Villkorad syskonkärlek : Om upplevelsen av att växa upp som biologiskt barn i familjehem / Conditional sibling love : regarding the experience of growing up as a biological child in foster homeBergelt, Lina, Hägglöf, Sara January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to provide knowledge on today's adult biological children's experiences of having grown up in foster homes and contribute with knowledge and understanding about whether societal support functions were in proportion to perceived needs. The study is based on a qualitative approach whose empirical evidence is obtained through semi-structured interviews. In total, we have interviewed eight informants. The empirical work was processed according to the approach of thematic analysis and resulted in a number of themes and sub-themes whose content was analyzed in relation to the theories Theory of family boundary ambiguity and ambiguous loss as well as the New sociology of childhood and to previous research on the subject of biological children in foster homes. The study shows that biological children in foster care's experiences need to be understood based on each individual's unique story, which has consisted of both benefits and challenges. The distinguishing feature of the result is the important and lasting relationships that all informants developed with some of the children placed in foster homes. Separations and risk of separations from children placed in foster homes created feelings of anxiety, fear and stress that some of the informants, as a result of a lack of support from adults, did not have sufficient opportunity to process and understand. The biological children’s access to participation, inclusion and information in matters concerning the foster children and the foster home assignment appear to be fundamental components for the assignment to be perceived as more or less positive or challenging. The results of the study also show the importance of the adults having knowledge of the biological children's potential needs and that they can relate to them in a flexible and responsive way. The support thus needs to be designed so that it is proportionate to the unique child's needs.

Utilizing dyadic brief gestalt play therapy within an unstable adolescent foster placementTerrapon, Wendy 11 1900 (has links)
In the experience of being a play therapist and social worker, the researcher became aware of the breakdown of adolescent foster placements. Although there are many causal factors of adolescent foster care breakdown, it was the treatment and sustaining of these placements that the researcher was interested in. The utilization of dyadic brief Gestalt play therapy aims to support the relationship between the carer and adolescent in order to sustain and stabilize the foster placement.
The empirical study includes data collection and analysis. The data was gathered through observations and field notes from unstructured interviews, in this case the dyadic therapeutic process with the adolescent and carer. The data was then analyzed, and eleven outcomes were discussed: the building of a therapeutic relationship, the process of dialogue, the gaining of awareness, contact, resistance, the internal working model, polarities, working in the here and now, the utilization of Gestalt experiments and Gestalt play therapeutic techniques. In addition, the implications of the brief Gestalt therapeutic model were identified. These themes are discussed fully in the final chapter encompassing conclusions and recommendations. This study found that it was possible to work effectively with the adolescent and carer in a dyadic brief Gestalt therapeutic way utilizing play therapy techniques. Recommendations regarding the conclusions were made in relation to the outcomes of this study. / Social Work / M.Diac. (Play therapy)

Exploring the feasibility of foster care as a primary permanency option for orphansThiele, Shelley 08 1900 (has links)
In the wake of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, welfare organisations in Vryheid situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal have noted dramatic increases in requests for foster care placements for orphaned children. In many instances, orphans have lived by private arrangement with extended families for several years. However, families are increasingly overwhelmed with the burden of overextending scarce resources, forcing them to seek welfare assistance.
Community-based responses to the crisis are regarded as top priority. This study examines literature regarding child care alternatives for orphans, focussing on foster care as the primary option. A study was conducted which explored community perceptions towards the local orphan crisis and foster care in particular. Findings revealed that although the adage 'Blood is thicker than water' still applies, foster care cannot stand alone. Alternate forms of care-giving need to be found to avoid plunging orphan care into further crisis. / Social work / M.A.(Social Science (Mental Health))

Exploring the causal factors of foster placement breakdownsBooysen, Sandra 30 November 2006 (has links)
During the researcher's work with looked after children for the past four
years, it became clear that adolescent placements were much more likely to
break down than others. Although there is some literature about foster
placement breakdowns, the researcher did not really get an answer as to the
causes of adolescent placement breakdowns. This study therefore explores
causal factors of adolescent placement breakdowns as seen by foster
carers, adolescents and professionals. It is evident from this study that there
are no easy answers. Although the adolescent, as much as any other child,
craves to belong, to be listened to and be respected, it seems that it is not
always possible for foster carers to put this into practice, given the
challenging behaviour that adolescents often display. Recommendations are
based on relevant literature and the empirical study, in the hope that it might
be useful to those with an interest in this field. / Social Work / M.Diac. (Play Therapy)
