Surfaces Designed for High and Low Friction / Ytor utformade för hög och låg friktion

Pettersson, Ulrika January 2005 (has links)
This thesis comprises tribological studies of extremely well-defined surfaces of different designs. Both low-friction and high-friction surfaces were manufactured and experimentally evaluated. In the low-friction studies, lithography and anisotropic etching of silicon was first used as a texturing technique. The textured surfaces were subsequently PVD coated with TiN or DLC to achieve tribologically relevant interfaces. The results showed that under starved lubricated conditions, fine surface textures lowered the coefficient of friction and the wear rate. It was shown that also the orientation of the texture is of major importance for the lubricating function. Further, a novel embossing technique was developed, permitting texturing of steel and other materials. A micro mechanically designed diamond tool was used to emboss steel surfaces. The roller/piston contact from a hydraulic motor was simulated and introduction of an embossed texture on the piston decreased the level and the fluctuation of the friction. The effect of the texture was here similar to the effect of an additional polish step. However, in general it is not an easy task to substantially improve a boundary lubricated contact by introducing a texture. Studies of high friction surfaces were performed on micro mechanically designed diamond surfaces equipped with sharp pyramids or ridges. Just as theory predicts, the coefficient of friction was dependent on the shape of the ploughing bodies, but not on the counter material or the load. The tested surfaces resulted in static coefficients of friction between 1.1 and 1.6, depending on surface design and orientation. These are extremely high values, and therefore very interesting for practical applications requiring a high static friction. Conclusively, the present thesis shows that it is possible to design and produce surfaces both for improved lubrication in sliding contact and for substantially improved high friction performance in static contacts.

Superhydrophobic Aluminum Surfaces: Preparation Routes, Properties and Artificial Weathering Impact

Thieme, Michael, Blank, Christa, Pereira de Oliveira, Aline, Worch, Hartmut, Frenzel, Ralf, Höhne, Susanne, Simon, Frank, Pryce Lewis, Hilton G., White, Aleksandr J. 18 March 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Among the materials that can be treated in order to impart superhydrophobic properties are many originally hydrophilic metals. For this, they must undergo a sequential treatment, including roughening and hydrophobic coating. This contribution presents various preparation routes along with various characterization methods, such as dynamic contact angle (DCA) measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectroscopic techniques (FT–IRRAS, XPS, EIS). Micro-rough surfaces of pure and alloyed aluminum were generated most easily by using a modifie Sulfuric Acid Anodization under Intensifie conditions (SAAi). This produces a micro-mountain-like oxide morphology with peak-to-valley heights of 2 μm and sub-μm roughness components. Additionally, micro-embossed and micro-blasted surfaces were investigated. These micro-roughened initial states were chemically modifie with a solution of a hydrophobic compound, such as the reactive f uoroalkylsilane PFATES, the reactive alkyl group containing polymer POMA, or the polymer Teflo ® AF. Alternatively, the chemical modificatio was made by a Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition (HFCVD) of a PTFE layer. The latter can form a considerably higher thickness than the wet-deposited coatings, without detrimental leveling effects being observed in comparison with the original micro-rough surface. The inherent and controllable morphology of the PTFE layers represents an important feature. The impacts of a standardized artificia weathering (WTH) on the wetting behavior and the surface-chemical properties were studied and discussed in terms of possible damage mechanisms. A very high stability of the superhydrophobicity was observed for the f uorinated wet-deposited PFATES and Teflo ® AF coatings as well as for some of the PTFE layer variants, all on SAAi-pretreated substrates. Very good results were also obtained for specimens produced by appropriate mechanical roughening and PTFE coating.

No. of bitstreams: 1 WilfredoBF_TESE.pdf: 4144764 bytes, checksum: ae0670814eb6793d7e5af7d0973a9f65 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-26 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / Several research lines show that sleep favors memory consolidation and learning. It has been proposed that the cognitive role of sleep is derived from a global scaling of synaptic weights, able to homeostatically restore the ability to learn new things, erasing memories overnight. This phenomenon is typical of slow-wave sleep (SWS) and characterized by non-Hebbian mechanisms, i.e., mechanisms independent of synchronous neuronal activity. Another view holds that sleep also triggers the specific enhancement of synaptic connections, carrying out the embossing of certain mnemonic traces within a lattice of synaptic weights rescaled each night. Such an embossing is understood as the combination of Hebbian and non-Hebbian mechanisms, capable of increasing and decreasing respectively the synaptic weights in complementary circuits, leading to selective memory improvement and a restructuring of synaptic configuration (SC) that can be crucial for the generation of new behaviors ( insights ). The empirical findings indicate that initiation of Hebbian plasticity during sleep occurs in the transition of the SWS to the stage of rapid eye movement (REM), possibly due to the significant differences between the firing rates regimes of the stages and the up-regulation of factors involved in longterm synaptic plasticity. In this study the theories of homeostasis and embossing were compared using an artificial neural network (ANN) fed with action potentials recorded in the hippocampus of rats during the sleep-wake cycle. In the simulation in which the ANN did not apply the long-term plasticity mechanisms during sleep (SWS-transition REM), the synaptic weights distribution was re-scaled inexorably, for its mean value proportional to the input firing rate, erasing the synaptic weights pattern that had been established initially. In contrast, when the long-term plasticity is modeled during the transition SWSREM, an increase of synaptic weights were observed in the range of initial/low values, redistributing effectively the weights in a way to reinforce a subset of synapses over time. The results suggest that a positive regulation coming from the long-term plasticity can completely change the role of sleep: its absence leads to forgetting; its presence leads to a positive mnemonic change / Diversas linhas de pesquisa demonstram que o sono favorece a consolida??o de mem?rias e o aprendizado.

Avaliação da replicagem de moldes torneados com ferramenta de diamante usando prensagem a quente em polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA) / Evaluation of the replication of molds generated from single point diamond turning using hot embossing in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

Robson Alves de Oliveira 14 December 2006 (has links)
In this work, different types of microstructures were generated by single point diamond turning and microindentation for will replicated through the hot embossing. Tests were carried to evaluate the generation these microstructures by two distinct methods: micro-deformation and micro-machining, planned to observe the replication of the mark generated by the Vickers indenter (Pyramidal) and the latter by material removal (single point diamond turning). A review on several manufacturing processes applied to replication of microfeatures, is presented. The materials used as mould and replication workpiece were electroless copper and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), respectively. Initially, the machinability of electroless copper was evaluated under different cutting conditions to determinate appropriate turning parameters to obtain very fine surface finish (roughness). It was observed that for f = 10 microns of revolution (feed rate) and ap = 5 microns (depth of cut), the surface presented the roughness’ lowest value, i.e., 2,81 nm to medium roughness (Ra) and 13,4 nm to theoretical roughness (Rt). Moreover, it was observed that the microstructure of the material plays a fundamental role on roughness, because of the elastic recovery of grains due to the anisotropy of the polycrystalline structure of copper. The microfeatures generated were the following: a) spherical lens, b) sinusoidal profile and concentrical grooves. The results showed that it is feasible to reproduce, with good agreement, the microfeatures by means of hot embossing. It was observed that thin edges and fine surfaces with roughness around 10 nm rms were well replicated.

Graphic Content Warning; Personal and Political Traumas

Wardell, Emily K 01 January 2019 (has links)
The written portion of this thesis work is meant to address and further investigate the visual work created using mediums of print and found video. This artistic research has been interested in examining varying associations with truth, recollection, and evidence. This includes the recollection of public histories and news-media narratives as well as my own history and trauma. Through this work my aim was to create a deconstruction and revolt against how associations are formed, and how to understand imagery as information. This thesis first discusses my relationship to appropriated imagery, then connects and examines it through the addition of poetic elements and events from my own lived experience.

Engineering microchannels for vascularization in bone tissue engineering / Synthèse de microcanaux bioactifs pour la vascularisation

Aor, Bruno 17 December 2018 (has links)
In vitro, tubular-like structures formation with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was investigated by combining material chemistry functionalization and three-dimensional geometry development. Polycarbonate (PC) was used as a template for the development of the scaffold. Natural polysaccharide’s film based on alternate layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of hyaluronic acid (HA) and chitosan (CHI), was first applied to PC surface and characterized in terms of thickness growth both, in dry conditions using ellipsometry, and confocal lascar scanning microscopy (CLSM). This first functionalization results in a complete coating of the PC layer. Further biofunctionalization with one adhesive peptide (RGD) and two angiogenetic peptides (SVV and QK) was investigated, immobilizing those peptides on the carboxylic group of HA previously deposited, using the well-known carbodiimide chemistry. The labeled version of each peptide was used to characterize the peptides’ immobilization and penetration into the polyelectrolytes layers, resulting in a successful grafting with complete penetration through the entire thickness of the LbL. In vitro tests were performed using HUVECs to assess their adhesion efficiency and their metabolic activity on the LbL with and without peptide immobilization, resulting in a preliminary improved activity when peptide-combinations is used. Finally, PC micro-channels (μCh) were first developed and characterized, and the rest of the experiments were performed on μCh of 25μm width, functionalized with (HA/CHI)12.5 architecture (PC-LbL) with RGD and QK peptides (PC-RGD+QK) or with RGD and SVV peptides (PC-RGD+SVV). Our first tubulogenesis experiment surprisingly showed the formation of tubular-like structures already after 2h of incubation using the double-peptides combination but only using PC-RGD+QK the tubes were present also after 3 and 4 hours of culture. The co-culture experiment with human pericytes derived from placenta (hPC-PL) demonstrates how the stabilization of the tubes was improved after 3 and 4 hours also for the PC-RGD+SVV sample. Globally our bio-functional material with PC-RGD+QK and PC-RGD+SVV peptides allow the formation of tubular-like structure in both mono and co-culture experiment.
