Understanding the Digital Music Customer : Attributes of Satisfaction

Hensley, Evan, Kassios, Efstathios January 2010 (has links)

Record companies are suffering due to a downturn in recorded music sales. Innovative firms have developed digital music services that offer recorded music products to customers in new ways, yet sales are not what they used to be. Web 2.0 technologies have changed the customer’s tastes, expectations, and desires. Thus, a deeper understanding of the new “digital customer” is needed in order to better offer services in a way that he or she prefers most.

Fel eller rätt med upphovsrätt : En kritisk diskursanalys av den svenska debatten om upphovsrätten / Copyright or Copywrong : A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Swedish Debate on Copyright and Piracy

Björk, Moa-Lisa January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to investigate how the view on copyright emerges in the media debate, and the overall research question is what possible explanations there might be for the view being different depending on whom the writer is and whom s/he represents. The theoretical framework is Fairclough's critical discourse analysis and the method used is the analytic model in three stages that he presents in his book Language and Power (2001). The empirical material was selected through an initial search in Media Retriever, followed by a manual se-lection process, which resulted in a final selection of eight articles, all published in Swedish daily newspapers between the years 2006 and 2014. In the analysis, two main discourses were identified – the producer discourse and the consumer discourse – in which all the texts could be placed. The producer discourse puts the interests of the author first, and holds the view that copyright law must be strong to protect the authors' rights. The consumer discourse on the other hand puts the interest of the consumer first, and their view is that the public has the right to access the world's collect-ed knowledge and culture. This paper also examines the members' resources that authors bring to the texts in the form of common sense, and also in the form of a motive for entering in the debate. Furthermore, this paper also looks at the fact that power relations between the participants in the texts are complicated as they form a com-plex web of formal and informal power relations. The conclusion is that the main explanation for the different ways of viewing copyright is the two afore-mentioned discourses, and that the members' resources the authors bring to the texts are very ideological. The ideological arguments and the complex power relations result in very rigid positions in the debate. This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Slowing down to speed up : protecting users against massive attacks in content distribution systems / Atrasar para aprimorar : protegendo usuários contra ataques massivos em sistemas de distribuição de conteúdo

Santos, Flávio Roberto January 2013 (has links)
The Internet has become a large platform where users can interact and share personal files or third-party productions. Considering the increasing demand for efficient content sharing, modern and robust content distribution systems (CDS) need to be deployed and maintained. In the context of this thesis, CDS are defined as systems used for sharing any kind of content on the Internet. Two categories of CDS are underscored as the most popular ones: file sharing and streaming systems. Peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures have emerged as a potential solution to improve content dissemination in CDS. The popularization of P2P architectures, in the context of CDS,motivated the scientific community to investigate some challenging problems, namely network topology optimization, bootstrap mechanisms, and service discovery. One particular interesting challenge, in the context of this thesis, is related to mechanisms to approximate users to their personal interests. This is important to guarantee good quality of experience (QoE) to users when searching for content. Imprecise descriptions are likely to happen due to different users’ opinion or malicious behavior. Substantial research has been carried out to fight content pollution in CDS. Proposed approaches try to identify and isolate suspicious content after publication. The rationale is to build a base of knowledge about polluters and fake content. However, the reaction time until a content is considered polluted is considerably long, which allows pollution to get widely disseminated. Furthermore, some previous approaches attempt to polarize contents in either polluted or not, not taking into account the inherent subjectivity behind the evaluation of shared contents. The main objective of this thesis is to devise a mechanism to provide users a good QoE – by acting proactively in the early stages of content distribution life cycle – and reduce the effect of malicious interferences. To achieve that, three main steps guided the research work presented in this thesis. First, we proposed a novel strategy that operates conservatively to avoid wide pollution dissemination. Second, we extended our previous solution to cope with the subjectivity regarding content descriptions. Third, and last, we address the pollution attack as a massive attack. To evaluate our solution, a set of experiments was carried out using both real tests and simulations. Results showed the importance of adopting security measures to mitigate malicious behavior in CDS. In the absence of countermeasure mechanisms, even a small proportion (10%) of attackers was able to subvert the system. The introduction of a conservative strategy in this thesis demonstrated the efficacy of delaying users in circumventing massive attacks.

Peer-to-peer – En teknik för företag?

Lennartsson, Petter, Skogbert, Kristoffer January 2006 (has links)

Gabrielsson, Tommy, Ney, Kristina January 2017 (has links)
In the beginning of the 20th century the music industry went into a crisis when file sharing became more common and at the same time the sale of the CD dropped. This thesis tries to examine what happened with the music industry in Sweden after this crisis and tries to identify the key actors in the field today. This will be illustrated through Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the cultural field and different forms of capital as well as Emma Stenströms theory of the culture economy. A content analysis was made by listening to podcast series from Sveriges Radio and DMG Education covering the music industry, which generated four themes; the crisis, the democratisation of the music industry, image and money. The crisis emerged as a consequence of the digitalization of the music industry. This digitization has changed the structure and qualifications that constructs the field. The record companies power position is no longer as great and the streaming company Spotify have rapidly risen to become a dominating actor within the field. Even the artists power position has become greater, something that within the field has been described as the democratization of the music industry. It has become more acceptable for the artist to earn money after the crisis and cooperation with the commercial industry are at large more approved of. This goes against the previous position of the field where economic success was secondary to cultural values.

Peer-To-Peer webové sdílení souborů ve skupině / Peer-To-Peer Web File Sharing in a Group

Pokorný, Filip January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with file sharing among users through peer-to-peer transfer in a web environment. The aim was to create a simple application which would provide a group of users with an opportunity to share files among them without any presence of third party or limitation. I have met the target using modern web technologies, of which the most important was WebRTC library through which peer-to-peer transfer has been implemented. These technologies were supported by optimased algorithm and the most recent tools for processing and storage of shared files. The result is a real-time application enabling users to create rooms, in which they can share their files. This product was subjected to speed tests, thanks to which the application turned out to be the fastest in the tested environment contrary to solutions with similar nature or any other commonly used tools for file sharing.

Hyperdistribution and the future of copyright economics : A study of the contemporary Nordic Gaming industry / Hyperdistribution och framtiden för upphovsrättens ekonomi : En studie av den samtida nordiska spelbranschen

Rosén, Jimmy January 2009 (has links)

This interdisciplinary study shows that because of the changing demands from consumer caused by the growing influence of the internet and file-sharing the Nordic Gaming industry is going through an economic evolution. This result was derived by using qualitative questionnaires directed towards Gaming industry decision makers in the Nordic region combined with critical discourse analysis based on the methodology of Norman Fairclough, using theories of different characters to understand the field.

In this thesis the case of the Nordic Gaming industry is used to assert that because of changing demands of consumers and an ever growing piracy movement, societies are evolving into transitional economies where it is increasingly harder to sell products consisting of pure information.
