DEVELOPING CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND PROCEDURAL FLUENCY IN ALGEBRA FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY

Wojcik, Andrew J 01 January 2017 (has links)
Teaching students with Intellectual Disability (ID) is a relatively new endeavor. Beginning in 2001 with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, the general education curriculum integrated algebra across the K-12 curriculum (Kendall, 2011; National Governors Association Center for Best Practices & Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010), and expansion of the curriculum included five intertwined skills (productive disposition, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and conceptual understanding) (Kilpatrick, Swafford, & Findell, 2001). Researchers are just beginning to explore the potential of students with ID with algebra (Browder, Spooner, Ahlgrim-Delzell, Harris & Wakeman, 2008; Creech-Galloway, Collins, Knight, & Bausch, 2013; Courtade, Spooner, Browder, & Jimenez, 2012; Göransson, Hellblom-Thibblin, & Axdorph, 2016). Most of the research examines the development of procedural fluency (Göransson et al., 2016) and few researchers have explored high school level skills. Using a single-case multiple-baseline across participants design, the study proposes to teach two algebra skills to six high school students with ID, creating an equation (y=mx+b) from a graph of a line and creating a graph from an equation. The six high school students with ID will be recruited from a school district in central Virginia. The intervention package modeled after Jimenez, Browder, and Courtade (2008), included modeling, templates, time delay prompting, and a task analysis. Results showed that all six individuals improved performance during intervention for the target skills over baseline; results also indicated that in three out of the six cases some generalization to the inverse skill occurred without supplemental intervention. The ability of individuals with ID to generalize the learning without intervention provides some evidence that individuals with ID are developing conceptual understanding while learning procedural fluency.

This research presents an experimental analysis of different strategies used in the literature to develop exact algorithms to solve the problem. Initially, the algorithms are classified according to the approaches used to solve the problem. Features of two or more approaches can be found in some of those algorithms. The approaches investigated here are: the two-stage method, branch-and-bound, k-best and the preference-based approach. The main contribution of this research lies in the fact that no research was presented to date reporting a systematic experimental analysis of exact algorithms for the Multiobjective Spanning Tree Problem. Therefore, this work can be a basis for other research that deal with the same problem. The computational experiments compare the performance of algorithms regarding processing time, efficiency based on the number of objectives and number of solutions found in a controlled time interval. The analysis of the algorithms was performed for known instances of the problem, as well as instances obtained from a generator commonly used in the literature / O Problema da ?rvore Geradora Multiobjetivo ? [en] THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF COMPOSITE COMPONENTS OF SEMI-RIGID JOINTS / [pt] ESTUDO TEÓRICO-EXPERIMENTAL DAS COMPONENTES MISTAS EM LIGAÇÕES SEMIRRÍGIDAS

MONIQUE CORDEIRO RODRIGUES 21 July 2016 (has links)
[en] One of the methods adopted for the characterization of the composite semirigid joints is the method of the components described in Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4. The model developed in the method considered for the composite contribution the incorporation of reinforcement bar components, aspects related to the concrete and the connector strength. However, the model is based on not fully validated assumptions as to structural response of the composite portion of the joint, mainly negative moment areas. All this aspect has limited the use of the method for the design of composite structures. This fact encouraged to the conception and development of an experimental program to investigate joints in composite structures, by means of pull out tests, considering the failure modes due to rupture of the reinforcement bar, of the anchorage of the bar, and of the weld connectors. Additionally was made a research of the weld connectors influence due to failure of this element in the course of a few pull out tests. The results of the tests developed have allowed general conclusions could be determined and made possible a better understanding of the weld and its impacts to the system. The correct use of composite joints solutions can increase the competitiveness of the structural system, providing more economical and efficient buildings

Développement de la technique de vélocimétrie par marquage moléculaire pour l'étude expérimentale des micro-écoulements gazeux / Development of molecular tagging velocimetry technique for experimental study of gaseous microflows

Samouda, Feriel 13 December 2012 (has links)
Gaseous microflows are rarefied flows characterized by a non-negligible Knudsen number. A literature review highlights a crucial need of experimental data on velocity fields within gaseous microflows. These data are required for a relevant discussion on the validity and limits of applicability of the different boundary conditions proposed in the slip flow, which is a regime often encountered in gaseous microsystems. An experimental setup has been designed for analyzing by MTV the velocity distribution in microchannels. The technique consists in detecting the displacement of acetone molecules, introduced as tracers in a gas flow; these molecules exhibit phosphorescence once excited by a UV light source. The various compromises taken into account for the setup design (choice of tracer, laser, channel material and design, camera and intensifier…), as well as the acquisition and processing techniques are detailed in the manuscript. The experimental analysis starts with a study of the acetone phosphorescence signal. Then, the MTV technique is validated by velocity field measurements in internal laminar flows through a rectangular minichannel in non-rarefied regime. The obtained results are successfully compared to the theoretical velocity profile of a Poiseuille flow. Finally, preliminary results obtained at lower pressures are presented and commented. The signal detection at a pressure level as low as 1 kPa is encouraging and draws various perspectives for the exploration of rarefied regimes

Numerical modeling of steel beam-to-column joints subjected to bending and normal force.

The joints develop a fundamental role in the global behaviour of steel structures. Several researches are being developed to understand the real behaviour of a joint and its influence in the global frame capacity and beam-to-column joints of the steels buildings. Nowadays, the Brazilian Code of the Steel Portal Frame Design, NBR 8800, considers the joint behaviour between two extreme situations: rigid, where any rotations dont occur between the connected members, transfering substantial bending moments, and also shear and axial forces; or pinned, its characterised by almost free rotation movement between the connected elements that prevents the transmission of bending moments. However, some actual codes of the steel structures project, consider that the joints present an intermediate behaviour, in other words, semi-rigid, that may be subjected to a combination of bending moment and axial force. But, these codes dont consider the presence of axial force (tension and/ or compression). A single empirical limitation of 5% of the beams plastic axial capacity is the only enforced provision in Eurocode 3. This filosofy design is based on components method, for joint capacity evaluation and its classification concerning the joint rotation stiffness. This component method is based on mechanical models (spring model) created by an association of rigids and flexible joints components represented by a translacional spring. The objective of this present work is describing some results of flush endplate semi-rigids beam-to-column joints obtained across finite elements method and geometric and material non-linear analises. These consider the main parameters that influence the components behaviour about the stress and deformation distribution.

Exploring The Development of Social Responses in Children with Callous and Unemotional Traits: An Examination of The Impact of Hypothesized Reinforcing and Aversive Stimuli

Maharaj, Andre 28 March 2014 (has links)
Callous and unemotional (CU) traits in children with conduct problems have been indicated as precursors to adult psychopathy. The analysis of the sensitivity to rewards and punishment in this population may be useful in the identification of effective behavior modification programs and particularly the delineation of ineffective punishment procedures. Scores on the Child Psychopathy Scale, Inventory of Callous and Unemotional Traits, Contingency Response Rating Scale and the Sensitivity to Reward Sensitivity to Punishment – Children Revised scale were used to evaluate 20 children, aged 7-13, recruited from FIU’s Center for Children and Families. The sample comprised 14 males and 6 females displaying a range of psychopathic traits measured by the CPS, with scores from 9 to 46 (M = 28.45, SD = 10.73). Sensitivity to punishment was examined using a behavioral task in which children endured various amounts of either white noise (type I punishment) or time-out from positive reinforcement (type II punishment) in order to gain access to a demonstrated reinforcer. The sample was stratified on the basis of the magnitude of psychopathy scores, and sensitivity to rewards and punishment were evaluated using a Behavioral Activation / Behavioral Inhibition framework by examining task performance: the frequency and duration of punishment conditions selected, electrodermal activity (skin conductance response), and parent-reported measures of child sensitivity to reward and punishment. Results indicated that the magnitude of CU traits was directly proportional to hyposensitivity to punishment and hypersensitivity to reward. Children with elevated levels of CU traits elected to endure a greater frequency and duration type I punishment in order to maintain continued access to the reinforcer. Significant differences were not found between high- and low-psychopathy children in the selection of type II punishment. The findings indicate that although there may be a hyporeactivity to type I punishment in children with CU traits, the use of a type II punishment by the removal of a positive stimulus has demonstrated treatment efficacy. The difference in sensitivity to rewards and the types of effective punishment in children with CU traits may affect reinforcement based learning, leading to the ineffectiveness of traditional methods informing the development of social responses.

Applying Psychological Theories of Personality, Identity, and Intergroup Conflict to Radical Violence: A Case Study of Extremist Behavior

Flynn, Sydney 01 January 2018 (has links)
This paper aims to address possible psychoanalytical explanations for the heinous acts in which terrorists, particularly ISIS, engage. It focuses on Harold D. Lasswell’s principles of the id, ego, and superego as well as Tajfel and Turner’s social identity theory. Within the framework of these two theories, relevant psychological and social psychological theories are discussed in order to explore a possible connection between the psyche of violent perpetrators and their actions. By exploring these connections, I find that there may be more nuanced psychological explanations for these violent acts, which could lead to new methods of weakening perceived biases, intergroup conflicts, and extremist behavior.

Análise numérica e experimental de vigas de madeira laminada colada em situação de incêndio / Numerical and experimental analysis of glued laminated timber in fire situation

Gisele Cristina Antunes Martins 29 July 2016 (has links)
Structural elements of Glued Laminated Timber (glulam) have long been used in North America and Europe, but their use is still restricted in Brazil for safety reasons, especially related to potential risks in face of fire. The present work investigated the thermal and mechanical behavior of structural elements of glulam exposed to fire standard ISO 834. The glued laminated timber was produced from two wood species (Eucalyptus and Pinus) without any treatments. However, elements treated with wood treatments like Copper Chrome Boron (MOQ® OX 50 -CCB-O) or fire retardant treatment (OSMOGUARD® FR100) were also used to investigate their influence on charring. The main objective of this study was to assess the fire resistance of the glulam elements, evaluating the influence of wood species and, consequently, the influence of density, as well as the effects of preservative treatment. The experimental program was carried out in a gas oven, with internal dimensions of 3m x 4m x 1.5m, and the numerical analyses were performed by ABAQUS. The numerical analyses aimed to monitor the deflection in the middle of the span as well as the temperature distribution along the depth of the elements. The results obtained from both the experimental and numerical analyses were compared. Calculation methods proposed by different authors and international regulations have been applied for verification of the proposed design in fire. A comparison of the results show that the use of calculation methods (simplified and advanced) represents a risk to fire safety in case of using the values of char rate for Brazilian wood species determined from the calculation methods.

Resistência e deformabilidade de blocos vazados de concreto, prismas e paredes e suas correlações com as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais constituintes / Strength and deformability of hollow concrete blocks, prisms and walls and their correlation to mechanical properties of constituent materials

Claudius de Sousa Barbosa 21 July 2008 (has links)
This work aims to identify and correlate the mechanical properties of concrete and bedding mortar to the structural behavior of hollow concrete blocks, prisms and walls, by mean of physical and numerical modeling. A detailed experimental investigation was carried out by assuming as a premise the use of plastic consistency concrete to produce hollow blocks and cylindrical samples. This was done to assure the same material properties in each test series. Confinement effect in block compression tests causes a non-uniform strain distribution through face-shells and webs. This effect induces an increase of the block ultimate load. Modified block tests by reducing the confinement effect were performed. The results showed that confinement reduction brings a more uniform strain distribution, which is similar to the observed one in the central blocks of prisms and walls. A decrease of compressive strength and changes the failure mode were also evidenced. Confinement effect and influence of water loss during the curing of mortar joints were also considered. Indicative parameters about bedding mortar behavior were obtained and the resistant capacity and the failure mode of prisms and walls were associated to them. The mechanical properties of materials obtained in tests were implemented in a finite elements numerical model to analyze the behaviour of masonry elements under compression. The numerical analysis gave good predictions of strength, deformability and failure mode. Based on the numerical and experimental results, a stress and strain distribution model was realized, which enabled an experimental procedure for the determination of the block axial stiffness. Correlations and algebraic formulation were proposed for the behavior analysis and quantitative evaluation of strength and deformability of blocks, prisms and walls.
