Titled “(Post-) Individualism and the Environment: perspectives on a responsible future world-view”, the proposal for this thesis is to discuss the ethics behind problems regarding the environmental challenges in a morally individualistic world. Philosophical work with these characteristics is justified by the potential ethical contributions in the face of an imminent global environmental crisis that could cause irreversible damage to nature, serious aggravation of social problems, and severely reduce the quality of life of future generations. With this scope, the problematic thus presented can be translated into two central questions: How does a morally individualistic scenario impact our ethical-environmental responsibility? Is it possible to think about philosophical work that drives the overcoming of the problems portrayed on this framework? In order to reach its scope, the present work uses as a main reference, the theory of Ethical Responsibility from Hans Jonas, especially as it is presented on his work, The Imperative of Responsibility: In Search of an Ethics for the Technological Age. The philosophical methodologies hereby employed were also developed by the same author, highlighting research principles about future ethics. Finally, after a brief presentation of the main elements of the present environmental problem, and an analysis about contemporary individualism, this thesis supports, as a contribution to coping with this dire adversity, the necessity of a moral discourse that overtakes individualism, a post-individualist discourse, and the rise of central ethical questions relevant to the future.

Silva, Wagner Francisco da 17 May 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:18:44Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Wagner Francisco da Silva.pdf: 1456885 bytes, checksum: c311ea06fbc164ad31ddb18833fe8f04 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-05-17 / This piece investigates the emergence of Environmental Ethics in environmental and psychosocial system using the method of the system. Its approach to the communicative dimension of ecological thinking and systemic. The research proposal has led to an analysis by the Environmental Ethics of metaphysics Peirceana (Ibri, 1992) the concepts of chance and continuity, finding support in the mechanism of action of empathy (Damásio, 1999 and 2004). We emphasize that our interest in this work is governed by ontological issues. Addressing some theories such as (the ontology of Mario Bunge Systemic and that of C. S. Peirce, the theory of Umwelt Jakob von Uexküll and caused a systemic theory of communication) to support the emergence of Environmental Ethics is the path chosen, as they have purpose is to investigate the nature of the systemic and complex reality of the human species. So these theories guide us to think about levels of knowledge, showing that kind of knowledge requires the Environmental Ethics. It was possible to see that the challenges posed by the object - Environmental Ethics - have significant implications on the role (and power) of the media in the implementation of such ethics / Este trabalho investiga a emergência da Ética Ambiental no sistema ambiental e psicossocial utilizando o método do sistemismo.

Ecological Humanist Mosaics: Dislocations and Relocations of the Autobiographical Self in Terry Tempest Williams's Finding Beauty in a Broken World

Gill, Sharman Tullis 01 June 2015 (has links)
Terry Tempest Williams, in Finding Beauty in a Broken World employs literary techniques that suggest dislocations and relocations of the human subject in ethical modes of being. Through narrative techniques, multidisciplinary language, and themes of conversation, gift-exchange, listening and response, Williams reflects ecological humanist mosaics, suggesting cooperative regeneration—an intersection of material beings facilitated by an ethical human imagination that listens, receives, and gives toward patterns of beauty, including, but not limited to, being human in a collective world. This eco-critical analysis of Williams’s work affirms the human being in post-humanist philosophy and repositions relational Romanticism for the 21st century.

Sustainable living for a sustainable earth : from an education for sustainable development towards an education for sustainable living

Sattmann-Frese, Werner, University of Western Sydney, College of Arts, School of Education January 2005 (has links)
This research project responds to the observation of radical ecologists and ecopsychologists that our present approaches to environmental change are widely limited to technological, behavioural and cognitive strategies, and lack a deep understanding of the complex psychological and sociocultural interrelationships that underpin human perception and behaviour. To gain a deepened understanding of our ecological crises from depth psychological, holistic, and transpersonal perspectives, a number of counsellors, psychotherapists, naturopaths, and one environmental educator were either interviewed or completed questionnaires that explored the meaning of the terms ‘environment’ and ‘sustainability’. They were also invited to express their views on environmental deterioration and what it means to them to live sustainably. The knowledge obtained from the research participants, an extensive literature review, and my professional experience as a psychotherapist, workshop facilitator and trainer, suggest that the current dominant theories and practices of environmental education, and other change practices, are limited in their effectiveness. The study proceeds with a discussion of key issues related to the ecological approach proposed in this study; and of emergent areas such as environmental education, education for sustainability, deep ecology and ecofeminism. A critique focuses particularly on the common assumption of conventional learning paradigms that deep change can be achieved without addressing emotional resistance to such change. By using the work of the Resilience Alliance, “a multidisciplinary research group that explores the dynamics of complex adaptive as a reference point it is argued that our need to compensate for our fragmented selves leads to significant resistances to changes in consciousness. The study concludes with a summary of the main findings and thoughts on possible sustainable and unsustainable futures. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Creating art or vexing nature? : ethics and the manipulation of nature, a critical study of arguments from Nature

Kirkham, Georgina Katharine January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation comprises a series of five separate papers, arranged as chapters, linked thematically and also in their conclusions. The thematic connection between the chapters is that, in each, I investigate some aspect, either historical or contemporary, of how moral limits have been, or might be, applied to the human manipulation of nature through technology. More specifically, I explore how the concept of naturalness has been, and still is, employed in ethical arguments that seek to place limits upon or defend the use of various technologies. In each chapter, I argue that arguments which appeal to nature or naturalness as a normative concept make proper sense only when understood from the perspective of virtue ethics. The conclusions of each chapter are connected, and connected to the conclusions of the dissertation as a whole: firstly, that what I call 'arguments from nature', as they are used in debates about the moral limitations on the use of technology, are defensible only from within a virtue ethics framework; secondly, that such arguments have an important, although limited, role in such debates; and, finally, that virtue ethics more broadly can inform debates about the ethics of technology and the environment. In the first two chapters, by comparing contemporary debates over the ethics of technological manipulation of nature with historical debates over the proper relationship between art and nature, I demonstrate that virtue ethics have played, and still do play, a significant role in our ethical understanding of our relationship with the non-human world. I argue that the ethical issues that arise from our relationship with the non-human world, in response to advances in technology and to problems with the environment, indicate the need for an understanding of ethics that goes further than the mere consideration of rights and utility. In chapters three and four, I argue that virtue ethical theory provides the most promising understanding of the argument from nature as it is applied in attempts to place limits on the human manipulation of nature. In the final chapter, I explore what a modern environmental or technological virtue or vice might be. I explain and defend the environmental and technological virtue of 'living in place' and, in doing so, bring together and validate the claims made in previous chapters that the appeal to human nature does have a role as a normative guide for our ethical evaluations of how we should live and, more generally, that virtue ethical theory can be of guiding and foundational significance in an overarching ethics of the environment and technology.

An environmental ethics interpretation : Sustainable development in the Swedish elementary schools’ curriculum, syllabuses and education in biology and home economics

Sjöberg, Sandra January 2014 (has links)
Today we stand before the challenge of living within our planets limits. UNESCO-UNEP argue that to achieve a sustainable development changes in thinking, attitudes and lifestyle is required. This can be accomplished with a fundamental change in education from early childhood. The aim with this study is to research how sustainable development is interpreted in the Swedish elementary school. Two school subjects have been chosen; biology and home economics. In the essay the environmental ethics anthropocentrism and ecocentrism, and how they are expressed in relations to tradition is identified.  Methods used are semi-structured interviews with teachers, document analysis of the curriculum and syllabus and thematic analysis of the interviews. The results show that in the education as well as the syllabus it is clear that anthropocentrism has larger room. This because of the focal point in both home economics and biology is common resources, humans and society. Ecocentrism in the curriculum and syllabus is shown through consideration and respect for the nature, and through students’ understanding when making choices. The tradition of the school subjects has significance for how sustainable development is interpreted in the education. Biology is nature oriented with focus on natural processes and cycles, which lead to additional ecocentric reasoning. Home economics has the focal point on the individual, the home and society, which leads to less ecocentric reasoning. All teachers that were interviewed showed both ecocentric and anthropocentric reasoning. The teachers’ opinions can find way in to the education, which here is considered to the possibility of more room for ecocentrism in home economics.
