Approaching the Examiner's Chair: Chronicling the Experiences of Piano Examiner Apprentices for the Royal Conservatory of Music

Dumlavwalla, Diana Teresa 21 November 2011 (has links)
Examinations administered by the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) play a major role in the musical education of many individuals across Canada. The evaluative process needs to be a constructive one in order to ensure its positive impact on students’ musical education. Examiners who are confident and comfortable in their roles as assessors are more likely to provide this ideal environment for the students. Individuals at the dawn of their examining careers are prone to lower confidence and comfort levels due to their inexperience. Yet all music students deserve an optimal examination situation, even from new examiners. Ensuring that an examiner receives proper training will help to increase their confidence and comfort levels while assessing students. This study examined the elements of an examiner’s education, experience and preparation which contributed to higher confidence and comfort levels as they participated in the RCM evaluative process. Ten individuals participated in surveys and interviews. Seven were recent apprentices of the examiner training program and three were senior examiners. Their experiences and insights given in a narrative form shed light on which elements of their background and training benefited them as examiners. According to the participants, varied and extensive pedagogical training, taking exams as students and intensive performance education gave them the most advantages during their early careers as examiners. Regarding the examiner apprenticeship program, participants felt that they would have benefited from more practical experience during the early classroom seminar, additional opportunities to observe students at varying performing levels and more time for discussion with their mentors. These recommendations for background preparation and enhanced training are intended to give examiners greater confidence in their evaluative roles early in their careers, enabling them to provide constructive and effective assessments for students and their teachers.

Automated Verification of Exam, Cash, aa Reputation, and Routing Protocols / Vérification automatique de protocoles d'examen, de monnaie, de réputation, et de routage

Kassem, Ali 18 September 2015 (has links)
Security is a crucial requirement in the applications based on information and communication technology, especially when an open network such as the Internet is used.To ensure security in such applications cryptographic protocols have been used. However, the design of security protocols is notoriously difficult and error-prone.Several flaws have been found on protocols that are claimed secure.Hence, cryptographic protocols must be verified before they are used. One approach to verify cryptographic protocols is the use of formal methods, which have achieved many results in recent years.Formal methods concern on analysis of protocol specifications modeled using, e.g., dedicated logics, or process algebras.Formal methods can find flaws or prove that a protocol is secure under ``perfect cryptographic assumption" with respect to given security properties. However, they abstract away from implementation errors and side-channel attacks. In order to detect such errors and attacks runtime verification can be used to analyze systems or protocols executions. Moreover, runtime verification can help in the cases where formal procedures have exponential time or suffer from termination problems. In this thesis we contribute to cryptographic protocols verification with an emphasis on formal verification and automation.Firstly, we study exam protocols. We propose formal definitions for several authentication and privacy propertiesin the Applied Pi-Calculus. We also provide an abstract definitions of verifiability properties. We analyze all these properties automatically using ProVerif on multiple case studies, and identify several flaws. Moreover, we propose several monitors to check exam requirements at runtime. These monitors are validated by analyzing a real exam executions using MARQ Java based tool.Secondly, we propose a formal framework to verify the security properties of non-transferable electronic cash protocols. We define client privacy and forgery related properties.Again, we illustrate our model by analyzing three case studies using ProVerif, and confirm several known attacks.Thirdly, we propose formal definitions of authentication, privacy, and verifiability properties of electronic reputation protocols. We discuss the proposed definitions, with the help of ProVerif, on a simple reputation protocol. Finally, we obtain a reduction result to verify route validity of ad-hoc routing protocols in presence of multiple independent attackers that do not share their knowledge.

The present work is an exploration in three directions. The first part of the doctorship thesis recovers the route followed by Educational Sociology in its tradition of studying educational inequality, both in national and international contexts. Also, it focus teaching quality as a prevalent issue in nowadays discussions about the inequality of educational opportunities. The second part explores the different pictures of high school quality in Brazil, taking as reference the existing literature on school-effect. The results of the ENEM Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (High School National Exams) of the year 2005 were analyzed, pointing out the distribution of high quality High Schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The students perceptions of teaching quality were analyzed based on their answers given to the social-economical questions when participating of the ENEM during 2005. The high rate of positive evaluations of the High Schools quality by those students suggests different criteria of evaluation from those used by the ENEM. The hypothesis was held that the students evaluations were oriented by the ideas of social-economical inclusion, opportunity and educational access. To validate the hypothesis, the history of high school expansion in Brazil was recovered, highlighting the different conceptions of quality by the different social characters. The third part is an exploration of eight different schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro, both public and private, in which students achieved high performance in the ENEM of 2005, based on interviews with their best students. The goal is to observe the existing differences in the world of the best education available.

The contribution of odontology at work for the occupational health program : verifying the buccal health condition of a Brazilian southern agroindustry

Ana Luiza de Oliveira Tauchen 11 October 2006 (has links)
Men?s historical evolution at work shows, through the provided work conditions, that they interfere with quality of buccal health of the workers and may unchain alterations in the buccal mucosa, traumas and other problems. The present study has mainly highlighted a more detailed view of this evolution, work field and concept of the Worker Health Odontology and thus allowing the delimitation of this new work field for the Surgeon Dentist. The major focus was to verify the conditions of buccal health of the workers of a Brazilian southern Agroindustry, where the results of this epidemiological study by sample showed a profile where most of the examinees were women (58.82%), with education level (52.94%) and low income (R$ 385,06), average age (28) and who had been working for about 44.8 months. In relation to the level of buccal satisfaction, 51.63% classified it as regular, saying that their last visit to the dentist was 25.51 months before, claiming lack of time and opportunity, despite most of them said they had already worked with toothache (59.47%) and sometimes had to auto medicate so as to relieve the symptoms. The CPO-D found was 16.54, with 6.00 for the component of lost teeth, emphasizing great need for the use of prosthesis (57.52%) for the upper teeth and (64.05%) for the lower teeth. It has also been noticed that there is a great need for a better periodontal health care. 79.82% showed dental calculus, which may generate gingivitis (61.44%) and high prevalence of orthodontical dysfunctions (66.01%) with severe dental misalignment and may thus be one of the generators of a great number of individuals with painful sintomatology of TMA (31.42%). At last, through this epidemiological study, we can demonstrate the indispensable contribution of the Surgeon Dentist, specialized in Odontology at work, when they are inserted in the occupational health program of a company, where they can perform specific odontological exams, in order to generate data that may signal a more effective participation by the company, in search of buccal health and thus resulting in an improvement in life quality of the workers and consequently in a more effective productive development, minimizing the complication risks and work accidents.

[en] AN EVALUATION OF 2D FILTERS FOR SPECKLE DENOISING ULTRASOUND EXAMS / [pt] UMA AVALIAÇÃO DE FILTROS 2D PARA REMOÇÃO DE RUÍDO SPECKLE EM EXAMES DE ULTRASSOM

THIAGO RIBEIRO DA MOTTA 22 March 2018 (has links)
[en] Ultrasound exams are a popular tool for image acquisition in day-to-day medicine, since it is a noninvasive, safe and cheap procedure. However, speckle noise is intrinsic to any ultrasound exam, and it is responsible for image quality degradation and for hindering its interpretation by doctors and patients alike, while also impairing the accuracy of post processing computational methods, such as classification, reconstruction, tissue characterization and segmentation, among others. Hence, smoothing or denoising methods that preserves the observed content core attributes are essential for those processes. Defined as a multiplicative noise, following non-Gaussian statistics and as strongly correlated, its solution today is still a matter of debates and research. In this work, several 2D filters that aim to smooth or remove speckle noise along with qualitative methods to evaluate their performances and means of choosing their best parameters are presented.

A Case Study Market Analysis of Acceleration Mechanisms in Florida: Dual Enrollment Positioning

Perry, Laura Melissa 01 January 2013 (has links)
This applied dissertation explored dual enrollment viability when compared to other acceleration mechanisms: (a) advanced placement, (b) advanced international certificate of education, (c) international baccalaureate, and (d) college-level examination program. This multicase, qualitative study explored the competitiveness of dual enrollment versus other acceleration mechanism using Porter’s model and the strengthsweaknessesopportunities- threats analysis as the theoretical frameworks. The study used one-on-one interviews to gather primary comparative information. Five groups were interviewed: (a) the vendors of the acceleration mechanisms, (b) state education officials, (c) district personnel, (d) high school representatives, and (e) higher education representatives. The acceleration mechanisms’ educational objectives, their positioning, and any acceleration mechanisms’ benefits to the various stakeholders were examined. Dual enrollment was compared to the other acceleration mechanisms to develop recommendations for improving the competitive positioning and viability of dual enrollment in Florida. The study found that acceleration-mechanism options were complex and dynamic programs that were highly influenced by government policies and funding. Educational entities viewed the value of acceleration mechanisms differently, especially dual enrollment. All groups agreed that acceleration mechanisms provided rigorous curriculum for high school students to prepare for college. However, educational entities first wanted to protect their own interests and funding. In terms of dual enrollment, financial considerations remained a substantial motivation for the program. The study showed that all acceleration mechanisms offered benefits to participating students. However, the multifaceted and ever-changing nature of acceleration mechanisms provided no clear advantages or benefits for dual enrollment versus other acceleration mechanisms. Several recommendations are made that addressed concerns about the longterm value of dual enrollment for Florida institutions and students.

DIOGO VINICIUS ROSAS MARINHO 16 December 2020 (has links)
[en] This work makes a basic introduction to the themes Markov Chains and Leontief Matrix aiming to show practical applications of linear systems and matrices with a focus on its application in Brazilian High School. To achieve this goal, the theoretical bases necessary for the student to be able to understand and solve problems with these themes has been revised. In addition, we present a proposal to introduce linear algebra with analytical geometry, as well as the way of taking linear algebra in military tests in Brazil. With the use of videos and online tools and creating friendlier paths on such a theoretical theme, it is demonstrated how Youtube can be a powerful tool in visualizing abstract problems involving linear algebra.
