The Effects of Familism and Sibling Relationships on Mexican-Origin Adolescents' Intentions for Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drug Use

Mechammil, Molly 01 May 2016 (has links)
Mexican-origin youth represent a large and growing ethnic minority subgroup, and have disparate risk for early initiation of substance use. Therefore, it is crucial to understand factors that can prevent them from the initiation of substance use at an early age. Previous research has identified positive sibling relationships, lower rates of older sibling deviant behavior, and high levels of family values as important protective factors relevant for early substance use risk for European American youth. However, few studies have examined these influences among Mexican origin adolescents, and generalizability cannot be assumed given the notable differences between Mexican origin and EuropeanAmerican siblings. For example, Mexican origin siblings spend more time together than European-American siblings, and are shaped by many cultural factors, such as traditional family values (familism). The goal of this study was to understand the potential explanatory and interactive effects of familism and sibling relationships on Mexican origin youths’ intentions for using substances. I hypothesized that sibling relationship quality would serve as both a partial mediator and moderator between familism and ATOD use intentions, and that higher levels of older sibling deviance would partially mediate and/or moderate the association between familism and younger sibling ATOD use intentions. I used secondary data to analyze 409 pre-adolescent Mexican origin youth recruited from a metropolitan area in Northern California. None of our hypothesized models were confirmed. Specifically, negative sibling relationship quality did not serve as a moderator (b = -.27, SE = .87, OR = .77, p = .77), nor a mediator (b = -.01, SE = .04, 95% CI = -0.12, .05). between familism and ATOD use intentions. Further, older sibling deviant behavior did not serve as a moderator (b = .38, SEb = .94, OR = 1.47, p = .68), nor a mediator (b = -.00, SE = .04, 95% CI = -0.10, .05) between familism and ATOD use intentions. Despite the null findings, this study has important clinical implications, including the recommendation to promote sibling relationships in prevention programs for Latino youth. There were several limitations of the study which are discussed along with suggestions for future research directions.

The Recruitment Process within the Family Business Context : A Multiple Case Study

Paul, Maya Larissa, Kleiner, Rico January 2017 (has links)
The presented master thesis is an exploratory, multiple case study that analyzes the recruitment practices and their respective processes in five family firms located in the Southern part of Germany. A strong HR function inside a company is necessary to stay competitive in the market and survive in the long-run. Hereby recruitment is an important field of research because firms depend on their employees who are ultimately the vital factor in running a successful business. Recruitment is an ongoing process in a dynamic business world and a very crucial responsibility of HRM inside the organization. Especially due to the strong family involvement, commitment to the localities, overlap between financial and nonfinancial goals, and a deeply ingrained business culture based on the family founders’ values, establishing an effective recruitment process is even more important in family than in nonfamily firms. Thus, this study aims at exploring and researching individual characteristics associated with the recruitment practices and tries to display the main influencing factors in the recruitment process of the studied firms. Through analyzing secondary and primary data collected with the help of semi-structured interviews, the authors were able to gather insightful data from CEOs and HR representatives in order to draw comprehensive conclusions regarding how suitable employees are recruited in family firms. The results show that the person-organization (P-O) fit is a main component which family firms try to assess in their applicants. Personality and the fit to the respective business culture, apart from the actual skill-set, is an additional requirement for being recruited. Through various recruitment channels, strategies, and assessments the family firms try to use the construct of familiness to their advantage and benefit.

The Political Use of "Family Values" Rhetoric

Powell, Elizabeth Caroline 04 December 2006 (has links)
The bipartisan political slogan “family values,” coupled with discourse surrounding the supposed breakdown of the American family, is a rhetorical move used by political agencies in an effort to excuse the socio-economic failings in America and to reassign responsibility for these failings to the private sphere. This rhetoric tends to promote the idealized nuclear family, while marginalizing the poor and non-traditional family groups.

Tolimojo mergaičių rengimo šeimai ir suaugusių moterų gebėjimo kurti savo šeimą sąsajos / Links between remote preparation of girls for family life and adult female preparation to create their own families

Minialgienė, Zofija 20 January 2014 (has links)
A high rate of divorce in Lithuania and the world shows that young people often create families when they are not properly prepared to. Family is the first and the main place of human (self)-education. Remote preparation of girls for family is the very first stage of girl‘s education for family. It takes place in parents‘ family both directly and indirectly and forms the basis for further education of girls, wives- and mothers-to-be. Education of sexuality, femininity and motherliness are fundamental elements of girl‘s education for family. However, due to enormous changes in life of society and family in the recent decades, and due to ongoing secularization that influences depreciation of family value and the concept of family itself and its meaning in the life of every human, remote preparation for family does not fulfil its functions and objectives.
