Manuel Bandeira nas cartas e nas crônicas: percurso literário e arte poética / Manuel Bandeira in the letters and in the chronics: literary trajectory and poetic art

Rosângela Batista Rangel 31 March 2014 (has links)
Ao percorremos uma parte significativa da prosa de Manuel Bandeira, estabelecemos o cotejo com o seu texto memorialístico Itinerário de Pasárgada, rastreando, nessas fontes, os escritos que denunciam o seu posicionamento em relação às inovações da arte moderna / This work is a reflective exercise on the literary trajectory and the poetic art of Manuel Carneiro de Souza Bandeira Filho in the 20s and the 30s. By reading his correspondence with Mário Raul de Morais Andrade, and his writings for the press, we analyze the multiple traits displayed by this important poet from Pernambuco and we seek to show general features of his conception of life and poetry. Therefore, in this dissertation, the epistolary genre and the chronic are considered notable objects of studying for the Brazilian literature. The correspondence with Andrade acquires importance in the intellectual production of Manuel Bandeira, because it allows a greater understanding of the poet from his autobiographic writing, as it allows to observe the writers concern about the memory of Brazilian culture. Likewise, chronic becomes important because it brings the chroniclers witness of the surrounding time. When we go through a significant part of Manuel Bandeiras narrative, we set the comparison with his memorialistic text Itinerário de Pasárgada, by tracking, in these sources, the writings that expose his positioning in relation to the innovations of modern art

To write, intransitive verb: rise and fall of an epistolary mastery amongst Brazilian writers

Flavio Tito Cundari da Rocha Santos 07 October 2015 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the apprenticeship of forty-two young Brazilian writers through letters exchanged with the writers Machado de Assis and Mário de Andrade, which, together compose a file of 1444 documents covering over eighty-two years of epistolary communication. Drawing on the theoretical contributions of Michel Foucault and others poststructuralist thinkers, we take the education transmitted through the missives as an occasion for an experience that not only organizes the writing of beginners according to specific literary criteria, but also incites certain forms of subjectivity relating to an alleged literary life. Considering this, we confront different lines of epistolographical studies, such as genetic criticism, and those who deal with self writing, in order to establish a procedure focused not on the creative process the result of the analytical pair author/work but on practices that form the relationship between he who writes and the instituting precepts of literary writing, as it is here understood. The analysis of the epistolary material was carried out based on four themes: 1) the relationship between literary mastery and criticism; 2) the importance of literary groups for the formation of young writers; 3) the struggle of novice writers with an ideal vision of life as a writer; 4) the debates around the notions of inspiration and spontaneity in writing. Thus, we were able to portray a picture that differentiates the eighteenth-century mastery, directed primarily at the development of a technique and a specific literary aesthetics, and a nineteenth-century mastery, for which the technical and aesthetic development of the disciples was not sufficient for their literary basis, without the subjective transformation of the writer. Furthermore, we defined the role of groups in establishing common links among peers and the consequent division between literary and non-literary writers, as well as the constitution, in the twentieth century, of an ethical relationship to writing guided by the continuous criticism, giving way to intransitive writing, beyond the time of the work itself. Following this route, we were able to connect the collapse of the educational gesture, where the literary master is in charge and vested in the care of the other, to the empowerment of a brooding character in the writing process, now practiced in terms of a never ending uplifting narrative of the self, resulting not only in the removal of the master role, but also in the perpetuation of a lifelong education.

Leonardo Gonçalves Silva 10 August 2018 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: The Society of Jesus from its inception has influenced the most diverse spheres of society, including the informational field. One of the ways of exercising such influence was through the letters written by the religious. OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyze the first prescriptions for the epistolary writing of the Society of Jesus, investigating their contents and comparing them with each other. METHOD: Literature review on the historical-informational context of the sixteenth century, more specifically on the first decades of print expansion and epistolography in the period, focusing on manuals for writing letters; the review sought to emphasize the contributions of the Jesuits in the context. RESULTS: The survey found three epistolary norms in the first years of the Society: the Rules (1547), some articles of the Constitutions (1558) on the subject and the Formula scribendi (1565), whose translation into Portuguese was made exclusively for this work. Their analysis showed that the Society developed rigid norms for the production and circulation of letters, but that made possible the creation of a true network of epistolary information throughout the world. CONCLUSIONS: The Jesuits played a relevant role in the informational context of the sixteenth century, especially through their letters. By determining issues such as authors, recipients, themes of the letters and their deadlines, the rules of letters were of essential importance for the maintenance of this information network.

The pastoral letter in early Christianity up to the early fifth century C.E.

Kim, Joohan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims to trace a Christian letter tradition, i.e. the pastoral letter type, during the first five centuries of this era. With this in mind I outlined the problem statements, goals, theoretical points of departure, research questions, hypotheses, methodologies and structures in Chapter I of the dissertation. I surveyed the history of modern studies on Greco-Roman epistolography in Chapter II. There I looked at how the study of Christian letters was related to Greco-Roman epistolography and what it contributed to the history of modern study on Greco-Roman epistolography. In the process I also focused on the study of the Christian letter tradition that flourished especially during the middle of the twentieth century. I pointed out some weaknesses in the preceding studies, such as limiting the analysis of letters to certain periods, failure to consider generic features and lack of attention to psychagogical intention. At the end of the chapter I concluded by pointing out what still remains to be done, such as considering a broader range of sources and periods, and paying more attention to how the pastoral letter continued to function during the first five centuries of our era. On the basis of the preceding survey I then focused in Chapter III on the generic features of Greco- Roman hortatory letters and their psychagogical functions to provide the background of a broader hortatory tradition for explaining the generic features and functions of the earliest Christian letters, i.e. the letters in the NT. From this research I concluded that Greco-Roman hortatory letters followed the pattern of common Greco-Roman letters in terms of structural and formal features. However, they not only focused on the guidance or education of the recipients in terms of function, but for effective persuasion the authors also employed various rhetorical devices which are often found in the other genres of hortatory works. In Chapter IV I analysed the letters in the NT in order to show that these letters resonate with the hortatory letters that were composed for psychagogy (viz. pastoral care). Firstly, I focused on the analysis of Paul’s first letter, i.e. 1 Thessalonians, to show that the author of the first Christian letter was as pastor above all concerned with pastoral care, and for effective pastoral care he borrowed from the Greco-Roman hortatory letter tradition. From this analysis I concluded that 1 Thessalonians can be located in the hortatory letter tradition, but has its own distinct character differing from common hortatory letters. These features must have resulted from Paul’s efforts to take care of his believers in the Christian faith. In the remainder of this chapter I analysed the rest of the letters in the NT, considering the outcome of the analysis of 1 Thessalonians together with the broader hortatory tradition. I found that the rest of the letters in the NT could be classed as hortatory letters for the purpose of psychagogy, i.e. pastoral letters, in terms of both their structural and formal features, and of their composition, purpose and function. In Chapter V I analysed a number of selected pastoral letters from early Christian authors. Firstly, I surveyed the history of Christian letters and their authors to provide a general background for this chapter. From these authors and their letters, I chose sixteen pastoral letters from fifteen Christian leaders based on stated criteria, and analysed them, considering both the earliest Christian pastoral letters (viz. the letters in the NT) and the broader Greco-Roman hortatory letter tradition. As a result of this analysis I found that these selected letters had features in common with the earliest Christian pastoral letters, especially in terms of their purpose and function, as well as distinctly Christian characteristics. I then compared the outcome of this analysis with selected letters from non-pastoral Christian letter types (viz. the festal or paschal letter type, the synodic letter type, the papal letter type and the “essay in letter form”). I found that, though the selected pastoral letters and nonpastoral letters had some literary features in common, such as structure and form, and employed rhetorical devices, they nevertheless differed in terms of purposes and function.

Epistolae duorum amantium - překlad a komentář souboru korespondence připisované Abélardovi a Heloise s úvodní studií / Epistolae duorum amantium - translation and commentary of the corpus of correspondence attributed to Abelard and Heloise with an introductory essay

Daňhelová, Jana January 2013 (has links)
The topic of this dissertation is a Medieval collection of 116 love letters (and fragments thereof), composed in all likelihood in the 12th century and commonly known today as "Epistulae duorum amantium". The only extant copy, penned by the Librarian of Clairvaux Abbey, comes from the latter half of the 15th century. The manuscript was discovered no sooner than in the 1970s and has been a subject of many questions ever since: It is not clear who the author of the original is or if the scribe copied a collection of genuine intimate correspondence or a work of rhetorical fiction (of the "ars dictaminis" genre). Nevertheless, certain aspects of the narrative and the relationship between the two lovers as depicted in the texts make some contemporary Medieval scholars believe that the collection might be an authentic record of the correspondence between the influential French theologian Abélard and his student Heloïse, written during the period of their mutual intensive romantic attachment. The aim of this dissertation is to present a complete Czech translation of the collection, accompanied by commentary and, using relevant works of secondary literature, to assess the current stage of research regarding the authenticity of the correspondence and its authorship.

A correspondência entre São Jerônimo e Santo Agostinho: tradução e estudo (edição bilíngue) / The correspondence between Saint Jerome and Saint Augustine: ranslation and study

Guarnieri, Felipe de Medeiros 18 December 2015 (has links)
This dissertation comprehends the translation, analysis, and critical annotation of the letters that compose the correspondence of Aurelius Augustine (Thagast, modern day Souk Ahras, 354 - Hippo Regius, modern day Annaba, 430/431), presbyter and then bishop of Hippo, with Eusebius Jerome (Stridon, modern day Ljubliana, 331 - Bethlehem, 419/420), a monk then living in Bethlehem, and which were changed between the years of ca. 394/395 and 419. This dissertation also comprehends an introductory study, in two parts, of the correspondence: first, an interpretation of elements from it in light of the Hellenistic epistolary genre, according to its theory and practice, as described both by Greek and Roman, ancient and christian writers, and by contemporary scholars; afterwards, a historical analysis of the text, supported by studies of the correspondence and modern historiographic scholarship, with emphasis on biographies of our authors, who lived in an age marked by important causes to the development of Latin Patristics, such as the correct interpretation and translation of the Holy Scripture, the battle against heresies, and most importantly the political and social role played by the Church, in the search for a unified, catholic and orthodox christian doctrine during Late Antiquity.

Amizade \"carteadeira\": o diálogo epistolar de Mário de Andrade com o Grupo Verde de Cataguases / Friendship by correspondence: epistolary dialogue between Mário de Andrade and Grupo Verde de Cataguases

Menezes, Ana Lúcia Guimarães Richa Lourega de 12 August 2013 (has links)
This thesis aimed to collect and study the correspondence between the writer Mário de Andrade (1893-1945) and Ascânio Lopes (1906-1929), Camilo Soares (1909-1982), Enrique de Resende (1899-1973), Francisco Inácio Peixoto (1909-1986), Guilhermino Cesar (1908- 1993) and Rosário Fusco (1910-1977), the writers related to Verde (Green), modernist magazine that was edited by Grupo Verde de Cataguases (Green Group from Cataguases), between 1927 and 1929. In order to restore the peculiarities of the literary and intellectual sociability in the 1920s, this research compiled unpublished epistolary documents and material dispersed in public and private archives. Guided by epistolary study and textual criticism principles, it has been done a trustworthy transcription, a chronological ordering and an exhaustive annotation of the letters. These procedures resulted in a selection of 122 letters that compose the first section of this thesis. Considering the uniqueness of the selected letters, it was able to glimpse the possibility of a new perspective regarding the study of the Grupo Verde de Cataguases. Therefore, the academic work which follows the correspondence was divided into three topics: (a) the introduction of the seven correspondents; (b) the analyse of the extension to which these documents will facilitate the reconstruction of Grupo Verdes trajectory; and (c) the discussion of the letters contents through a critical approach considering the selected letters as elements that allow the reassessment of these writers organization as an avant-garde group, which favor the observation of their epistolary relationships with Mário de Andrade and that help to clarify the Grupo Verde participation in the Brazilian Modernist Movement.
