Deiksis in Noord-SothoDu Preez, Petronella Maria, 1963- 06 1900 (has links)
Persoonsdeiksis word hoofsaaklik in Noord-Sotho se
Alhoewel
deiktiese sentrum uitmaak. In Noord-Sothoword demonstratiewe, demonstratief-kopulatiewe,
gemaak is) afhanklik.
derde persoon, demonstratief-kopulatiewe, sekere bywoorde, identifiserende kopulatiewe,
The term deixis is derived from a Greek word deiktikos which means 'point at' and it is used
in grammar to refer to those expressions which describe the essential points of orientation in
a speech situation. The interpretation of deictic expressions can only be made in relation to
a specific reference point (the deictic centre).
Five deictic categories are distinguished. Person deixis concerns the deictic persons, that is
the speaker, the addressee and possibly a third person if he/she/it is present in the speech
situation. Person deixis is mainly reflected in the concordia! and the pronominal system of
Northern Sotho.
Social deixis refers to those expressions which reflect the speaker's attitude towards the
addressee or the third person. Such expressions include lexical items which reflect the
speaker's admiration, dislike or respect towards the addressee, as well as kinship terms and
vocatives. Although the pronominal system of Northern Sotho is neutral with regard to sex,
there are other linguistic ways in which gender distinctions can be drawn.
Place deictic expressions are used to identify the location of an object relative to the deictic
centre. The location of the speech participants or their bodies may constitute this deictic
centre. Demonstratives, demonstrative-copulatives, locational copulatives, locative adverbs
and certain verbs are used for this purpose in Northern Sotho.
Time deixis is mainly lexicalised by means of temporal adverbs and grammaticalised by
means of tense morphemes in the Northern Sotho verb. The interpretation of these
expressions depends on the deictic centre (time when the utterance is made). Time adverbs
as well as the tenses describe the time of an event. These structures will indicate whether
the action took place before coding time (past tense), whether it will take place after coding
time (future tense), or whether it coincides with coding time (present tense).
Discourse deixis pertains to those expressions which are used to refer to parts of the
discourse, or to nominal antecedents of which the referent is not present in the extra-linguistic
context of the utterance. Demonstratives, demonstrative copulatives, third person pronouns,
certain adverbs, identifying copulatives, certain qualificatives and certain conjunctions are used
for this purpose in Northern Sotho. / African Languages / D Litt. et Phil. (Afrikatale)

Problematique de l'identite Juive dans des oevres choises de Patrick Modiano / Issue of Jewish identity in selected works of Patrick ModianoIsaacs, Carole Ann 01 1900 (has links)
Towards the end of the 1960s in France we witness the awakening of the memory of
the Holocaust and the Occupation which coincides with the publication of Patrick
Modiano’s first novel, La place de l’étoile. It is from this time that Jewish memory of
the Holocaust begins to surface and we see the emergence of a literature of the
post-Holocaust generation. Modiano belongs to this generation that, being deprived
of a personal memory of the Holocaust, turns to this period in a quest for roots and
identity. Like his Jewish colleagues, Modiano struggles to come to terms with a past
that he has not experienced and an absence of memory. This dissertation analyses
Modiano’s use of the period of the Holocaust as signifier of Jewish identity in four of
his novels in order to highlight the role of the issue of Jewish identity in the

This PhD, written while working at the Departemental council for Val-de-Marne (CIFRE structure), offers a survey and reflexion on the place given to learning French by migrant women, with complex insertion histories, within a training program of French as a professional language. This program has been initiated and supported by the Department, for which the PhD candidate was project manager. This research raises the question of the place and role of French language in the integrative vision of foreigners by the French State, but also by migrating persons themselves. In the same time, the missions accomplished at CIFRE have allowed to shed the light on a linguistic management and development that appears to be both implicit and territorialized. This research, rooted in the fields of didactics of languages and sociolinguistic, has been developed from a comprehensive and an interpretative epistemological orientation, informed by the hermeneutical points of view, questioning all together the notions of history, experience and projection (of the witnesses, as well as the researcher)

Previous issue date: 2016-02-22 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / This dissertation is mainly aimed to do a mapping or not of occurrence of plural reading in the first person of existing verbs in spoken language in the Baiano semiarid region through a sociolinguistic analysis, checking which linguistic and sociocultural factors that contribute or not to this variation. We sought to investigate the hypothesis that there are patterns of variation and quantitative differences among the communities studied, due to: i) the ethnic background; ii) the community isolation and iii) the distance geographic area of the capital city, urbanization center. For this, it was taken as a research topic verbal agreement with the first person plural (P4) in rural communities of the Baiano semi-arid region, this topic has already been investigated by scholars as Silva (2003) and Lucchesi, Baxter and Silva (2009) which focused only in rural communities marked ethnically, Nina (1980), Almeida (2006), Araujo (2012), in addition to the descriptive analysis undertaken by dialectology scholars of the early twentieth century and by Veado (1982). Perceiving that the studies with the theme of the verbal agreement with P4 take, in most cases, as an example urban Brazilian Portuguese and also the study of pronominal switching (we / us), it is believed that this research becomes relevant because it is a work, in a way, unprecedented, once investigates rural speech and search to see specifically how the verb agreement is made with the first person plural in this variety. It drew up a comparative study between the dialects of the Baiano regions: Rio de Contas and Jeremoabo which according to social history are formed by black people (Barra / Bananal community) and white people (Mato Grosso community), located in the municipality communities of Rio de Contas; remaining Indians in Tapera community, Quilombo remnants in Casinhas community; mestizos and whites people in Lagoa do In?cio community, such communities are located in the municipality of Jeremoabo. In conclusion, the characterization of popular Portuguese of the country is marked by the socio-historical influence of each chosen community. Therefore, it can state that the verbal agreement is a variable phenomenon in the Baiano semi-arid region that it has gained trend towards the use of CV. Thus, it is used the theoretical - methodological model of Variationist Sociolinguistics it was found that the contact of ethnic groups, such as the isolation of some of them, resulted in linguistic differences, so that it can?t be ignored that formation of the popular Brazilian Portuguese language has its roots planted in the rural variety.

Gestualité : pour la création scripturale : le cas des langues des signes / Gestures : for scriptural creation : in the case for sign languagesDanet, Claire 21 November 2018 (has links)
The digital revolution has evolved the act of writing; its forms have changed. From this phenomenon, new Graphomotor oriented research opportunities have emerged. The knowledge gathered by this research introduces a new angle for setting up a new writing system. Until today, no writing system has been able to transcribe the multidimensional nature of sign languages (SL). For that reason, sign languages offer the perfect opportunity for this kind of research. In this study we try to understand the link between gestures and meaning for the speaker and discover what features and how much of signing (gestures, body language) can be kept in the act of writing. Our objective is to maintain the integral meaning of gestures for the signer/writer. To do so, we offer the creation of a technologically advanced scriptural environment in which meaningful gestures can be put into perspective. First, this multidisciplinary research focuses on what can be transferred from the former gestural act (signing) to the latter (writing). Then, we consider the tool that will enable this transfer. To do so, we follow a phenomenological approach, or in other terms, a descriptive methodology from the firstperson point of view. This methodology is built upon signers’ feedback gathered of the experience lived during interviews. Shaping this method to fit the French SL offers precise gestural descriptions from signers themselves. This database is then compared with alinguistic and kinesiological analysis from the third-person point of view. These gestural meaning results enable us to reflect on how to create a guided experience tool enabling the assimilation of SL’s gestural matter and the creation of scriptural forms. To do that, we follow a UX design, an enaction design, and a tool based approach in order to offer immersion and interaction. This kind of device offers a new perspective to signers on their own language and more generally, offers the possibility for any user to form a new relationship with her or his own gestures.

La contribution du roman-mémoires des années 1730 / Birth of the individual ans emergence of the novel of formation. The contribution of the memoirs novel of the years 1730Ibrahim, Laith 03 July 2018 (has links)
The critical discourse on the memoir novel of the years 1730 often seems to hesitate between two antagonistic attitudes : either it discerns in it the signs of a "birth of the individual" and sees in it the emergence of the novel of formation (Bildungsroman). Or it considers these categories as anachronistic : did not the notion of the "individual" as a being conscious of itself and of its emotional interiority and as the basic element of which society is composed only appear in the second half of eighteenth century, most notably in the reflections of Jean-Jacques Rousseau ? And did not the novel of formation find its prototype in Germany, with Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship ? But in reality, Rousseau and Goethe were both great readers of memoir novels and were clearly inspired by them in their writings. The present thesis hopes to show that the memoir novel of the years 1730 can be analyzed as a novel of formation, insofar as it describes the constituent steps of individual identity and carries a worldview regarding its place in social life. However, such a hypothesis implies asking some questions about this novelistic form, considered as "rebellious to any order" (Henri Coulet, Le Roman jusqu’à la Révolution) : How can this novelistic form be defined ? What was its role in the crystallization of the notion of the "individual", as well as that of the novel of formation ? These are the questions that this thesis attempts to answer by analyzing some emblematic works of this then new novelistic form, as well as their importance, their philosophical, aesthetic, political and anthropological dimensions and their contributions to the advent of the individual and the emergence of the novel of formation (Bildungsroman).

"I have often tried to write myself a pass": A Systemic-Functional Analysis of Discourse in Selected African American Slave NarrativesPischel de Ascensao, Tobias 03 September 2004 (has links)
This dissertation uses a functional systemic approach to language to examine the construction of the respective first-person narrators of nine of the most popular, commercially successful and therefore influential African American slave narratives published between 1837 and 1862 (Roper, Grandy, Douglass, Brown, Bibb, Northup, Ball, Jacobs, Picquet). This corpus of more than 410,000 words was scanned for various linguistic features such as transitivity of verbs, nominalizations, and several syntactic features.
The texts chosen differ as to their methods of production. Some of them were written by the first person narrators themselves, while others were either extensively edited, dictated to an amanuensis, or in some other way controlled.
The dialectics of creation and representation through language results in the leading question in this study: how do the first-person slave narrators identify and create a personality for themselves through their texts? This dissertation thus focuses on the linguistic means by which the first-person slave narrator creates what is defined as a “discoursal self”, which helped the narrators to achieve one of their most important goals, namely, to be accepted as reliable.
The dissertation consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces a sociohistorical account of slavery, resistance against slavery, abolition, and the development of the slave narrative. The chapter shows that the African American slave narrative was not a completely new and original genre but an amalgamation of a variety of preexisting white and black literary forms.
The second chapter is more theoretical and deals with discourse, power, and ideology in the slave narrative. Chapter 3 approaches the language of the slave narrative. The small corpus of scholarly texts that tackle language and style in this genre is reviewed. As an alternative to these approaches, critical discourse analysis (CDA) according to Norman Fairclough is suggested. It eliminates the a priori categorization of specific linguistic features as stylistically significant, because it is based on a functional view of language that perceives linguistic expression as choice on various levels. Every choice is considered meaningful and, according to its presence, absence, or clustering in a given co-text, potentially stylistic. Michael Halliday’s systemic functional grammar is introduced as the basis for the ensuing text analysis. Chapter 4 introduces the first quantitative observations about the density and distribution of the first-person singular pronoun in the narratives. This characteristic is then placed in relation to syntactic condensation in the forms of ellipsis, finiteness and nominalization, all of which are reviewed quantitatively. Finally, this chapter introduces the system of transitivity according to Halliday, Matthiessen, and others. It explains the distinction between the individual process types and provides a quantitative overview of the individual transitivity profiles within each narrative.
Chapter 5 represents the main part of this dissertation. Each of the nine narratives is analyzed individually as to the presence of the I-pronoun in the text and the use and distribution of process types. In this way patterns of foregrounded or favored usages against absences of others emerge and contribute to the discoursal selves that the individual narrators present/construct of themselves. These preferred usages in general as well as in their local distributions are examined in detail. The quantitative observations supply the basis for further qualitative analyses derived from a large number of examples from the texts. Thus it is possible to show that each of the narratives is linguistically unique, which results in an individual construction of the respective I-narrator. The use of pronouns, process types and syntactic reconfigurations reveals how control over the activities as well as over the text is constructed, which can be directly related to issues of power.
The Summary provides a synopsis of the previous quantitative and qualitative analyses and associates the quantitative results with characteristics of written and oral texts in general. Finally, it thus becomes possible to rank the nine narratives on a cline between predominantly oral and chiefly written characteristics.

Paulus in gemeinschaft seiner Mitarbeiter: eine Untersuchung der Kollegialmission im Corpus Paulinum und in der Apostelgeschichte (Paul in the fellowship of his co-workers: a survey of Paul among his co-workers in the Corpus Paulinum and in Acts)Drews, Alexander 30 April 2006 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to illuminate the significance of what has been called the "coworkers"
for Paul's mission. At the same time it revises the traditional portrait of Paul as a
"lone ranger", not properly understood and appreciated by others. Thus the focus is on the
way in which Paul together with his co-workers as his missionary partners achieved the
various tasks of early Chrisian mission, namely the proclamation of the gospel and the
consolidation of churches. This phenomenon is best described with the German term
Kollegialmission, i.e. a mission carried by a team of colleagues.
A survey of research is followed by a detailed analysis of this phenomenon in the letters
commonly recognised as written by Paul himself. In additon to explicit statements on the
co-workers, attention is also given to implicit references, e.g. verb forms in the first person
plural which appear in some letters and contribute to understanding this Kollegialmission.
Then the same methodological procedure is applied to the disputed letters of Paul. A final
chapter examines the portrait of Paul and his co-workers in the Book of Acts.
This dissertation demonstrates that this understanding and practice of Kollegialmission
was a central point in Paul's mission and self-understanding. His co-workers receive their
commission and authority from God, to whom they are responsible. The gospel constitutes
the foundation for this cooperation between Paul and his co-workers. Thus the co-workers
perform the same duties as Paul himself, though his special apostolate remains in place.
The picture of the Kollegialmission in the Deuteropauline letters differs only slightly from
that of the letters generally recognised as Paul's own. As the author of Acts is mainly
interested in the person of Paul, his co-workers appear increasingly on the backstage as the
story unfolds. This examination closes with an application of some principles of Paul's
Kollegialmission to present day congregational ministry and mission work. / Theology / M.Th.
