Identification of common and unique stress responsive genes of Arabidopsis thaliana under different abiotic stress through RNA-Seq meta-analysis

Akter, Shamima 06 February 2018 (has links)
Abiotic stress is a major constraint for crop productivity worldwide. To better understand the common biological mechanisms of abiotic stress responses in plants, we performed meta-analysis of 652 samples of RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) data from 43 published abiotic stress experiments in Arabidopsis thaliana. These samples were categorized into eight different abiotic stresses including drought, heat, cold, salt, light and wounding. We developed a multi-step computational pipeline, which performs data downloading, preprocessing, read mapping, read counting and differential expression analyses for RNA-Seq data. We found that 5729 and 5062 genes are induced or repressed by only one type of abiotic stresses. There are only 18 and 12 genes that are induced or repressed by all stresses. The commonly induced genes are related to gene expression regulation by stress hormone abscisic acid. The commonly repressed genes are related to reduced growth and chloroplast activities. We compared stress responsive genes between any two types of stresses and found that heat and cold regulate similar set of genes. We also found that high light affects different set of genes than blue light and red light. Interestingly, ABA regulated genes are different from those regulated by other stresses. Finally, we found that membrane related genes are repressed by ABA, heat, cold and wounding but are up regulated by blue light and red light. The results from this work will be used to further characterize the gene regulatory networks underlying stress responsive genes in plants. / Master of Science / Abiotic stress is a major constraint for crop productivity worldwide. The action of dependants from a comparative and an African perspective

Mokotong, Matshilane 10 1900 (has links)
The available sources on the dependency action in South Africa do not mention the presence or absence of traditional values. This study was prompted by a simple curiosity to discover the traditional legal values of the dependency action for loss of support. Accordingly, the study critically examines the action of dependants for loss of support and other related losses in South Africa, Botswana and Lesotho from an African perspective. It then compares this to its application in Australia, a country that is known for its recognition and inclusion of indigenous Australian customary law. The study recommends that traditional values should be preserved in the records of the legal system, as it might stimulate a discussion, which could lead to the culmination of a single dependency action tailored to fit the whole nation and all its different cultures and religions. / Private Law

Cross-border cooperation of urban regions in the Baltic Sea area

Schönweitz, Magdalena 22 October 2015 (has links)
Based on the assumption that the Baltic Sea Region is primarily composed of cities and urban areas, this study explores the evolution and development of the cross-border cooperation of large urban areas in the Baltic Sea Region. Using post-structuralist theoretical approaches supplemented with governance theory, the study develops a comprehensive theoretical tool for the analysis of three cases of cross-border cooperation of urban areas in the Balitc Sea Region. The conceptual idea was to safeguard comparability through the application of a common set of open research questions, rather than to apply a set of pre-given criteria. First, this piece of research provides the three single case studies of the Oresund Region, the Gothenburg-Oslo Region and the Euregio Helsinki-Tallinn. Then a comparative analysis elaborates on the commonalities and differences and derives supporting factors for cross-border cooperation based on that background. Finally, the comparative analysis also points to three additional relevant aspects for the development of cross-border cooperation that have not been included into the theoretical approaches but which had remarkable influence on the development of the single cases: geographical localisation, timing and marginalisation.

Sub-optimal Energy Management Architecture for Intelligent Hybrid Electric Bus : Deterministic vs. Stochastic DP strategy in Urban Conditions / Architecture de gestion de l'énergie sous-optimale pour les bus électriques hybrides intelligents : stratégie basée DP déterministe versus stratégie basée DP stochastique en milieu urbain

Abdrakhmanov, Rustem 27 June 2019 (has links)
This PhD thesis proposes Energy Management Strategies conceived for a hybrid electrical urban bus. The hybrid control system should create an efficient strategy of coordinating the flow of energy between the heat engine, battery, electrical and hydraulic motors. Firstly, a Deterministic Dynamic Programming (DDP) based approach has been proposed: simultaneous speed and powersplit optimization algorithm for a given trip (constrained by the traveled distance and time limit). This algorithm turned out to be highly time consuming so it cannot be used in real-time. To overcome this drawback, an Optimal Profiles Database based on DP (OPD-DP) has been constructed for real-time application. Afterwards, a Stochastic Dynamic Programming (SDP) technique is used to simultaneously generate an optimal speed profile and related powersplit strategy. This approach takes into account a stochastic nature of the driving behavior and urban conditions. The formulated energy optimization problem, being intrinsically multi-objective problem, has been transformed into several single-objective ones with constraints using an ε-constraint method to determine a set of optimal solutions (the Pareto Front). In urban environment, due to traffic conditions, traffic lights, a bus encounters frequent Stop&Go situations. This results in increased energy consumption during the starts. In this sense, a relevant Eco Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go (eACCwSG) strategy brings the undeniable benefit. The algorithm smooths speed profile during acceleration and braking phases. One more important feature of this algorithm is the safety aspect, as eACCwSG permits to maintain a safety distance in order to avoid collision and apply a smooth braking. As it was mentioned before, smooth braking ensures passengers comfort.

Measures of Implicit Self-Esteem. Psychometric Properties and the Prediction of Anxious, Self-Confident and Defensive Behavior

Rudolph, Almut 02 October 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The dissertation consists of an introduction and three empirical journal articles. The introduction gives the theoretical background about self-esteem and its assessment with indirect measures, and primarily, integrates the three journal articles. The first article investigates the reliability and convergent and discriminant validity of indirect measures of self-esteem. The second article complements the examination of the psychometric properties. It contributes evidence to the predictive validity of indirect self-esteem measures. With using non-self-reported criteria, a double dissociation between explicit and implicit self-esteem is tested. The third article brings into focus an applied aspect of personality psychology. It is analyzed how defensive reactions are related to self-esteem discrepancies, that are different combinations of explicit and implicit self-esteem.

Testing the seams of the American dream : minority literature and film in the early Cold War

Burns, Patricia Mary 26 September 2011 (has links)
Testing the Seams of the American Dream: Minority Literature and Film in the Early Cold War delineates the concept of the liberal tolerance agenda in early Cold War. The liberal tolerance message of the U.S. government, the Democratic Party, and others endorsed racial tolerance and envisioned the possibility of a future free from racism and inequality. Filmmakers in often disseminated a liberal message similar to that of the politicians in the form of “race problem” films. My shows how these films and the liberal tolerance agenda as a whole promises racial equality to the racial minority in exchange for hard work, patriotism, education, and a belief in the majority culture. My first chapter, “Washing White the Racial Subject: Hollywood’s First Black Problem Film,” performs a close reading of Arthur Laurents 1946 play Home of the Brave, which features a Jewish American protagonist, in conjunction with a reading of the 1949 film version, which has an African American protagonist. The differences between the two texts reveal the slippages in the liberal tolerance agenda and signal the inability of filmmakers to envision racial equality on the big screen. “The American Institution and the Racial Subject,” my second chapter, discusses the 1949 film Pinky as well as Américo Paredes’s George Washington Gómez and Monica Sone’s Nisei Daughter. All of these works suggests that the attainment of education promises entry into the mainstream by racial minorities, yet Paredes and Sone question this process by interpreting it as resulting in the dual segregation of their protagonists. My third chapter, “Earning and Cultural Capital: The Work that Determines Place,” looks at the promise that with hard work anyone can attain the American Dream. I show how the 1951 film Go for Broke!, Ann Petry’s The Street, and José Antonio Villarreal’s Pocho work to dispel this American myth. My final chapter, “The Regrets of Dissent: Blacklists and the Race Question,” examines the 1954 film Salt of the Earth alongside Chester Himes’s If He Hollers Let Him Go and John Okada’s No-No Boy to reveal the dangerous mixture of race and dissent in this era. / text

An electrophysiological examination of visuomotor activity elicited by visual object affordances

Dixon, Thomas Oliver January 2016 (has links)
A wide literature of predominantly behavioural experiments that use Stimulus Response Compatibility (SRC) have suggested that visual action information such as object affordance yields rapid and concurrent activation of visual and motor brain areas, but has rarely provided direct evidence for this proposition. This thesis examines some of the key claims from the affordance literature by applying electrophysiological measures to well established SRC procedures to determine the verities of the behavioural claims of rapid and automatic visuomotor activation evoked by viewing affording objects. The temporal sensitivity offered by the Lateralised Readiness Potential and by visual evoked potentials P1 and N1 made ideal candidates to assess the behavioural claims of rapid visuomotor activation by seen objects by examining the timecourse of neural activation elicited by viewing affording objects under various conditions. The experimental work in this thesis broadly confirms the claims of the behavioural literature however it also found a series of novel results that are not predicted by the behavioural literature due to limitations in reaction time measures. For example, while different classes of affordance have been shown to exert the same behavioural facilitation, electrophysiological measures reveal very different patterns of cortical activation for grip-type and lateralised affordances. These novel findings question the applicability of the label ‘visuomotor’ to grip-type affordance processing and suggest considerable revision to models of affordance. This thesis also offers a series of novel and surprising insights into the ability to dissociate afforded motor activity from behavioural output, into the relationship between affordance and early visual evoked potentials, and into affordance in the absence of the intention to act. Overall, this thesis provides detailed suggestions for considerable changes to current models of the neural activity underpinning object affordance.

POLÍTICAS DE REGULAÇÃO NA EDUCAÇÃO: UMA ANÁLISE DA ORGANIZAÇÃO DA ESCOLA EM CICLOS EM GOIÂNIA NO PERÍODO DE 1998-2008 / Policies of regulation in Education : An analysis of the school s organization in cycles in Goiânia within the period of 1998 and 2008

MUNDIM, Maria Augusta Peixoto 07 August 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T15:13:47Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese Maria Augusta.pdf: 220257 bytes, checksum: f3d0757a399b6862ca3785ee818c2722 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Linked to the State and Educational Policies Research Line of the Post-graduation Program in Education of Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), the organization of schools in cycles in Goiânia is analyzed in this thesis from the perspective of the processes of regulation of the educational policies undertaken in Brazil, starting mainly in the 1990 s. Based on the analyses of the social regulation carried out on the economy field and the political sociology and having as reference the methodological-theoretical frame developed by Marks and fertilized by Gramsci, it was aimed to understand the constitutional determinations of the organization of the school in cycles in Goiânia and questioned in which way they correspond to the processes of regulation of the educational policies or, in the other hand, they can mean a counterpoint to the hegemonic processes of regulation in progress. The investigation in local extent demanded, in addition to the bibliographic research, a process which involved document analysis, interviewing and applying questionnaires in 15 schools. The data obtained from the questionnaires received statistics treatment through the electronic program SPSS - Statistical Package for The Social Sciences. Taking the organization of the school in cycles as a policy in the strict meaning of the state s action, that is, as a policy of the government, it should be considered that it is also found, in higher or lower degree, submitted to the ways of regulation of the policies forged on the lato of the State s action. Thus, the organization of scholarity in cycles in Goiânia can be understood as a policy doubly delimited by regulating processes. As a counterpoint to the organizations in series model, the main changes instituted in the evaluation s extent refer to the variation on the meaning of failing and the introduction of alternatives as regrouping, mobility, rejoining groups or maintenance of some steps. Within the curriculum extent, the speech that it is necessary for the structure to be flexible seems widely absorbed and reaffirmed on the curriculum organized by objectives, by generating theme and work projects, among other methodologies adopted. Inserting new forms and mechanisms of control over the management and organization of work; the emphasis on collective work; the intensification, complexification and teachers work overload have resulted in demand for teachers increasingly more flexible and indicate changes in management and organization of work extents. The organization of schools in cycles in Goiania s educational public schools is a policy whose regulation was expressed by the contradictory movement of flexibilization, which included moments of deregulation/ regulation throughout the period examined. However, what has emerged is that the soothing of flexibilization has not ceased production processes that were made conventional by being called failure at school and for the reasons why more complex forms of social regulations are needed.
