to argue for increased critical attention on these sites. Furthermore, the study uncovers the extent to which a welfare system gearing towards a digital by default administration disadvantages many jobseekers who are finding it difficult to work with computers and navigate the internet. The study also addresses and explores to what extent compliance with symbolic power/violence is also shared by staff and volunteers of third sector organisations whose main goal it is to alleviate the burden of unemployment by assisting jobseekers to fulfil their job searching obligations as asked of them by the Department for Work and Pensions and the Jobcentre Plus. Finally, the study calls for more beneficiary-centred voluntary sector research, and proposes a new methodological model for exploring voluntary action and organizations, arguing for a more integrated analysis of the experiences of various actors.

I turn off the TV if it comes about corona and do something more fun on the iPad instead" : A qualitative study on digital exclusion among the elderly during the corona pandemic 2020

Olsson, Wilma, Tjäder, Victoria January 2021 (has links)
The following research is a qualitative study of digital exclusion among the elderly. The study aims to investigate if isolation due to the coronavirus has affected the digital exclusion among the elderly in any way. Previous research shows that the elderly in Sweden are the ones who use the internet the least and that they often need help from family or friends to be able to perform new tasks on the internet. Those over 70 years old are more at risk of getting dangerously ill from the coronavirus and in Sweden they were told to isolate themselves. Therefore, this study intends to investigate if elderly people in Sweden consider that the isolation has affected their perception of digital exclusion. The empirical findings were collected through focus group interviews as a qualitative method, and the study aims to develop focus group as a method by testing the framework in a time when not all aspects could be taken into consideration. The focus group consisted of five people who were all over 70 years of age and since the focus group interview was conducted during the spread of the coronavirus, it took place outdoors and with two meters distance between every participant.  The results of the study show that the focus group participants do not perceive that they are digitally excluded, and they do not believe that the corona pandemic has affected their internet habits. The participants use traditional media such as radio and television more than the internet when it comes to information retrieval. In the analysis-chapter of the study, the empirical findings are compared to previous research and the two theories Uses and gratification theory (UGT) and Digital Divide. Furthermore, the results of the study show that digital exclusion correlates with social exclusion. One conclusion of the study is that none of the participants perceives that they are digitally excluded since they all have close relationships with family and friends. Further conclusions are that information about the corona pandemic has been available in all types of media, and for that reason the elderly have continued to use traditional media as their primary source instead of turning to the internet.
