La finitude et le temps en mandarin

Chu, LongJing 12 1900 (has links)
Since Mandarin is a language without verbal morphology, it is difficult to demonstrate the existence of the T-node and the opposition between finiteness and non-finiteness. In this thesis, we analyze this difficulty from the perspective of the semantic-syntactic interface. According to Klein (1998, 2000), finiteness is the carrier of two semantic elements: topic time (TT) and assertion (AST). In Mandarin, aspect particles encode TT and AST. Declarative sentences containing an aspect particle are finite and declarative sentences without an aspect particle are non-finite. Based on the left periphery structuring (Rizzi 1997) revised by Paul (2015) for Mandarin, we will demonstrate that finite declarative complements project to TopicP, while non-finite declarative complements project to TP. Time and finiteness are not assimilated under the same projection in Mandarin. Moreover, finiteness and non-finiteness are better interpreted via a structural distinction in the case of Mandarin.

Universal Algebra Complexes: Extensions and Integral Elements

Chung, In Young 05 1900 (has links)
No abstract provided. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Scope and contents: Two topics are studied in this thesis. The first topic is concerned with the relation between the categories of complexes over two algebras when there is a unitary algebra homomorphism from one to the other. The second topic deals with differential forms. A certain finiteness theorem for the module of integral differential forms is studied.

Satsekvivalenta infinitivfraser i svenskan : En synkron och diakron undersökning / Control Infinitives and ECM-Infinitives in Swedish : A Synchronic and Diachronic Investigation

Kalm, Mikael January 2016 (has links)
This thesis investigates control infinitives and ECM-infinitives in the history of Swedish. Both constructions are non-finite, based on infinitives with or without complements, but share some properties and functions with finite subordinate clauses. Control infinitives (to-infinitives) are headed by the infinitive marker att (which in some cases may be omitted) and have invisible PRO-subjects (“controlled” by, i.e. co-referential with, the subject or object of the matrix), whereas ECM-infinitives are headed by overt subjects, distinguished by their “exceptional case marking” (ECM) from the matrix verb, and never contain the infinitive marker. According to the proposed analyses, conducted within the theoretical framework of generative grammar, control infinitives are CPs, taking the infinitive marker as a non-finite complementizer in C, but lack the TP of the I-domain, whereas ECM-infinitives have no C-layer but, nevertheless, a (sort of) TP. The historical investigation shows that control infinitives have developed more clause like properties over time. In Old Swedish (1220–1526), they only rarely contained e.g. negations or auxiliaries. It is not until the seventeenth century that these elements have come into use in the same way as in modern Swedish. This is accounted for by assuming that the control infinitive in Old Swedish was a recent innovation that did not initially make any use at all of the I-domain. The ECM-infinitives, on the other hand, are taken to have the same structure and function in Old Swedish as in Modern Swedish, as their use and properties have not changed significantly. In addition, the status of the infinitive marker has changed through the history of Swedish. Etymologically a preposition, it is here analysed as a verb phrase element in Early Old Swedish, not as a (non-finite) complementizer as in Modern Swedish. In early Modern Swedish (1526–1732), the preposition till is used in much the same function as att giving rise to two new infinitive markers: till att and till. This development of new infinitive markers is also accounted for in the thesis.

Problematika smyslu života a vybrané aspekty existenciální úzkosti / Issues of meaning of life and selected aspects of existential anxiety

Krátká, Eva January 2013 (has links)
KRÁTKÁ, Eva. The Issues of Meaning of Life and Selected Aspects of Existential Anxiety. Prague, 2012. Dissertation. Charles University in Prague, Philosophical Faculty, Department of Psychology. This dissertation explores issues of experiencing the meaningfulness of life and of selected aspects of existential anxiety, and it verifies whether there is some connection between some measure of meaninglessness of life being experienced and some measure of knowingly experienced existential anxiety and some selected factors which can influence our awareness of our anxiety. The research is focused mainly on adolescents and young and middle-aged adults of different genders, degrees of education and residences in the Czech republic. The survey included 170 respondents and was done with use of quantitative method. Obtained data were processed using the SPSS statistical program, and they are presented in the form of tables, graphs and commentaries. This study confirms an importance and frequency of existential beliefs and experiences and it shows that they are closely connected to an experienced meaningfulness of life and to some personality traits and circumstances of life. Therefore, a deeper research of this area seems to be beneficial and helpful not only from the therapeutic point of view alone.

Predicação na língua Wayoro (Tupi): propriedades de finitude / Predication in the Wayoro language (Tupi): properties of finiteness

Nogueira, Antônia Fernanda de Souza 15 May 2019 (has links)
Generally, the properties of the main-declarative-affirmative-active clauses are the finite verbal clause prototype, that is, the prototype from which non-finite clauses will deviate (GIVÓN, 2016, p. 272). As mentioned in the literature, such deviation will occur in the following syntactic environments: subordinate clauses (CRISTOFARO, 2005) and nominalizations, being the latter a clearly predominant phenomenon in the South American languages (GIJN; HAUDE; MUYSKEN, 2011a). This thesis focuses on the properties of finiteness in these three syntactic environments: matrix sentence, (infinitive) subordinate clause, and nominalization. In several languages, there is a morpheme that creates nouns from intransitive and transitive verbs with the meaning of a place where X happensor an instrument for X(COMRIE; THOMPSON, 2007). In the Wayoro language (Tupari subfamily, Tupian), this morpheme is -p~-m nominalizer. However, we noticed constructions with a homophonous morpheme that appear as complements of verbs and that show properties of clauses. Are these complements better analyzed as nominalizations or as subordinate clauses? The property of main clauses (morphosyntactic finiteness features) person marking, valency-changing morphemes, tense and aspect markers, sentential type, modality, and polarityserve to compare the subordinate clauses and the nominalizations. Based on the morphosyntactic finiteness features, we analyze as nominalization the construction that behaves syntactically as a noun phrase without any finiteness feature. We analyze as a subordinate (infinitive) clause the -p~-m construction which functions as an object of a verb and allows aspect markers and expression of cliticized pronominal subjects or non-pronominal subjects. In this way, morphosyntactic finiteness features allow us: to distinguish, on the one hand, nominalization from subordinate clauses and, on the other hand, matrices from subordinate clauses, since matrix sentences exhibit agreement and tense marking, which do not occur in infinitive subordinate clauses; to distinguish verbal predicates (matrix sentences and subordinate clauses) from nonverbal predicates, since copula and existential verbs do not occur with person marking and tense/aspect affixes.

Parcours acquisitionnel de la négation et de quelques particules de portée en français L2 / An acquisitional study of negation and some focus particles in French L2

Sanell, Anna January 2007 (has links)
<p>This thesis investigates acquisition of negation and focus particles in oral L2 French. It concerns adverbs of addition (aussi, encore), restriction (seulement) and temporal contrast (déjà, encore). These items all lack independent referential value i.e. they depend on other constituents in an utterance for their interpretation, they are not structurally obligatory and they variably affect other constituents in an utterance. The learner has to capture the significance of each item, its syntactic position and its pragmatic function in a given context.</p><p>The study aims at describing the development in oral production of 24 Swedish learners, beginners to very advanced, and 6 native speakers, in all together 80 interviews, in order to postulate an acquisitional itinerary.</p><p>The analysis consists of two parts. The first one concerns negation types such as non in various functions, constituent negation (pas X), phrasal negation (ne…pas) and semi-negations (ne…aucun/jamais/personne/rien). The results show, inter alia, that non is used in different pragmatic functions at different levels of acquisition. At the initial stage, non is also used idiosyncratically as a constituent negation and as a preverbal phrasal negation. At the post-initial stage, where also the verbs are mainly finite, phrasal negation (ne) pas is post-verbal. Furthermore, the analysis showed that jamais and rien appear prior to the other semi-negations. In the second part, the use of focus particles is analyzed. The study revealed that the additive particle aussi appears first, in an initial or final position of an utterance, followed by additive encore and restrictive seulement at the post-initial stage and that the temporal adverbs encore and déjà are almost solely used by advanced learners. An acquisitional sequence was postulated, with idiosyncratic negation and additive focus particles appearing previous to post-verbal negation and restrictive particles. The temporal adverbs of contrast appear at the advanced stages.</p>

Interrogative Clauses and Verb Morphology in L2 Swedish : Theoretical Interpretations of Grammatical Development and Effects of Different Elicitation Techniques

Philipsson, Anders January 2007 (has links)
<p>This dissertation examines direct and subordinate questions, as well as verb morphology in L2 Swedish, from a developmental perspective. The study is cross-sectional, containing data from Iraqi Arabic, Persian and Somali adolescent learners representing three different levels of proficiency. The data are analysed on the basis of two theories: The Markedness Differential Hypothesis and Processability Theory. Data elicited through four different techniques are examined with the aim of examining the possible impact of different data types on the results. The different elicitation techniques used in the study are: oral production, written production, grammaticality judgement and a receptive skills task. Two of the elicitation techniques, written production and grammaticality judgement, include all three structures in focus in the study, whilst the oral production and the receptive task is centred on direct questions.</p><p>The results suggest that there are implicational relationships regarding the order in which the grammatical structures are acquired. On the whole, predictions based on the two theories used as a basis for the analyses find support in the material. Having a wide scope for predictions at the morpho-syntactical level, the results meet the claims in particular of Processability Theory. The predictions and the results do not contrast the two theories with each other. A comparison of the different data types clearly indicates that the grammaticality judgement task substantially diverges from the other data types providing less consistent data and exhibiting trends that are in conflict with the data obtained through the three other elicitation techniques.</p>

Governança pública de royalties: federalismo fiscal e futuras gerações. / Royalties public governance: fiscal federalism and future generations.

Silveira, Alexandre Coutinho da 30 April 2014 (has links)
This dissertation aims to critically analyze the Brazilian governance of public revenues from nonrenewable natural resources. Considering that finiteness is an essential characteristic of natural resources that are exploited, which implies in denying future generations the access to mineral and oil assets, one must acknowledge, in various aspects of governance, the necessity to treat these revenues singularly. To understand what these specificities are, two axes of analysis were elected: the first envolves revisiting the curse of natural resources, the Dutch disease, and phenomena (especially those of economic nature) related to the mineral exploitation; and the second involves consulting doctrine of different areas of study (in and out of Law) about notions of justice, solidarity or equity between generations, as well as searching for specification of this content, which applies to various areas of Law, including and especially Public Finance Law. Building on these foundations, some aspects of Brazilian governance of royalties were elected to be analyzed: fiscal federalism applied to these public revenues; the financial-budgetary treatment of royalties, especially its classification under Law nº 4.320/1964; the utilization of Funds to manage these revenues (the Social Fund); the relationship between the collection of royalties and the collection of taxes, especially in subnational governmental entities largely benefited by these revenues; the ways the law directs and coerces the expenditure of royalties; Brazilian fiscal transparency; and, broadly, the recent modifications (finished and proposed) in the laws that conduct the exploitation of minerals and oil in the country. It is concluded that, although the Brazilian legal system has advanced significantly in some aspects as of late (especially the creation of the Social Fund by the central government, and in respects to fiscal transparency related to the exploratory activities), it is not, under the elected perspectives of analysis, adequately prepared to regulate the governance of public revenues originating from exploration of nonrenewable natural resources.
