Gröna urbana skolgårdar : Social-ekologisk stadsplanering för ökad resiliensFredrik, Wallström January 2024 (has links)
I den urbaniseringstrend som pågår och ansträngda situation som den moderna människan orsakat, behöver naturen skapa sig ny motståndskraft i tidsepoken antropocen. Om ekonomi och människor ska kunna fortsätta utvecklas behöver hela samhället bli bättre på att förhålla sig inom jordens planetära gränser. I takt med att förtätningar i städer sker riskerar grönområden försvinna eller transformeras till hårdgjorda ytor. Samhället måste ta ett större krafttag eftersom grönstrukturer och ekosystemtjänster bidrar med flera viktiga uppgifter. Förutom att grönområden har betydelse i uppfyllandet av olika klimat- och miljömål inom Agenda 2030, behöver beslutsfattare också utbildas från ett bredare biosfäriskt perspektiv. Om miljöarbetet bromsas upp av en bristfällig stadsplanering på lokal nivå, kan en lösning vara att ta fram olika förbättringsförslag för en grönare stadsplanering. Studiens syfte är att undersöka hur gröna skolgårdar kan bidra till social-ekolgisk resiliens i urbana miljöer, skapa välbefinnande och pedagogiska förtjänster för barn, samt belysa viktiga faktorer som myndigheter, kommuner och stadsplanerare bör beakta vid transformering av en befintlig svensk urban skolgård. Målet med studien har varit att presentera ett gestaltningsförslag, med en typisk svensk urban skolgård som utgångspunkt, utformat mer som ett sammanflätat social-ekologiskt system. Som verktyg för detta ändamål användes ett interaktivt metodupplägg, där kunskap mellan miljövetare och arkitekt integrerades. Genom en fallstudie utförd på Adolf Fredriks musikklassers skolgård i centrala Stockholm visar studien på möjligheten till att skapa nya planeringsstrategier för att barn ska få ett mer kvalitativt utrymme i den urbana miljön. Genom ett litteraturunderlag från tidigare forskning pekar resultat på att ett ökat fokus på ekosystembaserad förvaltning av skolgårdar och ett pedagogiskt lärande utomhus har god potential för att öka välbefinnande hos barn i urbana miljöer. Studiens resultat belyser hur bevarande av arter, ekosystem och dess ekosystemtjänster kan få förbättrat utrymme till att på skolgårdar frodas mer i samklang med barnen. Studien visar även att interaktiv forskning, mellan arkitekt och miljövetare, har möjlighet att konkretisera resultat som kan fungera vägledande med en metodik som även kan appliceras för att göra våra universitetsområden miljövänligare och mer resilienta. Om studiens resultat får tillräckliga spridningseffekter med att gå från ritbord till verklig handling, lämnas öppet för framtida studier att utforska. Om barn ska inspireras till ett större miljöengagemang i samhället, är en bra start att börja transformera Sveriges urbana skolgårdsytor mer som urbana grönområden. / In the ongoing urbanization trend and the strained situation caused by modern man, nature needs to create new resilience in the Anthropocene era. If economy and people are to be able to continue to develop, the earths planetary boundaries need to be taken in consideration by its inhabitants. As urban densification occurs, green areas risk disappearing or being transformed into hard surfaces. Society must therefore take a greater step because green structures and ecosystem services contribute to several important tasks. In addition to the fact that green areas are important in the fulfillment of various climate and environmental goals within Agenda 2030, decisionmakers also need to be educated from the biospheric perspective. If environmental work is slowed down by inadequate urban planning at the local level, a solution may be to develop improvement proposals for a greener urban planning. The purpose of the report is to investigate how green schoolyards can contribute to social-ecological resilience in urban environments, create well-being and educational benefits for children, and highlight factors that authorities, municipalities and urban planners should consider when transforming an existing Swedish urban schoolyard. The goal of the study has been to present a design proposal, with a typical Swedish urban school yard as a starting point, designed more like an intertwined social-ecological system. As a tool for this purpose, an interactive methodology was used, where knowledge between an environmental scientist and architect was integrated. Through a case study carried out at Adolf Fredrik's music class schoolyard in central Stockholm, the study shows the possibility of creating new planning strategies for children to have a more qualitative space in the urban environment. Through a literature from previous research, results indicate that an increased focus on ecosystem-based management of schoolyards and pedagogical learning outdoors has good potential for increasing the well-being of children in urban environments. The study's results highlight how the conservation of species, ecosystems and their ecosystem services can be improved in order to thrive in schoolyards more in harmony with the children. The study also shows that interactive research, between architect and environmental scientist, can concretize results that can serve as guidelines a methodology that can also be applied to make our university campuses more environmentally friendly and more resilient. Whether the study's findings have sufficient spillover effects to move from the drawing board to real action is left open for future studies to explore. If children are to be inspired to a greater environmental commitment in society, a good start is to transform Sweden's urban schoolyard areas more like urban green areas.

Évaluation économique des services écosystémiques dans la région de Montréal : analyse spatiale et préférences expriméesDupras, Jérôme 01 1900 (has links)
Les services écosystémiques (SE) réfèrent aux bénéfices que produisent et soutiennent la biodiversité et les écosystèmes et qui profitent à l’être humain. Dans beaucoup de cas, ils ne sont pas pris en compte dans le système économique. Cette externalisation des SE engendre des décisions sur l’utilisation du territoire et des ressources naturelles qui ignorent leur contribution à la qualité de vie des communautés. Afin notamment de sensibiliser l’opinion publique à l’importance des SE et de mieux les intégrer dans les processus décisionnels, ont été développées des démarches d’évaluation économique des SE.
Dans cette thèse, nous avons cherché à comprendre à la fois comment l’utilisation passée et actuelle des sols dans la région de Montréal affecte la valeur des SE et comment ces aménités naturelles sont perçues et valorisées par la population, dans une perspective d’aménagement futur du territoire. Pour ce faire, nous avons utilisé deux approches : l’analyse spatiale recourant aux systèmes d’information géographique et l’analyse des préférences exprimées par des techniques d’enquête.
Pour l’analyse spatiale, nous avons combiné des analyses cartographiques à des valeurs monétaires associées aux SE publiées dans la littérature. Nous avons alors estimé la valeur des écosystèmes d’un territoire par le transfert de bénéfices, de prix de marchés directs et de coûts évités. Cette démarche nous a permis de comprendre la relation entre l’utilisation actuelle du territoire du Grand Montréal écologique et la valeur des services fournis par les écosystèmes, que nous avons estimée à 2,2 milliards de dollars par année. Elle nous a permis aussi de mesurer les effets sur la valeur des SE du changement d’utilisation des sols entre les années 1960 et 2010. Nous avons montré que malgré différentes politiques de contrôle et d’encadrement de l’étalement urbain au cours de cette période, les pertes économiques non marchandes liées aux SE s’élèvent à 236 millions de dollars par année.
Pour l’analyse des préférences exprimées, nous avons utlilisé deux méthodes, l’évaluation contingente et le choix multi-attributs, avec l’objectif de mesurer le consentement à payer de répondants pour des variations dans l’aménagement du territoire. Nous avons montré d’une part que les répondants valorisent significativement l’incidence des pratiques agro-environnementales sur la qualité de l’environnement et des paysages en consentant à payer entre 159 et 333 dollars par ménage par année pour une amélioration de la diversité du paysage agricole. D’autre part, leur volonté à payer pour l’amélioration de l’état des milieux humides du Québec est estimée entre 389 et 455 dollars par ménage par année. L’utilisation conjointe des deux méthodes nous a permis d’en comparer les résultats. Nous avons en outre démontré que le choix du format de question de valorisation de l’évaluation contingente affecte la convergence des résultats.
Enfin, nous avons proposé des pistes de recherches futures portant sur l’intégration des démarches d’analyse biophysique, économique et politique dans des outils de prise de décision mieux adaptés à la dynamique des écosystèmes, de la biodiversité et des communautés humaines. / Ecosystem services (ES) refer to benefits produced and sustained by biodiversity and ecosystems that benefit humans. In many cases, they are not considered in the economic system. This externalization of SE generates decisions on land use and natural resources that ignore their contribution to the well-being of communities. In order to raise awareness of the importance of ES and better integrate them into decision-making processes, economic approaches to value ES have been developed.
In this thesis, we sought to understand both how the past and current land use in the Montreal area affects the value of ES and how these natural amenities are perceived and valued by the population in a future planning and management perspective. To accomplish this, we used two approaches: spatial analysis using geographic information systems and analysis of stated preferences by survey techniques.
In the spatial analysis approach, we combined cartographic analyzes to monetary values associated to ES published in the literature. We then estimated the value of ecosystems using benefit transfer, direct market prices and avoided costs methods. This approach has allowed us to understand the relationship between the current land use in the Greater Montreal and the economic value of the services provided by ecosystems, which we estimated at 2.2 billion dollars per year. It also allowed us to estimate the effects of land use changes between 1960 and 2010 on the value of ES. We showed that despite different land use planning policies implemented to manage urban sprawl during this period, non-market economic losses related to ES have reached 236 million dollars per year.
In the stated preferences approach, we used two methods, contingent valuation and choice experiment, with the aim of measuring the willingness to pay of respondents for proposed changes in their environment. In a first study, we showed that respondents significantly value the impact of agri-environmental practices on the quality of the environment and landscapes and are willing to pay between 159 and 333 dollars per household per year on improving the diversity of agricultural landscape. In a second study, their willingness to pay on improving the status of wetlands in Quebec is estimated at between 389 and 455 dollars per household per year. The combined use of the two methods allowed us to compare the results. We also demonstrated that the choice of valuation question format in contingent valuation affects the convergence of the results.
Finally, we propose directions for future research related to the integration of ecological, economic and political analyzes of ES that would lead to better assessments of the dynamics of ecosystems, biodiversity and human communities.

A community-based approach for evaluating tradeoffs across marine ecosystem services in OregonFreeman, Peter M. 28 September 2012 (has links)
As competing uses of our coastlines increase, natural resource agencies are employing marine spatial planning (MSP) to designate areas for different uses or activities in order to reduce conflicts while achieving ecological, economic and social objectives. A central challenge of implementing MSP is development of a rigorous approach for analyzing tradeoffs across the provision of ecosystem services (i.e., the benefits humans receive from nature). This study develops an operational approach to this problem that is founded on community-based methods, ecological production theory, and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). The approach merges ecological models with surveys to identify marine ecosystem services for use in tradeoff analysis. The approach allows for a single set of marine ecosystem services to at once be valued by local stakeholders and measured by biologists, thus connecting social and biological monitoring efforts.
To develop the approach in a real-world context, I examined ecosystem services associated with nearshore marine ecosystems in Oregon, where marine reserves are being introduced for biodiversity conservation. I worked with stakeholder focus groups in three Oregon communities to identify 24 marine ecosystem services. I then linked the ecosystem services with ecological indicators, which I then consolidated to derive 11 items for use in a survey-based tradeoff analysis exercise. I administered the survey to a nonrandom sample of stakeholders in Oregon (n=31), from which their relative preferences and preference weights for ecosystem services were derived. The weights and preference measures may then be used in MSP decision-making.
Furthermore, I grouped the stakeholder survey data in three ways: by location of residence (coastal vs. non-coastal), by eight categories of affiliation (e.g., business owners, conservationists, commercial and recreational fishers, etc.), and by resource use patterns. I then analyzed the various groupings of stakeholders for within- and between-group homogeneity of preferences. Results of the analyses showed that there are statistically significant variations in preferences within and between most groupings. Capturing the variations in stakeholder preferences is important when developing policies that affect different stakeholder groups. Thus, when implementing the survey instrument, I suggest random sampling of stakeholders stratified by location, affiliation, and resource use.
This study provides one of the first examples of a systems-based approach to ecosystem service valuation operationalized to inform MSP, and novel features of the approach have a number of implications for advancing marine research and management. First, by using stakeholders to identify ecosystem services, the approach allows for a tailored implementation of ecosystem-based management at the community level. Second, by integrating ecological and economic information on the provision and value of ecosystem services, the approach provides relevant data for MSP decision-making during the siting, evaluation, and monitoring stages. And third, by applying both stated-preference and MCDA methods, the approach may capture the array of values represented by diverse stakeholder groups. / Graduation date: 2013

Det mänskliga samhället är beroende av de ekosystemtjänster som naturen förser oss med. Trots det finns det mycket som visar att ekosystemtjänster minskar i mängd och funktion. Det största hotet mot ekosystemtjänsterna är en förändrad markanvändning där naturområden exploateras eller förändras i hög grad. För att uppnå en mer hållbar markanvändning ska ekosystemtjänster integreras i fysisk planering. Den metod som vunnit mest slagkraft i det är värdering av ekosystemtjänster. Ekosystemtjänster kan värderas på fyra olika sätt där den monetära värderingen varit enklast att applicera på nuvarande fysisk planering och därför blivit det mest använda. Det finns dock en problematik med att den monetära värderingen av ekosystemtjänster blivit den mest använda. Problemet existerar i att vissa former av ekosystemtjänster inte går att värdera monetärt. Något som skapar en obalans i vilka ekosystemtjänster som framgångsrikt integreras i den fysiska planeringen. Den här studien har utförts för att undersöka vilken roll den kvalitativa värderingen av ekosystemtjänster kan spela i fysisk planering. För att undersöka det utfördes en fallstudie på orten Grönby i Trelleborgs Kommun. Först utfördes en dokumentanalys för att undersöka hur Trelleborgs kommun arbetat med ekosystemtjänster i styrdokument. Sedan utfördes en go-alongintervjustudie där informanter fick värdera de naturområden och ekosystemtjänster som fanns i närområdet. Rollen som den kvalitativa värderingen av ekosystemtjänster kan bidra med är att den har möjligheten att integrera medborgare i den fysiska planeringen för ekosystemtjänster. Resultatet korrelerade genom det med tidigare studier om att kvalitativ värdering bidrar med andra lager, dimensioner, kunskaper och beskrivningar av känslor som andra värderingar av ekosystemtjänster exkluderar. Det belyste även faktorer som bidrar till värderingen. Några av dem faktorerna var: den visuella upplevelsen, möjligheten till aktiviteter, möten med vilda arter och chansen till återhämtning. / The human society is to a great extent dependent on the ecosystem services that nature provides for us. Despite this, there is a lot of evidence showing that ecosystem services decrease both in amount and in function. The greatest threat to ecosystem services is a changein land use. Where natural areas are being exploited or changed in a large scale. To achieve a more sustainable usage of land, ecosystem services is going to be integrated in the planning of land usage. The best available method for integrating ecosystem services is evaluation of ecosystem services. There are four different methods for evaluating ecosystem services wherethe monetary evaluation has gained the greatest breakthrough. The problem however is that some ecosystem services cannot be evaluated in monetary values. Something that cases an imbalance in which types of ecosystem services that is successfully integrated in the planning of land usage. This study aimed to analyze what role that qualitative evaluation of ecosystem services can fulfill in the planning of land usage. To investigate that, a case study was conducted about the area of Grönby in Trelleborgs municipality. Firstly, an analysis over policy documents from Trelleborgs municipality were analyzed to gain an understanding of the municipality’s work with ecosystem services. A qualitative evaluation of the surrounding ecosystem services was conducted by interviewing local residents in a go-along interview. The role that qualitative evaluation of ecosystem services can provide is that it offers local residents to participate in the planning of land use. The result of the study correlated with former studies that qualitative evaluation of ecosystem services can highlight other types of layers, dimensions, knowledge, and description of emission that other method of evaluation of ecosystem services excludes. In the study there was also some findings about which types of factors that affect the qualitative evaluation of ecosystem services. Some of the factors were: the visual experience, the possibility to participate in activities in the natural areas, the encounter with wildlife and the opportunity for recovery.

surrounding natural environment into account (McConnachie and Shackleton, 2012: 2). Current
approaches focussing on the integration of Urban Planning and Urban Ecology seek to address
these issues of integrated planning. Urban Ecology practice aims to describe the study of (1)
humans in human settlements, of (2) nature in human settlements, and of (3) the joined
relationships between humans and nature. Urban Ecology thus forms a major part of Urban and
Spatial Planning, with regard to the objectives of sustainable planning and development, green
infrastructure planning, and resilience.
The role and impact of green spaces to support sustainable human settlements are no new
phenomenon (Byrne & Sipe, 2010: 7). This is related to the different benefits which nature
provides, referred to in this research as ecosystem services (or environmental benefits) of green
spaces. Green spaces, in this sense, are fundamental areas in human settlements, in need of
intentional and structured planning approaches to enhance sustainability and said
environmental benefits. It is important to realise that the environment in urbanized areas is
dependent on the local communities (in terms of conservation and appropriate planning
approaches), but that local communities (society) are also dependent on the environment (in
terms of certain benefits which are provided by the said green spaces and environment).
Rural settlements in South Africa experience various problems and challenges in terms of
planning for the environment through green spaces (as well as sustainability), mainly as a result
of the fragmentation of these rural areas, the existence of lost spaces, urbanisation, urban
sprawl and poverty (Trancik, 1986; Barnett, 1995; IIED, 2000; DEAT, 2006; McMahan et al,
2002). This research attempted to address the challenges of integrated planning and green
space provision in a local rural context, by means of: (1) A literature study encompassing
research on Urban Ecology; Urban Planning; environmental dimension of planning; provision of
ecosystem services; green infrastructure planning; resilience, and relevant policies and
legislation; (2) An empirical investigation and comparative evaluation of international case
studies, along with a local case study; and (3) drawing conclusions and recommendations for
the local case study, based on the international approaches and identified best-practices.
This research evaluated the spatial and environmental benefits of green space and enhanced

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Ecosystem service research has grown significantly in recent years, highlighting links between ecosystem services and human well-being. Few studies are however, geared towards providing user-friendly, user-useful and user-relevant information suitable for implementing effective local management of areas that deliver ecosystem services, resulting in a gap between ecosystem service research and management.
In response to this challenge, it has been argued that in order to safeguard the benefit flows provided by ecosystems, the concept of ecosystem services should be mainstreamed into land-use (and water-use) planning and management processes. As the conservation of ecosystem services is ultimately a social process operating in a social context, understanding the complexity of the research-management interface demands input from a range of stakeholders. Thus, mainstreaming the environment into decision making requires multi-stakeholder engagement processes that facilitate the co-production and exchange of knowledge.
Accordingly, through the use of a transdisciplinary, mixed method approach, this dissertation contributes to a better understanding of some of the opportunities and challenges for mainstreaming ecosystem services in development planning at a local level, using a case study in the Eden District (Eden) of South Africa. Through an extensive stakeholder engagement process which explored what the information needs, responsibilities and capacities of decision makers in Eden are, both opportunities that facilitate the integration of ecosystem service information in decision making, and challenges impeding integration, have been identified. This research found that despite a history of ecosystem service research in Eden, there has been limited integration of the concept of ecosystem services into decision-making processes driving development. Insufficient capacity, limited resources, minimal proactive planning, a weak regulatory environment, entrenched disciplinary thinking and insufficient communication amongst diverse stakeholders on the benefits of using an ecosystem-based approach remain as challenges for the mainstreaming of ecosystem services in decision making. However, strategic opportunities for mainstreaming ecosystem services into decisions regarding current and future development trajectories were also found. It was found that the development, and nurturing of transdisciplinary learning networks that are problem driven, and action oriented, using a communities of practice model of engagement, can facilitate legitimate knowledge exchange processes. In this regard, the role of individual and institutional knowledge brokers was found to be critical. It was also found that the concept of risk was useful as a mainstreaming tool in bridging the gaps between different disciplines, and between science, policy and practice. A frame of risk enabled different disciplinary and knowledge communities to participate in joint activities and discussions during which information was co-produced and exchanged. Through this work, new relationships were built that facilitated both learning and action with regards to the importance of ecosystem services for mitigating risk. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ekosisteemdiens-navorsing het aansienlik gegroei in die afgelope jare, met ‘n klem op die verband tussen ekosisteemdienste en menslike welsyn. Min ondersoeke is egter gerig op die verskaffing van gebruikersvriendelike, -nuttige en -relevante inligting wat geskik is vir die implementering van doeltreffende plaaslike bestuur van die gebiede wat ekosisteemdienste lewer, en dit lei tot 'n gaping tussen ekosisteemdiens-navorsing en -bestuur.
In reaksie op hierdie uitdaging word aangevoer dat ekosisteemdienste gehoofstroom moet word in prosesses ter beplanning en bestuur van grond- en watergebruik, ten einde die voordele wat deur ekosisteme gebied word, te beskerm. Gevolglik, deur die toepassing van `n transdissiplinêre, gemengde metode benadering in `n gevallestudie in die Eden Distrik (Eden) van Suid-Afrika, dra hierdie verhandeling by tot `n beter begrip van sommige van die geleenthede en uitdagings verbonde aan die hoofstroming van ekosisteemdienste in ontwikkelingsbeplanning op 'n plaaslike vlak. Deur `n uitvoerige proses van deelname met belanghebbendes is inligting benodig deur besluitnemers in Eden, sowel as hul verantwoordelikhede en vermoëns, verken, en sodoende is beide die geleenthede wat die integrasie van ekosisteemdiens-inligting in besluiteming fasiliteer, en uitdagings wat integrasie belemmer, geïdentifiseer. Hierdie navorsing het bevind dat, ten spyte van `n geskiedenis van ekosisteemdiens-navorsing in Eden, is daar beperkte integrasie van die konsep van ekosisteemdiens in besluitnemingsprosesse wat ontwikkeling dryf. Onvoldoende kapasiteit, beperkte hulpbronne, minimale proaktiewe beplanning, 'n swak reguleringsomgewing, verskanste dissiplinêre denkwyses en onvoldoende kommunikasie tussen uiteenlopende belanghebbendes oor die voordele verbonde aan die gebruik van 'n ekosisteembenadering, bly uitdagings vir die hoofstroming van ekosisteemdienste in besluitneming. Maar strategiese geleenthede vir die hoofstroming van ekosisteemdienste in
besluitneming in verband met huidige en toekomstige ontwikkelingsbane is ook aangetref. Daar is bevind dat, deur transdissiplinêre leernetwerke wat probleemgedrewe en aksie-georiënteerd is, te ontwikkel en koester met behulp van 'n praktykgemeenskappemodel van betrokkenheid, legitieme kennisuitruilingsprosesse gefasiliteer kan word. In hierdie verband is die rol van individuele en institusionele kennismakelaars as krities bevind. Daar is ook bevind dat die konsep van risiko nuttig is as 'n hoofstromings-instrument in die oorbrugging van die gaping tussen die verskillende dissiplines, en tussen wetenskap, beleid en praktyk. `n Raamwerk van risiko het verskillende dissiplinêre en kennisgemeenskappe in staat gestel om deel te neem aan gesamentlike aktiwiteite en besprekings, waartydens inligting saam geproduseer en uitgeruil is. Deur hierdie werk is nuwe verhoudings gevestig, wat beide leer en optrede rakende die belang van ekosisteemdienste vir risikotempering gefasiliteer het.

Potential for synthesis between REDD+ and community forest management as understood through the lens of global political ecologyChretien, Jonathon 31 January 2013 (has links)
Global climate change is one of the defining issues of the 21st century. The phenomenon of natural climate variation being pushed beyond normal ranges has been fueled largely by industrial activities and those which support them (i.e. land-use change and the over-exploitation of natural resources). The urgency is well established with reports demonstrating an increased occurrence of rare, highly damaging weather events, and shifts in the natural range of species. The necessity of action on climate change has resulted in the development of novel global initiatives designed to address the problem across global and regional scales. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) is emblematic of this new wave of conservation strategy. It brings together parties which are often seen as opposed on environmental issues in collaborative environmental practise.
This thesis explores the development of REDD+ as an effective and equitable solutions to this problem. REDD+ is a policy architecture designed for global deployment, the success of which will depend largely upon the engagement and involvement of local community groups. Community forest management (CFM) may inform the REDD+ design process, and enhance both land-use strategies by way of synergy. The pathway to that point is, however, uncertain and marred with potential pitfalls. This thesis uses the instructive and critical lens of political ecology to assess the potential for integrating greater CFM elements into the REDD+ policy structure. It explores how the narratives of CFM and REDD+ clash at discursive levels, while also identifying elements of each which may make them mutually beneficial. The thesis finds that much of the conflict between positions on REDD+ are the result of contrasting environmental understandings, some of which are informed by negative experiences with past environmental conservation initiatives. Greater community-centric attributes may assist in improving the local and regional acceptability of REDD+ projects by appealing to the “alternative” values of forest-dependent peoples. Experimental biodiversity enrichment in an oil-palm plantationGérard, Anne 15 November 2016 (has links)
Die großflächige Umwandlung von tropischen Wäldern hat zu dramatischen Verlusten von Biodiversität und assoziierten Ökosystemdienstleistungen und –funktionen geführt. Indonesien ist ein besonders schwerwiegendes Beispiel für den Verlust von Waldflächen und Biodiversität. Landumnutzungen, in starkem Maße durch den Anbau von Ölpalmen vorangetrieben, stellen eine erhebliche Bedrohung für die außergewöhnlich hohe Biodiversität des Landes dar. Landwirtschaftssysteme, wie Agroforstsysteme, können hingegen genutzt werden, um die Biodiversität und Ökosystemfunktionen in von Ölpalmen dominierten Landschaften zu erhöhen. In Regionen, in denen Ölpalmplantagen bereits die Landschaft dominieren, kann diese Erhöhung nur durch systematische Renaturierung erfolgen. Die zugrunde liegenden ökologischen und soziökonomischen Prozesse und damit verbundene Beschränkungen und Kompromisse von Renaturierungsmaßnahmen in von Ölpalmen dominierten Landschaften sind jedoch weitgehend unbekannt.
Um diese Wissenslücke zu schließen, habe ich mit Kollegen aus Deutschland und Indonesien ein Langzeitexperiment zur Erhöhung der Biodiversität aufgebaut. Wir haben experimentell Bäume in Form von „Inseln“ in eine konventionelle Ölpalmplantage gepflanzt und hierbei systematisch die Flächengröße, das Diversitätslevel und die Artzusammensetzung variiert. Wir haben hierfür sechs multifunktionale heimische Baumarten ausgewählt. Auf der Fläche der Bauminseln haben wir einen Teil der Ölpalmen gefällt, um die Lichtverfügbarkeit für die gepflanzten Bäume durch eine reduzierte Ölpalmdichte zu erhöhen.
In dieser Doktorarbeit stelle ich den Aufbau des Experiments vor und gebe einen breiten Einblick in anfängliche Auswirkungen des Experiments, indem ich ökologische Aspekte in Betracht ziehe, sowie Veränderungen hinsichtlich des Ernteertrags. Da die Zeit kurz nach der Pflanzung ein Nadelöhr für die Langzeitetablierung der Bäume darstellt, ist sie sehr kritisch, um die erwünschten Renaturierungserfolge in der Zukunft zu erzielen. Des Weiteren kann die Anfangszeit auch aus der Sicht der Landwirte eine entscheidende Hürde darstellen, da der Nutzen der Bauminseln erst lange Zeit nach ihrer Pflanzung entsteht.
Zuerst beschreibe ich Umweltvariablen und biotische Charakteristika der den experimentellen Flächen assoziierten Vegetation, Invertebraten und Vögel vor der Errichtung des Experiments, sowie anfängliche Auswirkungen des Experiments auf die Fauna. Ein Jahr nach der Errichtung des Experiments hatten die Baumpflanzungen einen insgesamt positiven Effekt auf die Artengemeinschaften von Vögeln und Invertebraten in der Plantage. Die Größe der Bauminseln wirkte sich lediglich auf die Diversität und Abundanz von Invertebraten positiv aus, die somit auf kleinskalige Veränderungen reagierten. Ausgehend von diesen Ergebnissen erwarte ich einen weiteren Anstieg der Biodiversität und Ökosystemfunktionen in der Zukunft.
Danach berichte ich über den Anwuchserfolg der Bäume und ermittle die wichtigsten Determinanten für den Wuchs und das Überleben der Bäume. Insgesamt sind die Bäume gut angewachsen, jedoch gab es große Unterschiede zwischen den Baumarten hinsichtlich relativer Höhenwachstums-, Dickenwachstums- sowie Überlebensraten. Arten mit hohen Wachstumsraten wiesen vorwiegend auch hohe Überlebensraten auf. Auf Versuchsflächenebene hatten Standortbedingungen, Flächengröße und Diversitätslevel der gepflanzten Bäume lediglich einen geringen Einfluss auf das mittlere Baumwachstum und die Überlebensrate. Auf Individuenebene habe ich signifikante Nachbarschaftseffekte festgestellt. Hohe benachbarte Bäume und die Distanz zu verbleibenden Ölpalmen begünstigten die Entwicklung der Bäume. Noch ist es zu früh zu entscheiden, welche der Baumarten sich generell am besten eignen, um Renaturierungsziele zu erreichen. Unterschiede in der anfänglichen Entwicklung liefern jedoch wichtige Informationen für eine zukünftige Bewertung der Arten.
Zuletzt präsentiere ich Auswirkungen des Experiments auf den Ölpalmertrag. Nach zwei Jahren waren die Erträge pro Ölpalmindividuum erhöht, sowohl auf als auch direkt neben den Versuchsflächen. Die geschätzten Ertragsänderungen für die verschiedenen Flächengrößen unter Einbezug von Ernteverlusten durch gefällte Ölpalmen sowie Effekte auf benachbarte Ölpalmen deuten darauf hin, dass die erhöhten Ernteerträge insbesondere in großen Bauminseln mindestens das Fällen von Ölpalmen kompensiert haben. Diese Ergebnisse, die in der frühen Phase der Bauminseletablierung erzielt wurden, sind vielversprechend für die Erarbeitung nachhaltiger Managementoptionen für Ölpalmplantagen, die ökologische und ökonomische Funktionen in Einklang bringen.
Die anfänglichen Auswirkungen waren stärker und insbesondere aus ökonomischer Perspektive profitabler als ich erwartet habe. Die Nachbarschaftseffekte und die Auswirkungen der experimentell veränderten Variablen waren bislang jedoch überwiegend schwach. Ich erwarte, dass diese Auswirkungen mit der Zeit stärker ausgeprägt sein werden. Durch Erkenntnisse, die aus zukünftigen Langzeitbeobachtungen des Experiments, das ich in dieser Doktorarbeit vorstelle, gewonnen werden, können Wissenslücken geschlossen werden. Somit kann die Ausarbeitung von Managementrichlinien für von Ölpalmen dominierten Landschaften ermöglicht werden, die sowohl ökologisch verbessert als auch ökonomisch lohnenswert sind. Diese Doktorarbeit stellt einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur generellen Beurteilung des Experiments dar, wodurch darüber hinaus auch neue Erkenntnisse für die Renaturierungswissenschaft gewonnen werden können.
