I Maken blir Bibeln – med alla dess bud och ordspråk – normer och regler som talar genom Martina och Gustav. I dialog med Bibeln träder romanens olösliga dilemma fram: äktenskapets samtidiga nödvändighet och omöjlighet. Om vilken paret för en ganska saklig och rationell diskussion. Bibelcitat blir verktyg genom vilka karaktärerna kan säga saker som annars inte skulle kunna yttras trovärdigt. Genom bibelcitaten synliggörs också ett kristet samhälles normer samt vår egen kristenhet som samhällsmedborgare. I dialog med författare framkommer filosofins särställning. Romanen iscensätter olika centrala idéer från författarnas texter. Inte minst vill jag där framhålla iscensättningen Kirkegaards profetiska utsaga om den oundvikliga olycka som väntar både den som gifter sig och den som inte gifter sig.

Decision-Making and Firearm Removal Legislation on Civil Domestic Violence Protection Orders in Arizona

abstract: Rates of domestic violence (DV) gun homicide in Arizona consistently exceed the national average (Everytown, 2015). For perpetrators, firearms continue to be their primary weapon of choice in DV homicides (Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, 2015). In Arizona, civil DV protection orders (POs) help reduce the growing rates of gun homicide through firearm removal provisions. Questioning how firearms shape judicial decision-making, this thesis contributes to existing literature on firearms and DV by exploring how judges come to interpret findings of credible threat and which factors are associated with judicial decisions to grant firearm removal pursuant to Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 13-3601. This thesis reveals how courts navigate competing concerns around victim safety and gun rights. “Good Guys”: The Ethical Lives of Gun Owners

Gun rights activists in the United States have been incredibly successful in opposing state regulation and restrictions on firearms. Activists argue that violence in the U.S. will subside not through firearm restrictions but by allowing “good” people to continue to buy, possess, and carry guns who will then be able to stop “bad” people from committing violence. Based on participant-observation with a grass-roots, gun rights organization in the state of Georgia, this thesis critically examines what it means to be a “good” gun owner. I argue that gun owners cultivate themselves ethically by learning new skills which disproportionately prioritize anonymous human attacks as the most concerning threat to one’s physical and social integrity. I further show the implications of such a worldview as being enacted in gun owners’ everyday lives.

Comparing Two Samples on the Issue of Gun Control: A Student Sample and the General Population

abstract: This thesis compares and contrasts attitudes on the issue of gun control between the general population and a student sample in the United States today. Through a comparative survey analysis design, this study aims to better understand attitudes towards gun control in the United States. Due to the fact that students may believe they are at a higher risk of gun violence, and because of their increased participation in gun control activism, this thesis hypothesizes that students will be more likely to favor restrictions on gun regulation. Although both samples share similar attitudes, these results show that students held much more passionate, negative, and dissatisfied attitudes and opinions on the current gun climate in the United States, relative to the general public. However, students are less in favor than the sample of the general public in supporting gun-safety policies when in the context of school-settings. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Political Science 2020

The gun barrel is one of the most important parts of the whole artillery system. During firing, the wear leads to reduced performance and availability. Wear in gun barrels has different types of erosion mechanisms, in particular chemical-, thermal- and mechanical erosion. This takes place in the internal ballistic process when the projectile is fired from the gun barrel and it will affect the external ballistic parameters. Therefore, an equipment is needed to monitor and measure the wear inside different calibre gun barrels. Wear in gun barrels takes place under extreme conditions during firing due tohigh gas pressures and high temperatures arise as propellant burns. The present thesis aims to develop a type of measuring equipment that should be able to measure and monitor wear inside gun barrels between the diameter ranges of A-C mm. In this master thesis, the product development process has been adapted in order to reach the following goal which is to accomplish a technical solution for the problem associated with wear in gun barrels. The product development process is a systematical approach of developing new products. The different steps that have been evaluated are the product specification, generation of concepts, selection of concepts and layout- and detail design. Before these steps where performed, a project plan was done in order to organize the project. This was then followed by a literature review to obtain information about the problems in the project and to find inspiration from similar applications. The results of the product development process led to a concept of a moveable measure-head which uses a crawler to move inside the gun barrel and adapters to be able to use inside different calibre gun barrels. Then a rotating 3D-laser scanner to measure the change in diameter of the bore. A laser distance sensor and a receiver in order to measure the straightness and to be able to know the position of the moving measure-head in the gun barrel. At last, a wireless camera to monitor the wear inside the gun barrel. The selected concept has been developed and potential solutions for the problem have been described and formed. For the next phase of the project, the concept needs to be developed into a complete model. The next phase of the project is the prototype testing phase.

Gun barrels are an important component in advanced defence systems. The gun barrels are used for direct and indirect fire and the material of the gun barrel is exposed to great strains and high temperatures. This sets high demands on the material of the gun barrel. During firing the gun barrel can be damaged. The first damage in gun barrels is the wear of the rifling followed by fatigue. When fatigue occurs cracks can propagate downwards into the bore and could result in catastrophic failure. Therefore investigation regarding the wear, the mechanisms and the underlying factors causing the damage will be performed. How and where the wear in gun barrels occur and also which wear mechanisms causing the wear. Wear in gun barrels involves extreme conditions during firing such as high gas pressure and high temperature from the burning propellant. This thesis work aims to understand how and why wear and damaging mechanisms in gun barrels occurs. Moreover how other ballistic factors influences have on the wear. The wear in gun barrels is caused by erosion from the combustion gases or/and sliding wear caused by the high-speed projectile. The phenomena of wear are complicated and factors like deformation state, types of wear, environment and process are interrelated with each other. These give the rise of wear. In this thesis, samples from three gun barrels were analysed. A new unworn gun barrel, a medium worn gun barrel and a severely worn gun barrel. From the used gun barrels 4 critical positions were identified, then samples from both surface and cross-section were obtained from the gun barrels. The surface and cross-section were analysed using different methods including optical light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to characterise the surface damage and wear mechanisms. The results from the investigation revealed the dominating wear mechanism to be thermal and chemical erosion at the positions closest to the combustion chamber with heat checks as its signature feature. The heat checks are associated with fatigue cracks developed at the surface and during thermo-mechanical loading, allows it to propagate down into the surface. For both samples at position 2, after the start of the rifling, adhesive wear was obtained too. The adhesive wear was induced by material pick-up from the driving band of the projectile during sliding. In other meaning, the material is transferred from the counter-face to the bore surface. The severely worn gun barrel had been subjected to sliding wear at the muzzle end compared to the medium worn gun barrel which hadn’t experience the same wear rate at the same position. The analysis of the cross-section examination revealed information about the structure and condition of the material. To obtain more information about mechanical properties, a hardness test was performed. The hardness test revealed a hard but brittle surface which can be sheared by the frictional force caused by the sliding projectile. The analysis of the gun barrels revealed information about wear mechanisms and damages in medium and severely worn gun barrels. The detected wear mechanism was thermal erosion, chemical erosion, mechanical erosion and sliding wear.

An Evaluation of Parent Implemented Web-Based Behavior Skills Training for Firearm Safety Skills

Behavioral skills training (BST) is effective for teaching safety skills but often requires a behavior analyst to conduct the training, which can make it costly and inaccessible for most parents or teachers. Parent-conducted BST may allow for children to receive training without the need for a trained behavior analyst. However, providing parents with training can often be difficult. Manualized training from a website could allow parents access to needed material at a low or no cost. This study evaluated a web-based manualized intervention implemented by parents for teaching firearm safety skills using BST. First, BST experts and parents validated the web-based manual. Next, we used a multiple-probe across participants design to assess the effectiveness of parent-conducted BST. Results indicate that three children acquired the safety skills after parent-conducted BST alone, and the other three children required experimenter-conducted IST. The advantages of parent-conducted BST, limitations, and areas for future research are discussed.

Guns N’ Houses : On Gun Violence and Housing Prices in Sweden’s Metropolitan Areas

This paper examines the impact of confirmed shootings on the attractiveness of a neighborhood, measured through local housing prices, in Sweden’s major metropolitan areas during 2016-2019. A novel difference-in-differences approach is proposed where control groups are selected from areas that will be exposed to shootings in the near future but have not yet been so, thus mitigating the problem from previous studies that shootings might be a result of underlying unobserved factors for the neighborhood. The results are inconclusive overall apart from Uppsala, where the estimate is negative and significant, indicating a 4.8 percent drop in nearby housing prices after a shooting. Multiple alternative specifications are used to test the robustness of the results. Overall, the negative estimate for Uppsala seems quite stable, whereas the estimated impact in other regions remains insignificant. One potential explanation could be that gun-violence is a rather new phenomena in Uppsala relative to the other regions, which could make the effect of a shooting in Uppsala more pronounced. A consideration for policy makers may then be that programs aiming to reduce gun-violence will have a larger economic impact in areas where shootings are a relatively new and arising problem.
