The socio-economic adjustment of Finnish immigrants, with special reference to the utilization of social servicesKinamen, Kalervo Ilmari January 1955 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the socio-economic adjustment of Finnish immigrants in Vancouver with a special reference to their use of social welfare services. It surveys the Finnish immigrants' living conditions, housing, interpersonal relationships and their knowledge of the English language. It focuses on Finnish immigrants' use of social assistance, social group work and recreation services, their opinions of, and attitudes toward, social welfare matters and their knowledge of social welfare services.
The method of the study consists of three related parts: a) interviews with the personnel of Finnish associations and churches and with individual Finns, b) examination of the records of Vancouver City Social Service Department and some social group work and recreation agencies, and c) distribution of a questionnaire among the sample group of Finns. The sample group of 200 was selected from 800 adult Finns as indicated by the Vancouver City Directory 1954.
This study shows that social welfare services are not used by the Finns in Vancouver except in extreme need. Social assistance is the most commonly used service. Finnish immigrants become dependent on social assistance because of sickness and lack of savings. Ethnic societies and churches play an important role in welfare of the Finns. The study seems to indicate that a number of Finns have difficulties in their adjustment to Canadian society. Difficulties arise from their lack of knowledge of the English language and their meagre economic resources on their arrival in Canada. These hamper the Finns in their social relationships.
This study seems to suggest that if the difficulties of immigrants are to be alleviated, a more active program of selection, pre-migration preparation and follow-up services must be initiated by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration. Ethnic societies and churches must also take more responsibility in acquainting newcomers with the Canadian manner of living and attempt to bridge the gap that seems to exist between native Canadians and immigrant populations. / Arts, Faculty of / Social Work, School of / Graduate

The Maintenance Of Ethnic Culture And Manifestations Of Ethnic Identity In The Life Stories Of Finnish ImmigrantsGrantham, Minna 01 January 2005 (has links)
This study examined whether Finnish immigrants show evidence of assimilation or if they have maintained their ethnic culture in the United States. More specifically, the purpose was to examine how the ethnic culture has been maintained and the ways that ethnic identity manifests itself in their life stories. Ten qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with Finnish immigrants and children of Finnish immigrants, and emerging themes were identified in the data. The results indicate a strong ethnic identity among Finnish immigrants, yet it appears to be a very much taken for granted experience for them. The immigrants' lives were influenced by their ethnicity in that they lived in predominantly Finnish areas, preferred Finnish as their daily language, participated in Finnish activities, especially the Lutheran church, followed customs, and kept regular contact with friends and family in Finland. One of the major differences between the immigrants and children of immigrants was their language use. The norms and policies have been that ethnic groups will assimilate; yet this cohort of Finnish immigrants demonstrates a high level of maintenance of their ancestral culture, thus providing support for Cultural Pluralism. Future studies should address the specific organizations, mainly the Lutheran church, and its influence on the maintenance of Finnish culture, and future studies should address the meaning of language in more detail.

The purpose of this study is to illustrate and analyze what the socializing process of the Finn ish woman looks like ant to discuss what contributes to the feeling of inclusion, or the feeling of exclusion. The questions asked in the study aim to classify what influenced the decision to move to Sweden. Furthermore they aim to describe what the life in Sweden has been like and what the socialization process for the Finnish woman looks like. Finally I will study what kind of impact the change of life has had for the feeling of inclusion and for social identity. Initially the Finnish immigration to Sweden, through time, is described and then earlier stud ies relation to this study is accounted for. Then the role of social pedagogy in this study is presented. My theoretical concepts are Giddens theory regarding socialization and socializa tions processes and Jenkins theory regarding identity and identity processes. I have prepared the concepts by breaking them down to their core with the purpose to analyze how the con cepts coincide and interact. My means of approach to the area is then accounted for in the method chapter. I have chosen a narrative method and have studies stories of five women , about what their lives in Finland was like, what affected the decision to move to Sweden and what has their lives been like in Sweden. By using a self made process chart for analyze I have charted different themes from the stories I collected in Finnish. These themes have then been connected to my theoretical concepts and earlier studies related to this one. The primary reason for the women to move to Sweden was work. Also search for adventure, the dream of welfare and the duty to follow their husbands is mentioned as reasons. Mostly the life in Sweden is perceived as good and only a few have negative experiences, which usu ally is due to the own attitude regarding the move. The women have experiences of socializa tion in the areas of work, housing, language and communication and association with others. Changes in the identity of the women, have appeared due to changes in context and values or when they have been positively acknowledged by others and finally in situations when the acknowledgment has defaulted, after which an identity crises occurs, which culminates in a changes identity.

Sverigefinnar är den största nationella minoritetsgruppen i Sverige vilket ger vissa speciella rättigheter även till finska invandrare. Tidigare studier har fokuserat på första och andra generationens sverigefinnar och deras integrationsprocess, vilket innebär att det finns behov för kompletterande studier vad gäller finländare som har flyttat till Sverige efter millennieskiftet. Dessa kan per definition anses vara sverigefinnar, men de delar inte samma kultur och historia och saknar kopplingar till den sverigefinska minoritetsgruppen. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur finska invandrare identifierar sig etniskt samt hur de upplever sin integrationsprocess till det svenska samhället. Fokus ligger även på språkets inverkan på identitet och integration. Det empiriska materialet består av sex kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer samt 74 enkätsvar med finländare som har flyttat till Sverige från 2000-talets början och framåt. Materialet har analyserats med hjälp av olika identitetsteorier, som Brubaker & Coopers, Tajfel och Jenkins identitetsteorier. Resultatet visar att den etniska identiteten kan variera efter omständigheterna och beror på olika faktorer. På grund av sociala och kulturella faktorer känner finska invandrare sällan tillhörighet till sverigefinnar. Den huvudsakliga sysselsättningen, det sociala sammanhanget och språket anses vara de tre huvudfaktorer som bidrar till integration. Kunskap i svenska språket har en stor inverkan både på finländarnas etniska identitet och integrationsprocess. / Ruotsinsuomalaiset ovat suurin kansallinen vähemmistöryhmä Ruotsissa, mikä tuo tiettyjä erityisoikeuksia suomalaisille maahanmuuttajille. Aikaisemmat tutkimukset ovat pääasiassa keskittyneet toisen sukupolven ruotsinsuomalaisiin ja heidän kotoutumisprosessiinsa, mikä osoittaa tarpeen täydentäville tutkimuksille koskien suomalaisia maahanmuuttajia Ruotsiin toisen vuosituhannen vaihteen jälkeen. Määritelmän mukaan heidät voidaan nähdä ruotsinsuomalaisina, vaikkeivat he jaa samaa kulttuuritaustaa ja historiaa, sekä yhteydet ruotsinsuomalaiseen vähemmistöryhmään puuttuvat.
