In-between the National and the Foreigner: A Critical Discourse Analysis of the “half-bloods” in South Korean Newspaper

Kim, Hyun Jun January 2020 (has links)
This paper seeks to examine how South Korea news medias portrayed mixed-race South Koreans in Korean society by checking articles from the newspapers Dong-A Ilbo and Kyunghyang Shinmun. The paper explores the process of formation of discourse on mixed-race in South Korea, and the contextual background that related to it by analysing about 800 newspaper articles from 1950 to 2019 through critical discourse analysis. The research is conducted within the theoretical frames of imagined community, the concept of ‘othering’, and race and ethnicity in the discourse analysis of the newspapers. The results of the study show that mixed-race people in South Korea are often stigmatised and discriminated for their difference in society as ‘others’ in the newspaper portrayals. Furthermore, the paper highlights that such portrayals of mixed race are based on ethnic nationalism and patriarchal ideas that influenced the discourse around them in South Korea.

Developing Extensions to the Walker-Unger Model in Consideration of the Panama Papers Leaks

Delory, Algot, Matusevicius, Tadas January 2023 (has links)
In 2016, the ICIJ independent organization released the leaks of the Panama Papers. Using the data presented, this thesis aims to evaluate and examine the models developed for the quantification of money laundering, analyze the variables that define the appeal of certain tax havens, and develop extensions to the Walker-Unger model. The proportion of illicit funds flowing from a source country to a host country was calculated using the Walker-Unger model as a reference while considering 35 source and 10 host countries. The variables were adjusted for statistical analyses input through multiple fractional probit regressions, and the outcome was compared to the original Walker-Unger estimates. At a 5% significance level, the research found significance between the account proportion and the independent variables. Furthermore, the evidence showcased more significant values obtained with the regression model, implying that the Walker-Unger model has become irrelevant in this modern era. Due to the following reasons, this study provides a perspective into improving the model through several recommendations.

Hultén, Gunilla January 2006 (has links)

A major purpose of this study is to describe and analyse representations of migration and migrants in three local Swedish newspapers, Arbetarbladet, Borås Tidning, and Vestmanlands Läns Tidning and one national, Dagens Nyheter, at eight selected years during the period of 1945 – 2005. The dissertation investigates continuity and change over the course of time. The study also traces how journalistic discourses relate to migration policies. The main focus is on the local papers and the interplay between local and national perspectives in expressing estrangement and national community. The main sample consists of 1 537 articles published in the first three weeks of March in the years 1945, 1955, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995 and the year 2000.

Quantitative and qualitative approaches are combined and the study is carried out within the traditions of Critical Discourse Analysis and rhetoric. One theoretical approach rests on the notion of the stranger, as conceptualized by Georg Simmel. Closely linked to this notion are the concepts of nation, culture, and identity. One purpose is to analyse how these aspects are textualised and visualised.

Despite the changes of migration to Sweden, press coverage has demonstrated a remarkable consistency in the representations of immigrants and migration policy throughout the period. The analyses indicate that there is a continuous dialogue between the press and the government agenda. Albeit the consonance between the papers, it needs to be pointed out that representations of strangers are heterogeneous. In certain respects the local papers differ from the national paper. The Dagens Nyheter was more inclined to use a negative and a conflict angle. The local papers, promoting strong place identities, were more prone to stress co-operation and shared interests. The portrayal often draws on an implicit positive self-representation of Sweden. Nationhood is still a resonant element in journalism, a late echo, as it were, of the People’s Home.

Reprezentace totalitarismu ve videohrách / Representation of totalitarianism in videgames

Vimmr, Martin Kryšpín January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the topic of representation of totalitarianism in videogames. It aims to show how the totalitarianism is depicted in selected games and whether the videogame as a medium has some influence on this depiction. Theoretical part introduces and examines all sorts of different approaches, based on which one can study videogame as a medium. An argument about the videogames as a medium of control is presented further on and is also discussed in relation with totalitarianism. Second half of theoretical chapter focuses on definition of totalitarianism which is used in the case studies later on. Empirical part analyzes four games - Half-life 2, Papers, please, Wolfenstein: the New Order and BioShock with focus on representation of totality or dystopia. The games are analyzed both with regards to their rules and fiction. The conclusion shows that totalitarianism was represented mostly by its outer activities rather than ideology which were usually represented rather marginally. However, in all cases there could be found some examples of how was the representation of totalitarianism used to merge with system of control in games.

Avila Júnior, Paulo de 09 April 2010 (has links)
O Módulo I explorou artigos científicos e o Módulo II a escrita do projeto de pesquisa. A disciplina IC01, Introdução à Ciência, foi oferecida três vezes / Understanding the scientific method fosters the development of critical thinking and logical analysis of information. Additionally, proposing and testing a hypothesis is applicable not only to science, but also to ordinary facts of daily life. Knowing the way science is done and how its results are published is useful for all citizens and mandatory for science students. A 60-h course (QBQ2006 - Introduction to Science) was created to offer undergraduate students a framework in which to learn the procedures of scientific production and publication. The course\'s main focus was biochemistry, and it was comprised of two modules. Module I dealt with scientific papers, and Module II with research project writing. Module I covered the topics: (1) the difference between scientific knowledge and common sense, (2) different conceptions of science, (3) scientific methodology, (4) scientific publishing categories, (5) logical principles, (6) deductive and inductive approaches, and (7) critical reading of scientific articles. Module II dealt with (1) selection of an experimental problem for investigation, (2) bibliographic revision, (3) materials and methods, (4) project writing and presentation, (5) funding agencies, and (6) critical analysis of experimental results. The course adopted a collaborative learning strategy, and each topic was studied through activities performed by the students. Qualitative and quantitative course evaluations with Likert questionnaires were carried out at each stage, and the results showed the students\' high approval of the course. The staff responsible for course planning and development also evaluated it positively. The Biochemistry Department of the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo has offered the course four times. Taking advantage of the resources provided by the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and the experience gained with the first offering of the course QBQ2006 another 60h course was created in distance mode (IC01 - Introduction to Science). It was offered to undergraduate students of Nutrition, Biomedicine and Medicine from the Fundação Faculdade Federal de Ciências Médicas de Porto Alegre (FFFCMPA) current Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre (UFCSPA). The course was comprised by the two modules and adopted a collaborative learning strategy, as described in the previous experience. Qualitative and quantitative course evaluations with Likert questionnaires were carried out at each stage, and the results showed the students\' high approval of the course. The staff responsible for course planning and development also evaluated it positively. The IC01, Introduction to Science, course was offered three times

Lina Bo Bardi: as moradas da alma / Lina Bo Bardi: the residences of the soul

Campello, Maria de Fatima de Mello Barreto 22 May 1997 (has links)
The central objectivcs of this dissertation are: a) to confirm lhe influence of the theme of \"spontaneous, primitive and popular sheltering\" in the works of architect Lina Bo Bardi; and b) to assess the extent of that influence during a period of her professional career. The research examines Bardi\'s work from 1939 to 1958. Those years covered the formative years at and around the university; the beginning of her professional career as an architect in Italy; and her life in Brazil when she first moved to this country to live in Sao Paulo. The central nucleus of the research presents two distinct approaches. First, a conceptual perspective in which Bardi\'s papers - essays, editorial and journalistic works, published in specialised magazines - are thoroughly examined. Secondly, a more empirical perspective examines two of her projects - the Glass House and Valéria Piacentini Cirell\'s House. In the former approach, concepts that are deeply rooted in popular practices - in Lina\'s own view - were identified. Those concepts formed the frame of reference for the second approach. What follows is an analysis of the extent to which Bardi used those theorethical devices in her own design practice. Accordingly, some tasks were completed: a) an original listing of all Bardi\'s papers written between 1939 and 1958; and b) a delailed survey of all design documentation related to the Glass and Cirell projects - this included all the drawings and published criticaI assessments of both projects. As the skelches and drawings were undated and Iacked order, a logical ordering was proposed based on the development of lhe projects. This has helped to understand Bardi\'s methodological thinking when conceiving architectural projects. The intention of the above approaches is to uncover elements of analysis, influences and sources of inspiration in Bardi\'s works and to contribute to an understanding of the griding principles of her architectural projects. The legacy of her work - due to the idiosyncratic nature of its Ianguage - presents such contrasting results, as shown by the references of the two houses analysed, that some historians and critics have regarded Bardi as self-taught and stressed the impossibility of classifying her works in any conventional school fo architecture. Lina Bo Bardi\'s works of architecture are not guided by formal issues but by issues related to previously defined principles.

For so much, we will firstly to consider what the public debt is, the reason why it happens and which are their impacts in the economy, and for the analysis of the impacts we will present different concerning approaches to the subject. Soon afterwards we will stated the main by means of the financing of public debt, detailing the impacts for each mentioned mechanism, finally in this I surrender will present the theoretical and practical concept of the sustainability of the public debt, presenting, besides, the mathematical model that will be used in the evaluation of the sustainability of the public debt in elapsing of the work. In the sequence the work analyzes the evolution of the public titles in the period from 1995 to 2010, will verify like this that the alteration of the profile of the emissions of the government's titles along the analyzed period contributed positively to the credibility and sustainability of the debt. Like this the work will make, in the sequence, the analysis of the dynamics of the public debt between 1995 and 2010, verifying that this, in spite of having if enlarged considerably during the analyzed period, it transmits a superior fiscal condition to observed her in I begin it of the period, leaning in the macroeconomics and fiscal results due to the stabilization of the economy and improvement of the administration of the public debt / Tendo em vista a crescente retomada do tema da dívida pública, principalmente devido ao agravamento da crise grega e em outros países da União Européia, causando um impacto de proporções globais, o presente trabalho propõe-se a analisar o comportamento da dívida pública brasileira entre os anos de 1995 e 2010, observando não apenas seus respectivos pontos de partida e chegada, mas o que o levou, quais variáveis foram decisivas e o porquê do governo ter tomado este rumo na administração da dívida pública, verificando se durante este período houve pontos de aparente explosão da dívida pública, o que levou a estes pontos e quais atitudes tomadas por parte do governo fizeram com que esta voltasse a uma trajetória sustentável.
