Aproximações entre biologia, biopolítica e bioarte: um ensaio sobre a biocontemporaneidade / Approximations among biology, biopolitics and bioart: an essay on biocontemporaneity.

Nogueira, Luciana Valeria 04 September 2009 (has links)
This paper aims at reflecting on some implications around the contemporary biological discourse through the analysis of how some concepts in the field of biological sciences particularly species and genes spread through the social body, associating with certain modes of subjectivation. The guiding hypothesis of the present study is that the non-explicitation of the fragility of both concepts follows the demand for control and submission, especially as far as the development and usage of biotechnologies are concerned. Thus, there is at the same time production of new forms of life and production of specific processes of subjectivation. Considering the premise that a new man is being forged by the biotechnologies, it is argued that the latter have succeeded in gaining some legitimacy in the collective imaginary, especially because such concepts are solidary with the conversion of biological identity into bioidentity. According to Foucault, if the disciplines used to point toward the human-body, nowadays, under biopolitics they have moved into focusing on the human-species. The life-regulating mechanisms have become part of the power-knowledge relations focusing on the manipulation of vital phenomena. Thus, there seems to be a direct connection between the biopolitical spectrum and the concepts of species and genes. One can conclude, therefore, that the unfolding of this connection will lead into the scope of biosociablity and bioidentity. By taking some empirical work from the cinema and the plastic arts, this research proposes a singular analytical approach to the relations among biology, biopolitics and bioart, under a perspective which contemplates an esthetics of the existence based on the ethics of friendship. In the building of this approach, Michel Foucault\"s thought played a fundamental role, followed by Gilles Deleuze\'s and Félix Guattari\'s philosophies.

Influência de extrações de pré-molares na estética facial em longo prazo / Influence of premolar extractions on facial aesthetics in the long term

Junqueira, Cintia Helena Zingaretti 01 February 2013 (has links)
The assumption that extraction treatment can impair the facial profile with excessive retrusion has discouraged this treatment protocol. This study aimed to assess whether the nonextraction, extraction of two maxillary premolars and extraction of four premolars treatment protocols of Class II Division 1 are different regarding facial esthetics in the long-term. Frontal and lateral photographs of 63 patients, treated at least eight years ago, that initially presented complete Class II division 1 malocclusion, were divided into 3 groups as following: XP0 (non-extraction, n=20; 30,77 years, 15,63 years post-treatment), XP2 (2-maxillary premolar extractions, n=25; 30,99 years, 15,68 years post-treatment) and G3 (4-premolar extractions, n=18; 32,80 years of age, 18,01 years post-treatment). All groups were matched by gender, age, posttreatment time, final profile and occlusal outcomes (Objective Grading System Index), final and long-term overjets. Laypersons and orthodontists evaluated frontal and lateral photographs of the individuals, assigning scores from 1 to 10 to each ones attractiveness and opining about their apparent ages. Cephalometric soft tissue measures were obtained from the lateral photographs by the software Dolphin Imaging 11.5. Two-way Analysis of Variance revealed that both attractiveness and apparent age were not affected by treatment protocols, but by the type of evaluator. Laymen were slightly more critical then orthodontists. Analysis of covariance revealed that the age of the raters did not affect their opinions, but the genre did, as long as women assigned higher grades than did men. Analysis of variance showed no statistically significant differences between the three groups, except for the facial pattern, which was slightly larger in XP4. The Pearson correlation test revealed that none of the soft-tissue measures evaluated had influence on the facial attractiveness scores assigned to the sample. Therefore, it was concluded that treatment of complete Class II division 1 malocclusion with and without extractions had similar facial attractiveness in the long-term.

This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the evaluation of postgraduate students of orthodontics (PO), postgraduate students of endodontics (PE), and laypersons (PL) on the level of facial attractiveness, with regard to the lower facial third and indications for treatment of deformities. We used a profile view photograph of the lower facial third of one male and one female White Brazilian, both with Angle Class I occlusion and Capelozza Pattern I face. Twenty-two images of the lower facial third were then digitally changed by 2.5 mm increments, in a total of 5.0 mm per image. We changed the upper and lower lips. Movements were anteroposterior only. The images were evaluated through a questionnaire by 90 participants. PO and PE groups evaluated the Class III profile as the least pleasant for both male and female images. PL group rated the male Class III profile and the female protusive jaws as the least aesthetically pleasant ones. PO, PE and PL goups rated the female Class I profile as the most pleasant. PO group rated the male Class I profile as the most pleasant and PE and PL groups rated the male Class II profile as the most aesthetically pleasant. PO, PE and PL groups were equally consistent regarding the level of attractiveness and the indication for treatment of deformities. PL group presented higher number of profiles with significant differences (P<0.05) in the level of facial attractiveness as discrepancy increases.

Reason and affectivity: the Maxakali iconography recording life and brighten with colours the lay.

Luciane Monteiro Oliveira 25 April 2006 (has links)
This present thesis aims to introduce the Maxakali iconography as life\'s expression and of the universe cosmological conception. The signs of this expression are especially the paper drawings made by the individuals pertained to the group without any discrimination of age, sex or sociocosmical status. The purpose is to demonstrate through iconography how the Maxakali people perceive the world through the sensorial perception of their own bodies and how they build up alterative relations in the intercession of distinct cosmological conceptions. This movement of ideas is very important to dialogize when differences are shown and tension is amplified chiefly when we come up to discussions and practices of public policies. The methodology used in the research is the symbolical mitohermeneutics of antropological characteristics, wich is originally based in a carefully reflection and in the practice of knowledge wich propriciates to record the ways through which the researcher in the insertion of the context of his investigation.

Defining the Scope of Practice for Nurse Practitioners in MIAM

Lucero, Samantha 01 January 2017 (has links)
Minimally invasive aesthetic medicine (MIAM) is a relatively new field, which lacks a clearly defined scope of practice. The purpose of this project was to clarify the scope of practice for nurse practitioners in MIAM in California. Without a clearly defined scope of practice, nurse practitioners are unable to practice to the full extent of their license which causes them to be underutilized and face liability issues. This project sought to answer the question: What is the scope of practice of the nurse practitioner in MIAM in the state of California? The model of professional nursing practice regulation was the model used to guide this project. Sources of evidence included case law that has emerged since 1983; reviewing documents from 3 state boards of nursing; and a survey of nurse practitioners who practice in the field of MIAM. The evidence was analyzed noting themes while determining what the legal backbone is for nurse practitioner's scope of practice in California. This project found that nurse practitioners in this field keep up to date in their knowledge, educate their patients, utilize methods to maintain competency, feel support in their environment, assess and refer to others when appropriate, and teach both staff and patients evidence-based practices. It also found that standardized procedures are the legal backbone to understanding the scope of practice in California. A scope of practice was developed based on the findings of this project which was then reviewed by an expert. It is recommended that nurse practitioners utilize their resources to obtain and maintain knowledge as well as learn what the standardized procedures are in their facility. The implications for clarifying the scope of practice will serve this population to fully utilize their capabilities and practice safely, as well as help to develop this relatively new field.

January 2019 (has links)
No OQLQ, a dimensão "estética facial" representou 81,13% ... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The success of the treatment of dentofacial deformities does not depend on the reestablishment of the masticatory, phonetic and aesthetic functions; the individual motivations, perceptions and expectations of each patient should also be considered at the time of planning, guaranteeing an improvement in their quality of life. To do this, specific instruments must be used that are sensitive to measure the impact of the patient's quality of life. Thus, the purpose of this study was to verify the quality of life in patients who sought care at the Hospital das Clínicas and who presented with dentofacial deformities with indication of orthognathic surgery, as well as delineate the sociodemographic profile and detect factors that may alter the quality of life, whose developments were divided into two chapters. The first chapter deals with a cross-sectional study of 106 patients with Class II and III dentofacial deformities, indicated for orthognathic surgery. Participants answered the OHIP-14 and OQLQ questionnaires. The chi-square test or Fisher's test was used to verify the association between impact and sociodemographic variables. In the OHIP-14 questionnaire, the dimension "psychological incapacity"(64.15%) presenteda higher prevalence of impact. It was found that the marital status of the interviewees had a statistically significant effect on the impact of quality of life (p = 0.0119). In OQLQ, the "facial aesthetic"dimension represented 81.13% in the prevalence ofimpact on qua... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

In Search of the Artist: The Influences of Commercial Interest on an Art School - A Narrative Analysis

Sette, Michael Leonard 09 June 2014 (has links)
The current study will investigate how identities and roles of the artist converge with competing identities and roles fostered at the institutional level within an art college as revealed through the marketing literature that they produce to attract students and business partnerships. The sociological focus for this proposal is the tension between art as a creative expressive endeavor and art as a commodity that has entered into social transactions unintended by the original expression of the artist. The researcher documents and describes (via narrative analysis) how an art school negotiates competing relationships between the pressures to teach and promote art for the sake of aesthetic and personal value (autonomy) versus the pressure to teach and promote art for school subsidized market values. The data for the current study will come from the Ringling College of Art and Design website and brochures from the school that advertise the educational opportunities available to prospective students. The analyses will focus on the particular language, cultural codes, and stories that the school uses to describe the 1) identity and purpose of the institution, 2) types of students (ideal students) they are looking for to attend the school, 3) artistic opportunities open to students, 4) types of collaborations with organizations/businesses outside of the institution, and 5) goals, and production/consumption of art.

The Terror of Possibility: A Re-evaluation and Reconception of the Sublime Aesthetic

Fawver, Kurt 01 January 2013 (has links)
While the sublime aesthetic has a long and complex critical history, it is nonetheless a schizophrenic concept. Indeed, in the over two thousand years since the sublime became a subject of learned inquiry, it has not been resolved into any one concrete idea, but has become, rather, an expansive tapestry of disparate if interconnected theoretical threads from which aestheticians may pick and choose to define what they mean by the term "sublime." Kant postulates one sort of sublime, Burke another, and Lyotard, Zizek, and the Romantics still others. In this way, the contemporary sublime aesthetic is, in essence, an ever-extending discourse of recombinatory effort. The goal of this dissertation is to stitch together the competing conceptual threads that constitute the contemporary definition of the sublime aesthetic and to uncover the foundational core from which all those ideas spring. Through analysis and deconstruction of several major theories on the sublime as well as through critical evaluation of a host of literary and cinematic texts (for example Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Don Delillo's White Noise), this dissertation contends that the deepest substratum of the sublime aesthetic lies in dynamism and possibility. Indeed, both art objects and philosophical rationale show that the sublime aesthetic is, at base, the recognition of the entire sphere of the possible and its necessarily constitutive threatening dynamism in a physically or ideologically destructive object or act of vast size, power, or mystery. This dissertation argues that a theory of the sublime as possibility that entails uncontrollable dynamism helps to further clarify - if not fully explicate - the aesthetic and resolves the tension and incompatibility between preexisting ideas on the subject. Therefore, as a new theory of the sublime aesthetic, this dissertation is, at very least, a novel formulation of an ancient and undervalued concept in art and critical theory and, at best, a work that unearths the deepest, heretofore unrecognized, layers of an aesthetic experience central to human perception.

Negatyvizmo estetika grupės "Svetimi" kūryboje / The esthetics of the negativism in the creative works of the groups „Outlandish“

Pliskaitienė, Kristina 17 August 2009 (has links)
Tad daugiausia naudojamas analitinis interpretacinis metodas. / The object of the master’s work deals with the texts of five authors Dainiaus Dirgėla, Valdas Gedgaudas, Evaldas Ignatavičius, Alvydas Šlepikas, Donatas Valavčiauskas published in the almanac “Outlanders” as well as the posterior creative works of poet Valdas Gedgaudas where novel topics marking the esthetics of negativism although not fixed in the selection are noticeable. The group declares a novel different existential and valuable position as well as expresses complete dissociation from the earlier Lithuanian creative literature traditions at the same time legalizing a modern conception of the human and the world. Demythologization, destruction along with traditions are characteristic to the texts as well as the topic of death is approached using the elements of the carnival. The tendency of negativism is especially noticeable in the almanac although it is not supposed to be just a motive or feature while the esthetics of negativism tends to dominate transforming into the category of intellection. “Outlanders” signifies the turning point of the process of the Lithuanian poetry as well as its incoming era predicating their creative conception on the specific object of the manifestos of hilarious foreignness as a modern active ambitious different strategy of position. The work methods were selected according to its objectives which include discussing the most dramatic tendencies of negativism reflected by the almanac, revealing conception of... [to full text]
