This study investigates the responses of contemporary South African, Grade one children to threshold experiences in Grimm fairy tales and African Zulu folk tales. Thresholds involve an exciting or challenging experience, or a transformation in stories. Three stories from each genre were read over six sessions, to ten diverse black and white children, from one school. The children’s enjoyment was assessed, with focus on their backgrounds and previous knowledge, to help find beneficial reading for them. Results suggested that while gender of characters and story origins did not seem important, story length, humour, entertainment and educational ability, as well as personal involvement, were useful. The study supported the notion that stories are generally universal and could help bridge our cultural divide. Reader-Response theory was used and its principles helped to structure questions for the interviews, and to analyse data. Hopefully, the findings will help to select appropriate texts for all children beginning school in present-day South Africa.

The poetics of space is a very interesting field, which has been so far marginalized from the theoretic point of view in comparison with other types of the poetics of literary work. Fragmentary information devoted to this theme has often been hidden in theoretic works that applied the poetics of space to some specific literary works. To be able to start focusing myself on the poetics of space in fairy tales, I had to lay the basis for the poetics of space in the first part of my thesis. The basis is built by the chapters in which I was concerned with the poetics of literary work and where I collected, organized and made transparent actual theoretic information about the poetics of space and its parts, space and place. I used these chapters for the specification of the terms used in my thesis. That specification enabled me to focus on the poetics of space in the fairy tales in the second part of thesis. As my research material I chose Grimms' fairy tales and eight Erben's fairy tales. I used this material to verify the relevance of particular hypotheses. I argue that Guillermo Del Toro is a modern day storyteller, writing his film script as Ovid, The Grimms, or even Baum would pen their tales. I expand the idea of intertextuality to include not only conversations, thoughts, architecture, emotions, bodily activity, sounds, and innumerable other signifiers, but also analyzing the film "inter-imagically." By considering the film in this way it encourages a world conversation that can influence socio-political transformations in our world. I use the stories and images in myth, fairy tale and children's literature to support the importance of agency, agency in regard to finding your own voice, determining your own path and taking action by making choices that can ultimately result in transformations that are not only personal, but political ramifications in the world. In Echo and Narcissus, I explore issues surrounding the self-realization and loss of agency through Ofelia's refusal to follow someone else's path, allowing others to silence her voice or her potential. Using Little Red Riding Hood, I assert that Ofelia is the modern Little Red, refusing to take the path of her mother, defining her own way. Using The Wizard of Oz, I highlight the labyrinth of choice and the determination to return, restore or transform Ofelia's world. I further proclaim Del Toro is a master storyteller along the lines of Ovid, Grimm and Baum and that through his film, he inspires adults to get back in touch with the childhood disobedience and questioning in order to spark a world conversation that just may transform the world around us.

Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Kinderliteratur als Wertevermittler. Durch Märchen werden Kindern moralische Werte vermittelt, die ihre Identitätsentwicklung beeinflussen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, ausgewählte neu bearbeitete Märchen der Kinder- und Hausmärchen der Brüder Grimm zu analysieren und mit den Originalmärchen hinsichtlich der darin behandelten und vermittelten Themen und Werte zu vergleichen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die folgende Frage: Welche strukturellen und inhaltlichen Veränderungen werden vorgenommen und welche Themen, Normen und Tugenden werden durch die Veränderungen vermittelt? Um der Fragestellung dieser Arbeit nachzugehen, soll eine Handlungsanalyse sechs ausgewählter Neuinterpretationen der KHM der Brüder Grimm durchgeführt werden. Zuerst wird der Handlungsverlauf jedes Märchen nach einem dreistufigen Muster zusammengestellt. Danach werden die Handlungsverläufe analysiert hinsichtlich Themen und vermittelter Werte. Die enthüllten Themen und Werte der Neubearbeitungen werden schließlich mit einander und mit den drei Originalmärchen der Brüder Grimm verglichen. Die Relevanz des Themas dieser Arbeit ergibt sich daraus, dass Kinderliteratur ein Teil des Sozialisationsprozesses des Kindes ist, der wiederum stark von den Normen und Werten der zeitgenössischen Gesellschaft abhängig ist.

This diploma thesis deals with a comparison of works of German and Czech fairy tale authors. The two cultures are represented by the Brothers Grimm and by K. J. Erben. Fairy tales of these authors are analysed from an intercultural point of view. Since each culture has different features, fairy tales of these cultures are written in a different form, as well. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on expert literature on intercultural communication and on the topic of fairy tales. Further sources include literature on the Brothers Grimm and on K. J. Erben. In the practical part, five fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and five fairy tales of K. J. Erben are analysed and compared. This analysis and comparison represent the core of this thesis, with four different fairy tales chosen of each author and one fairy tale describing the same story.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vilka adaptioner som gjorts från folksagan om Askungen skriven av bröderna Grimm (2016) till två bilderböcker under samma namn skrivna av Disney (2015) och Jansson & Jensfelt.(2018). Studien undersöks genom en komparativ analys där arbetet jämför skillnader mellan bröderna Grimms (2016) folksaga och de två bilderböckerna vid samma namn skrivna av Disney (2015) och Jansson & Jensfelt (2018). Studien undersöks även genom en strukturanalys där de olika texternas skeden och uppbyggnad granskas.

I den här uppsatsen gör jag en komparativ analys av bröderna Grimms version av folksagan Snövit, Disneys film Snövit och de sju dvärgarna och en av Disneys senaste filmer, Frost. Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att undersöka hur bilden av prinsessor har förändrats över tid, det vill säga vilka skillnader och likheter det finns mellan de kvinnliga karaktärerna. Fokus ligger alltså på Snövit i folksagan Snövit, Snövit i filmen Snövit och de sju dvärgarna och Elsa i filmen Frost. Analysen visar att när folksagan Snövit adapteras till film ändrades handlingen en del, filmen är mer barnvänlig och många scener är borttagna och ersatta med andra. Filmen precis som sagan handlar dock om Snövits skönhet och om drottningens avundsjuka. Snövit och de sju dvärgarna är Disneys första färglagda långfilm och Frost är en av de senaste. Förändringen av prinsessorna är stor. Snövit är passiv och klarar sig på grund av andra. Elsa är en självständig kvinna som klarar sig på egen hand, vilket speglar hur kvinnosynen förändrats.

In this particular research project the narratives and experiences of parents within reconstituted families have been the subject of reflective thought, alluding to the possible influence of the classic fairy tale or fable on these experiences. Aspects which were touched on in the research included the general validity of discussions on parenting experiences in reconstituted families, while reflecting on these parents’ ability to confide and relate their experiences openly and frankly in a society where the nuclear family is often seen as the ‘ideal family’. Cognisance was taken too of the possibility that parents were reticent in voicing their experiences so as not to enforce prevalent generalisations. Furthermore, research was undertaken to examine alternative parenting narratives and methods by which these narratives could be heard so as to minimise misconceptions and labels on parenting in reconstituted families. Detta självständiga arbete behandlar två olika versioner av berättelsen Snövit och syftet med arbetet är att se vilka skillnader som skett när man adapterar en kort äldre folksaga i bokformat till en familjefilm. Sagan som behandlas är bröderna Grimms klassiska folksaga om Snövit (1981, som är översatt från en utgåva år 1913-14. Första utgåvan publicerades år 1812 i Kinder- und Hausmärchen). Filmen som behandlas är Walt Disneys första välkända långfilm, som kom ut år 1937. Den går istället under namnet Snövit och de sju dvärgarna. Båda berättelserna kommer att beskrivas med en narrativ metod eftersom uppsatsen analyserar hur respektive medier behandlar karaktärer och miljöer samt använder en komparativ metod för att se hur dessa förhåller sig till varandra. Utifrån jämförelsen kommer vi också att diskutera begreppen adaption och transformation, för att sedan undersöka vilken term som är mest lämplig när det gäller relationen mellan verken. Utvalda delar från Lgr 11 kommer också att användas i detta arbete för att undersöka hur de två verken går att använda utifrån ett pedagogiskt syfte för årskurserna 1-3.

I vår uppsats jämför vi bröderna Grimms sagor Snövit, Askungen och Törnrosa med Walt Disneys adaptioner av dessa.I de flesta utgivna sagohistorier skildras den kvinnliga karaktären på två olika sätt där det goda möter det onda. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka, reflektera och framhäva hur de angivna karaktärerna framhävs och hur detta bemöts av läsaren. Detta för att ta reda på hur de olika verken skiljer sig i framställning av dessa karaktärer samt hur detta mottages och påverkar läsaren/tittaren Vi diskuterar vidare den roll dessa framställningar har för barns identitetsskapande samt hur vi som lärare kan arbeta med dessa verk för att synliggöra stereotypa könsmönster.Vår komparativa studie kommer i huvudsak bestå av en djupgående analys av karaktärer baserad på litteratur, vetenskapliga artiklar, artiklar, examensarbeten och filmer.Resultatet visar en tydlig polarisering av karaktärerna i de angivna sagohistorier, där de ofta kategoriseras som antingen goda eller onda. Detta leder till att läsaren kan behöva välja sida vilket i de flesta fall medför att läsarens sympatiserar med det goda. Det finns dock risker som medföljer denna kategorisering, såsom de ouppnåeliga normerna som en flicka förväntas agera som i sin tur kan leda till blandade känslor av dålig självkänsla och otillräcklighet.
