Écophysiologie de l'épinette noire des pessières à mousses et à lichens nordiques

Les changements climatiques sont susceptibles d’affecter la croissance, le développement et la régénération des pessières noires de la forêt boréale. Les échecs de régénération dans les pessières à mousses (PM) de l’ouest du Québec causent des trouées dans la mosaïque forestière dense et augmentent la proportion de pessières à lichens (PL) dans le paysage. Les objectifs de l’étude sont de déterminer si les caractéristiques contrastantes des PM et des PL engendrent différents taux de photosynthèse maximale (Amax) chez les épinettes noires sur un gradient latitudinal ou saisonnier. Ensuite, l’étude tentera de déterminer si le Amax des individus reflète leurs capacités physiologiques par leur taux de carboxylation maximal (Vcmax) et de transport des électrons maximal (Jmax) extraits de courbes de réponse au CO2. Les taux de Vcmax et Jmax sont différents entre les PM et les PL car l’acquisition de ces nutriments semble différente. La latitude influence les valeurs de Vcmax et Jmax, mais l’effet serait causé par les caractéristiques floristiques et la composition du sol des placettes plutôt que par la latitude. Les capacités physiologiques ne se reflètent pas dans les valeurs de Amax, autant pour le type de peuplement que la latitude, car Amax serait limité par la concentration en CO2 qui ne permet pas la saturation de l’enzyme rubisco. Malgré l’absence de différence entre le Amax des PM et des PL, l’augmentation de la concentration en CO2 et de la température risque de créer un écart de Amax entre les types de peuplement, considérant leurs capacités physiologiques différentes. / Climate change is likely to affect the growth, development and regeneration of black spruce stands across the boreal forest. Regeneration failures cause gaps in the dense black spruce-feathermoss (BSFM) mosaic increasing the landscape proportion of open lichen-woodland (LW). The aims of the study are to determine whether the contrasting characteristics of BSFM and LW induce different light-saturated maximum photosynthesis (Amax) in black spruce trees across a latitudinal or seasonal gradient. Then the study will attempt to determine if Amax is likely to reflect their physiological capacities based on their maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax) and maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) derived from CO2 response curves. Vcmax and Jmax are different between BSFM and LW mainly because nutrient acquisition seems different between stand types. Latitude affects values of Vcmax and Jmax, but the effect could be explained by soil and vegetation composition between experimental plots rather than by latitude. Physiological capacities do not match Amax values for stand type and latitude because Amax would be limited by CO2 concentration which does not allow saturation of rubisco. Despite the lack of difference between the Amax of BSFM and LW stands, future increase in CO2 concentration and temperature could induce a gap between their respective photosynthesis rates because of their different physiological capacities.

Behavioral Activity and Hypoxia Tolerance of African Weakly Electric Fish

In dieser Arbeit wurden die Morpho-Physiologie und das Verhalten zweier Arten Afrikanischer schwach elektrischer Fische, Marcusenius victoriae und Petrocephalus degeni, im Labor und in einem ihrer natürlichen Habitate im Lwamunda Sumpf in Uganda untersucht. Die zwei Hauptziele dieser Arbeit waren (i) tageszeitabhängige Verhaltensrhythmen (Aktivität, Habitatnutzung) im Labor und im Freiland zu untersuchen und (ii) die Ausprägung und Plastizität der morpho-physiologischen Merkmale von P. degeni zu untersuchen, die ihnen erlauben bei natürlich vorkommender, geringer Sauerstoffverfügbarkeit (Hypoxie) zu überleben. Tageszeitabhängige Verhaltensrhythmen beider Arten wurden im Labor über 42 Stunden und im natürlichen Habitat dieser Fische für sechs Tage erfasst. In den Laborversuchen verbrachten beide Arten tagsüber annähernd 100% der Zeit in einem bereitgestellten Versteck und schwammen nachts heraus um aktiv ihre Umwelt zu erkunden. Im Habitat wurden die meisten Fische in strukturell komplexen Habitaten unter schwimmenden Pflanzen detektiert. Nachts schwammen die Fische aktiv in die offenen und ungeschützten Bereiche der Lagune, vermutlich um nach Futter zu suchen und zu interagieren. Die Begleitende in-situ Messung der Sauerstoffverfügbarkeit zeigte, dass beide Arten präsent und vermutlich sogar am aktivsten waren während Phasen extremer nächtlicher Hypoxie. Zur Untersuchung der respiratorischen Merkmale von P. degeni wurden Respirometrieversuche mit hypoxie-akklimatisierten Tieren durchgeführt, Hämoglobin- und Laktatkonzentration im Blut gemessen, und morphologische Parameter an den ersten beiden Kiemenbögen erfasst. Die Fische zeigten niedrige Sauerstoffverbrauchsraten, welche sie bis zu einem sehr niedrigem äußeren Sauerstoffpartialdruck aufrechterhielten. Zusätzlich zeigten sie hohe Hämoglobin- und Laktatkonzentrationen im Blut. Bis zu 75 Tage Normoxie-Akklimatisierung führte zu reduzierter Hämoglobinkonzentration und kürzeren Kiemenfilamenten. / In this thesis, I investigated the morpho-physiology and behavior of two species of African mormyrid weakly electric fish, Marcusenius victoriae and Petrocephalus degeni, in the laboratory and in one of their natural habitats, the Lwamunda Swamp in Uganda. The two main objectives of this work were to (i) observe behavioral rhythms and habitat use patterns of both species under natural and laboratory conditions, and (ii) assess expression and plasticity of morpho-physiological traits that might enable P. degeni to survive naturally occurring low oxygen conditions (hypoxia). Behavioral rhythms were recorded in the laboratory over 42 hours and in the habitat on six sampling days. In the laboratory, both species spent close to 100% of the time in their shelter during the day and actively explore their environment at night. In the swamp lagoon, fish were most often encountered in structurally complex habitats under floating vegetation and ventured into open and unsheltered areas of the lagoon at night, presumably to forage and interact. Concomitant in-situ oxygen measurements revealed that these fish were present, and presumably most active during periods of extreme nocturnal hypoxia in their swamp habitat. To investigate respiratory traits of swamp-dwelling P. degeni, I conducted respirometry experiments and measured blood lactate and hemoglobin and gill morphometrics on the first two gill arches. Fish showed low routine oxygen consumption rates, which they maintained until a very low ambient oxygen partial pressure was reached. Additionally, they had high concentrations of hemoglobin and lactate in their blood. Up to 75 days of normoxia exposure reduced blood hemoglobin and gill filament length.

Amb l'objectiu d'analitzar com la biodiversitat i l'adaptació al clima mediterrani es tradueixen en una diversitat de trets ecofisiològics i la seva resposta a la sequera, i d'estudiar si aquesta diversitat està relacionada amb formes de creixement i amb la història evolutiva de les espècies, es van seleccionar 24 espècies mediterrànies de les Illes Balears. Es va analitzar la capacitat germinativa, els efectes de la sequera en el creixement de plàntules, respostes ecofisiològiques a la sequera a nivell foliar i l'adaptació de l'especificitat de la Rubisco. Es va observar una elevada variabilitat entre espècies, la meitat de la qual associada a les diferents formes de creixement. No s'observà cap diferenciació entre les espècies endèmiques i les no endèmiques. Aquesta elevada diversitat en els trets ecofisiològics i la seva resposta a la sequera suposa un recurs potencial per identificar caràcters adaptatius i un banc genètic per millorar la productivitat de cultius. / Con el objetivo de analizar como la biodiversidad y la adaptación al clima mediterráneo se traducen en una diversidad de caracteres ecofisiológicos y su respuesta a la sequía, y de estudiar si esta diversidad está relacionada con formas de crecimiento y con la historia evolutiva de las especies, se seleccionaron 24 especies mediterráneas de las Islas Baleares. Se observó una elevada variabilidad entre especies, la mitad de la cual asociada a las diferentes formas de crecimiento. No se encontraron diferencias entre las especies endémicas y las no endémicas. Esta elevada biodiversidad en respuesta a la sequía supone un recurso potencial para identificar caracteres adaptativos y un banco genético para la mejora de la productividad de cultivos. / The objectives of this work were to analyze how biodiversity and adaptation to Mediterranean climate is reflected in a diversity of ecophysiological traits and their responses to drought, and to study whether such diversity was related to growth forms and endemicity. The analysis covered the germination capacity, the effects of drought on seedling growth, the leaf ecophysiological responses to drought, and the adaptation of Rubisco specificity, in 24 Mediterranean species from the Balearic Islands. A wide range of variation has been observed among the species, with about half of this variability associated to different growth forms. However, no differentiation was found between endemic and non-endemic species of the Balearic Islands. The high diversity in the ecophysiological traits and their responses to drought found among Mediterranean species must be considered as a 'resource' to identify target adaptive traits for breeding plans, but also as a genetic bank to improve crop productivity.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Restoration of Butternut (Juglans cinerea)

<div>Anthropogenically driven global change is disrupting ecosystems and habitats of many plant species, straining the ability of native species to survive and reproduce. The overarching goal of this research was to holistically work towards restoration of a threatened tree species by connecting research from different disciplines. In order to do so, the threatened butternut tree (<i>Juglans cinerea</i>) and its hybrids were used as a case study. Hybridization can incorporate stress tolerance in plants and could be a potential restoration tool. Evidence in some wild butternut populations indicates that naturalized hybrids of butternut with Japanese walnut (<i>Juglans ailantifolia</i>) may be more tolerant to butternut canker disease (BCD) than butternut, but this has not been formally tested. Thus, chapter 2 examined potential BCD tolerance within and between unadmixed and hybrid butternut inoculated with two BCD fungal isolates. Differences in canker growth were observed by fungal isolate, which could help to explain some differences in BCD severity found among butternut populations. Smaller and fewer cankers and greater genetic gains were detected in hybrid families, demonstrating that hybrids warrant further evaluation as a possible breeding tool for developing BCD-resistant butternut trees.</div><div>However, even with increased disease tolerance, hybrids must possess similar ecophysiological tolerances to their native progenitor to be an effective replacement. Butternut is extremely cold hardy, but Japanese walnuts are native to a warmer ecosystem, indicating potential disparities in extreme temperature tolerances between the two species and their hybrids. Thus, samples from mature trees were subjected to cold and heat treatments to compare relative extreme temperature tolerances within butternut and between butternut, Japanese walnut, and their hybrids. Within butternut, trees from colder areas exhibited less cold damage than those from warmer areas. Differences in heat damage among provenances occurred but did not follow a clear trend. Butternut exhibited greatest cold tolerance, Japanese walnut exhibited greatest heat tolerance, and hybrids were intermediate. Thus, the utility of hybrids for restoration could be limited at the extremes of the species’ distributions.</div><div>A second, but different type of freeze test was conducted for chapter 4 using seedlings to gain a more nuanced understanding of cold tolerance within butternut and between butternut and its hybrids. No survival or damage differences were detected in butternut provenances, although seedlings from the coldest provenances experienced more delayed budbreak at the two warmest treatments than those from warmer provenances. Interspecific differences were not observed in dieback but were detected in survival and budbreak. The hybrids had greater survival than butternut from warmer provenances at the lowest temperature treatment (-38 °C), but given that temperatures that low are extremely unlikely to occur in those provenances, it is not anticipated to give the hybrids an advantage if planted in those areas. However, the hybrids’ earlier budbreak could limit the success of restoration with these hybrids in the coldest extents of butternut’s range. </div><div>If hybrids, as well as genetically modified (GM) trees, are successfully developed for effective disease tolerance and to serve as an ecologically suitable replacement, success of restoration using hybrids will ultimately depend on those directly responsible for replanting efforts. A survey was administered to land managers in 46 organizations in Indiana to gauge perceptions of hybrid and GM trees, as well as current use of hybrid trees. Land managers had stronger concern for ecological, rather than economic, issues. Agreement was highest for using hybrid and GM trees for “conservation and restoration of at-risk species”, “timber production”, and “non-timber products (fruit, syrup, etc.)”. However, perceptions varied by characteristics, such as concern type, age, and the type of land they managed. Ecological concern and the type of land being managed most strongly predicted current hybrid use. Overall, results indicate the majority of land managers in Indiana would likely be agreeable to recommendations towards using hybrids. However, most nonetheless had strong ecological concerns about their suitability as a native replacement. It is important to note, though, that consistent with the results of previous studies, great variation was seen within the performance and characteristics of the butternut hybrids in chapters 2-4. Thus, it may be possible with careful selection and breeding to harness this variation to develop disease tolerant and ecologically similar hybrids acceptable to land managers.</div>

Public perception and response to extreme heat events

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In the United States extreme heat events have grown in size and stature over the past 20 years. Urban Heat Islands exacerbate these extreme heat events leaving a sizable portion of people at risk for heat related fatalities. The evidence of this is seen in the Chicago heat wave of 1995 which killed 500 people over the course of a week and the European heat wave of 2003 which killed 7,000 people in the course of a month. The main guiding questions then become how government and the media can most effectively warn people about the occurrence of extreme heat events? Should extreme heat warnings be issued by T.V., newspaper or by radio? Even if warnings are issued will the population at large still change their behavior? Another possible question is whether people most vulnerable to extreme heat will change their behavior? A survey in 2010 by NASA will be the main basis for this analysis. This survey set out to see how well people in Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Dayton responded to extreme heat alerts by changing their behavior.

Nitrous oxide emission from riparian buffers in agricultural landscapes of Indiana

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Riparian buffers have well documented capacity to remove nitrate (NO3-) from runoff and subsurface flow paths, but information on field-scale N2O emission from these buffers is lacking. This study monitored N2O fluxes at two agricultural riparian buffers in the White River watershed (Indiana) from December 2009 to May 2011 to assess the impact of landscape and hydrogeomorphologic factors on emission. Soil chemical and biochemical properties were measured and environmental variables (soil temperature and moisture) were monitored in an attempt to identify key drivers of N2O emission. The study sites included a mature riparian forest (WR) and a riparian grass buffer (LWD); adjacent corn fields were also monitored for land-use comparison. With the exception of net N mineralization, most soil properties (particle size, bulk density, pH, denitrification potential, organic carbon, C:N) showed little correlation with N2O emission. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) identified season, land-use (riparian buffer vs. crop field), and site geomorphology as major drivers of N2O emission. At both study sites, N2O emission showed strong seasonal variability; the largest emission peaks in the riparian buffers (up to 1,300 % increase) and crop fields (up to 3,500 % increase) occurred in late spring/early summer as a result of flooding, elevated soil moisture and N-fertilization. Nitrous oxide emission was found to be significantly higher in crop fields than in riparian buffers at both LWD (mean: 1.72 and 0.18 mg N2O-N m-2 d-1) and WR (mean: 0.72 and 1.26 mg N2O-N m-2 d-1, respectively). Significant difference (p=0.02) in N2O emission between the riparian buffers was detected, and this effect was attributed to site geomorphology and the greater potential for flooding at the WR site (no flooding occurred at LWD). More than previously expected, the study results demonstrate that N2O emission in riparian buffers is largely driven by landscape geomorphology and land-stream connection (flood potential).
