Asian Americans: the mediating effects of family on the longitudinal impact of discrimination on self-esteem and wellbeing

Lasley, Chandra Y. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Family Studies and Human Services / Joyce Baptist / The model minority stereotype portrays Asian Americans as resilient, educationally and financially successful, and family-focused, while it downplays the realities of discrimination and its effects on self-esteem. Research suggests that gender roles and immigration experiences are contributing factors to why Asian American women, especially second-generation immigrants, experience greater stress than women of other ethnic groups and Asian American men in general. Considering most Asian Americans are of East and Southeast Asian heritages influenced by Confucian family values and gender roles, this study examined how these values mediated the associated from discrimination to self-esteem during adolescence, and to educational and financial achievement (wellbeing) during adulthood for second-generation immigrants. Using data from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (N = 554), results from a partially constrained group-comparison model demonstrated that Confucian values of familism and family cohesion were factors that significantly predicted adolescent self-esteem and adult educational achievement. Men’s level of familism endorsement was also uniquely related to experiences with discrimination. Clinical implications and further research directions are discussed.

Family values and child care during the Reformation era: a comparative study of Hutterites and some other German Protestants

Harada, Mary January 1968 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of this dissertation is to compare family and educational values and practices of the Hutterite Brethren during the Reformation era with those of the main-stream of German-speaking Protestantism. Family and educational concepts and developments and the progress of elementary-vernacular education within both magisterial Protestantism and evangelical Anabaptism are described and their similarities and differences made clear. The Hutterites, who with the Mennonites constitute the two major groups of evangelical Anabaptism, are given particular attention since only they withdrew from the world to live in closed communistic societies. Within these communities they exhibited certain differences in their pattern of life from that of their contemporaries. [TRUNCATED]

Validating Beliefs: Liberal And Conservative Protestant Views of Sexual Morality in America

Smith, Richard Maurice January 2009 (has links)
While many debates about sexual morality seem to be dominated by conservative, right wing Protestants, there are differing worldviews within Protestantism as there are in the larger American culture. In Protestantism, disparate beliefs about sexual morality have caused division between groups. Concurrently, these differing perspectives have bled into the larger discourse about sexual morality in the United States. Each group has spokespeople who attempt to validate what individuals should believe about issues like the family, sexuality, and how Protestants, and Americans in general, should think and act regarding these issues. Prior research provided a limited analysis about the views and conversations of these spokespeople and their arguments to validate their positions on sexual morality issues. To better understand how Protestants attempt to validate their beliefs, I focus on what liberals and conservatives say about sexual morality issues. In particular, what do those in influential positions (i.e., authors and pastors) tell others? To answer this question, I conduct a content analysis of 30 Protestant sex advice manuals and 20 in-depth pastoral interviews. The results indicate not only the differences and similarities of beliefs, but also that many spokespeople use various forms of validation besides, or in addition to, biblical texts. The influential are influenced greatly by their own personal biases and views of gender, maybe even more than their particular religious beliefs. Future research should explore whether there is a definitive correlation between spokespersons' messages and listeners' adherence. / Sociology

Les conflits d'intérêts en droit extrapatrimonial de la famille / Conflict of interest in non-property family law

Dos reis, Vignon Edihno 23 September 2016 (has links)
Due to the rise of individualism, we observe that family law sums increasingly up to a collection of individual prerogatives to the detriment of a group right. However, by assigning some values to each member of the family through subjective rights and civil liberties, the legislator seems to forget that members of the same family also live for each other, with each other. Accordingly, when individuals of the same family pursue antagonist interests, each relies on individual prerogatives, which the law makes available, to win the case.Faced with these conflicts of interest in family law, our contemporary law runs out to regulate them and hardly offers an overview, especially at a time when the logic of human rights tends more and more to blur the clear arbitration agreed by the legislature.Based on this lack of overall vision for the regulation of conflicts of interest in family law, we will mainly consider the possibility of restoring an overview of an increasingly empirical regulation of conflicts of interest in family law; in other words, it is necessary to try and find some legal security, in this messy situation, by identifying clear and relevant arbitration.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Caio Ruano da Silva.pdf: 1014873 bytes, checksum: b9f34a45f26b0835a5237b3cd46015a3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-27 / The main goal of this dissertation is to investigate how the values of the entrepreneur family and the organizational culture affects the planning structure of the succession process in a family business group located in the Espírito Santo State. The data was collected through methodological triangulation, as suggested by Jick (1979), and the selected methods were semi-structured interviews, nonsystematic observation and document research. The data was analyzed using thematic content analysis (BARDIN, 2006). As main contribution, this dissertation illustrates that a disruption of the family values shared in the founder s generation and the ones of his descendents directly affected the choice of the potential successor for the business. It is probable that the mentioned disruption is related to a transition in the way the family organized itself. Until the founder s generation the family organized itself as a production unit. Perhaps, it was observed that the heirs shifted to a consumption unit s mindset (DAVEL e COLBARI, 2000). It s also possible that the main cause of the founder s insecurity lies on his fear that the organizational values might change after the succession. This argument is considered valid, once the choice of the potential successor was based mainly in normative trust, which is developed based in common values between the parties (LANE, 1998). Moreover, some aspects of the organizational culture, such as its informality and the centralized and intuitive decision making processes, reflect on the succession process planning structure, which was observed to share the same characteristics / O objetivo desta dissertação é investigar como os valores da família empresária e a cultura organizacional influenciam no planejamento do processo sucessório em uma empresa familiar, de grande porte, localizada no Estado do Espírito Santo.

The "Kangaroo Generation" presents itself in contemporary times as one of the characteristics of the "full nest" phenomenon, which is part of the mature phase of the Brazilian family life course, and presents itself in the period of transition to the adult life course of the child who chooses to postpone the time of leaving home, even if financially successful. This collective case study is of a qualitative nature and has as general objective to know the main contemporary family values that permeate the transition of the young adult who extended the domestic coexistence with his family of origin, through the investigation of the concepts that parents and children have about objects the theme and identification of the main family beliefs and practices, in order to broaden the reflection of the families involved, as well as the knowledge and the discussion about the same, before the academic areas or public agendas. For this purpose, a script was developed to carry out semi-structured interviews with the families. In all, four families from the metropolitan region of Salvador (married parents with sons or daughters graduated at least) were interviewed based on the assumptions of the generation in focus. After applying the interviews and transcription, the results were analyzed within the case and later cross-checked, in the light of the literature review of the text, under the systemic paradigm and theoretical aspects that involve the same, such as the Bioecological theory of Human Development and the Family Life Course. Common known family values were: Autonomy, Education, Personal Achievement, Lasting Family Links, Humanity, Standard of Living, Safety and Example. The research revealed that the 'Kangaroo Generation' family maintains the transgenerational role of values that elicit the continuity of the collective feeling necessary for the adaptation of its members to the context and time.
