The research aims to trace a cartography of processes that are related to the creation of spaces, when a human being or collectives meet, interact or concept a hypermedia, as a digital communication interface. Some experimental productions were selected for that purpose, such as: Reactable (http://reactable.iua.upf.edu/), a multi‐touch interface which establishes complex relations with the Virtual through an interaction that creates images and sounds; Poetrica (http://www.poetrica.net/), which deals with communication processes generated by the connection between humans, communication networks and wireless devices; and the smart mobs, an emerging phenomena that points to a diversity of use tendencies of interactive media. These experiments, among others, compose a map that indicates relations with territories and subjectivities; their processes of virtualization and differentiation, as well as their ability to stimulate new relations with space‐time dimensions, the power relations that are involved, and so on. The cartography (Deleuze and Guattari) draws an open map, capable of linking the signs of a territory to the forces that contribute to its configuration. Such a mapping contributes to the field of communication as long as the spaces, social relations and individualization processes are increasingly constrained (not determined) to the new communication practices in the contemporaneity. The creation implies an ethical and aesthetic paradigm, because it deals with questions that involve social, technological, scientific, cultural, political, economic and even epistemological dimensions, composing diagrams in permanent transformation

The search of historical information of sports events and the teams trajectory at digital media is hindered by the way of the sports organization usage and how the digital media and the news portals provides the search options of past events. Therefore an analysis on how this digital media usage happens and the existing gaps at the current digital media functionalities through a case study is made in order to propose the development of a content aggregation platform that allows a homogeneous presence of these sports organizations at the digital media, generating relevant information to the fans and to these sports organizations and their commercial partners.

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The semantic basin, which supports the theoretical and methodological references in this research, is based on the following authors: Michel Maffesoli, Edgar Morin, Paulo Freire, Paula Carvalho, Pierre Lévy, and others. The present work aims to outline possible ways of investigation, observation and analysis of contemporary impasses, presented by juvenile cultures, in daily school life and, beyond that, specifically in the cultural curriculum mediated by new information technologies. The methodology used was research of the ethnographic type, considering that it is a field research which favors the objective of mapping the academic institution and juvenile practices inserted in a context of technology and media challenges. Nowadays to investigate interfaces between different types of education, juveniles cultures and the artifacts of the new means of communication and information becomes an emergent question, considering that, within a conception of curriculum expanded to spaces of knowledge development, the cultural artifacts, built beyond school walls, effectively influence types of education, interfere with school curriculums and with the knowledge the students have about themselves, the others and cultures produced daily. Thus, it was taken into consideration, as a north to this research, the holonomic paradigm, to the extent that it allows us to think of a new organizability. Having the holonomic paradigm as a start point, we were allowed to organize the sphere of action and the glimpse on the symbolic dimension, which outlines the questions that were investigated. As a result, it was observed that youngsters of a public school in the region of Matão, São Paulo Stade, Brazil, don't comply with material pressure. On the contrary, they want to influence the world they live in starting from the creation of new ways... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

An informed community's perception of the impact of digital technology on the credibility of news photography

Làzaro, Angelique Maria January 2000 (has links)
South African photojournalists’ perception of digital technology’s impact on the credibility of news photographs is investigated in this study. Digital technology has the capabilities to produce “manipulated” photographs that appear realistic and credible. Credibility is dependent on a variety of factors including codes of realism and codes of production, which fit conventional codes of photographic representation. Manipulation is the act of deviating from accepted codes of photographic representation that may jeopardise the credibility of news photography. This thesis proposes a new theoretical framework that encompasses existing theories of semiotics, ideology, naturalism, realism and credibility. These theories underpin the definitions and discussion on manipulation and credibility. A descriptive survey is used which attempts to discover photojournalists’ views towards credibility. This research draws on qualitative research methods using a largely qualitative questionnaire, which generates both qualitative and quantitative data. The questions are formulated around two case studies of digitally manipulated photographs. The trends and responses in the research data are connected and discussed. The findings of this study are discussed in terms of credibility, awareness of the digital changes, the reason for the changes, the role of a caption, deletion techniques and background changes. The empirical situation is analysed in relation to the theoretical discussions and this study’s theorisation of photographic representation.

Everyday stories: The people’s archive and the rural in ‘new’ India

Srinivasan, Ragini Tharoor January 2015 (has links)
This article is a case study of the People’s Archive of Rural India, a multimedia digital archive founded by journalist P. Sainath, which debuted online in December 2014. PARI features photographs, videos, interviews, audio files and articles that seek to illuminate the lives of the over 833 million people who live in rural India. Focusing on the narrative form of the ‘story’ and the universalizing temporality of the ‘everyday’, the article asks, ‘What is the relationship between PARI’s rural India and the “New” India to which it ostensibly belongs? How do PARI’s textual and visual mediations work together to produce the rural as a region?’. The article explores the relevance of postcolonial theory for the study of cultural production in the time of ‘New’ India, while arguing that PARI offers a Janus-faced depiction of the rural as urban India’s historically entrenched Other, on the one hand, and as a critical outside to the neo-liberal imagination, on the other.

Can you see the music? MTV base music television production centre

Jooste, Marc Charles 19 November 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is the result of in interest in the progression of media-technologies within the urban context. Large media billboards scattered along major vehicular routes, also advertisements and information displayed on the facades of buildings have become synonymous with the urban fabric. The intent of this dissertation is to determine the relationship between media-technologies and the social organizations of the city. Can one consider these technologies as generators for social interaction and the broadening of the urban cultural content? Media-technologies are becoming increasingly popular in the use of public spaces, signifying the ability and opportunity for these systems to create an interactive relationship with the user. The theme of the discourse is the creation of a Music Television production centre in Prinshof, a neglected part of the Pretoria inner city. Establishing an entertainment based development in this already vibrant area, might contribute to the systematic rejuvenation of this lower to middle-income community. The design proposal aims at becoming a social tool, encouraging the development and sustaining of the local cultural identity and realizing the potential of media/interaction technologies within the African context. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Architecture / unrestricted

Between Reality and Realism: CGI and Narrative in Hollywood Children's Films

Bernard, Kaitlin January 2011 (has links)
This paper addresses many concepts and concerns related to the previously underexplored topic of CGI and narrative in Hollywood children’s films. Through an analysis of scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Golden Compass, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and Inkheart it demonstrates that CGI spectacle does not exist in opposition to narrative progression as some scholars have suggested. Instead, by drawing on theorists like Lefebvre and Furstenau (2002), this investigation asserts that belief in fictional realism is paramount to spectatorship. It is shown that CGI can be used in a way that respects realism in the Bazin tradition and continuity editing in order to allow the spectator to believe in the fictional reality of narrative events. This belief is then connected to the emotional engagement of the spectator by drawing on ideas from Smith’s (1994) structure of sympathy. The ultimate goal of this paper is to present a conceptualization of CGI that creates a stronger distinction between reality and film realism than previous literature has suggested.

Gatekeepers No More: Redefining the Roles of Journalism and PR in the Age of Digital Media and Content Marketing

Scopelliti, Maria January 2014 (has links)
The digital media landscape has fundamentally changed the way audiences consume and share content, creating many opportunities and challenges for news companies and organizations of all types (private, public and non-profit). This research investigates how the latter have gained the ability to produce and distribute journalistic-like content through their owned channels, thus circumventing journalists and engaging with their audiences directly. It shows how digital media have altered the manner in which news about organizations is disseminated, and, subsequently, the roles of PR practitioners and journalists. Through a series of interviews with seasoned experts in these two competing and collaborating fields, this project provides insights regarding the erosion of journalists’ gatekeeping role and the advent of PR practitioners as content creators. It supports prior research regarding the value of reciprocity between journalists and PR practitioners and offers orientations as to the future of these two professions in the context of the digital media landscape.
