Making War for Women? An Analysis of UN Resolution 1325 and the Gendering of International Intervention

Harris, Sabrina Kylie 22 June 2021 (has links)
This thesis explores how UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security and its ensuing National Action Plans for gender equality inform justifications of international intervention. I ask the following questions: how does Resolution 1325 and its ensuing National Action Plans for gender equality construct subjectivities of gender? How have states appropriated these gendered subjectivities in the legitimation of conflict? I review feminist, postcolonial, and poststructuralist literatures to argue that Resolution 1325 is aligned with broader United Nations governmental strategies for framing and justifying international intervention. Resolution 1325 produces dualistic subjectivities of gender, where women are constructed either as victims or as empowered, albeit within the limits deemed acceptable in masculinized contexts. I analyze the case of German National Action Plans for gender equality and the official policy texts related to its intervention in Afghanistan. I demonstrate that the foreign policy of a seemingly progressive state embraces Resolution 1325's dualistic subjectifications of women in conflict to construct logics that legitimize the Afghan intervention. My study findings show that Germany discursively constructs women and gender equality in accordance with the UN's guidelines and its good governance framework, which do not challenge existing structures of masculinity. In addition, they function as a means through which Germany legitimizes neoliberal and neocolonial policies as acceptable, ultimately failing to challenge the international war system. / Master of Arts / This thesis analyzes UN Security Council Resolution 1325's influence on the development of German gender equality policy and German foreign policy towards intervention in Afghanistan. I ask how the visions of gender produced in Resolution 1325, which primarily frame women as victims or only as empowered, inform the approach of Germany to Afghanistan. I find that German gender equality policy and policy towards Afghanistan are heavily influenced by the UN's framing of gender, as these ideas allow for Germany to justify its role in Afghanistan as a means to empower women further or save them from victimization. This allows Germany to maintain its role as a progressive humanitarian state by aligning its justification for the mission with the UN's broad objectives. However, doing so sets a dangerous precedent by legitimating intervention so long as it fits within the confines of the UN's notion of acceptability. Ultimately, my work shows that gender and attention to women functions to "clean" the German intervention in Afghanistan and portray it as progressive in accordance with the UN's values despite the inherent militarism of the intervention.

Sustainable Clothes Development : The Development of a Model for Production of Sustainably Produced Clothing

Sundvall, David, Åberg, Pontus January 2017 (has links)
If you are living in Sweden, you´re likely to consume around 15 kg textile every year (Palm, 2011). Of those 15 kg, 10.5 kg are most likely produced in Asia (IPCC, 2014). When producing textile, greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane are emitted. These greenhouse gases are a big cause for the global warming and are having a direct effect on people. 17% of all deaths in China 2015 could be correlated to polluted air (Rohde & Muller, 2015). If people knew the consequences of their consumption it´s in our opinion that they would consume less. More awareness leads to less consumption and ultimately less destruction. Organizations/corporations try to get people to understand but the message doesn’t seem to reach out quite strong enough. In this thesis another approach is investigated. The approach is about spreading a message through sustainable produced clothes with an appealing design, and encouraging consumption. By choosing our sustainable clothes instead of other non-sustainable options the consumer helps solving a social problem, which the (appealing) design is inspired of. The design is not only appealing but also designed to educate the consumer which leads to a more aware person who consumes less. We have worked with and Agile Iterative process which enable us to quickly see results and make changes. The project started with a goal to produce fictive clothes with our approach in mind. This goal was changed along the process and the final result ended up as a model. The model guides the user through two major parts. Part One is to enable a sustainable base for the production of the product where one step is to find a social problem. Part Two is an iterative process which uses the social problem established in Step One as a source of inspiration when designing the product itself. The model encourages the user to iterate the product design process around different aspects of the product. The model can be used by itself as well as a part of a developing process. Our recommendations for further work is to develop the model so it can be used for other types of products.

Agentivité, modalités de contrôle et subjectivité / Agentivity, modalities of control and subjectivity

Veecock, Candace 31 May 2012 (has links)
The attribution of agentivity is an important enunciative operation. Our conception of time leads us to assign causes to actions and events. Linguistic “agency” or agentivity can be distinguished from linguistic causality (or causativity) by the fact that an animate entity (generally human) can be identified as the ultimate cause of an action or event. Animate entities are formally accorded intention, control and telicity over their own actions. However there are regular cognitive shifts from prototypical agency. Agentivity is a complex concept often allowing differing degrees of agency and the transfer of agency between actual or potential agents (the doubling of agents, delegated agency, etc.). Agentivity refers to the ascription and linguistic encoding of cognitive and enonciative operations which are at the disposal of an utterer / enunciator. Constructions which show nonprototypical agentivity are thus of particular interest. French constructions such as se faire + infinitif, se laisser + infinitif, se voir + infinitif, faire + infinitif as well as English constructions with get and have are revealing. Here there is a question as to the interpretation of the participative role of the animate subject. In certain cases control can be attenuated or even cancelled. In fact, se faire and get constructions have much in common, including their recent specialization as passives which describe unpleasant circumstances. This work uses concepts from Culioli’s Theory of Enunciative Operations. The contribution of an informative principle (recent developments in linguistic theories of information such as Vallduví’s “information packaging” and Lambrecht’s “informational structure”) makes it possible to detect in constructions similar to se faire + infinitif, a pragmatico-enunciative role which can be distinguished from canonical passives. The use of these constructions reflects the subjective and intersubjective management of information and the process of enriching the knowledge of one’s interlocutor with information indicating stance and positioning.

Rochaix, Delphine 05 December 2012 (has links)
This research examines psychopathological processes associated with behaviors referring to the Body Art. This work deals with body modification practices (piercing, tattooing, scarification, stretch) and performance (several hours tattoo sessions, suspension, play piercing and artistic performance). The methodology consists on both quantitative and qualitative study. Quantitative evaluation focuses on variables of symptomatology, personality, emotional and variables associated with "body" dimension in a population of adult body artists and non-practicing. Qualitative evaluation examines discursive productions through the analysis of the grammatical structure of the speech and associated topics.

Le traitement, dans la presse écrite, de la violence politique en Guadeloupe de 1979 à 1989 / How the written press dealt with the political violence in Guadeloupe between 1979 and 1989

Canneval, Jacques 22 October 2013 (has links)
Between 1979 and 1989, the region covering the French West Indies and Guyana, and in particular Guadeloupe, experienced a decade of violence. 284 bomb attacks were committed in these countries, i.e. slightly more than 10% of the 2,616 attacks carried out throughout French territory between 1973 and 1980. Two “terrorist” organizations successively claimed responsibility for these acts of violence: the Liberation Army Group (G.L.A.) and the Caribbean Revolutionary Alliance. The aim of this “armed struggle” was to “incite” the French government to grant national independence to its last strongholds in the West Indies and South America. This dissertation, entitled “How the written press dealt with the political violence in Guadeloupe between 1979 and 1989”, focuses on questioning the discursive strategy implemented by national and regional newspapers for reporting the violence in a country where a political theory on assimilation was brought into play. In its first part, this work, which is based on the actantial model, concentrates on highlighting the major phases in the “departmentalization” formula, which imposed itself over time as the political framework that would be used to regulate public life in overseas departments. In its second part, it emphasizes in detail the long historic process which led to the aforementioned violent events. These are analyzed in the third part through a contrastive study of the reference daily – Le Monde, with the nationalistic newspaper – the Journal Guadeloupéen and by analyzing the content. The results of this work are twofold: 1) the phenomenon of political violence is addressed in its theoretical and practical functioning; following an in-depth enquiry, the basic truths are brought to the fore for this troubled period. 2) the contrastive relationship, the lexical and thematic analysis uncovers the “substance” used by the newspapers for establishing their claims.

Etos na poesia combatente de menestréis do rap: por uma análise das imagens discursivas no grito marginal do hip hop brasileiro / Ethos in the militant poetry of rap minstrels

Raphael de Morais Trajano 30 June 2010 (has links)
Desse modo, ambicionamos que se aprimorem os debates sobre práticas de afirmação social de classes e, através de novas discussões, se intensifiquem as iniciativas sociopolíticas / This research has the aim to analyze the effects of meaning created by hip hop songs produced in this cultural movement cultivated in the ghettos of Rio de Janeiro. The basis of the analysis is the verbal expression (rap) and the design of album covers. Another goal is to investigate, in the artistical material of Marcelo D2 and MV Bill, social relations produced by characters in the suburb, in opposite social spaces (center and suburb). For this purpose, enunciation based Discourse Analysis is used, with emphasis in the discursive ethos concept and in notions associated with the discursive alterity, aiming to study how explored people position themselves and the way they see their discursive image as outsiders. Our goal is also to apprehend the ethos produced by people involved with rap, considering the Other that talks about/through them (alterity). The methodological procedure explains why and how hip hop was chosen as corpus, and why ethos was the concept elected to guide the research. The analysis search for conclusions about the discursive materiality, willing to extract senses produced in the ghettos. As result, there are reflections about specific aspects of the social context in Rio de Janeiro, about the relationships between people, places and practices, in order that there may be a wider consideration about this sort of relations, even in schools. With this project we aim to enhance the debates about social classes affirmation practices and intensify sociopolitical initiatives trough the new discussions that are here proposed

A memória discursiva analisada compreende a memória mítica, a memória social inscrita em práticas e a memória narrada do historiador, enquanto história cultural.

This dissertation has as its background the theoretical perspective Discursive Analysis, which considers language as constitutive of the subject and, at the same time, embedded in history. The main goal is to get to understand how English Language representations emerge and how they are sustained by different discourses, that surround a university (Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul), from the social place public server. Thus, for the analysis of the discourse strings that we have articulated in this study, our reference is a dimensioning questionnaire answered by servers, whose objective was to take place in an English Language Course, provided by the institution. Furthermore, based on the regularities, the main discursive properties that we questioned are: English Language as a tool for personal/professional rising; the time and space linked to the subject mobility in contemporary times; and the emerging subject in relation to the fluency and domain of the language named as universal. Based on the net mobilized, we interpreted that the discourse about English Language points out a toollanguage that supports different demand, subject-position, whose illusionary 'domain' works as a bridge between time and fluid spaces. Still, as an effect of current policies strength, we understand that in this process there is a frequent attempt to decline the heterogenic, so that this universal language can be supported in the illusionary homogeny.

No. of bitstreams: 1 EsterCSA_DISSERT.pdf: 2429332 bytes, checksum: 8186e48c3a30b18ea136f8672a5a44fd (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-23 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / In this work, we analyzed reading memories of mother language teachers in continuing education context. Our objective was to understand how each individual has built his/her reader image. Our theoretical approach to the construction of selfimage was based on the concept of discursive ethos, understanding it with Charaudeau (2006) as something constructed in the intersection of glances (of the self and the other). To understand how each teacher has built his/her reader image in that intertwining of glances (of the self and the other) we are on the contributions of Bakhtin (2003, 2010b) on exotopic glance or distant/external glance. Therefore, in the analysis, we tried to capture the exotopic glance of the teachers about themselves in the various stages of their reader formation and from our exotopic look of researcher; we gave provisional finish of the reader image that teachers built of themselves. For the analysis, we adopted other theoretical assumptions: about genres, theme, composition and style, statement and social voices we based on Bakhtin (1997, 2003, 2010a, 2010b); on the notion of the discursive ethos we anchored in studies conducted by Maingueneau (2008a, 2008b); about reading, we adopted the theoretical references of Rojo (2005, 2008, 2009a, 2009b, 2009c, 2009d), Garcez (2002), Freire (2008) and Silva Neto (2007). For the discursive genre reading memories makes reference to the theme memory as well as is related to the context of teacher training, the study was supported in Arag?o (1992) and N?voa`s (2007) theory. Situated in the area of Applied Linguistics, the research aligns with qualitative-interpretative approach of socio-historical basis. Finally, from the analysis of the corpus, data that emerged from the findings, we conclude by stating that readers have created images of themselves as active readers, readers interested in both readings, the ones respected and the ones unappreciated by the official culture / Neste trabalho, analisamos as mem?rias de leitura de professores de l?ngua materna, produzidas em contexto de forma??o continuada.
