How to Look Good Naked 'on the couch' : psychoanalytic approaches to British makeover television and gender

Thomadaki, Theodora January 2017 (has links)
This project formulates an original psycho-cultural approach by studying the cultural and therapeutic value of Gok Wan’s makeover series How To Look Good Naked. Through an in-depth application of Donald Woods Winnicott’s object relations psychoanalysis to the textual narratives of the makeover show, and by developing a viewing method that derives from psychoanalytic training on observation, this thesis offers an account of the affective impact of Gok Wan’s popular makeover phenomenon. This thesis addresses key themes and elements that signal the evolution of British makeover television and identifies how Gok Wan’s format and strategies chime with what has widely been hailed as a particularly ‘therapeutic’ moment in popular culture. The emblematic features of Gok Wan’s rendition of the makeover format highlights its potential positive outcomes by examining the articulation of current embodied feminine subjective experiences, in order to interrogate the complex relationship between postfeminism and therapeutic discourse. This thesis recognises that the therapeutic opportunity of Gok Wan’s method lies in the transformational process by creating emotionally constructive spaces where the articulation of experiences leads to inner self-discovery. Playful mechanisms of creativity are central to Gok Wan’s empathetic approach to working with participants to enable transformation, reflecting a number of key themes in object relations psychoanalysis and its understanding of self-experience. The opportunities afforded to participants for self-interpretation create a useful platform to reflect on Gok Wan’s role, who has been candid about the parallels between his own emotional experience and that of his participants. Psychoanalytic models of transference and countertransference indicate how this dynamic challenges dominant notions of the makeover expert as omnipotent. This project demonstrates the value of object relations psychoanalysis for critical interventions in the field of media, cultural and feminist studies in order to provide a deeper understanding of the affective impact of makeover television in shaping notions of subjective experience.

Freitas, Mariana Machado de January 2008 (has links)
This search explores the limits of art to life situations, through the rediscovery of view on certain photographic images and the erasure phenomenon, being contrary to the over-exposure that characterizes the photo from its origins. The plastic proposal explores the aesthetic dimensions of banal situations and characteristics such as forgetfulness, erasing and hiding surprising the observer eye with artistic object where it does not expect to find them, expanding the field of the laboratory and bringing the questioning of photo procedures for the daily life. The objects are small packages with inside photos with salts of silver still in process of oxidation, resulting an unstable image that suffers deletion when exposed to light. Thus, each time the photo comes from packaging, there is a progressive loss of sharpness. The packages are hidden - intentionally forgotten - in books from public access libraries, which can be found by people who don’t expect them: accidental observers. The choice of books is based on their content, that has relation with the themes explored in this search. The erasure of the image and its method of presentation questioning the place of the photographic image and proposes an extension of the laboratory experience to other contexts of receipt.

Réus, Lucia Helena January 2011 (has links)
This study analyses how the games of knowledge and power are played and the effects of truth at work, uphold by the surgical center’s workers’ point of view and present in the ethic production on the ways of working, The main objective of the work is the professionals’ job who work in the surgical center of the Hospital de Clínicas from Porto Alegre, a teaching hospital, university and public institution, part of the University hospitals’ network of the Education Minestry and connected academically with the Universidade Federal do Rio grande do Sul(UFRGS). Having it as the main objective, I follow Michel Foucault thoughts as a theoretical framework guider on this worker’s job conditions permeated by power and knowledge relations and the games of the truth, establishing a dialogue related to the point of view issues and searching other supports that can sustain the private route for the issues beyond Foulcault’s field. The methodological proposal used in this research observed the tool of the Intervention Research and the photographic intervention strategy. The candidates were invited by posters and e-mails for the photographic production and for the meetings for pictures workshops and photographic narrative’s production. These narratives were made out collectively and allow reflecting on the truth games indicating the visibility and the invisibility in the knowledge and power process existing in this work. It was done a photographic exhibit with the images chosen by the participants in the main aisle of the surgical area with places so that workers could openly show their thoughts .The surgical center was portrayed as a space of the look, vigilance and power. The knowledge is determined from the bodies’ visibility be it from patients or from workers and this knowledge is legitimized when it comes from the surgery focus’s brightness. The frameworks produced by this study and enabled by these images spotted the elements around it, that are hidden and out of the bright focus. The pictures displays what is beyond the everyday job’s blindness and shows the “secondary” job. As much this blindness as the brightness they are pieces that are part of a strength game, they are strategies of the truth game. The visibility of these games gains new prospects through the photographic view, with its tactics of freezing in the time, several possibilities of look and the creation of a space for debates.

Aplicación de last planner en edificaciones multifamiliares

Hinostroza Gutiérrez, Diego Alberto, Manosalva Montesinos, Oscar Omar January 2015 (has links)
Through the Master program (macro programming), the mid-term planning or Look ahead Planning, succeeded by the weekly plan and daily work will be analyzed. The intermediate planning (Look ahead process) is an expansion of master program, which generates a work program that we think can be executed using information of the current project status and forecasts on the availability of resources. As is known, the Master program covers all activities of the project from the beginning to the end of it. However, planning ahead Look intervals covers only 4-8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project in the future in relation to the planning date because uncertainty about what comes next makes it meaningless greater detail. The weekly work plan is the planning that has the highest level of detail before an activity. Choose what work will be executed in the next week from what we know can be done, is called quality assignments. Only quality assignments can enter an inventory of executable work and then to plan weekly work, protecting the flow of production uncertainties, which aims to create a reliable workflow. For this study was taken as the multifamily building Dahlias, which explains in detail the implementation of look ahead to week 19 where the drain basement slab 2 was performed and analysis of weekly programming with the possible restrictions and resources for detailed to resolve them, demonstrating that applying the Last Planner maximizing production and minimizing cost.

Calestroupat, Philippe 26 April 2016 (has links)
With Lacan’s writings as a base, for who the « acting-out » is looking for the display of what remains from the division of the subject, the clinic area gives us to consider the position of the subject as an echo to the place during her infans under the eyes of her parents.Working on the assumption that, when the circularity of narcissism is broken too early or did not happen, then this circle opens to go straight and violently look for the real of the origin, of the mother, the existence feeling that could not be consolidated by the fabrication of the absence, its representaion, and the language that will order the feeling of alterity.A confrontation to the real image, first image of the body when the effect of specularisation is still not enough, leaves the subjet in an imaginary space catpured by the mother. In an effort that we have named regressive, towards this stage of the look, young people in conflicts try to get away from the appropriation of their mother or to appear before their look. The teenage girl often takes by an unconscious assignation the place of the A object, as a remaining, unspeakable Real of the family psychic economy. The place of the subject as remaining, as A, happens to be an impossible place in the speech. The mother-daughter relationship tries to find it back by tiyng reality and imaginary, in which the connection is equivalent to the capitalist speech where subject and object renew their relationship without limits. Assisting a suffering teenager out of a place close to reality and at the limits of of the speech amounts to assist the loss that an imaginary relationship is avoiding in the support of a speech elaboration.

A blind child's meaning for look : a replication of Landau & Gleitman

Murphy, Cynthia Maureen January 1987 (has links)
Landau and Gleitman's experiments investigating a blind child's meaning for look, as it applied to herself, were replicated with a three year old boy who was totally blind, and had no concomitant disorders. Several commands to look were presented within informal play sessions. Responses to the look commands were compared with responses to instructions to touch, listen and taste. Experiments were video recorded for subsequent analysis. It was found that the blind child associated the haptic perceptual modality with the visual verb, in that an instruction to look at an object elicited manual exploration of the object. His meaning for look was distinct from his meanings for the other perceptual verbs. These findings were consistent with Landau and Gleitman's findings. Landau and Gleitman's interpretation, of how a blind child's mastery of visual terms bears on the word/meaning mapping problem, is critically discussed. / Medicine, Faculty of / Audiology and Speech Sciences, School of / Graduate

Určení směru pohledu / Gaze Detection

Caha, Miloš January 2010 (has links)
Main object of this work is to design and implement the algorithm for look direction determination, respectively the head movement. More specifically, it is a system that searches face in the video and then detects points, suitable for view direction estimation of tracked person. Estimation is realized using searching transformation, which has been performed on key points during head movement. For accuracy enhancement the calibration frames are used. Calibration frames determines the key points transformation in defined view directions. Main result is an application able to determine deflection of head from straight position in horizontal and vertical direction for tracked person. Output doesn't contain only information about deflection direction, but it also contains the size of deflection.

January 2011 (has links)
A metodologia proposta é aplicada ao sistema IEEE de 300 barras, os resultados obtidos mostram o seu bom funcionamento / Abstract: Here we did a comparative analysis between different choices of the points used by the look ahead method for estimating maximum loading point of a power system. The Continued Power Flow (CPF) is used in the generation of operating points used by the look ahead method and to serve as a reference in comparison between the predicted results and the real maximum loading point. Since the accurancy of this estimative is strongly affected by choicen of these points, the CPF is modified to provide the most appropriate for the proper functioning of the method look ahead. The proposed methodology system is applied to IEEE 300 buses, the results have shown its good functioning / Mestre
