Where are we now? Reconsidering interactive text features and their role in the classification of digital books as considerate or inconsiderate

Ly, Chu N. 29 September 2019 (has links)
This dissertation presents an updated content features analysis on high-quality digital book versions of printed books. In a time where mobile devices (i.e., iPad, iPhone, Android phones) are ubiquitous, current research on the quality of digital books read on these devices have been sparse. With children having access to these mobile devices to play games, read digital books, listen to music, and watch shows, an updated study on the quality of digital books read on these devices is needed. Using the considerate/inconsiderate framework, the terms integral (vital or corresponding actions), incidental (additional or plausible actions), and incongruent (disparate and illogical actions) were used to describe whether the interactive media features in the 20 high-quality digital books were supportive in meaning-making. Those designations led to an evaluation of whether each digital books –as a whole—was supportive or nonsupportive of comprehension. Analysis showed that all of the high-quality printed version of digital books produced by Oceanhouse Media and two from Loud Crow Interactive were considerate (i.e., supported meaning-making for young children). Findings from this study confirm the utility of the considerate/inconsiderate framework as an analytic tool for evaluating the potential of using high-quality digital book versions of printed books for instructional practices. Furthermore, the dissertation shows how the findings from this study could inform the development of an evaluative tool for educators and researchers to identify high-quality digital books for classroom use and support the categorization of types of available digital books, respectively. Finally, findings point to the need for further research on whether the considerate/inconsiderate framework holds merit for evaluating digital books from a range of quality levels not just high-quality digital book versions of printed books.

Diretrizes de projeto para o desenvolvimento de livros digitais interativos / Design guidelines for the development of interactive digital books

Cechin, Valesca Amaro January 2014 (has links)
The increasing number of mobile devices on the market, arises the possibility for users to carry several books in a digital format. These books, originally developed for other formats, have addictions, and in some cases failures, that hinder and confuse the user. In this scenario arise the interactive digital books, which are nothing more than books designed specifically for these mobile devices. But along with these products new doubts show up. In this context, the present study examines whether the knowledge related to the user experience, the interaction design, the information design, and interface design, tied the theoretical bases used for the development of printed books, newspapers / magazines and digital applications can guide the process of design and development of interactive digital books. The result of this analysis allows to conduct this work, and thus create guidelines that will serve as basis for the future development of interactive digital books.

This situation becomes heavier in countries such as Brazil, in which the editorial field is less representative and advanced in comparison to other countries considered more developed. In a similar way to subjects that concern topics around ciberculture, the approaches over digital books especially the ones that are face up to the printed books are divided between apocalyptic and integrated (taking into consideration the famous invention of Umberto Eco); this can be translated into the ones that promote the end of the printed books (the codex, as we all know it) and the ones that hold its survival. Both groups have the same initial idea: the thing we call e-book is the natural successor of the printed books. These discussions do not take into account the aspects related to the contemporary society: the fact that we live in a time ruled by transience, by innovation and by diversity; to which capitalism has advanced to a stage in which social and economic relations are intervened by images (or, in the famous Guy Debord s formulation, the society of the spectacle ) in which the concept of reading has enlarged in a significant way, orientated by that we can call post-cinema , when a countless number of small screens have become an irrevocable part of our lives, feeding a culture of audiovisual fulfillment highly hypermidiatic (and, thus, centered in the use of multiple languages and signs) the fact that the book, especially the schoolbook, became more than a product, it became a network service, offered by entrepreneurs groups capable of offering an spectacular experience. In this thesis, the development of e-books is investigated under the vision of languages and education, in order to build an analysis based on the specificity of use and fulfillment of the hypermidiatic language (that demands the control of the verbal, sonorous and visual codes).

There are several materials available in LIBRAS, but my focus is only on digital books. For this, we selected six stories in digital format, signalized in LIBRAS (among them translations, adaptations and productions) and presented for six deaf teachers from different regions of Rio Grande do Sul State. These selected teachers have training in education, they were students of LIBRAS Language, and act as LIBRAS teachers in different educational levels. These Educators watched the videos and they signaled their impressions based on questions that explored the technical part of the video, signaling brands present in deaf history and its importance when used for deaf children Education. To conduct this research, I relied on Cultural Studies and Deaf Studies, realizing the Deaf Literature as part of Deaf Culture and indispensable for the acquisition of a deaf identity. From the interviews, various opinions which point to a new moment in the lives of deaf and also some major changes when they think of producing new stories in LIBRAS, contributing to improve the Deaf Literature available in our country / Esta pesquisa pretende analisar o que professores surdos sinalizam sobre livros digitais em Língua Brasileira de Sinais LIBRAS.

Embracing the Digital Shift : An Empirical Analysis of Attitudes towards E-books among Pupils in Swedish Upper Secondary School

Stålnacke, Sebastian January 2023 (has links)
As digital reading has become ubiquitous in society it is reasonable to expect it in schools. Digital reading has not been without its controversies though. Using a sociocultural perspective this thesis examines attitudes, perceptions, and access to digital books among Swedish upper secondary school pupils, focusing on e-books. Through a survey study involving 308 participants, the research addresses two key questions: what are the attitudes of upper secondary school pupils towards e-books in general and within the school context? And, to what extent do Swedish upper secondary schools provide access to e-books? Adopting a sociocultural perspective, the study emphasises the influence of cultural experiences on individuals.  Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative and qualitative data, gathering official statistics and employing cluster sampling. The survey results revealed diverse attitudes and practices towards digital reading among pupils, with a minority preferring e-books. Frequent readers exhibited lower interest in alternatives to printed books, and choice of reading device influences e-book reception. Despite a strong preference for traditional printed books rooted in cultural values, a majority supports e-book use in schools, acknowledging their practical benefits in education. However, access to e-books in schools remains limited, indicating a need for schools to address the challenges of digital reading. The thesis emphasises varying pupil attitudes towards e-books, influenced by sociocultural factors, and underscores the need for a nuanced approach to integrating digital reading in educational settings.
