There Will Be Blood: Southeast Asia as the Second Front on the War on Terror – A case study

International terrorism is a relevant and acute issue to deal with for most states across the globe. The horrors and fear of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 in New York and Washington left governments with new priorities and challenges to cooperate and coordinate efforts to combat terrorism. Governments in Southeast Asia have been faced with the threat of terrorism for several decades, although it has increased during the last decade. This case study sets out to trace and analyze terrorism in Southeast Asia from a neo-realist perspective. The first research question deals with the fact that the region is being referred to as the “second front” on the war on terror, or as a “terrorist haven”. Further, by using a neo-realist framework, an analysis of the situation and the actions of governments in the region will be provided. Finally, according to neo-realist theory, regional cooperation is only peripheral to the actual struggles of power and balancing that states are involved in. Yet the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is arguably an actor in combating terrorism in the region. Therefore, one of the objectives is to analyze these initiatives and to provide reflections for further action.

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis compares the Western response to two radical challenges in eras considerably removed in time: the 1900-1901 Boxer rebellion in China and today's Islamic terror. It brings a much-needed historical perspective to bear in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary Western conceptualization of the al-Qaeda and Taliban threat as a "clash of civilizations." It demonstrates that the current struggle against Islamic fundamentalism is not an altogether new challenge to Western interest and values. Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are in the end an expression of the same forces of resistance that also led to the origination of the Boxers in 19th century China. The cultural pressure that the West unavoidably developed by its imperialistic policy in the 19th and early 20th centuries was replaced by the penetration of the world with values, standards and symbols of the Western way of life and civilization in the course of globalization. The West ought to understand that the current terrorist threat is not "the next stage of history," as some scholars erroneously puts it, but a known historical phenomenon in a new form, for which neither the West nor other cultures bear the blame. / Major (GS), German Army

"Quasi eingebettet in die Schrift" Der doppelte Erzählboden popmoderner Oberflächenbeschreibung und der ästhetische Fundamentalismus in Christian Krachts Roman 1979

Cette mémoire est une analyse du subtexte immanent dans le roman « 1979 » (2001) de Christian Kracht, auteur suisse, qui est le plus connu pour son début « Faserland » (1995). Ces oeuvres sont situées dans le mouvement de la littérature Pop allemande des années 1990 et en résultent en même temps. Dans ce contexte, le climat socio-politique après la réunification, notamment le Literaturstreit, jouera un rôle important dans mon interprétation comme fond de la poésie de Kracht. J’exposerai les difficultés que le discours de la littérature Pop porte en ce qui concerne l’œuvre de cet auteur, qui, même s’il est vu en général comme fondateur de ce genre littéraire en Allemagne, ne considère pas ses textes comme littérature Pop dans ses déclarations notoirement problématiques. Je devrais objecter que Kracht est en combat avec la littérature Pop d’une façon stylistique et pas rarement ironique, ce qui traverse la définition étroite dominante. Il fait cela en adoptant sur l’un côté le trait le plus signifiant du genre, à savoir le caractère superficiel extrêmement descriptif et en transmettant sur l’autre côté un message moral profond, ce qui rend impossible la classification de ses textes comme Pop, signifiant seulement le divertissement ou l’archivisme de Moritz Bassler. En fait, la fréquence de signifiants de Pop dans les textes de Kracht créent par leur arrangement un réseau de sens qui, dans le paradigme post- moderne, peut être décrit le mieux avec le terme « rhizome » de Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari. En faisant ça, Kracht suit une autre tradition qui traverse les limites de la littérature Pop, comme il se sert de la décadence, de l’esthétisme et du symbolisme du fin-du-siècle d’un Hugo von Hofmannsthal, d’un Stefan George et d’un Joris-Karl Huysmans avec leurs pointes de mise en garde contre les déficits du modernisme, du libéralisme et du capitalisme, d’une façon nommée « fondamentalisme esthétique » par le sociologiste Stefan Breuer. Cette recherche se référera aux interprétations originales des textes source, aux évaluations de littérature d’accompagnement, à savoir des manuels scolaires en critique littéraire, en sociologie et en histoire allemande, aux comptes rendu, dissertations et entrevues et aux textes philosophiques. Cette mémoire est écrit en allemand. / This master's thesis is an analysis of the subtext immanent in the novel "1979" (2001) by Swiss author, Christian Kracht, who is best known for his debut, "Faserland" (1995). These works are situated in and result from the 1990's movement of German pop literature. In that context, the socio-political climate after the re-unification, most notably the Literaturstreit, plays an important role in my interpretation as the background to Kracht's poetics. I delineate the difficulties that the pop literature discourse carries both, as a literary category and in regard to this author's work, taking into consideration his notoriously problematic statements to the effect that he does not consider his texts to be pop literature, in spite of being commonly regarded as the founder of this literary form in Germany. I shall argue that Kracht engages in a stylistic and more often than not ironic play with pop literature, which transgresses the dominant narrow definition of it. He does so by adopting on the one hand its most-defining feature of extreme descriptive superficiality, yet by conveying on the other hand a moral message of profound dimensions, which renders impossible the classification of his texts as pop, neither in the sense of mere entertainment nor in the sense of Moritz Bassler’s archivism. In fact, the very arsenal of pop signifiers present in Kracht's texts create through their arrangement a web of meaning, which in the post-modern paradigm can be best described with Gilles Deleuze's and Félix Guattari's term “rhizome." By doing so Kracht follows in the footsteps of another tradition which transgresses the boundaries of pop literature, as he reaches back to the aestheticistic décadence and symbolism at the fin-de-siècle of a Hugo von Hofmannsthal, a Stefan George, and a Joris-Karl Huysmans, with their strong undertones of warnings against the shortfalls of modernism, liberalism, and capitalism, in a fashion that is termed “aesthetic fundamentalism” by Stefan Breuer. This research draws on original interpretations of the source texts, on evaluations of secondary literature such as scholarly works in German literary criticism, sociology and history, on book reviews, essays and interviews, and on philosophical texts. The thesis is written in German. / Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist der narrative Subtext im Roman 1979 (2001) des Schweizer Autoren Christian Kracht, der vor allem mit seinem Romandebüt Faserland (1995) bekannt wurde. Seine Texte stehen im Zusammenhang mit der Neuen Deutschen Popliteratur der 90er Jahre. In diesem Kontext hat auch das soziokulturelle Klima nach der Wiedervereinigung eine wichtige Rolle, das sich am prägnantesten im Literaturstreit äußerte, weshalb dieser in der hier vorgenommenen Intepretation von Krachts Poetik seinen Platz findet. Außerdem soll aufgezeigt werden, inwieweit die Neue Deutsche Popliteratur sowohl als gattungstechnische Kategorie als auch im Bezug auf Krachts Werk problematisch ist. Dies entspricht den Beteuerungen des Autors, dass er keine Popliteratur schreibe, obwohl er als ihr Gründer gilt. Das Argument dieser Arbeit ist, dass Kracht auf stilistische und oft ironische Weise mit Popliteratur spielt, wodurch er die bestehende enge Definition dieser transgressiert. Da er einerseits das bezeichnenste Merkmal von Popliteratur, nämlich die Oberflächenbeschreibung, übernimmt, andererseits aber dadurch eine tiefe moralische Aussage macht, lassen sich seine Texte nicht als Pop verorten,weder als Unterhaltung, noch im Sinne von Moritz Baßlers Archivismus. Vielmehr ergeben die von Kracht versammelten Pop-Signifikanten in ihrer Vernetzung ein Sinngebäude, das in postmoderner Parlanz mit Gilles Deleuze und Félix Guattari als „Rhizom“ bezeichnet werden kann. Indem Kracht so verfährt, knüpft er ebenfalls an eine Tradition jenseits von Popliteratur an, und zwar an die ästhetizistische décadence und den Symbolismus des fin de siècle eines Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Stefan George und Joris-Karl Huysmans, sowie deren Warnungen vor den Mängeln des Modernismus, Liberalismus und Kapitalismus, wobei diese Einstellung von Stefan Breuer als ästhetischer Fundamentalismus bezeichnet wird.

Trading strategies and endogenous asset price movement / Stratégies d'investissement et variation endogène de prix des actifs financiers

Nous étudions des stratégies d'investissement dont l'utilisation s'est généralisée sur les marchés financiers, et leur impact sur le prix des actifs et le risque de marché.Dans le premier chapitre nous nous intéressons aux stratégies de diversification de portefeuille. Nous montronsau travers d'un modèle théorique que si la diversification a un effet positif au niveau individuel pour l'investisseur,elle crée également des liens entre les différents investisseurs et titres, qui peuvent se révéler dangereux d'un pointde vue systémique. Nous mesurons les deux effets afin de discuter de la désirabilité globale de la diversification.Le second chapitre considère les stratégies d'investissement basées sur le groupement de titres financierspartageant certaines caractéristiques en différentes classes, ou styles. Nous postulons que ces stratégies créentun co-mouvement excessif entre titres d'un même style, qui seront vendus et achetés ensemble au sein d'une mêmeclasse. Appliquant cette intuition aux notes des agences sur les obligations, nous montrons qu'une obligation quichange de note se met en effet à varier comme sa nouvelle note, même quand les fondamentaux économiques ne lejustifient pas.Dans le troisième chapitre nous étudions trois types d'investisseurs opérant sur le marché des changes : les carry traders, les chartistes et les fondamentalistes. Notre modèle théorique suggère que l'interaction entre cestrois règles d'investissement peut expliquer la déconnexion bien documentée entre le taux de change et sa valeurfondamentale, ainsi que provoquer un effondrement endogène des taux de change. / We study how popular investment rules in financial markets may induce endogenous movements inasset prices, leading to higher market risk.In the first chapter, we focus on portfolio diversification. We show through a theoretical model that this strategyis beneficial at the individual investor level, but also creates endogenous links between assets and investors, whichcan be dangerous from a systemic perspective. We measure both effects in order to discuss the overall desirabilityof diversification.The second chapter considers strategies based on grouping assets that share common characteristics intodifferent classes, or styles. We postulate that these strategies create excess comovement between assets of asimilar style, as they are traded together as part of the same class. Applying this reasoning to bond credit ratings,we show that bonds joining a new rating class indeed start comoving more with the bonds of this rating, evenwhen fundamental factors suggest otherwise.In the third chapter, we study three investors who operate in the foreign exchange market: carry traders,chartists and fundamentalists. We provide a theoretical model which suggests that the interaction between thesetrading rules may explain the well documented exchange rate disconnect from its fundamental value, and lead toendogenous currency crashes.

Ashbel Green Simonton. At that time, even though the Roman Catholicism was disorganized and almost abandoned by the Roman Catholicism, it was powerful. The Presbyterian Mission started to be an option for the natives in Brazil. The Presbyterianism, in its long implantation process, development and structuring, was marked by successes and internal schisms. In 1888, the Presbyterianism became administratively independent, giving origin to the Presbyterian Church of Brazil. However, the Presbyterianism did not remain as a homogeneous Protestant movement. In 1903 the first schism appears in the Brazilian national environment, giving rise to the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil. Some years later, more precisely thirty seven years, a theological debate arouse inside of that church, which represented tendencies already existent. The essential issue that starts the rupture is The Doctrine of the Endless Punishment. Besides the above essential issue, this paper will present other aspects that indirectly contributed for the organization of the Conservative Presbyterian Church of Brazil; and as that Church consolidated herself in the national Protestantism environment. / A implantação do Protestantismo, particularmente do Presbiterianismo, em nossa Pátria foi iniciada pelo missionário Rev. Ashbel Green Simonton no ano de 1859. No quadro existente do século XIX, ainda que o Catolicismo romano estivesse desorganizado e quase na condição de abandono na Sé Romana, mesmo assim era a maior força religiosa. O Presbiterianismo de missão passa a ser um contraponto de opção para os patrícios. A trajetória do Presbiterianismo, no seu longo processo de implantação, desenvolvimento e estruturação, é marcada por sucessos e rupturas internas. Em 1888, o Presbiterianismo torna-se autônomo administrativamente, dando origem a Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil. Contudo, o Presbiterianismo não se mantém como um movimento protestante homogêneo. Em 1903, ocorre o primeiro cisma e assim surge, no cenário nacional brasileiro, a Igreja Presbiteriana Independente do Brasil. Passados alguns anos, mais precisamente trinta e sete anos, é deflagrado um debate teológico dentro daquela igreja. Os debates representam as tendências e as correntes já existentes ali. O elemento que desencadeia a ruptura é a chamada doutrina das Penas Eternas . Além da pedra de toque apresentada acima, a presente dissertação apresentará outros aspectos que indiretamente contribuíram para a organização da Igreja Presbiteriana Conservadora do Brasil; e como esta Igreja se consolidou no cenário do Protestantismo nacional.

Em 1903, um primeiro cisma fez surgir a Igreja Presbiteriana Independente do Brasil, que saía da Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil (Egreja Presbyteriana do Brasil). No final da década de 30 do século passado, um novo conflito, de ordem teológica, abalava o presbiterianismo nacional, dentro da IPIB. Desta feita, seu objeto e seus debates se centravam na doutrina das Penas Eternas , o que desembocaria, em fevereiro de 1942, em uma nova ruptura. No grupo de membros que agora deixava a IPIB havia duas facções: uma conservadora outra modernista ou liberal. Estes se organizaram a Igreja Cristã de São Paulo, de membresia intelectualizada e piedosa; aqueles formaram a Igreja Presbiteriana Conservadora do Brasil, naturalmente de cunho ortodoxo. Esta dissertação, após estudar estes atos e fatos, também trata da contribuição de alguns membros da ICSP à educação e cultura, especialmente como professores da Universidade de São Paulo.

The present work goes over how Taha’s interpretation differs from the Qur’an’s traditional reading whilst also discussing its insertion on the concept of liberal Islam and its impact. This work seeks to contribute with the body of researches related to liberal Islam in Brazil / Essa dissertação tem como objetivo analisar e contextualizar a obra A Segunda Mensagem do Islã de Mahmoud Muhammad Taha, publicada em 1967, no Sudão. Em 1985, Taha foi considerado culpado de apostasia, por suas ideias, e foi condenado a pena de morte. Analisaremos como sua interpretação do Corão discorda da leitura tradicional do Corão e também verificaremos sua inserção no conceito de Islã liberal e seu impacto. Pretendemos com esse trabalho contribuir com as pesquisas relativas ao Islã liberal no Brasil

The diversity of discursive strategies is investigated and/or communicative used by the print media journalistic to build this event, redefines facts. Being considered that such strategies look for to "capture" the reader and to do with that he identifies, starting from the enunciation contract, with certain interpretations of the facts, becomes essential a discursive analysis of the text (verbal and non-verbal) to understand that roads are trodden to exercise that "attraction". Besides the theories of critical discourse analysis, we supported in the works philosophical/sociological of Laclau, Baudrillard and i ek, to build the conductive threads of this work. For analysis of the texts, we adopted the critical analysis of discourse, starting from Norman Fairclough. Already the theories of more philosophical stamp (in some cases to multidiscipline, as of Laclau, Baudrillard and i ek), they went fundamental to examine the context of the political point of view, to know, of the discursive formations in search of the hegemony and of totalization over the action, involving positioning and ideologies in global reality. In that way, it was possible to guide the research second a critical positioning in relation to the print media. The analysis was divided in six thematic axes. They are them: globalization, terrorism, widespread war, exception state, fundamentalism and hegemony / Esta pesquisa investiga os modos de construção do Outro islâmico em revistas semanais impressas de circulação nacional CartaCapital, Época, IstoÉ e Veja -, tendo como "corpus" reportagens veiculadas em dois períodos distintos: 12 de setembro de 2001 a 31 de dezembro de 2001, meses que marcam o período compreendido entre o dia seguinte aos ataques aéreos contra os Estados Unidos e a posterior invasão do Afeganistão, que ocorreu em outubro de 2001; e 1 de março de 2003 a 30 de junho de 2003, meses que englobam períodos anterior e posterior à invasão do Iraque, que se deu em março de 2003. Investiga-se a diversidade de estratégias discursivas e/ou comunicativas utilizadas pela mídia impressa jornalística para construir esse acontecimento, ressignificando os fatos. Considerando-se que tais estratégias buscam capturar o leitor e fazer com que ele se identifique, a partir do contrato de enunciação, com determinadas interpretações dos fatos, torna-se essencial uma análise discursiva do texto (verbal e não-verbal) para entender que caminhos são trilhados para exercer essa atração . Além das teorias de análise crítica do discurso, nos apoiamos nas obras filosóficas/sociológicas de Laclau, de Baudrillard e de i ek, para construir os fios condutores deste trabalho. Para a exame dos textos, adotamos a análise crítica de discurso, a partir de Norman Fairclough. Já as teorias de cunho mais filosófico (e em alguns casos multidisciplinares, como a de Laclau, de Baudrillard e de i ek), foram fundamentais para examinar o contexto do ponto de vista político, a saber, das formações discursivas em busca da hegemonia e de totalizações dirigidas à ação, envolvendo posicionamentos e ideologias globalizadas. Dessa forma, foi possível orientar a pesquisa segundo um posicionamento crítico em relação à mídia impressa. A análise foi dividida em seis eixos temáticos. São eles: globalização, terrorismo, guerra generalizada, estado de exceção, fundamentalismo e hegemonia

<p>Anabaptiströrelsen som etablerades i Europa på 1500-talet var upphovet till många kristna samfund, bland annat mennoniterna. Jakob Amman grundade år 1693 amishrörelsen som är en utbrytargrupp från mennonitkyrkan. Under 1500- och 1600-talen fick amishanhängarna utstå kraftiga förföljelser, på grund av sina åsikter. Det ledde till att en stor emigration till Amerika ägde rum bland rörelsens anhängare. I dag påträffas amish i 22 av USA:s 52 stater. Amishkyrkan är organiserad i distrikt, varje distrikt är suveränt i förhållande till de övriga och omfattar ungefär 30-35 familjer. Varje distrikt har en biskop, två predikanter och en diakon. Biskopen är den som bestämmer i församlingen.</p><p>Amish lever efter guds anvisningar i bibeln. Det gör att medlemmarna lever väldigt enkelt. Teknologiska moderniteter som elektricitet, telefoner och bilar är förbjudet. Anhängarnas färdmedel är häst och vagn, som de skickligt manövrerar i trafiken. Anhängarna ser sitt arbete på gården som något glädjande. De är duktiga hantverkare, jordbrukare och hovslagare. Många försörjer sig med en mindre rörelse på gården där de säljer olika hemlagade saker. Mobila snickarteam bland männen är också vanligt.</p><p>Grunden till rörelsens tro är det tyska ordet Gelassenheit, som betyder underkastelse. Gelassenheit visar vilka attityder, värderingar, strukturer, symboler samt riter som är framträdande hos en person som präglas av Gelassenheit. Amishfolket har inte någon speciell kyrka utan har sina sammankomster i hemmen, varannan vecka. Tron regleras när det gäller praxis av Ordnung och när det gäller trosinnehåll av bibeln, Ordnung är grundstommen i det kristna livet och formandet av själva fromhetslivet. Amishrörelsens sakrament kan benämnas som livstidslöften och det är dopet, vigseln, kommunionen och ordinationen.</p>

Anabaptiströrelsen som etablerades i Europa på 1500-talet var upphovet till många kristna samfund, bland annat mennoniterna. Jakob Amman grundade år 1693 amishrörelsen som är en utbrytargrupp från mennonitkyrkan. Under 1500- och 1600-talen fick amishanhängarna utstå kraftiga förföljelser, på grund av sina åsikter. Det ledde till att en stor emigration till Amerika ägde rum bland rörelsens anhängare. I dag påträffas amish i 22 av USA:s 52 stater. Amishkyrkan är organiserad i distrikt, varje distrikt är suveränt i förhållande till de övriga och omfattar ungefär 30-35 familjer. Varje distrikt har en biskop, två predikanter och en diakon. Biskopen är den som bestämmer i församlingen. Amish lever efter guds anvisningar i bibeln. Det gör att medlemmarna lever väldigt enkelt. Teknologiska moderniteter som elektricitet, telefoner och bilar är förbjudet. Anhängarnas färdmedel är häst och vagn, som de skickligt manövrerar i trafiken. Anhängarna ser sitt arbete på gården som något glädjande. De är duktiga hantverkare, jordbrukare och hovslagare. Många försörjer sig med en mindre rörelse på gården där de säljer olika hemlagade saker. Mobila snickarteam bland männen är också vanligt. Grunden till rörelsens tro är det tyska ordet Gelassenheit, som betyder underkastelse. Gelassenheit visar vilka attityder, värderingar, strukturer, symboler samt riter som är framträdande hos en person som präglas av Gelassenheit. Amishfolket har inte någon speciell kyrka utan har sina sammankomster i hemmen, varannan vecka. Tron regleras när det gäller praxis av Ordnung och när det gäller trosinnehåll av bibeln, Ordnung är grundstommen i det kristna livet och formandet av själva fromhetslivet. Amishrörelsens sakrament kan benämnas som livstidslöften och det är dopet, vigseln, kommunionen och ordinationen.
