Internationalization of a Health Care Organization : An Empirical Study on Gambro

Jech, Martin, Magnani, Federico, Freitas, Rute January 2007 (has links)
The international marketer is challenging new factors in the present globalized world. Such marketer has often to solve conflicts resulting from different laws, cultures and societies, and overcome a variety of constraints when entering or establishing foreign markets. Entering and establishing new markets is a complicated process affected by both, external and internal factors. To be successful in new markets, said marketers must formulate market entry strategy with regard to those factors. This paper was written with the purpose to investigate the relationship between relatedness of core business and business regarding the market in question, government policies and regulations, and entry strategy of companies entering the U.S. renal services market. We have carried out the exploratory research based mainly on secondary data obtained from annual reports from 1995 to 2005. The one case study on the Swedish health care company Gambro was conducted in order to formulate hypotheses, which can be proven in prospective research. The whole paper is written in the context of PSE market entry model developed by Anders Pehrsson. Based on the analysis we suggest that if the perception of barriers is low and the relatedness between core business and business regarding market in question is high, companies prefer a non-organic growth when entering the market.

Love that turns into terror: Intimate partner violence in Åland : nurses’ encounters with battered women in the context of a government-initiated policy programme

Häggblom, Anette January 2008 (has links)
Violence against women is a problem in all countries in the world, including the small autonomy of the Åland Islands. The violence ranges from psychological threats to femicide. In the Åland Islands the issue has been placed on the agenda of politicians and the authorities, while reports about severe violence against women have been brought to the public. In Åland no scientific research on violence against women has been performed. The overall aim of this dissertation is to gain a deeper insight into how battered women in Åland are cared for by nurses, and how the official organizations have responded to the government policy directives. In this thesis, the first study, a descriptive survey, describes how nurses identify and support battered women. In the second and third studies, the method of grounded theory was used to explore the experiences and perceptions of nurses and battered women of violence against women. In the fourth study a case study approach was used to explore government policies for intimate partner violence. The main findings in this thesis are that battered women used health services to receive help. We found that nurses identified and supported abused women, even though services for these women were inadequate. Nurses were willing to help the women, but they often lacked support. Battered women reported that they received ad hoc help. They were often left alone, dependent on a nearby person to escape, survive, and recover. Another finding was that the Government of the Åland Islands demanded that the official organizations should allocate services to battered women, but the organizations’ response to the directives had some limitations. From a public health perspective, the phenomenon presents an urgent challenge. Overall, the public health community can and should contribute greatly towards the understanding, prevention, and control of violence by applying and adapting already constructed principles, and by implementing strategies.

Audiência pública para o licenciamento ambiental de instalações nucleares: uma visão crítica / Public hearing for environmental permit of nuclear facilities: a critical view

VASQUES, LUCIANA G. 11 November 2016 (has links)
Submitted by Claudinei Pracidelli (cpracide@ipen.br) on 2016-11-11T10:58:51Z No. of bitstreams: 0 / Made available in DSpace on 2016-11-11T10:58:51Z (GMT).

Importancia de las Startups para el desarrollo económico de los países / Importance of Startups for the economic development of countries

Moreno Lázaro, Patricia Liliana, Vidalón Rios, Manuel Mathias 07 March 2021 (has links)
This research work has the purpose of investigating the relevance of startups as dynamic agents for the development of incipient economies. For this reason, we seek to determine the useful value of startups in the financial development of incipient economies through bibliographic research of academic articles. In our study, we review some definitions and scopes of startups. We also determine the main characteristics of incipient economies and explain the main contributions of startups. In addition, we determine the financial relevance and impact of startups in these types of economies. The scope of our study addresses the advancement of the use of technology and innovation where an important growth of startups as business alternatives is observed. In recent years, startups have developed business models for solving social problems. However, incipient economies face some challenges to these changes, due to insufficient government policies, lack of business support, among others, for the creation of startups. This paper contributes to the limited current literature on the role of startups in developing economies and opens a debate on the real impact of startups on the economic development of countries. Finally, it is proposed that future research deepen this discussion and thereby build a theoretical framework that provides value to the decision-making of future entrepreneurs. Another contribution is to provide relevant information to those responsible for government policies to promote entrepreneurship in incipient economies. / Trabajo de Suficiencia Profesional

The Effects of Government Policies on Real Estate Sector

Kouki, Tuuli January 2018 (has links)
The study investigates the linkages between government policies and the real estate sector via a case study that was carried out on the Japanese market. The applicability of the results were then discussed in terms of whether similar trends could be seen in other economies facing similar demographic and economic issues as Japan. While the real estate sector linkages with the overall economy are relatively well studied topic, there are less studies regarding the links between government policies and the real estate market. The studies in the field furthermore in general conclude that the results are country and location dependent, thus illustrating there to be a research gap. Given that real estate sector is linked with the overall performance of the economy, and fluctuations within the sector can magnify ups and downs of the overall economy, it is of importance to investigate the topic in order to, for example, illustrate the effect that policy changes will have on the real estate sector and thus potentially also on the overall market. The approach of the study was to carry out quantitative analysis through the use of econometric analysis methods such as cointegration and Granger causality. The robustness of the econometric analysis results were then further discussed through the use of qualitative analysis tool of expert interviews. The applicability of the econometric results to other economies was analyzed with simple comparison of key variables. The results of the study indicate that government policies have very little effect on the real estate sector. The econometric analysis suggests that neither monetary nor fiscal policy had notable effect on the real estate sector, especially price development. On the other hand, interest rates were seen as a most notable government policy tool to have an effect on the real estate sector in the expert interviews. As a conclusion, it was argued that the low level of cointegrations and lack of causalities could be due to government policies having an indirect effect on the real estate market via altering the demand and supply for real estate rather than leading to changes within the sector directly. For the comparison, some of the Nordic countries and Germany were noted to be facing similar issues as Japan in terms of ageing population, urbanization trend, notable government debt levels, and low interest rates. It was however noted, that the econometric analysis results could not be mirrored to these markets directly due to the rather straightforward comparison, but rather the results could act as a guideline.

The label 'terrorist' : PKK in Turkey

Seloom, Muhanad January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines how the ‘terrorist’ label affects those that are labelled by this designation, particularly with reference on a subsequent choice to use violence in the context of an ethno-nationalist conflict. Drawing on the PKK as a case study, the study asks: what effect did the labelling of the PKK as a ‘terrorist organisation’ by the Turkish government have on the use of violence by Kurds in the Turkish-Kurdish ethno-nationalist conflict? The invocation of the label terrorist in any conflict often means both the labeller and the labelled are predisposed to use violence. This study argues that this process of labelling leads the labeller and the labelled to frame one another as an existential threat. To date, the effects of using the label ‘terrorist’ in an ethno-nationalist conflict context remain relatively understudied in both social and political sciences. The period under analysis extends from 1992 to 2015, corresponding to the period during which the Turkish government continuously designated the PKK as ‘terrorist’. In conflict discourse, belligerents use demeaning labels against each other to gather support, legitimacy or simply to increase combatants’ morale. The study argues that the label terrorist is a constituent element of the conflict. The Turkish government uses the label terrorist as a tool to securitise the Kurdish-Turkish ethno-nationalist conflict. The Turkish government’s labelling of the PKK as ‘terrorist’ places the Kurdish issue in the broader framework of securitisation, a theory in International Relations. While securitising the Kurdish issue has bestowed more powers to the Turkish government to combat violence described as ‘terrorist’, the resolution of the ethno-nationalist conflict became increasingly more complex leading to protracted waves of violence. Analysing data collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with Kurds from Turkey, the study reveals that the impact of the label terrorist is far more complex than previously assumed in the existing academic literature. The specific effects of the label terrorist on any given conflict, however, are the subject of an empirical question to be settled through rigorous research. Drawing on the Labelling Theory of Deviance fathered by Howard S. Becker and complemented by discourse analysis, this study finds that the application of the label terrorist against the PKK increases the perception of victimization among its wider Kurdish community. Secondly, the research demonstrates that the invocation of the label terrorist against the PKK places the group’s actors and sympathizers in a situation that makes it harder for them to engage in peaceful means of resolving the conflict. The interplay between these two consequential effects of victimisation and political exclusion leads to the conclusion that there is an indirect relationship between designating an ethno-nationalist armed group ‘terrorist’ and the choice to use violence.

No. of bitstreams: 1 TELMA VIEIRA LIMA.pdf: 779948 bytes, checksum: 10da779db2040b3e2b5d9aa4db8032e3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-02 / The present work analyses the process of constitution of Insikiran Nucleus and the Intercultural Undergraduate course created by this Nucleus, as part of the government policies settled in Brazil, since the promulgation of the Federal Constitution in 1988. It aims to apprehend in which way the principles of interculturalism, specifics, differentness and bilingualism, which are references for the most important legislations and Indian school education policies, have been developed in the Intercultural Undergraduate course created by Insikiran. The Indian College Degree in Roraima offered by UFRR is promoting the college graduation to Indian population, in order to enable them to teach in the State's Indian schools. It has been also necessary to apprehend which procedures were put into motion by the subjects involved with the Insikiran Nucleus constitution, as well as to analyze the experience developed in UFRR, through the Intercultural Undergraduate course, that points out the possibility of democratization of the access and the incorporation of new forms of knowledge to college education, starting from the demands and articulation with social movements. The idea is to present and discuss, in one hand, how that action legitimates the UFRR, and in the other hand, how the University articulates itself with a wide variety of institutions and social movements, such as the Indian movement, in order to make this experience a solid one, and in which measure this relationship is able to create new spaces and news ways of producing knowledge. Some categories borrowed from social sciences were used as tools to develop this analyze, such as different citizenship, multiculturalism and national minority.

HERITAGE CONSERVATION POLICY IN THE AGE OF TOURISM: DEVELOPING FRAMEWORKS FOR CONSERVATION, MANAGEMENT, AND SUSTAINABILITY IN PHILIPPINE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS - THE CASE OF THE CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, PAMPANGA

Ivan Anthony Santos Henares (11778923) 03 December 2021 (has links)
<p>With the increased role of local authorities in creating cultural policy, gathering information on how successful and sustainable local heritage conservation programs are established will be very valuable in crafting future policies. This dissertation investigated the development of local government heritage conservation policies in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga in the Philippines in order to determine (1) predictors of community support for heritage conservation policy – why communities support heritage conservation policy and what characteristics or elements of communities lead them to support heritage conservation policies, (2) factors that lead to the adoption and implementation of heritage conservation policies or policy drivers of heritage conservation policy, and (3) given the deeper understanding of community support and policy drivers, the relationship between these predictors and drivers with heritage conservation policy management and sustainability. It did this by being cognizant of the lack of homogeneity across communities, with actors, factors, contexts, and nuances specific to each community.</p><p>Implementing two component studies, the dissertation used mixed methods, which interprets and integrates information drawn from the combined strength of both quantitative and qualitative data, following the convergent design (Creswell and Plano Clark, 2018; Harrison et al., 2020) and guided by the Rigorous Mixed Methods framework (Harrison, Reilly and Creswell, 2020). This first study used a self-administered online survey to collect data from stakeholders and ordinary residents of the City of San Fernando, Pampanga which was analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). In the second study, guided by the naturalist paradigm (Guba and Lincoln, 1982; Lincoln and Guba, 1985), transcripts of semi-structured interviews conducted by City Tourism and Investment Promotion Office (CTIPO) were coded and analyzed using the grounded theory approach. It combined several coding approaches, specifically a blended approach (Skjott Linneberg, and Korsgaard, 2006), with the the Gioia Methodology (Gioia et al., 2012) and Ünlü-Qureshi instrument (Qureshi and Ünlü, 2020)</p> <p>The integration of qualitative and quantitative data and results was guided by the dimensions of the mixed methods research integration trilogy (Fetters and Molina-Azorin, 2017). The dissertation identified predictors for community support for heritage conservation policy, policy drivers of the heritage conservation policy process, and the relationship between these predictors and drivers and within the heritage conservation policy process and produced three models: (1) predictors of community support for local heritage conservation policy, (2) heritage conservation policy drivers, and (3) managerial implications for heritage conservation policy sustainability, and a framework for heritage conservation, management, and sustainability. The data suggested that in the case of San Fernando, (1) knowledge and awareness, (2) sense of belonging and attachment, (3) place image and community identity, and (4) evaluation of value are predictors of support for heritage conservation policies, with evaluation of value as a mediator for the first three. It also identified two major policy drivers: (1) good governance, and (2) heritage consciousness, and six specific policy drivers: (1) understanding the dynamics of heritage conservation, (2) addressing program sustainability, (3) stakeholder integration in the policy process, (4) appreciation of process-oriented governance, (5) manifesting pride and attachment, and (6) awareness of long-term outcomes of policies, that serve as factors leading to the adoption and implementation of heritage conservation policies. The predictors and policy drivers were incorporated into a single framework for heritage conservation policy management and sustainability.</p>

An Historical Perpsective On the Academic Education Of Deaf Children In New South Wales 1860s-1990s

Crickmore, Barbara Lee January 2000 (has links)
This is an historical investigation into the provision of education services for deaf children in the State of New South Wales in Australia since 1860. The main focus is those deaf children without additional disabilities who have been placed in mainstream classes, special classes for the deaf and special schools for the deaf. The study places this group at centre stage in order to better understand their educational situation in the late 1990s. The thesis has taken a chronological and thematic approach. The chapters are defined by significant events that impacted on the education of the deaf, such as the establishment of special schools in New South Wales, the rise of the oral movement, and aftermath of the rubella epidemic in Australia during the 1940s. Within each chapter, there is a core of key elements around which the analysis is based. These key elements tend to be based on institutions, players, and specific educational features, such as the mode of instruction or the curriculum. The study found general agreement that language acquisition was a fundamental prerequisite to academic achievement. Yet the available evidence suggests that educational programs for most deaf children in New South Wales have seldom focused on ensuring adequate language acquisition in conjunction with the introduction of academic subjects. As a result, language and literacy competencies of deaf students in general have frequently been acknowledged as being below those of five their hearing counterparts, to the point of presenting a barrier to successful post-secondary study. It is proposed that the reasons for the academic failings of the deaf are inherent in five themes. / PhD Doctorate
