Travessias do beco: a educação pelas quebradas / Crossings of the alley: education through the gullies

Torres, Fabiano Ramos 14 October 2016 (has links)
This essay proposes the rolê (jaunt, ramble, wandering) through the peripheries as a thought experiment. Peripheries of the city, of the school, of desire and of knowledge. Perceived as a practice of moving, walking around, a casual outing through the city, the rolê is the practice subject to the risks and dangers of the pathway. What has been proposed in this work is a crossing of the signs and happenings of another learning, present in the edges of the city, where the learning of survival refers to a kind of pedagogy of cruelty, which relates the suffering to the joy in the resistance of everyday inventions. In this crossing, the experience of the rolê also unfolds within the school, considering that the school has its alleys and lanes, its peripheries from where the remainders, the leftovers, what was left aside, the astray, the weird, the strange, the nonsense, the illogical, the monster and the pedagogical aberration emerge. Thus, the alleys crossing appears as an allegory of survival and is understood as the via periculosa (perilous road) in which the body is convoked to explore its potencies. For the purpose of this research, listening devices have been elaborated to give ear to the happening and to the aberrant production which is comprehended as infamous materials and matters, elements that were despised whether in the citys or the schools daily life. Therefore, the signs and happenings present in the life of peripheral youngsters and teenagers, such as the massive protests of June 2013, the rolezinho, the flow of Brazilian funk and the occupations of public schools, as well as the graffiti writings inside the schools, the indistinct sound blocks, the drawings, the sentences indicate insurrect, instituting knowledges that link, agonistically, the citys peripheries and formal schooling. Consequently, the pedagogic fiction produced in the rolês thought experiment appears as a fable-making that operates on the elaboration of aberrant productions, making it possible to capture the unspeakable within the speakable, the invisible within the visible and the unthought within all this which runs us through in the alleys crossings. This enables us to listen to another story of the scholar and the urban education, understanding the relation between the insignificant, the inexplicable, the absurd and other often unbearable tensions, both to the scholar body and to the city. This productions cartography is a cartography of the desirous process that opens windows to the becoming of scholar institutions and of the city strata, establishing communication channels with the outside, calling into question subjectivity and showing how the invention of new processes of constitution of oneself and of the living-together is possible.Just as the wanderers of the cities refuse to submit to the total control of the urbanistic plans, also the students refuse the plannings of the architecture of knowledge: what has been identified during the rolê through the peripheries of the school was that, along with the no constantly enunciated by the yougster and to the youngster, the yes and the affirmation of life are present, marked by the agonistic of survivals: on one hand, the lack; on the other, production. The learning provided by the rolê through the peripheries, as a thought experiment, was one of the conceptual invention, necessary to the construction of an aberrant logic.

New Geometric Large Sets

Unknown Date (has links)
Let V be an n-dimensional vector space over the field of q elements. By a geometric t-[q^n, k, λ] design we mean a collection D of k-dimensional subspaces of V, called blocks, such that every t-dimensional subspace T of V appears in exactly λ blocks in D. A large set, LS [N] [t, k, q^n], of geometric designs is a collection on N disjoint t-[q^n, k, λ] designs that partitions [V K], the collection of k-dimensional subspaces of V. In this work we construct non-isomorphic large sets using methods based on incidence structures known as the Kramer-Mesner matrices. These structures are induced by particular group actions on the collection of subspaces of the vector space V. Subsequently, we discuss and use computational techniques for solving certain linear problems of the form AX = B, where A is a large integral matrix and X is a {0,1} solution. These techniques involve (i) lattice basis-reduction, including variants of the LLL algorithm, and (ii) linear programming. Inspiration came from the 2013 work of Braun, Kohnert, Ostergard, and Wassermann, [17], who produced the first nontrivial large set of geometric designs with t ≥ 2. Bal Khadka and Michael Epstein provided the know-how for using the LLL and linear programming algorithms that we implemented to construct the large sets. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Classroom controversies: the academic impact of charter schools, suspension bans, and ability groups

Zarecki, Dominic 16 February 2019 (has links)
Education policy is frequently in the crosshairs of ideological disagreement. This dissertation analyzes three controversial policies over which elected school boards often have control: charter schools, suspension bans, and ability groups. How do charter schools impact district academic growth? Researchers typically focus on large districts with many charter schools, but the most common experience is an average-sized district shifting from no charters to one. A difference-in-differences design analyzing a decade of charter expansion in California reveals that impact is contingent on charter type: locally funded charters (i.e. affiliated with the district) lead to either static or decreased growth while directly funded charters (i.e. independent of the district) lead to higher academic growth. Many policymakers have banned or limited suspensions for all but the most serious offenses. The 2013 suspension ban in Los Angeles Unified School District provides a natural experiment; it led to a substantial, 0.2 standard deviation decrease in academic growth among middle schools that had previously issued the banned suspensions. Four subsequent suspension bans – in San Francisco, Pasadena, Oakland, and (grades K-3) all of California – also appear to have harmed academic growth. Simultaneously, suspension bans have an uncertain relationship with dropout rates, the primary mechanism by which bans are meant to impact the school-to-prison pipeline. Instead of banning suspensions, policymakers should carefully test other efforts that decrease suspension and dropout rates without harming academic growth. Finally, educators have utilized between-class ability grouping – sorting students in one grade into different classes by prior ability – for over a century. Proponents rely on a previously untested mechanism: decreased classroom dispersion in prior academic ability allows teachers to target their instruction more narrowly. This final paper measures classroom dispersion directly for the same students over four trimesters. Multivariate regressions and multilevel models evaluate the relationship between classroom dispersion and academic growth while controlling for other classroom characteristics as well as student, teacher, and school effects. Analyses reveal that English classrooms with less dispersion in prior ability experience slightly less growth. However, there is a trade-off: between-class ability grouping improves equity at the expense of overall academic growth.

Hüsken, Maurício January 2018 (has links)
Cycling has grown as a leisure activity, means of transport and mainly as a professional sport. Therefore, deeper studies and research aiming at maximizing the performance of high-level athletes have been made necessary. Additionally to such studies, the area of instrumentation schemes has developed seeking to make possible the measuring and characterization of several parameters for researchers interested in cycling. Regarding the vibrant surging of systems that allow the measuring of magnitudes such as the forces and mechanical power generated by the cyclist, the present research aims at implementing and characterizing the measuring deriving from pedals and crankset for a road bicycle so as to analyze the results with appropriate statistic methods. Considering the mechanical limitations inherent to the bicycle the movement of pedals and crankset independent electrical systems charged by batteries were created, as well as the synchronization for the beginning of data acquisitions through ZigBee modules. Ten volunteers participated on the practices. They generated twenty sprints of data each. Such data served to statistically evaluate and conclude, based on variance analysis, that the power applied by the cyclists are significantly different for one of the load cell.

Fischer, Felícia Miranda January 2017 (has links)
Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events. It is therefore of major importance to identify the community attributes that confer stability in ecosystem processes facing such events. By means of three experiment-based studies, we aimed to explore how plant community aspects affect ecological stability. In the first study, we compared data on biomass productivity before and after a major flood in synthetic plant communities with different values of species richness, functional diversity and community weighted means of functional traits on different measures of stability. In the second experiment, we investigate how changes in rainfall (simulated by rainout-shelters) alter functional traits and diversity and ecosystem processes of a natural grassland under different defoliation frequencies. The third study consisted on a biodiversity experiment in which we manipulated species richness by removals for studying the effects of species diversity on the stability at the community (colonization and extinction) and ecosystem levels (variation in primary productivity). Functional traits and other community features (richness, composition) affected and were affected by the disturbances. Diversity-stability relationships presented different trends depending on the disturbance nature and intensity. Resource inputs following the flood favoured rich communities and the ones characterized by traits related to resource acquisition. Also, defoliation frequency did not affect the way vegetation responded to rainfall manipulation. Stability showed opposite trends when evaluated at different levels of ecological organization. Higher turnover in rich communities corresponded to increased stability in ecosystem processes.

Theory and explanation in the philosophy of David Hume: an approach fallibility?

Santos, Erickson Cristiano dos 28 February 2011 (has links)
This paper aims to present an interpretation of Hume\'s philosophy with its emphasis on epistemology. After a presentation on various topics that are present in his theory of knowledge, addresses the moderate skepticism, mitigated, and the philosophical influences on Hume. The construction of the concept of human nature is due, in part, he inherited the method of natural philosophy, a decisive influence on his methodology. This direction of research enables read Humean skepticism applied to knowledge with a concern less dogmatic than it usually is attributed to him. You can assume if there is a clear understanding of the concepts of experience, theory, explanation and reason, a possibility fallibility of Hume\'s epistemology. This approach allows us to approach the Humean theory of knowledge of Peirce\'s fallibilism to some extent. Thus, in presenting what is a theory in Hume, one arrives at the result that a theory that he did not so skeptical, but must be accepted as the only and therefore a better theory.

An integration of Lean Six Sigma and health and safety management system in Saudi Broadcasting Corporation

Alharthi, Adel Aifan January 2015 (has links)
Lean Six Sigma is a method used to improve the quality and efficiency of processes by reducing variation and eliminating wastes (non-value added activities) in an organisation. The concept of combining the principles and tools of Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma has been discussed in the literature. The majority of Lean Six Sigma applications in private industry have focused primarily on manufacturing applications. The literature has not provided a framework for implementing Lean Six Sigma programmes in non-manufacturing or transactional processes like those in the Entertainment Media industry. The Saudi Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), like many other industries in Saudi Arabia, has high occupational safety risks, such as electric, fire and fall hazards which often occur in the media workplace. These risks are considered very costly and affect productivity and employee morale in general. The main objective of this research is to provide a synergistic approach to integrating occupational health and safety programmes and Lean Six Sigma tools using the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control) problem-solving method to strengthen and assure the success of safety programmes in the Saudi Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). This research identifies the roadmap (i.e. activities, principles, tools, and important component factors) for applying Lean Six Sigma tools in the media industry. A case study addressing the safety issues that affect employees’ performance within the Saudi Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) TV studio is used to validate work outlined in this research. Furthermore, the Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) method is used to understand the probability occurrence of safety hazards. The application of the Taguchi Experimental Design method and other Lean Six Sigma tools, such as Cause and Effect diagrams, Pareto principles, 5S, Value Stream map, and Poka-Yoke have been incorporated in to this research. The application of Lean Six Sigma DMAIC problem-solving tools resulted in significant improvement in safety within SBC. The average electrical hazard incident decreased from 2.08 to 0.33, the average fire hazard incident decreased from 1.25 to 0.08, and the average fall hazard incident decreased from 3.42 to 0.17. The research has important implications for the company and its employees, with positive outcomes and feedback reported by top management, the senior technicians, and experts. The research improved the safety by reducing electrical, fire and fall risks. The Safety training sessions are one of the most significant factors that improve their safety awareness. It is observed that Lean Six Sigma problem-solving tools and methods are effective in the Saudi Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).

Characterising the relationship between practice and laboratory-based studies of designers for critical design situations

Cash, Philip January 2012 (has links)
Experimental study of the designer plays a critical role in design research. However laboratory based study is often poorly compared and contrasted to practice, leading to a lack of uptake and subsequent research impact. The importance of addressing this issue is highlighted by its significant influence on design research and many related fields. As such the main aim of this work is to improve empirical design research by characterising the relationship between practice and laboratory-based studies for critical design situations. A review of the state of the art methods in design research and key related fields is reported. This highlights the importance and commonality of a set or core issues connected to the failure to effectively link study of practice and study in the laboratory. Further to this a technical review and scoping was carried out to establish the most efective capture strategy to be used when studying the designer empirically. Subsequently three studies are reported, forming a three point comparison between practice the laboratory (with student practitioners) and an intermediary case (a laboratory with practitioners) . Results from these studies contextualise the critical situations in practice and develop a detailed multi-level comparison between practice and the laboratory which was then validated with respect to a number of existing studies. The primary contribution of this thesis is the development of a detailed multi-level relationship between practice and the laboratory for critical design situations: information seeking, ideation and design review. The second key contribution is the development of a generic method for the empirical study of designers in varying contexts - allowing researchers to build on this work and more effectively link diverse studies together. The final key contribution of this work is the identification of a number of core methodological issues and mitigating techniques affecting both design research and its related fields.

Multi-wavelength characterization of cadmium telluride solar cell: Development of Q-EBIC and NSOM measurement techniques

Gianfrancesco, Anthony Giacomo 16 April 2013 (has links)
Thin-film inorganic solar cells, such as CdTe, have demonstrated the most promise to date for a viable low-cost renewable energy resource. Their current performance, however, is far from the theoretical limit suffering from significant charge recombination losses due to grain boundaries and point defects. It is likely that the microscopic compositions of grain bulk and grain boundaries are significantly different and not optimal for the overall device performance. Good understanding of charge transport along and across the grain boundaries and other microscopic interfaces is lacking, preventing the development of reliable and predictive device models. The insufficient microscopic understanding hinders efficient characterization of photovoltaic materials and also holds back the development of process control techniques. We first show preliminary results for a novel technique, quantum-dot electron-beam induced current to characterize semiconductors in the near-field. We also propose the use of near-field optical scanning microscopy for high precision optical excitation and for local, high-resolution characterization. These imaging techniques are examined with the goal of synthesizing information obtained by both methods, of material phenomena at the relevant length scales, to other measurement methods. The most important nanoscale phenomena being the separation of compositional and electrical effects.
