Feminist Futures : Futures studies through the lens of feminist epistemologies / Feministiska framtider : Framtidsstudier utifrån ett feministiskt epistemologiskt perspektivAn, Jihyun January 2017 (has links)
This study explores how futures studies could engage with critical feminist perspectives in an intrinsic manner and what feminist futures might mean. The study brings attention to the less discussed subject of epistemological basis in futures studies. Literature study and semi-structured interviews with practitioners and researchers working with feminist approaches in the fields related to futures development was deployed. I’ve analyzed Wendell Bell’s discussion on epistemological foundation of futures studies from feminist epistemological perspective, and have suggested the potential of feminist epistemology of situated knowledges and partial objectivity for futures studies. Based on the findings from the semi-structured interviews, an alternative feminist scenario set in Swedish society in the year of 2050 in the format of a fiction is presented with the aim to provide a detailed and situated narrative of political and daily lives in feminist futures. The feminist futures scenario should not be understood as the singular feminist future suggested for implementation. The intention is to demonstrate how the visionary dimensions of feminist studies could be articulated in various forms of futures studies, and to open up space for rich debates on envisioning feminist futures.

Account/ability: Disability and Agency in the Age of BiomedicalizationJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: Over the last half century, global healthcare practices have increasingly relied on technological interventions for the detection, prevention, and treatment of disability and disease. As these technologies become routinized and normalized into medicine, the social and political dimensions require substantial consideration. Such consideration is particularly critical in the context of ableism, in which bodily and cognitive differences such as disabilities are perceived as deviance and demand intervention. Further, neoliberalism, with its overwhelming tendency to privatize and individualize, creates conditions under which social systems abdicate responsibility for social issues such as ableism, shifting accountability onto individuals to prevent or mitigate difference through individualized means.
It is in this context that this dissertation, informed by critical disability studies and feminist science and technology studies, examines the understanding and enactment of disability and responsibility in relation to biomedical technologies. I draw from qualitative empirical data from three distinct case studies, each focused on a different biomedical technology: prenatal genetic screening and diagnosis, deep brain stimulation, and do-it-yourself artificial pancreas systems. Analyzing semi-structured interviews and primary documents through an inductive framework that takes up elements of Grounded Theory and hermeneutic phenomenology, this research demonstrates a series of tensions. As disability becomes increasingly associated with discrete biological characteristics and medical professionals claim a growing authority over disabled bodyminds, users of these technologies are caught in a double bind of personal responsibility and epistemic invalidation. Technologies, however, do not occupy either exclusively oppressive or liberatory roles. Rather, they are used with full acknowledgement of their role in perpetuating medical authority and neoliberal paradigms as well as their individual benefit. Experiential and embodied knowledge, particular when in tension with clinical knowledge, is invalidated as a transgression of expert authority. To reject these invalidations, communities cohering around subaltern knowledges emerge in resistance to the mismatched priorities and expectations of medical authority, creating space for alternative disabled imaginaries. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology 2020

Organisations alternatives et empowerment : une approche féministe : Penser l'organizing depuis ses marges / Alternative organizations and empowerment : a feminist approach : Rethinking organizing from its marginsDorion, Léa 21 November 2018 (has links)
This thesis is part of a conversation on alternative organizations, and underlines the potential of a feminist approach to understand these organizations. I offer to study a core process of feminist organizations :empowerment. The objective is both to explore how this sheds a new light on feminist and alternative organizing, and to rethink organizing from its margins. To do so, I have conducted a two-years feminist ethnography within a feminist collective. The ethnographic tale describes three dimensions of empowerment as it is practiced within the collective: conscientization, mobilization and social transformation. It entails a definition of empowerment as a collective, dissonant andprefigurative praxis, which performativelyconstructs the organization as feminist. I suggest to think of empowerment as an alternative organizing process, which incarnatesand politicizes an ontology of becoming fororganizations.

The year 2017 was marked by the #MeToo social movement condemning sexual
violence. As a result, there was a wave of disclosures where many people shared
on social networks their experiences with situations of sexual misconduct they had
lived. For this research project, I focus on people who identify as women and who
have testified online.
The literature review explores the construction of meaning around sexual violence,
focusing on certain themes: feminist epistemological postures and situated
knowledge, the space of the women's cause, online disclosures and the context of
#MeToo in Quebec.
The problematic for this thesis is centred around an analysis of online disclosures
in Quebec, exploring the perceptions and experiences of people identifying as
women linked to the #MeToo movement. The initial general research question was:
How do participants describe their process of disclosure on the Instagram platform,
seven years after the start of the #MeToo movement? For the research
methodology, feminist epistemology operates as an anchor, since the study is part
of an interpretive epistemological posture for this qualitative research.
