Hugh MacDiarmid and Sorley MacLean: modern makars, men of lettersWilson, Susan Ruth 11 January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation, Hugh MacDiarmid and Sorley MacLean: Modern Makars, Men of Letters, transcribes and annotates 76 letters (65 hitherto unpublished), between MacDiarmid and MacLean. Four additional letters written by MacDiarmid’s second wife, Valda Grieve, to Sorley MacLean have also been included as they shed further light on the relationship which evolved between the two poets over the course of almost fifty years of friendship. These letters from Valda were archived with the unpublished correspondence from MacDiarmid which the Gaelic poet preserved. The critical introduction to the letters examines the significance of these poets’ literary collaboration in relation to the Scottish Renaissance and the Gaelic Literary Revival in Scotland, both movements following Ezra Pound’s Modernist maxim, “Make it new.” The first chapter, “Forging a Friendship”, situates the development of the men’s relationship in terms of each writer’s literary career, MacDiarmid already having achieved fame through his early lyrics and with the 1926 publication of A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle when they first met. MacLean, on the other hand, was a recent university graduate, young teacher, and fledgling poet when he began to provide translations of eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century Gaelic poetry for MacDiarmid to versify in English with the odd Scots or Gaelic word. This assistance was essential to MacDiarmid’s compilation of The Golden Treasury of Scottish Poetry, which he wished to be representative of Scotland’s literary traditions in Scots, Gaelic, English, and Latin. The work resulting from MacDiarmid and MacLean’s literary collaboration further reinforced MacDiarmid’s credibility as a nationalist poet well versed in each of these traditions. Chapter two, “Cultural Nationalism – Politics and Poetry” discusses the significance of each writer’s stance on language in relation to Scottish literature and explores their success in avoiding the ideological antagonisms which plagued the literary and language revivals in early twentieth-century Ireland. “Modern Makars” scrutinizes MacDiarmid and MacLean’s renderings of several Gaelic poems in The Golden Treasury, particularly in relation to the implications of the term “translations”. The final chapter, “Epistolary Discourse and the Legacy of the Letters” sums up the significance of MacDiarmid and MacLean’s collaboration and long-standing friendship, as revealed through their letters, and addresses these writers’ subsequent influence on both writing and cultural life in Scotland. The letters are followed by two appendices. Appendix A includes a transcription of Michael Davitt’s interview with Sorley MacLean for the Irish journal Innti in 1986 wherein MacLean discusses such issues as his political views, the influences on his poetry, and his relationship with MacDiarmid. The interview is provided in its original Irish text and accompanied by a translation into English. Appendix B is a transcription of the Times Literary Supplement’s 4 January 1936 review of MacDiarmid’s translation of The Birlinn of Clanranald as it was originally published in The Modern Scot. Sorley MacLean served as the ghost writer of MacDiarmid’s response to this critique of his work. This research, conducted both here in Victoria and in Edinburgh, Scotland, provides the first book-length study of the literary collaboration of these influential Scottish poets and the first critical discussion of their collected letters.

Nana Yaa Asantewaa, The Queen Mother of Ejisu: The Unsung Heroine of Feminism in GhanaWiafe Mensah, Nana Pokua 01 January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the life story of Nana Yaa Asantewaa and its pedagogical implications for schooling and education in Ghana and Canada. Leadership role among women has been a topic in many debates for a long period. For many uninformed writers about the feminist struggles in Africa, Indigenous African women are docile bodies with little or no agencies and resistance power. However, the life history of Nana Yaa Asantewaa questions the legitimacy and accuracy of this misrepresentation of Indigenous African women. In 1900, Yaa Asantewaa led the Ashanti community in a war against the British imperial powers in Ghana. The role Yaa Asantewaa played in the war has made her the legend in history of Ghana and the feminist movement in Ghana. This dissertation examines the traits of Yaa Asantewaa and the pedagogic challenges of teaching Yaa Asantewaa in the public schools in Ghana and Canada.

ABSTRACT
This thesis presents a study about the golden grass (capim-dourado) craftwork of the Mumbuca Quilombola Community, in Tocantins state, and its adaptations to design as reported by the craftswomen. Aesthetic components of the intrafamilial craftwork and product creation for the city’s window displays were highlighted. The research method included a survey of research around the theme, direct interaction with the interlocutors, interviews and observation. Given the evidence, polylogic theory (teoria polilógica) was used as an investigative path by considering craftwork to be an example of representation of knowledge with various logics, in transit, being constituted and involved in multiple meanings. Among these, the craftswomen were able to present their opinions regarding how they see themselves and analyze their practices in the contemporary world. Their talks were organized so as to reveal significant aspects that involved projection, adaptation, exhibition and authorization of that which has become the relationship between the craftswomen of Mumbuca and the craftwork produced for the market. Their opinions demonstrated points that touch upon the production of the current golden grass craftwork, which involves their relationship with the government of the state of Tocantins, designers, businesspeople, middlemen, and people from the region. It was found that golden grass craftwork, aesthetically placed into the global market, has been reinvented in the hands of craftswomen. At the same time, there are problems due to difficulty accessing the raw material, which has raised the question of the continuity of this practice in Mumbuca.

Proměny a adaptace mýtu o Amorovi a Psyché v literatuře / Transformation and Adaptation of the Cupid and Psyche Myth in LiteratureFauknerová, Anna January 2018 (has links)
Diploma thesis Bc. Anna Fauknerová (2018) Transformationand Adaptation of the Cupid and Psyche Myth in Literature Abstract This thesis deals with the myth of Cupid and Psyche. It is concerned with the version of the myth found in Apulei's novel The Golden Ass as well as in other works such as fairy tales and novels. Some of these other works refer to the myth directly while others' connections to it have not been established and they merely demonstrate similar motifs. The first part of the thesis deals with Apuleius and his text The Golden Ass, which is the oldest surviving version of the myth of Amor and Psyche. The main characteristics of the myth as well as its characters, the story and the meanings that are hidden in it are examined. The character of Psyche and the way her heroism manifests itself are examined in greater detail. The second part of the thesis compares the myth with three fairy tales and three novels based on the conclusions of the previous chapter. The greatest emphasis is placed on the development and adaptation of individual motifs, similarities and disimilarities in content and form and on the way in which the myth is reflected in literature. The third part of the thesis looks at three possible ways of interpreting the myth. Keywords: Cupid, Psyche, myth, fairy tale, motif of light...

Corollary of the rural exodus and the industrialization, a focus on the local heritage and on the regional area emerges in France at the end of the 19th century. This concern manifests itself through the regeneration and the dynamism of journals intended for new social groups yearning for cultural activities. Prefiguration of the magazine, these journals contribute, inside of French Regions, to the definition of the regional identities. They enable the expansion of the making of heritage, previously limited to history, literature and philology, and its democratization, thanks to the valorization of popular traditions, to the private practice of the areas (tourism, environment) et to its esthetical approach. They also seek the individualization of a so far communal relation to territories. Finally, they rejuvenate a conception of heritage based on legacy and atavism, in favor of a more modern concept of chosen heritage, especially in the context of escaping daily life.

Previous issue date: 2013-03-08 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The present work focused on developing teaching activities that would provide to the student
in initial teacher training, improving the ability of mathematical reasoning and hence a greater
appreciation of the concepts related to the golden section, the irrational numbers, and the
incommensurability the demonstration from the reduction to the nonsensical. This survey is
classified itself as a field one which data collection were inserted within a quantitative and
qualitative approach. Acted in this research, two classes in initial teacher training. These were
teachers and employees of public schools and local governments, living in the capital, in
Natal Metropolitan Region - and within the country. The empirical part of the research took
place in Pedagogy and Mathematics courses, IFESP in Natal - RN. The theoretical and
methodological way construction aimed to present a teaching situation, based on history,
involving mathematics and architecture, derived from a concrete context - Andrea Palladio s
Villa Emo. Focused discussions on current studies of Rachel Fletcher stating that the architect
used the golden section in this village construction. As a result, it was observed that the
proposal to conduct a study on the mathematical reasoning assessment provided, in teaching
and activity sequences, several theoretical and practical reflections. These applications,
together with four sessions of study in the classroom, turned on to a mathematical thinking
organization capable to develop in academic students, the investigative and logical reasoning
and mathematical proof. By bringing ancient Greece and Andrea Palladio s aspects of the
mathematics, in teaching activities for teachers and future teachers of basic education, it was
promoted on them, an improvement in mathematical reasoning ability. Therefore, this work
came from concerns as opportunity to the surveyed students, thinking mathematically. In fact,
one of the most famous irrational, the golden section, was defined by a certain geometric
construction, which is reflected by the Greek phrase (the name "golden section" becomes
quite later) used to describe the same: division of a segment - on average and extreme right.
Later, the golden section was once considered a standard of beauty in the arts. This is
reflected in how to treat the statement questioning by current Palladio s scholars, regarding
the use of the golden section in their architectural designs, in our case, in Villa Emo / O presente trabalho teve como foco desenvolver atividades de ensino, que proporcionassem,
interior do estado.
A constru??o do caminho te?rico e
racioc?nio l?gico e investigativo e demonstra??o matem?tica.
racioc?nio matem?tico.
alunos pesquisados, o pensar matematicamente.
