Keep Calm and Play On: The Effects of Grit, Mindfulness, and Goal Orientation on Sport Anxiety and PerformanceAuerbach, Alex 08 1900 (has links)
Achievement motivation theory suggests there are two primary approaches to achievement tasks: to appear competent or to develop a skill. These two different approaches to performance yield different affective and behavioral responses. Athletes holding a performance goal orientation tend to respond to challenges with behaviors exemplifying learned helplessness and increased anxiety. Athletes holding a mastery goal orientation tend to respond to challenges with greater effort and experience less sport-related anxiety. Individual athlete factors, such as grit, mindfulness, and achievement orientation may influence how athletes experience their environment and their levels of sport anxiety, and may interact with athletes' achievement motives to influence performance. I used hierarchical multiple regressions to test the main effects of feedback and mindfulness, and feedback and goal orientation, to determine if either mindfulness or goal orientation moderated the effects of feedback on performance. I also used simple regression to determine the relative predictive strength of mindfulness, grit, and goal orientation on athletes' experience of sport anxiety. Mindfulness, but not goal orientation, was a significant moderator of the feedback-shooting performance relationship, but particularly for athletes low in mindfulness; mastery-goal orientation, independently of feedback, was also a significant predictor of task performance. Mindfulness also emerged as the strongest predictor of reduced sport anxiety. These results suggest that, for athletes low in mindfulness, mastery-involving feedback may be especially helpful. Further, mindfulness may also reduce athlete's sport-related concentration disruption, worry, and somatic anxiety.

Glass recycling is an alternative to the impact caused by its disposal in environment, contributing to preservation of natural resources, reduction in gas emissions and decrease in volume of landfills and dumps. Glass can be recycled endlessly without any loss of mass or its properties. In addition, stands out for its beauty, for being one of few materials capable of reflecting light, the implementation of which may result in high aesthetic appeal products. This research aims to develop glass pastilles for coatings by recycling process of sodium-calcium glass residues, from heat treatment studies of melting and annealing. Initially, glasses were separated by color, manually grinded, distinguished into different granulometries and conditioned in cellular concrete molds. Then were subjected to different heat treatments, which resulted in melting and annealing, the latter process to minimize the internal tensions that weaken glass. Thus, it sought to analyze the influence of grain size and thermal treatments of visual aspects of the pieces; studies of materials of molds and their interaction with glass, demoldability and finish of the tablets; equipment used for comminution of the glass. As a result, it defined the heat treatment four (TT4) for colorless glass and heat treatment five (TT5) for tinted (blue, amber, light green, dark green) in seeking to obtain pieces of wrinkled texture, glassy and glossy surface. About heat treatment, the analysis performed by optical microscopy showed elimination of internal stresses which weaken the glass, and impact test showed a greater shock resistance for samples annealed, confirming thus its effectiveness. As for viability of production, results showed that pastilles are likely to be made by CAVI group, artisanal scale, using technologies and resources accessible to the group, in a perspective of social technology.

Vztah kvality života a psychické odolnosti a vytrvalosti u hráčů parahokeje a vozíčkářského rugby / Relationship of quality of life and hardiness, relisience and grit in parahockey and wheelchair rugby playersJiskrová, Markéta January 2020 (has links)
anglicky Objectives: This thesis aims to investigate whether we can predict the general and sport- specific quality of life of athletes with physical disabilities based on selected positive psychological constructs (resilience, hardiness and grit). Method: Forty players of para ice-hockey and wheelchair rugby (of which only two were women) underwent this study. The data were obtained by a questionnaire, compiled by Professor Martin from Wayne State University, which contains six parts: general information, life satisfaction, grit, resilience, sports engagement and hardiness. The "translation and reverse translation" method was used to translate the questionnaire. We used the statistical program IBM SPSS 2200 to analyze the obtained data. Results: Life satisfaction can be best predicted on the basis of hardiness (R = 0.686), but also resilience (R = 0.496) and grit (R = 0.340). We can predict sports engagement only based on resilience (R = 0.374). We recommend searching for other possible positive constructs that could better predict sports engagement. Key words: quality of life, sport engagement, life satisfaction, resilience, hardiness, grit, para ice hockey, wheelchair rugby

The Influence of Selected Non-Cognitive Factors in The Flourishing and Intention to Quit Studies of Working Students at A University in the Western CapeAmadi, Winston Aligbaso January 2020 (has links)
Magister Commercii (Industrial Psychology) - MCom(IPS) / Working students encounter challenges and responsibilities at university and work. In attempting to study the books and chapters assigned, meet assignment deadlines, take part in extracurricular activities and function at work, working students may be overwhelmed sensing inadequate time to complete all their responsibilities. These may lead to certain negative outcomes for the working student, such as languishing, poor grades, taking longer than the expected time to complete studies or, in the worse scenario, quitting their studies. The primary aim of this study was to examine and understand the influence of non-cognitive factors (including PsyCap, time management, and grit) on flourishing and the working students’ intention to quit employing correlational and hierarchical regression analysis. The secondary objective was to make recommendations to universities and organisations on how to aid working students to develop or increase non-cognitive factors to ensure their flourishing and a reduced intention-to-quit studies. A non-probability sampling technique indicating, convenience sampling and purposive sampling were employed to recruit respondents. Respondents had to be working students (part-time students). The sample included 194 respondents (n = 194) from a university in the Western Cape. The survey instrument included a biographical questionnaire, the academic PsyCap questionnaire, mental health continuum - short form (MHC-SF) questionnaire, Grit-Perseverance of effort subscale, the time management short-range planning subscale, and a self-developed intention-to-quit questionnaire. Numerous studies confirmed the validity and reliability of these instruments. The relationship amongst the non-cognitive variables (PsyCap, grit and time management), flourishing and intention-to-quit studies were assessed through Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression analysis. The non-cognitive variables had a positive relationship with flourishing and a negative relationship with intention-to-quit studies. PsyCap was established to explain the largest proportion of the variance in flourishing and intention-to-quit studies. This is consistent with the findings of studies with similar variables. Recommendations were made for lecturers, counsellors, and university officials to collaborate to incorporate programmes that will aid in developing these non-cognitive variables into the university’s curriculum.
