The 2016 Presidential Election: Contingencies, Fundamentals, and a Psychological Analysis of Favorability

Head, Jeb 01 January 2017 (has links)
This two part analysis looks at forecasting models in the United States' 2016 presidential election and breaks down the elections fundamental and contingency factors. This paper argues that political science forecasting models could be improved through a more localized approach and by utilizing additional contingency factors. The psychology study of this analysis explores the already established relationship between political conservatism and favorability ratings, as well as the relationship between perceived similarity between voter personality and candidate personality, referred to as personality mirroring, and favorability ratings. The study uses past research to suggest that these relationships for the 2016 presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, can be explained through mediating variables: leader effectiveness and trust. The study used participants recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for data, all adults who voted in the 2016 US presidential election. The study found that there was a full mediation of leadership effectiveness for Donald Trump and significant partial mediation for the other three explored relationships.

Evildoing : an attack on morality

Harrosh, Shlomit January 2010 (has links)
This thesis presents a comprehensive theory of evildoing as an attack on morality, grounded in objective morality. It introduces evildoing as a distinct category of immorality, arguing that it is the relationship of evil acts to the core of morality that distinguishes them from ordinary wrongdoing. Two projects are undertaken: to provide an account of morality that can ground a theory of evildoing that is both objective and capable of systematically accommodating the diverse phenomena and definitions of evil acts, and to articulate and defend the attack on morality theory of evildoing. The challenge of the first project is met by a minimalist account of morality, structured by what I call the fundamentals of morality. The thesis defends a particular substantive account of these fundamentals, underpinned by the idea of conatus as the end of morality. Ultimately, it is conatus as the striving to persist in existence and prosper inherent in human beings that justifies the objectivity of the fundamentals of morality and with it the objectivity of the theory of evildoing, for it is these fundamentals that are attacked when we speak of an ‘attack on morality.’ Specifying and defending the conditions necessary for such an attack is the task of the second part of the thesis. An act constitutes evildoing, or an attack on morality, when it is wrong, results in serious harm to others, originates in an intention based on the correct belief that the act will cause or risk such harm, and where the perpetrator’s mental states and/or the act’s consequences are antagonistic to the realization of morality via one or more of its fundamentals.

Subject Matter and Class Section as Factors in the Development of Personality Traits in College Students of Social Fundamentals

Wood, Joyce McKeever 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the present study is to determine whether subject matter and the class section are factors in the development of certain personality traits in college students of social fundamentals. Specifically, the purposes are: (1) to determine whether subject matter field and class section are factors in the development of personality traits referred to as objectivity, agreeableness, and co-operativeness; and (2) to determine which subject matter fields and class sections are responsible for group differences.

Algoritmické fundamentové obchodování / Algorithmic fundamental trading

Pižl, Vojtěch January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to apply methods of value investing into developing field of algorithmic trading. Firstly, we investigate the effect of several fundamental variables on stock returns using the fixed effects model and portfolio approach. The results confirm that size and book- to-market ratio explain some variation in stock returns that market alone do not capture. Moreover, we observe a significant positive effect of book-to-market ratio and negative effect of size on future stock returns. Secondly, we try to utilize those variables in a trading algorithm. Using the common performance evaluation tools we test several fundamentally based strategies and discover that investing into small stocks with high book-to-market ratio beats the market in the tested period between 2009 and 2015. Although we have to be careful with conclusions as our dataset has some limitations, we believe that there is a market anomaly in the testing period which may be caused by preference of technical strategies over value investing by market participants.

Model instability in predictive exchange rate regressions

Hauzenberger, Niko, Huber, Florian 12 1900 (has links) (PDF)
In this paper we aim to improve existing empirical exchange rate models by accounting for uncertainty with respect to the underlying structural representation. Within a flexible Bayesian non-linear time series framework, our modeling approach assumes that different regimes are characterized by commonly used structural exchange rate models, with their evolution being driven by a Markov process. We assume a time-varying transition probability matrix with transition probabilities depending on a measure of the monetary policy stance of the central bank at the home and foreign country. We apply this model to a set of eight exchange rates against the US dollar. In a forecasting exercise, we show that model evidence varies over time and a model approach that takes this empirical evidence seriously yields improvements in accuracy of density forecasts for most currency pairs considered. / Series: Department of Economics Working Paper Series

Omvårdnadsproblem hos patienter som genomgår avancerad bukkirurgi : En intervjustudie med sjuksköterskor på kirurgisk vårdavdelning

Erlandsson, Johan, Lindner Brundin, Emelie January 2019 (has links)
Background: Patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy may have extensive and complicated nursing needs with risk of complications. However, there is no research on the postoperative care at the surgical ward. Aim: The purpose was to describe, from the nurse's perspective, which nursing needs patients who had undergone CRS with HIPEC expressed and whether they received the nursing care they needed. Method: A descriptive qualitative interview study with semi-structured interviews with nurses (n = 12) was conducted on two surgical wards. Data was analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. Result: The analysis resulted in three categories: Physical nursing needs - complex to remedy and common with setbacks, To get the care adapted to individual needs and Psychosocial nursing needs are not met. The result showed that the most distinctive nursing needs in the patients were nausea, pain/anxiety and mobilization. During the care period, it was important that the nurse was responsive and that a good relationship between the healthcare staff and the patient was developed. The nurses described that patients had a need for more information and mental support. Conclusion: The results show that patients undergoing CRS with HIPEC have many nursing problems and the nursing care needs to be improved in several areas. A more structured and person-centered nursing could meet several nursing needs. This complex patient group should be cared for by nurses with professional experience and higher education, eg specialist nurses (surgical care). Further research should be conducted with patients who have undergone CRS with HIPEC as informants.

Era uma vez... uma aventura de (re)significação dialógica da prática educativa. / Once upon a time... dialogic\'s adventure meaning of educational practice.

Puga, Leonardo Fortunato 22 June 2018 (has links)
This study presents the issue of the authorship room occupied by the educational practice of the teacher and its forms of existence, it expressed in the (non-)harmonious relation social with the different \"others\" whichs he dialogues with the act of teaching functions for high school students.

No entanto, tais fundamentos que subsistem através dos princípios ali inseridos não podem ser vistos como coisas/objetos a serem utilizados a partir do pensamento dogmático que se torna explícito atrav / Bioethics, a neologism created in the 1970´s by Van Rensselaer Potter, as a branch of practical ethics, wants to assert itself as a new subject which establishes parameters to questions related to life, always expanding the social grounds for discussion whenever there is abuse, arising out of technical or scientific progress, to the detriment of human beings. Notwithstanding the principles inherent to bioethics itself, there are principles in the Brazilian Constitution that must be used in order to lay a foundation for decision making that envolves life, nontheless avoiding the possibility of one´s stating that there is an appropriation on the part of the judicial world of bioethics, but looking for and finding a way of making it effective through judicial arranging instead, and by so doing tutoring a legal right which no human being has the right to dispose of, which is life.
