Vyhodnocování a modelování zanášivého procesu ve výměníku tepla / Evaluating and modeling of fouling process in heat exchanger

Čirka, Martin January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis discusses fouling processes and mechanisms of industrial heat exchangers, with focus on shell side fouling of heat transfer area by flue gases, and eventually taking fouling into account, or more precisely its modeling and predicting by calculation. Thermal-hydraulic design of heat exchanger is focused mainly on shell side, as flue gases are dominant process medium in terms of fouling and heat transfer. Based on available operational data of evaluated industrial heat exchanger, specific process has been developed to determine by calculation, or more precisely predict change of fouling factor throughout operational period of heat exchanger. Usage and various options of this specific calculation technique are being discussed in conclusion, whether there is a potential to use this technique regarding more complex operational inputs or prediction of fouling process for different operational regime of heat exchanger.

Ansvarens uttryck i VD-ordet / Expression of responsibility in CEO´s letter

Lejhage, Elin, Holmberg, Nora January 2020 (has links)
Today, the world is facing major climate changes where the industrial sector stands for approximately a third of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. In order for the earth to be able to last for generations to come, hard work in sustainable development is required, especially within industries. Nowadays, large industrial companies in Sweden prepare a sustainability report based on legal requirements. The work that the companies do on sustainable development is reflected in their sustainability report. The part of the sustainability report, called the CEO’s letter, is the part that this study has focused on. The study is based on how the financial, social and ecological responsibilities are expressed in the CEO’s letter and why large industrial companies use the CEO’s letter to express these responsibilities. The three responsibilities will be based on three categories: compassion, duty and danger. A qualitative method has been used and the study has been divided into two different steps. In the first step, we examined the CEO’s letter within six companies’ sustainability reports. This was done in order to find out how the financial, social and ecological responsibilities are expressed based on the categories compassion, duty and danger in the CEO’s letter. The CEO’s letter has been reviewed from the companies in the study, between the years 2016 to 2019. This is made in order to compare the companies between the years, between sections within the industry and between all the companies in the study. The second step consisted of interviews with three of the companies to find out if legitimacy or external pressure could be the reason why large industrial companies use the CEO’s letter to express the responsibilities. Legitimacy and external pressure can be explained by two theories, the legitimacy theory and the institutional theory. This was made to get an overview of whether the companies use the CEO’s letter to express responsibilities based on society’s norms and values or if an external pressure exists that can affect the companies.

Dynamic prediction of repair costs in heavy-duty trucks

Saigiridharan, Lakshidaa January 2020 (has links)
Pricing of repair and maintenance (R&M) contracts is one among the most important processes carried out at Scania. Predictions of repair costs at Scania are carried out using experience-based prediction methods which do not involve statistical methods for the computation of average repair costs for contracts terminated in the recent past. This method is difficult to apply for a reference population of rigid Scania trucks. Hence, the purpose of this study is to perform suitable statistical modelling to predict repair costs of four variants of rigid Scania trucks. The study gathers repair data from multiple sources and performs feature selection using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) to extract the most significant features that influence repair costs corresponding to each truck variant. The study proved to show that the inclusion of operational features as a factor could further influence the pricing of contracts. The hurdle Gamma model, which is widely used to handle zero inflations in Generalized Linear Models (GLMs), is used to train the data which consists of numerous zero and non-zero values. Due to the inherent hierarchical structure within the data expressed by individual chassis, a hierarchical hurdle Gamma model is also implemented. These two statistical models are found to perform much better than the experience-based prediction method. This evaluation is done using the mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) statistics. A final model comparison is conducted using the AIC to draw conclusions based on the goodness of fit and predictive performance of the two statistical models. On assessing the models using these statistics, the hierarchical hurdle Gamma model was found to perform predictions the best

Thermomechanical stress analysis of the main insulation system of traction electrical machines

Ismail, Dahman, Andrei, Alexis January 2020 (has links)
More efficiency heavy-duty vehicles are developed with higher range, updated electronic and mechanical parts. The fuel efficiency and pollution of carbon dioxide need to be lower to achieve new EU regulations. The global population increases with an increased number of heavy-duty vehicles. This, in turn, increases the emission. By taking the electrical and mechanical parts to the next step, the global emission problems can be massively reduced. Electrical machines are the next step towards a cleaner future. The main goal of this study to investigate the electrical machine’s insulation system. Thermo-mechanical stresses due to thermal cycling affect the electrical machines and its sub-components. By using a FEM application with simplified models of the electrical machine, results are obtained and discussed. Specifically, if 2D-models are sufficient enough to represent a 3D-model. How good different 2D-models can represent the 3D-model is compared and discussed in this study. A physical experimental analysis is done to verify and calibrate the FE-models. Which one of the less frequent higher amplitude or more frequent, lower amplitude thermal cycling affects the insulation system most is determined. The simulations could be done with either, coupled-temperature displacement analysis or sequentially coupled analysis. Coupled-temperature displacement is the fastest method to use in the simulation models. A 3D-model is the best way to describe an object and is therefore implemented. Two additional 2D-models are developed for faster computation and to investigate if the models can represent the three-dimensional geometry. All the models have specific boundary conditions to make the models more simplified. Sensitivity studies have been done to determine which parameter affects the induced thermo-mechanical stresses the most. A physical experimental setup is also implemented to validate and calibrate the simulation model. The result of the 3D-model is most accurate when simulating a three-dimensional object. Simulation results have shown that epoxy, one of the main components in the insulation system, is most critical in terms of reaching breakdown first, followed by paper insulation and copper coating. This is a typical result of all three simulation models. Whereas it is concluded that some 2D-models can present the 3D-model, others can’t. The dependent factor is the different cross-section of the electrical machine. The physical experiment shows similar results between simulation in terms of strain at a lower temperature, and the deviation gets larger as the temperature increases. The 3D-model is the model that has the best representation of a real electrical machine as it accounts for all the normal and shear stress components in all directions, but also because it has better boundary conditions compared to the 2D-models. The 2D-model in XY-plane has shown similar results to the 3D-model. One of the main insulation system components, epoxy, is exposed to the highest stresses compared to its yield and ultimate strength, followed by the paper insulation and copper coating. The sensitivity study has concluded that the axial length of the stator does not affect the stress amplitudes. The most critical parameter that affects the thermo-mechanical stresses is the temperature amplitude, the materials CTE and the thickness of the jointed layer. All maximum stress amplitudes of all the components are located at the free end.

Energieeffiziente Anpassung des Arbeitszyklus in drahtlosen Sensornetzen

Neugebauer, Mario 29 January 2007 (has links)
Wireless Sensor Networks support flexible measuring of physical values. Due to the geographical distribution and multipath scattering the base station in such a network might not be reached by all sensors. Hence, other sensor nodes have to work as relay stations. At the same time, each sensor node is forced to consume as low energy as possible. In order to save energy the messages are generated event based in each sensor node and forwarded with a time triggered approach. Thereby, the duty cycle describes the portion of the relay activities in relation to the overall cycle. Currently available approaches do not properly adapt these two paradigms, event and time triggered, to each other. In this work a method to adapt the duty cycle according to the traffic is proposed. Therefore, the traffic is monitored and evaluated for traffic adaptation. Furthermore, the performance of the duty cycle adaptation is assessed using simulations. They show the behavior of the adaptation algorithm in static and dynamic scenarios with different parametrizations. The supplemental analytical models enable to easily estimate the behavior of the adaptation, in static as well as in dynamic scenarios. Also, it is shown how the duty cycle adaptation can be deployed for standard technologies like IEEE 802.15.4.

Gamache, Louis-Paul 04 1900 (has links)
Transboundary rivers, lakes and aquifers around the world are catalysts for international tension. The sharing of water resources between States is subject to increasingly acute challenges with a constantly growing demand and a variability of supply exacerbated by climate change. This issue benefits from limited legal guidance, while agreements between riparian states are exceptional and inefficient and the law in this area is controversial. This paper examines three methods of analysis in public international law of conflicts in the sharing of these shared watercourses, using the example of the construction of a major hydraulic structure on the Blue Nile, of which Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt are tributaries. A first approach is to examine the regional instruments that have attempted to allocate transboundary waters and industrial development rights. A second approach proposes to examine the application of multilateral and customary international law relating to the non-navigational uses of international watercourses. The third approach seeks to determine the scope and benefits of the duty to cooperate under public international law. After applying these three methods, the author concludes that the regional instruments of the Nile Basin and the applicable international law, notably codified in the Convention on the Law of Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses, do not offer any firm legal solution due to (i) lack of binding force or (ii) irreconcilable interpretative conflicts. As for the obligation to cooperate, although limited in scope, it is a source of optimism.

“…BY THE AUTHOR OF THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN.” AN ANALYSIS OF THE LIFE, LEGACY, AND MEMORY OF RICHARD ALLESTREE, 1619-1714.

Tanner J Moore (15339319) 29 April 2023 (has links)

This dissertation is the first comprehensive biography and study of Richard Allestree. Allestree was a soldier, spy, professor, theologian, a survivor of the plague (1665) and Great Fire (1666) of London, and supposed author of the best-selling Protestant classic, The Whole Duty of Man (1658). Throughout his life, Allestree attempted to protect those institutions through his voice, vocation, and violence. His work contributes to our understanding of the dilemmas faced by the late seventeenth-century clergy, caught between the secular rationalism of the Enlightenment and the wild enthusiasm of Protestant dissenting groups. Using his positions of power and influence, he sought to make Christianity accessible to “the meanest of reader,” moving away from perceptions of a rigid faith and seeking to make Christianity a vibrant, active belief in the lives of everyday people. This work presents a finalized canon of the works of Richard Allestree using new tools in digital humanities. Implementing statistical analysis from data gathered from his personal library at Christ Church, Oxford, clerical records, and marginalia, this dissertation settles the three hundred- and sixty-five-year dilemma of Allestree’s uncertain authorship.

Aspitman, Amez, Magid, Barek January 2022 (has links)
In conjunction with Sweden's goal of reducing emissions and dependence on fossil fuels in the transport sector, hydrogen technology has received considerable attention. Today, several studies are being carried out into hydrogen technology that focus on developing the production, application, storage and distribution of hydrogen. Energimyndigheten is investigating various strategies for hydrogen development to increase hydrogen production, develop green transports and opportunities for energy storage in Sweden. This study is about estimating the potential for hydrogen in heavy-duty vehicles in Västerås and investigating various possibilities for local hydrogen production. Gasification plants with capacities of 1, 5 and 10 MW are studied to analyze the gasification plant's design, operating conditions, costs and investment profitability. In addition, it is investigating the possibility of building a hydrogen filling station with hydrogen produced by an electrolysis plant in Rocklunda. For the electrolysis plant in Rocklunda, alkaline electrolysis from Nel Hydrogen (A150 and A300) with a power of 660 and 1320 kW and a daily production of 320 and 640 kg of hydrogen respectively are investigated. The electrolysis is connected to the electricity grid and the PV system in Rocklunda, while waste heat from the electrolysis is used to balance the district heating network. The results of this study show that the potential for hydrogen can vary depending on the number of heavy hydrogen-powered vehicles, the mileage and the depreciation period. Different scenarios are discussed to get an estimation of what the development of hydrogen demand may look like. For a long-term scenario with high hydrogen demand, hydrogen production with a gasification plant is considered suitable. The total investment costs are estimated at 2.3, 4.7 and 7.7 million euros for 1, 5 and 10 MW plants. The production cost for each plant is estimated at 3.45, 2.28 and 2.12 euros per kg of hydrogen. The results also show that efficiency and costs for operation and maintenance are factors that have the greatest impact on production costs. For the net present value, efficiency and sales price are two factors that constitute the greatest impact. For the A150 and a hydrogen filling station with a storage capacity of 400 kg per day, the total investment cost is estimated at 2.5 million euros. For the A300 and a hydrogen filling station with a capacity of 800 kg per day, the total investment cost amounts to 4.7 million euros. MATLAB is used to optimize hydrogen production that meets the estimated hydrogen demand and minimize costs in Rocklunda. The production cost per kg of hydrogen is estimated at 8 and 7 euros for the A150 and A300. For the electrolysis plant, the results show that the price of electricity has the greatest impact on the production cost, while the net present value is most affected by the electricity price and sales price for hydrogen. Furthermore, the results show that approximately 70% of the annual hydrogen production takes place with the electricity grid between 21 and 05 when the electricity price is low, which means that the hydrogen is not classified as green hydrogen. The conclusion that has been drawn in this study is that hydrogen enables the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles with long driving distances. In 2024, it is expected that there will be the possibility of selling produced green hydrogen to build hydrogen filling stations in Sweden. Hydrogen production with an electrolysis plant in Rocklunda is a suitable method that can meet the hydrogen demand in the short term. However, this means higher costs for one kg of produced hydrogen. To produce green hydrogen, green electricity from local electricity grid must be used in the electrolysis. Increased capacity on the PV system in Rocklunda is an alternative for increasing the proportion of green hydrogen. Hydrogen production with a gasification plant entails high investment costs but is suitable for large-scale production, which means that a high demand in the market is required to ensure investment profitability.

Heavy-Duty Spark-Ignited Single Cylinder Engine Fueling System / Bränslesystem för encylindrig motor

Sharad Kittur, Rohan January 2018 (has links)
Most of the fundamental research in internal combustion engines is driven by the ever-increasing stringency of emissions regulations along with the need for increased fuel economy. The proposed ban on diesel vehicles in several cities around the world combined with extensive availability, has made natural gas a promising substitute even for heavy-duty applications. The high hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of methane, the major component of natural gas, makes it attractive from an emissions reduction perspective. CO2 emissions from natural gas combustion are particularly low. However, the low cetane number and high activation energy required to ignite natural gas, requires spark-ignition.In a research setting, it is often advantageous to have a single cylinder engine. The main benefit is the ability to study phenomena without adverse interactions which multi-cylinder operation may cause. This is especially important for gas-exchange studies. Quicker replacement of parts and lower fuel consumption are secondary benefits. The focus of this thesis was the implementation of a flexible fueling system for a single cylinder spark-ignited engine. The engine is a Scania 9-liter spark-ignited engine modified for single cylinder operation. Flexibility in terms of charge homogeneity, selective intake port filling and provisions for liquid fuel direct injection have been provided. For ease of use, the engine is controlled by an aftermarket engine control unit with a graphical user interface for configuration. Safety considerations when mixing gaseous fuels and air well upstream of the intake ports have been implemented.

Transient thermal management simulations of complete heavy-duty vehicles

Svantesson, Einar January 2019 (has links)
Transient vehicle thermal management simulations have the potential to be an important tool to ensure long component lifetimes in heavy-duty vehicles, as well as save development costs by reducing development time. Time-resolved computational fluid dynamics simulations of complete vehicles are however typically very computationally expensive, and approximation methods must be employed to keep computational costs and turn-around times at a reasonable level. In this thesis, two transient methods are used to simulate two important time-dependent scenarios for complete vehicles; hot shutdowns and long dynamic drive cycles. An approach using a time scaling between fluid solver and thermal solver is evaluated for a short drive cycle and heat soak. A quasi-transient method, utilizing limited steady-state computational fluid dynamics data repeatedly, is used for a long drive cycle. The simulation results are validated and compared with measurements from a climatic wind tunnel. The results indicate that the time-scaling approach is appropriate when boundary conditions are not changing rapidly. Heat-soak simulations show reasonable agreement between three cases with different thermal scale factors. The quasi-transient simulations suggest that complete vehicle simulations for durations of more than one hour are feasible. The quasi-transient results partly agree with measurements, although more component temperature measurements are required to fully validate the method.
