Multimodal Framing: How Multimodal Elements Influence Framing Effects in the Debates of Plastic Pollution in the Bottled Water IndustryYulong Hu (8688855) 16 April 2020 (has links)
Environmental issues have been described as one of society’s wicked problems. In contrast to widespread technological responses to environmental issues, I spotlight social aspects as chief barriers to productive change. I posit that socially constructed frames can influence people’s perspectives, opinions, and behaviors regarding environmental issues. In this project, I explored organizational work and framing processes as a means to bridge the chasm between technological and social approaches to environmental issues. To date, researchers using framing theory have narrowed their focus to testing the effectiveness of different frames. By doing so, however, researchers remain limited to discursive explanations regarding how frames are constructed at a micro level. In contrast, I adopted a multimodal approach that accounts for both discursive and non-discursive modalities to investigate how organizations deploy visual, material, and textual approaches to shape environmental meaning through framing processes. Specifically, I focused on organizational campaigns to construct meaning around the contentious issue of bottled water. I adopted a qualitative approach, using a multimodal analysis, to explore advertisements and campaigns used by bottled water companies and environmental activist groups to shape perspectives, opinions and behaviors of plastic containers and bottled water usage. I found that visual, material, and textual modalities can be used as value-neutral tools to help stakeholders construct different frames and shape the public’s opinion of bottled water. Different multimodal elements serve different functions in constructing different frames. I also identified particular barriers for the framing construction process.

Přírodní svět jako svět mnoha tváří / Natural World as a World of Many FacesNováková, Iva January 2014 (has links)
The main goal of this Diploma thesis was a description of fact which way people understand the nature and identify main factors and their influence on construction of natural picture in contemporary society. I managed to approach the attitude to environmental issues and therefore I used the comparison of two main groups who are living in this locality and concretely group of resident people and crofter's group. For this research it was chosen the place Lipka and Michlova Huť such a place where are living this two main groups of people together and where are some rules about protected areas of Sumava. I observe the difference of these two groups in the natural picture construction and environmental issues. Key words: nature, factors, natural picture construction, environmental issues

Teaching data literacy through gamesZackrisson, Matilda January 2022 (has links)
Data literacy is an increasingly important skill to possess due to the large amounts of information available to us. This thesis explores the teaching of data literacy through a learning game. It revolves around the creation of a prototype for a learning game teaching data literacy in the domain of environ- mental issues. The prototype is largely based on a similar game teaching data literacy called Dataville. However, the narrative of the new game is based on another game as well as inspired by a real-world example of green washing. To test the concept of the new prototype, usability testing is conducted. Focus is on the experience of the game. The usability testing showed that it was mostly appreciated among the target group. However, changes to the navigation, font size and buttons need to be made. The prototype also needs more instructions in the form of "pick the right answer". Furthermore, it is also in need of explanations on how to read tables and diagrams for those students who have not yet learnt it or do not remember how to.

Enviromental Discourse and Government Framing : a Comparative Study about the portrayal of Environmental issues by governmental actors in Poland and SwedenGrafström, Odd January 2024 (has links)
This is a qualitative content analysis that explores the presence of government framing in political communications regarding environmental issues by governmental actors in Sweden and Poland. By analyzing policy documents, press releases, and equivalent content spanning recent years, the study aims to identify instances of "emphasis framing" deployed by official governmental entities. The findings of the study identify distinct patterns in framing strategies between the two nations. Some of the key areas that shape the environmental narratives of both nations include Ambition, Just Transition, Economic Concerns, and Equality. However, the framing of these areas differs between the nations communications. Poland tends to center its communication on the challenges associated with climate change and energy transition, emphasizing strategies to mitigate adverse effects. In contrast, Sweden consistently accentuates the positive aspects of energy transition, positioning itself as a global leader in climate-friendly solutions.

Many human activities cause environmental issues that can result in irreversible and serious consequencesfor all living things. Cognitive, emotional and economic barriers constitute a hotbed for environmentalskepticism and denial. In this study, the focus is on the degree to which Swedish men and women areskeptical or in denial in relation to environmental issues. Other studies concerning this show that men aresomewhat more skeptical and deny somewhat more in relation to environmental issues than women. Themethods used in this study is a questionnaire and additional semi-structured interviews. The overall resultconfirms by and large the results of the other studies concerning this and shows that men are somewhat morelikely than women to deny and to be skeptical in relation to environmental issues.

Citizen attitudes towards the environment and association with perceived threats to the countryside: Evidence from countries in five European biogeographic zonesStewart-Knox, Barbara, Bunting, B.P., Jin, S., Tindale, S., Vicario-Modroño, V., Miskolci, S., Ojo, M., Sanchez-Zamora, P., Gallardo-Cobos, R., Newell-Price, P., Sonnovelt, M., Hunter, E., Frewer, L.J. 10 October 2024 (has links)
Yes / Citizens play a crucial role in attaining the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs). There is growing awareness of the importance of understanding citizen perspectives on environmental issues, in relation to developing and maintaining sustainable lifestyles, and in addressing perceived threats to protection and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity. This analysis sought to understand people’s attitudes towards environmental conservation, how they relate to perceived threats to the countryside, and to determine how attitudes and perceived threats vary demographically and between countries. A survey was administered to citizens (quota sampled on age, gender, education, and split between rural and urban residency) across five countries representative of differing biogeographical regions (N = 3,190): Czech Republic (n = 649) (Continental); Spain (Mediterranean) (n = 623); Sweden (Boreal) (n = 645); Switzerland (Alpine) (n = 641); United Kingdom (UK) (Atlantic) (n = 632). Attitudes were measured using the Environmental Attitudes Inventory (EAI-24) on 2 factors (utilization; preservation) and perceived threat to the countryside on 1-factor (15 items). Multigroup regression analysis indicated that preservationist attitudes were associated with greater perceived threat to the countryside in all five countries. Higher perceived threat was associated with activities linked to environmental degradation, socio-economic uncertainty and risks in agri-food supply chains in all countries. The “bad behaviour of visitors” was the greatest perceived threat in the Czech Republic, Switzerland and the UK, while “lack of young farmers taking over farming” was the greatest perceived threat in Spain and Sweden. To promote pro-environmental attitudes and obtain greater public support for policies and interventions targeting environmental conservation, communication about environmental threats is needed, together with threat mitigation measures. Raising peoples’ awareness of threats to the countryside through targeted communications could promote pro-environment attitudes and potentially result in pro-environmental behaviours. / The SUPER-G project (Grant Agreement No.: 774124) has received funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme.

以虛擬代言人創作環境議題平面廣告(以迪士尼為例) / A Creation of Environmental Issues Print Ads with Spokes-Characters--The Case of Disney郭紹靖, Quek, Shao Chin Unknown Date (has links)
There is no denying that human activities have caused environmental issues. However, living an urban life have made people unware of such environmental issues as the garbage mountains/oceans, the hunger from food shortage, and the despair of dry seasons, etc. Therefore they have no sense of crisis about these issues. People heard of those terms but they still bury their heads in the sand. Different from political, religious or social issues, environmental issues are more like serious ethical issues, which allow none to either choose a stance or stay neutral. Those who have depleted the natural resources are responsible to protect the environment.
Baudrillard, a French sociologist and a philosopher, said: “we were made aware of”. To the people who care about environment, helping more people understand the severity of environmental issues becomes the most important thing. Therefore, a lot of celebrities who are aware of the importance of environmental protection spare no effort to promote environmental issues, even engaging themselves in the environmental protection industry. They have become influential spokespersons of the environment.
However, we’ve rarely seen the cases of fictional characters being used in the environment endorsement. So the idea of combining environmental issues with spokes-characters is born. These Print Ads creations will use Disney’s characters to achieve the effect of spokespersons. The exhibition have shown the creation successfully attracted audience attention, affecting both their attitudes and behaviors to environmental issues. The results have reached the effect of spokespersons and purpose of the creation.

Os parques lineares na dinâmica da produção do espaço urbano na periferia - o caso do Parque Linear do Córrego do Rio Verde em Itaquera - São Paulo / The Linear Parks in the dynamics of production of urban space in the periphery: the case of Linear Park Córrego do Rio Verde in Itaquera - São PauloMigliacci, Marcella Carmona Wahl Rontani 01 September 2016 (has links)
The linear parks in São Paulo are mostly located in the city peripheries and they are inserted in the dynamics of production of urban space. This study attempts to make environmental and social analysis of the implementation implications and planning of linear parks, from the analysis of the production of space, especially in the Linear Park Córrego do Rio Verde, located in Itaquera, periphery of Sao Paulo. In this sense surveys were conducted based on theoretical framework, public data, and field observations. The analysis shows that there is a huge challenge to be faced in the relationship between environmental and social issues, because in most cases are seen as separate problems without that evidence that are intrinsically correlated.
