A: Alpha-Activity of Natural Samarium B: A Search for Neutronic Nuclei

Gupta, Moolchand 10 1900 (has links)

The alpha-activity of natural samarium has been studied using an ionization chamber. A gridless ionization chamber has been developed in order to obtain high resolution and high sensitivity. The half lives and the energies of the alpha decay of Sm147 and Sm148 were measured where as the alpha-activity of Sm149 and Sm146 could not be detected.

Experiments were carried out in order to search for the existence of Particle stable neutron clusters in the range of Mass 6-10 as a component of a nuclear reactor flux and as the product of high energy proton spallation of heavy nuclei.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Energy decay in vortices

Lönn, Björn January 2011 (has links)
The long time energy decay of vortices for several different initial flow scenarios is investigated both theoretically and numerically. The theoretical analysis is based on the energy method. Numerical calculations are done by solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations using a high order stable finite difference method. The simulations verify the theoretical conclusion that vortices decay at a slow rate compared to other types of flows. Several Reynolds numbers and grid sizes in both two and three dimensions are considered.

In particular, in the first chapter we review some issues related to a number of results derived from the general theory of functional analysis, which will be applied during this dissertation. The next chapter will discuss an equation of the fourth order dissipative plate with nonlinear perturbations of type p - Laplacian and locally Lipschitz and memory. Continuing, we prove the exponential stability of energy corresponding to the homogeneous problem with second-order term of memory.

Stability of charged rotating black holes for linear scalar perturbations

Civin, Damon January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, the stability of the family of subextremal Kerr-Newman space- times is studied in the case of linear scalar perturbations. That is, nondegenerate energy bounds (NEB) and integrated local energy decay (ILED) results are proved for solutions of the wave equation on the domain of outer communications. The main obstacles to the proof of these results are superradiance, trapping and their interaction. These difficulties are surmounted by localising solutions of the wave equation in phase space and applying the vector field method. Miraculously, as in the Kerr case, superradiance and trapping occur in disjoint regions of phase space and can be dealt with individually. Trapping is a high frequency obstruction to the proof whereas superradiance occurs at both high and low frequencies. The construction of energy currents for superradiant frequencies gives rise to an unfavourable boundary term. In the high frequency regime, this boundary term is controlled by exploiting the presence of a large parameter. For low superradiant frequencies, no such parameter is available. This difficulty is overcome by proving quantitative versions of mode stability type results. The mode stability result on the real axis is then applied to prove integrated local energy decay for solutions of the wave equation restricted to a bounded frequency regime. The (ILED) statement is necessarily degenerate due to the trapping effect. This implies that a nondegenerate (ILED) statement must lose differentiability. If one uses an (ILED) result that loses differentiability to prove (NEB), this loss is passed onto the (NEB) statement as well. Here, the geometry of the subextremal Kerr-Newman background is exploited to obtain the (NEB) statement directly from the degenerate (ILED) with no loss of differentiability.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 9090532 bytes, checksum: d4fefb1d97e9c6d585d5d18a33abf752 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-11-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In this thesis we study controllability results, asymptotic behavior and inverse problem related to some problems of the theory of partial di erential equations. Two particular systems are the focus of the study: the Mindin-Timoshenko system, describing the vibrational motion of a plate or a beam, and the phase eld system describing the temperature and phase of a medium having two distinct physical states. The rst chapter is devoted to the study of the 1-D Mindlin-Timoshenko system with discontinuous coe cient. A Carleman inequality is obtained under the assumption of monotonicity on the beam speed. Subsequently, two applications are provided: the controllability of the control system acting on the boundary and Lipschitzian stability of the inverse problem of recovering a potential from a single measurement of the solution. In the second chapter we consider a contact problem characterized by the behavior of a two-dimensional plate whose board makes contact with a rigid obstacle. The formulation of this problem is presented by the 2-D Mindlin-Timoshenko system with boundary conditions and suitable damping terms. Concerning such system, is proved via penalty techniques, the existence of solution and that the system energy has exponential decay when the time approaches in nity. In the third chapter, the study is aimed at a nonlinear phase- eld system de ned in a real open interval. Here we present some controllability results when a single control acts, by means of Dirichlet conditions, on the temperature equation of the system on one of the endpoints of the interval. To prove the results is used the method of moments, plus a spectral study of operators associated to the system and xed point theory to deal with the nonlinearity.
