Vampyren som inspirationskälla : En didaktisk studie i teorin / The Vampire as inspiration : A didactic study in theory

Detta är en studie om det går att använda vampyrer som inspirationskälla i undervisningen på högstadiet. Syftet är att besvara följande frågeställningar: Hur kan vampyrtemat motiveras och användas i klassrummet med skräcklitteratur som Dracula (1897) och Om jag kunde drömma (2005), som är första delen i Twilight serien, som utgångspunkt? Vilka modeller inom litteraturundervisning finns att tillämpa för vampyrtemat? För att besvara frågeställningarna har närläsning använts som metod. Resultatet visar att vampyren med all rätt kan användas som inspirationskälla i undervisningssyfte. Studien visar att man måste introducera skräcklitteratur med försiktighet och användandet av olika modeller är viktigt för att nå fram till samtliga elever. I studien presenteras valda modeller för läsundervisning som är applicerbara. Eftersom ämnet bjuder på många infallsvinklar torde man kunna fånga många elevers intresse och entusiasmera till fortsatt läsning. / This is a study on whether you can use vampires as a source of inspiration when teaching at upper secondary school level. Two questions form the basis for the study: How can the vampire theme be used in the classroom with horror literature as Dracula (1897) and Twilight (2005) as a foundation? Which models for teaching literature are available for the vampire theme? In order to answer the questions of the study close reading has been used as method. The result shows that the vampire by all means can be used as a source of inspiration for an   educational purpose. The study shows that you have to be cautious when you introduce   horror literature in class and the use of different models is important due to the fact that you want to reach all students. In the study a few selected models for teaching literature are presented that are applicable. Since the subject invites to a wide range of approaches one should be able to catch most of the student’s interest and inspire with enthusiasm.

Quel est le lien entre de jeunes et indomptables vampires de la Nouvelle-Orléans, une créature frankensteinienne avec des ciseaux à la place des mains, Alice combattant la Reine Rouge dans un Wonderland effroyable et un ange déchu nommé Cain, version japonaise ? Ténèbres, rébellion et jeunesse semblent se rejoindre dans le même filon. L'objectif de cette thèse de littérature comparée n'est pas simplement de rappeler que les manifestations de la sous-culture Goth est toujours d'actualité mais aussi démontrer le caractère trans-médiatique et transculturel de ce que nous appelons la culture des ténèbres, dans quatre médias différents. Divisé en quatre grands chapitres, ce travail analyse l'importance du premier « vampire moderne », Dracula de Bram Stoker, dans l'émergence de la figure de l'outcast vampirique dans The Vampire Lestat de Anne Rice et Lost Souls de Poppy Z Brite. Le second chapitre étudie la créature frankensteinienne dans le film de Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands, lequel a su imposer sa propre conception tout en étant sensiblement lié à l'œuvre de Mary Shelley. Le troisième se consacre à l'analyse de la ré-imagination personnelle d'Alice in Wonderland par le concepteur American McGee dans les jeux vidéos American McGee's Alice et Alice Madness Returns. Enfin, nous proposons une étude de la série de manga Goth Cain écrit par Yuki Kaori dans un dernier chapitre. / What is the link between young wild vampires in New Orleans, a frankensteinian creature with scissors for hands, Alice fighting the Red Queen in a twisted Wonderland and a japanese version of a fallen angel named Cain ? Darkness, rebellion and youth seem to converge in the same stream. The purpose of this thesis is not only to recall that Goth subculture is still fashionable but also to discuss on the dark culture transmedia and transculturalism in four different medias. Divided in four chapters, this study analyses the importance of the first « modern » vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula's in the coming-up of the vampire outcast in Anne Rice's Vampire Lestat and Poppy Z Brite's Lost Souls. The second chapter focuses on the creature in Tim Burton's movie Edward Scissorhands which presents an original conception while dealing with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein at the same time. The third chapter analyses American McGee's personal vision of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland in the video games American McGee's Alice and Alice Madness Returns. The last chapter explores Yuki Kaori's Cain Goth manga series.

The gaze and subjectivity in fin de siècle Gothic fiction

This thesis is concerned with the importance of the gaze in fin-de-siecle Gothic. One of the ways in which the importance of the gaze manifests itself is in the central role of the onlooker like Enfield, Utterson or Lanyon in Robert Louis Stevenson's Stange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Prendick In H.G. Well's Island of Dr Moreau (1896), or Harker in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). As their appelation suggests, Wells's Beast Men confound the distinction between the human and the animal, which is also the case with 'Beast Men' like Hyde and Dracula. A central concern of the thisis is the perceptual drama that is involved in looking at the spectacle of the monstrous body, for excample, as the onlooker struggles to get to grips with the challenge to representation posed by these 'Beast Men'.

Sleep and Sleeplessness in the Victorian Novel, Jane Eyre to Dracula

Victorian inquisitiveness about sleep and dysfunctions of sleep is exemplified in novels published during the fifty-year period from Jane Eyre (1847) to Dracula (1897). This inquisitiveness foreshadows modern medical sleep science and immerses the reading public in a body of popular literature that subverts the concept of "normal" sleep. My dissertation explores the ways in which Victorian fiction brings physiological and psychological female concerns to the fore through the plot devices of sleep and sleeplessness. I examine the Victorians' diverse interpretations of illness, physical and sexual vulnerability, moral insanity, criminality, and anxiety to determine the thematic and narratological ways in which these issues are linked to sleeping and waking states. Drawing on feminist literary criticism, cultural historicism, and medical insight from the early nineteenth-century to the present, I argue that Charlotte Brontë, Wilkie Collins, and Bram Stoker use sleep and wakefulness as vehicles to navigate gendered fluctuations of power and loss. Jane Eyre, The Woman in White, and Dracula each present sleep as a gendered space in which power is contested. I argue that sleeplessness and restlessness are the methods women adopt, either on purpose or unintentionally, to realize self-sufficiency and protect themselves from patriarchal jurisdiction and other social restrictions on women. Women must reject their instinctual desires for a certain amount of sleep so that they can maintain agency and authority over their bodies and narratives. Implicit in the novels is the idea that deep sleep is a mechanism for achieving health and moral strength of character. However, explicitly and without apology, the novels use the trope of sleep for women as a violent instrument of loss, infection, powerlessness, and weakness. The cultural and medical artifacts of the time suggest that deep, indulgent sleep is the only way to achieve or maintain health. Yet Victorian authors write sleep as a sure road to incapacitation and subjugation. Brontë, Collins, and Stoker demonstrate that a woman's mind is only as healthy as her sleep, while her body is always safer awake.

Thesis abstract: Despite the fact that some critics view the period of the true Gothic as ending in the year 1820, others consider it to be a genre, as well as an aesthetic, which can still be perceived across various different cultural aspects to this day. Possibly the best way to approach the Gothic within the realm of literature is to observe several key examples of the Gothic topos, which was grounded in the original Gothic pieces of the eighteenth century. During the course of the nineteenth century, a historical period which from the cultural point of view appears almost inherently Gothic, British Gothic writing has undergone considerable changes and development, maintaining several of the key Gothic features, namely those of setting, isolation, and character types, modifying them in the process. Through this, it can be observed to what extent the aspects remain, and just how far-reaching their transformation was within the six exemplary works - Frankenstein, The Vampyre, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Carmilla, and Dracula. Another important aspect overlaying the selected works is that of monstrosity - a rather physical interpretation of the inner monstrosities of humans, or indeed an entire culture. "To Blaze Forever in a Blazing World": Queer Reconstruction and Cultural Memory in the Works of Alan Moore

This thesis is a queer analysis of two graphic novels by writer Alan Moore: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series (art by Kevin O’Neill, 1999-Present) and Lost Girls (art by Melinda Gebbie, 1992-3). These two works re-contextualize familiar characters such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Mina Murray, and Alice to uncover both the liberating desires and the sexist, homophobic, and imperialistic anxieties underlining historically popular fiction. Focusing on three characters utilized in Moore’s work, this thesis argues that the ideological associations with those chosen characters and the reconstructions of queerness in their narratives offer contemporary subjects resistance to limiting cultural tendencies and create an alternative space that call attention to phobic societal constructs. Both Lost Girls and the League series redefine discursively constituted identities and offer the potential to re-write normative codes of sex and sexuality.

The Animal Within : A Psychoanalytical Perspective on Shape-Shifting

As seen from cultural history, shape-shifting is a very widespread literary motif, which suggests that it has high inspirational power and general appeal. Shape-shifting has not been critically examined in the detail it merits: it is mostly examined as a part of other theories. Examination of Freud‟s psychological theories and modern literature such as Dracula, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains shows strong connections between the power of this motif and repressed animal instincts – an animal within. This connection usually manifests symbolically rather than as an actual representation of an unearthing of repressed material. There are connections to religious beliefs and a wish to be more than human which raises questions about what is implied by changing into an animal – less than human – shape. The relation between shape-shifting and repression causes an uncanny atmosphere about the motif, something which is used extensively in The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains and Dracula. There is also evidence suggesting the possibility that psychosis and neurosis might manifest as a sort of mental shape-shifting. In literature this can be seen in the were-wolf Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Berserkers of the Norse. Examination of the Boggart and Lupin of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and of the Norse berserkers show that the empowerment of shape-shifting mostly lies in control. All of this considered, and with the lack of critical examination in mind, shape-shifting seems severely underestimated and under-examined.

The Savage and the Gentleman : A Comparative Analysis of Two Vampire Characters in Bram Stoker's Dracula and Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat

These beings are stereotypically described as belonging to a “nocturnal species” who live “in shadows” and drink “our lives in secrecy” (Auerbach 1). However, they have by now appeared so often in literary works, and in so many different shapes and sizes, that they are much too nuanced to be called ‘stereotypes.’</p><p>This essay will make a historical comparison between two fictional vampires, one hundred years apart, in order to show that a change has taken place when it comes to how vampires as fictional characters have been portrayed in terms of their appearance, their psychology, and their roles in society. The first novel chosen is, for obvious reasons, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was written at the turn of the nineteenth century by a male author and is probably the first novel that comes into mind when the word vampire is mentioned. The second novel, The Vampire Lestat, was written almost a century later, in 1986, by a female author, who, to readers of vampire fiction, is a worthy successor of Stoker. Her name is Anne Rice, best known for her debut novel Interview with the Vampire (1976).</p><p>The two novels are naturally chosen because of their similarities, but perhaps even more so because of their differences. Dracula is a typically Victorian Gothic novel, which is set in the remote mountains of Transylvania, and in the modern capital London, contemporary to when the novel was published. It is written in epistolary form but never allows for the main character, Count Dracula, to defend or explain himself and his actions in a first-person narrative.</p><p>The Vampire Lestat, on the other hand, is a Neo-Gothic novel that focus less on conventional Gothic elements, for example gloomy settings, and more on the psychological aspects of what it is like to actually be a vampire. Unlike Dracula, it is the main character’s fictional autobiography in which he recalls his life in France, his transformation into a vampire, and his current career in the United States as a famous rock star. Nina Auerbach calls it “a series of temporal regressions in which Lestat . . . embarks on a backward quest out of the knowable world” (172).</p><p>Both novels used in this analysis are thus part of the Gothic genre, one being a Victorian Gothic and the other Neo-Gothic, but there are significant differences between the two. I will investigate how these differences reveal themselves when it comes to setting and plot. However, the novels are similar in that they present two male vampires who belong to the nobility and have lived on through the centuries. The vampires both want to be where the power is, which means, in the case of Stoker’s Dracula, that he tries to conquer nineteenth-century London and seduce a young intelligent woman named Mina. Lestat, on the other hand, wants to become a famous twentieth-century rock star in the United States and simply have a good time while being a vampire (Auerbach 6).</p><p>The aim of this essay is to investigate what is typical of the genres that the two novels belong to and determine what has changed in the vampires’ physical appearance, their manners and their ability to adapt to modern society. Vampire fiction will be treated as a sub-genre to the Gothic genre.
