Gruvsjö, Maria January 2016 (has links)
This case study describes and discusses the outcome of some lessons, according to skolver-kets Allmänna råd, given for pupils with specific learning difficulties. It shows pedagogical problems and dilemmas which might occur when things do not turn out as it was planned for. The theory of the zone of proximal development is described in broad outline. The im-portance of action as the foundation to learning is illustrated. The complex role of teaching in the classroom is explained. Skolverket pursue (the theory of) a progression plan, according to the assumption that in a certain grade the pupils learn already defined knowledge based on success from previous learnings, even though it does not always square with the experiences of the pupils state of mind. A brief account of developmental disabilities and psychologically vulnerable children further more pictures how the individual conditions of the pupils can give consequences for the ability to learn.

Nilsson, Edith, Sigvardsson, Frida January 2016 (has links)
Metod Studien genomfördes i två kommuner i sydsverige. Nyckelord Skolsköterskor, barn som far illa, etiska dilemman, anmälningsskyldighet / Abstract Background The school nurse sees all children at least three times during their school years in connection to planned health visits. Together with other school professionals the nurse has the possibility to identify maltreated children and is obligated by law to report it. Suspecting and reporting child maltreatment might implicate an exposure to stress and dealing with various ethical dilemmas. It is therefore important to investigate the school nurses’ experiences concerning this issue. Aim To describe the school nurses’ experiences of ethical dilemmas when suspecting and reporting child maltreatment. Method The study was conducted in two counties in southern Sweden. Data was collected by interviewing eleven school nurses and analyzed by using a qualitative manifest content analysis. Results The ethical dilemmas experienced by the school nurses were categorized in four categories and eleven subcategories. Building and maintaining trustful relationships with the children and their parents was important for the school nurses. The wish to do right was experienced as difficult since it meant to identify maltreated children, to report it, and at the same do good and do no harm. The school nurses felt alone and vulnerable in this situation and needed support both from colleagues and other professionals. They lacked feedback from the child protection services and were yearning for a better collaboration. Conclusion The school nurses experienced ethical dilemmas when meeting maltreated children and being obligated to report it. Supervision, support during the process and a better teamwork with the child protection services may increase the reporting rate. Education and standard assessment instruments might increase the number of identified maltreated children.   Keywords School nurses, child maltreatment, ethical dilemmas, mandatory reporting

Examining Productive Failure Instruction in Dental Ethics

Tam, Karen, Tam, Karen January 2017 (has links)
These three papers examine "productive failure" as a viable learning design to improve problem solving skills using open-ended problems. Productive failure, a teaching method, is based on the premise of unsuccessful learning performance in solving for complex problems with little to no support while yielding productive learning for subsequent problems. Kapur (2008) argues that hidden efficacies of learning exist in failure in which learners potentially learn through experimentation from their exploration and struggle in solving complex problems in a way that learners must first try and solve complex, novel problems on their own, but ultimately will fail to reach a solution. We have limited understanding if this type of design would be effective on complex problems with multiple solutions since previous studies on productive failure focused on problems with a canonical solution. In the three papers, I examine the extent to which students learn how to solve moral dilemmas in productive failure (PF) compared to lecture and practice (LP) and to what extent instruction in PF helps students learn skills in transferable problem solving. One paper describes a pilot study that was conducted with 21 second-year dental hygiene students. In the randomized-controlled study, analysis did not show significant differences on moral reasoning (p = .06) and transfer of knowledge (p = .58) between PF and LP instructional method. However, the effect size on students' posttest scores was high (d = .76) which as a result of the educational intervention, suggests that PF students demonstrated acquisition of new thinking and approached the complex problem in a more sophisticated moral way of thinking. To replicate these findings, the results from the pilot study were used to make adjustments in instructional and research design for a full-scale study. The second study on 77 second-year dental hygiene students from four dental hygiene programs further shows that PF students gained a deeper conceptual understanding and were better prepared for subsequent problems. PF students, I found, demonstrated greater shifts from simplistic thinking to post conventional thinking compared to LP students. Although PF students performed similarly when compared to LP students on their posttest scores in the moral responses, LP students scored lower than their pretest problem and the difference between pretest and posttest scores in LP School had a moderate effect in a negative direction (d= -.64). Findings in both studies suggest that productive failure design has the potential to help students reach a deeper conceptual understanding when they 1) analyze their own failure; 2) use the learned concept to build upon their own prior knowledge; and 3) repair existing mental models to successfully solve complex problems. As such, continued exploration of various instructional approaches like productive failure is still needed as alternatives to lecture and practice for developing problem solving skills.

Mathematical knowledge for teaching fractions and related dilemmas: a case study of a Grade 7 teacher

Govender, Sharon 16 January 2009 (has links)
ABSTRACT This study investigates what and how mathematics (for teaching) is constituted in classroom practice. Specifically mathematical knowledge for teaching fractions in Grade 7. One teacher was studied to gain insight into the mathematical problemsolving the teacher does and the dilemmas he faces as he goes about his work. The analysis of the data show that the mathematical problem-solving that this particular teacher engaged in can be classified as demonstrating, encouraging and working with learner ideas. He appealed to mathematics (rules & empirical), experience (everyday) and the curriculum (tests and exams) to fix meaning. The mathematical problem solving and appeals he made threw up dilemmas of representing the content, competing goals and student thinking. This aided in providing a description of what mathematics for teaching is in this practice. The report concludes with a discussion of what teachers need to know or study in order to become better mathematics teachers and where do they find these courses to accommodate their need to improve as mathematics teachers.

Etická dilemata pracovníků v sociálních službách při práci se seniory / Ethical dilemmas of social services for the elderly

PEKÁRKOVÁ, Lenka January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the description of terms such as senior, old age and basic physical and psychological changes that accompany this period. The next part of the thesis describes the concept of client, social worker and the possibilities of social work legislation in the Czech Republic. In the third part the thesis describes in detail the terms such as ethics, ethical behavior, professional ethics, ethical code and ethical dilemmas. The following chapter, based on a written questionnaire, describes the view of the ethical dilemmas of six female social workers. Furthermore, in this chapter, I present 13 selected dilemma situations that are based on the direct practice of female social workers. This part of the thesis is followed by another chapter, in which the analysis of the selected dilemma situation is carried out and a preview of the various ethical theories most frequently encountered in the literature. The ethical theories chosen are deontology, utilitarianism and ethics of care. The aim of this thesis was to describe the basic concepts of ethical dilemmas with which workers in social services can meet. The concrete practical solution of individual ethical situations by social service workers will enable a realistic view of solving ethical dilemmas in practice. The analysis of a particular selected dilemma situation will provide a view of solving this situation using the most important ethical approaches. Knowledge of these approaches can help social workers to make choices and choose the right ethical approach.

Oltramari, Andréa Poleto January 2010 (has links)
This thesis stems from an exploratory research which aimed to discern the personal dilemmas related to the banking executives’ career are currently shaped and understand how these dilemmas are twisted with their family relationships. In order to do so, to theoretically support this thesis, the following concepts were taken up: dilemma, subjectivity and life style, particularly as regarded in Bauman (2009; 2008; 2007a; 2007b; 2004), Pelbart (2000), Guatarri and Rolnik (2005) and Gaulejac (2007); career, especially in the light of the models of borderless and protean career (SULLIVAN and ARTHUR, 2006; HALL, 1996); immaterial work, as approached by authors like Lazzarato and Negri (2001), Lazzarato (2008; 2004), Negri (2009; 2008; 2003), Pelbart (2000; 2003) and Grisci (2008). The interviews were conducted with sixteen banking executives from Porto Alegre and the metropolitan area, and also with fifteen representatives from their family relations. The structured interviews were conducted with the banking executives within their work environments, while the interviews with family members occurred in their homes or in stores suggested by them. Data were analyzed in a qualitative way and followed the guidelines proposed by Minayo (2001). Results suggest the existence of dilemmas related to spatial and functional mobility and social life dispossession. The existence of these dilemmas is not a novelty. However, nowadays they take over the individual’s professional and personal lives regardless of time and space limits. This, in turn, affects the executive and his family’s way of life. Such configuration is connected to a “model” of meteoric professional career, which is the responsibility of the worker alone, in a context where immaterial work prevails (LAZZARATO and NEGRI, 2001).

O currículo da disciplina Educação Física: estudos documentais e interinstitucionais / The curriculum of Physical Education: documentary and interagency studies

Simone da Silva Salgado 10 August 2015 (has links)
This Doctoral thesis was presented in articles forms, each one of them comments one of the methodological stages and the results of this research. In the beginning of each section the reader will find a specific summary of each article. The first article, entitled Physical Education: dilemmas of the discipline in the school side analyzes five master theses that take as their objects the physical education and its dilemmas in the disputed territory of the curriculum. The main dilemma is that Physical Education is represented such as space and moment, both associated to the universe of leisure in an institution that worths disciplines that are usually considered useful in the job market. Second article, entitled The Pedro II School, education reforms and physical education curriculum: from the 1980s to the first decade of the 21st century we in objective of historicize the Physical Education curriculum of the Pedro II School, based on the curricular documents elaborated by this institution. It was concluded that the vagueness of subjects and the lack of a prescriptive curriculum has withdrawn the Physical Education teaching from the unification of teaching proceedings and Teaching Units evaluation, perpetuating doing ways and not knowing ways.

Burlamaque, Arthur Verschoore January 2013 (has links)
The personal search for liberty in liquid-modern society and immaterial work context, and the consequent need to take risks and to deal with an instable and insecure environment can make one vulnerable as exposed to a countless number of tools, services, methods and techniques for personal development wich promises fast results and increased controle over life experiences. The present dissertation searches to analyse how personal dilemmas experimented in immaterial work context and in liquid-modern society are presentated and worked in the perspective of life coaching. The present study is characterized as an exploratory study and counted with the participation of five professionals who offer life coaching services. The data was collected through individual semi-structered interviews. To analyse the data the content analysis was used. The analysis of the results was developed in a qualitative way from theorical references about liquid-modern society, immaterial work, coaching and life coaching. The results of the research indicates life coaching as a sevice that utilizes management tools originaly aplicated in business devolopement, and a service that corresponds to a demand for personal development in the search for adaptation over changing situations, for excellence in all of life´s domains, and in the search for personal realization, all caracteristics of liquid life. Aligned with the idea that all should be in permanent state of awareness and self management, and deeply merged in the self-help and personal development market sponsored by productivist and capitalist ideology, life coaching is presented as a clear expression of the subjective production notion that is characteristic of a world in predominance of immaterial work. The life coaching has yet been presented as an inconsistent service in terms of it´s strucuture. In Brazil, the lack of consense pointed out over its knowledge base, the lack of regulation over the life coaching formation and the inexistence of premises for life coaching professional performance are elements that justify questioning how appropriate and adequate are life coaches´ capacitation to work out personal dilemmas in immaterial work context and in liquid-modern society.

Pharmacy Student Dispensing Behaviors in Practice-Based Dilemmas

Dowling, Karilynn, Hagemeier, Nicholas E., Mospan, Courtney 17 July 2017 (has links)
Objectives: To examine the extent to which pharmacy students’ attitudes, subjective norm beliefs, and perceived behavioral control beliefs explain gray dispensing decisions, using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a framework. Method: Third professional year pharmacy students (n=159) from two academic cohorts were provided three written case scenarios: (1) a dentist prescribing outside of his scope of practice; (2) a physician prescribing for a family member; and (3) a patient who was out of refills on insulin. A brief questionnaire assessed TPB constructs, whether or not the student would dispense the medication, and the number of times the student would dispense in 10 similar situations. Composite scores were calculated for TPB constructs after analyzing internal consistency reliability. Linear regression techniques were used to analyze the influence of the constructs on mean intent to dispense in similar scenarios. Results: The percent of students who indicated they would dispense in each scenario was 68% in scenario 1, 74% in scenario 2, and 81% in scenario 3. For all case scenarios, mean intent to dispense in similar scenarios was explained by attitude scores (p≤0.006). For the insulin refill and family prescribing cases, mean intent to dispense was also explained by subjective norm beliefs (pImplications: Student attitudes consistently predicted intention to dispense across the gray scenarios. These findings can be used to develop and target upstream TPB construct interventions in pharmacy education that influence students’ downstream dispensing decisions. Additional research is warranted to determine if TBP constructs similarly explain the dispensing behaviors of practicing pharmacists.
