Automatiserad symboltestning i det grafiska gränssnittet på Gripen NG / Automated testing of symbols in the graphical interface in Gripen NG

Saab är i slutfasen av utvecklingen av Gripen Next Generation och söker därför en metod för att autonomt kunna regressionstesta symboler i det grafiska gränssnittet i cockpit. Detta examensarbete fokuserar på att utvärdera befintliga metoder av automatiserad GUI-baserad testning för att automatiskt kunna jämföra det grafiska gränssnittet på en skärm och implementera den mest lämpade metod för att ta fram ett bevis av koncept. Målet med implementationen är att kunna visa att metoden kan hitta de problem som kan uppstå vid mjukvaruuppdateringar och försäkra att ingen uppdatering av mjukvara påverkar symbolerna i det grafiska gränssnittet på ett negativt sätt. Implementationen är en metod av Visuell GUI Testning vilket är den tredje generationen av automatiserad GUI-baserad testning och har gjorts i C++ med OpenCV bibliotek för bildhantering och bildjämförelse. Det testmaterial som använts är i form av bilder och en video som insamlats med en intern funktion för skärminspelning i det grafiska gränssnittet. Slutsatsen av resultatet från testerna som genomförts visar att det är möjligt att verifiera statiska symboler i det grafiska gränssnittet men att verifiering av dynamiska symboler kräver vidare arbete då förutsättningarna för identiska tester inte är möjligt i dagsläget. / Saab is in the final phase of development of the new Gripen Next Generation and is therefore looking for a method to autonomously test the graphical interface in the cockpit for visual regressions. This thesis evaluates existing methods of automated GUI-based testing to automatically compare the graphical interface on a screen and implement the most suitable method to produce a proof of concept. The goal of the implementation is to show that the method can solve the problems that can arise in software updates and ensure that no software updates adversely affect the symbols in the graphical interface. The implementation is a method of Visual GUI Testing which is the third generation of the automated GUI-based testing and has been made in C++ with OpenCV-library for image recognition and comparison. The test material that has been used is images and videos collected with an internal screen recording function in the graphical interface. The results indicate that it is possible to verify static symbols in the graphical interface, yet that verification of dynamic symbols require further work as the conditions for identical test are not possible in the current situation.

The presentation of the search result information has become more important ever since the rapid development and use of smartphones. This thesis investigated what makes search engine result pages efficient and effective on the smartphone screen. For this thesis an experimental study of Karolinska Institutet’s search solution was executed. Three different versions of Karolinska Institutet’s search engine result pages were developed, by researching potential features that would improve the effectiveness and efficiency. The developed versions were compared to the original search engine result pages through experiments with students from Karolinska Institutet. The quantitative results showed no statistical significance of improvement in effectiveness or efficiency. The qualitative results indicated that categories and summary texts are preferable features in a search GUI in a smartphone. Thus the results were indecisive, the author reflects and provides ideas on how to achieve clearer results. / Hur man presenterar sökresultat har blivit allt viktigare i och med dagens av smarttelefoner. Det här arbetet undersökte vad som gör sökresultatssidor effektiva när man använder en smarttelefon. I arbetet utfördes en experimentell studie av Karolinska Institutets söklösning. Tre olika versioner av Karolinska Institutets smarttelefonsgränssnitt utvecklades genom att undersöka potentiella \emph{features} (funktioner, egenskaper) som förbättrar effektiviteten. De olika utvecklade versionerna jämfördes mot det original som Karolinska Institutet använder idag. Detta gjordes genom experiment med studenter från Karolinska Institutet. De kvantitativa resultaten kunde inte visa på någon statistisk signifikant effektivitetsförbättring. De kvalitativa resultaten pekade på att kategorisering och summeringstexter är föredragna features i ett sökgränssnitt i smarttelefonen.

Comparison of GUI test automation strategies in a Clearing System : A case study at Nasdaq Stockholm AB

The effectiveness of GUI-based automated tests is a topic that is often discussed in the testing community. As software systems and GUIs are getting more advanced, the testing of these systems may sometimes be both time-consuming and repetitive. Therefore, automated tests are used more frequently to create more agile working and to decrease the number of manual tests. There is an ongoing discussion about the benefits and shortcomings of implementing automated GUI test compared to performing manual GUI tests. Increasingly, companies today are implementing automated GUI tests, yet relatively few are analyzing enough when choosing their test strategy. The purpose of this thesis was to explore different test strategies in a system as complex as Nasdaq’s clearing system NRTC. The first strategy used manual GUI tests, while the second strategy used a test tool called Selenium WebDriver to automate the GUI tests. Hopefully, this research will contribute to the already accumulated knowledge about automated GUI tests and potentially help in choosing the right testing strategy. The findings of this research showed that the implementation time of manual tests was much faster, and that implementing automated test would be timeconsuming. The reason for this is that the GUI was not very testable, making it difficult to create the test scripts. In addition, the was a difference in runtime when using both strategies. The automated tests only took a couple of seconds to execute, compared to the manual tests that took a couple of minutes. After both strategies was investigated, an analysis was done by looking at the effectivity, maintainability, robustness, and the overall results to be able to find benefits and shortcomings. In conclusion, GUI automation cannot replace manual test completely. By not including the human capabilities, the testing process becomes very limited.

Utveckling av Kalibreringsstation för Temperatursensorer för Biacore / Development of Calibration Station for Temperature Sensors for Biacore

Cytiva i Umeå producerar medicinskteknologisk utrustning och ett av dessa system som produceras är Biacore. Dessa system används inom läkemedelsutveckling och forskning inom proteinanalys. De temperaturgivare som används i Biacore ska kalibreras noggrant då det är viktigt att det inte blir några mätfel. Målet med detta examensarbete är att utveckla nuvarande kalibreringsstationen för temperaturgivare eftersom den har blivit omodern. Fokuset ligger mest på att utveckla en ny mjukvara, dock potentiell utveckling av hårdvaran är också av intresse. Mjukvaran ska beräkna kalibreringsfaktorer för de temperaturgivare som kalibreras på ett automatiserat och effektivt sätt. Utveckling av hårdvaran kan göras genom att byta ut nuvarande referenstermometern till en ny och integrera den i kalibreringsstationen. Ett program har utvecklats med ett användargränssnitt där användaren väljer vilken typ av temperaturgivare som kalibreras och dess identifikationsnummer. Baserat på denna information hittar programmet alla relevanta filer med mätvärdena, beräknar kalibreringsfaktorer för varje temperaturgivare och sparar resultatet. Detta automatiserar beräkning och sparande av data samt effektiviserar kalibreringsprocessen. Utvecklingen av mjukvaran gjordes med kodspråket Python och biblioteket Tkinter. Hårdvaruutvecklingen har påbörjats men inte uppnåtts på grund av tidsbrist. / Cytiva in Umeå manufactures medical technological equipment. One of those systems that are produced is Biacore. Those systems are used in drug development and research in protein analysis.The temperature sensors that are used in Biacore systems must be accurately calibrated since it is of high importance to avoid errors in the measurements. The goal of this thesis is to improve current calibration station since it has gotten outdated. The focus is going to lie mostly on developing the software, although the potential development of the hardware is of interest as well. The software should be able to calculate the calibration factors for each of the temperature sensors that are calibrated in an automated and an effective way. The development of the hardware can be done by upgrading current reference thermometer to a new one and integrate it in the calibration station. A program has been developed with a user interface where the user choses what type of thetemperature sensor is to be calibrated and its identification number. Based on this information the program finds all the relevant files with the measured values, calculates calibration factors for each of the temperature sensors and saves the result. It automises calculation and saving of data as well as makes the calibrating process more effective. Development of the software was done by using Python programming language and Tkinter library. Development of the hardware has been started but was not achieved due to the lack of time.

Omkring 10% av befolkningen lider av defekt färgseende. De flesta, upptill 99%, av dessa är röd-grön färgblinda. Den sista procenten delasmellan totalt färgblinda och de med gul-blå färgblindhet. I studienidentifieras riktlinjer för hur färgsättning av diagram och kurvor ska görasför att även de med någon av de nämnda typerna av defekt färgseende skakunna tillgodogöra sig informationen i till exempel diagram. Baserat påteorier, samt egen personlig erfarenhet skapades bilder på färgsattakurvdiagram anpassade för personer med röd-grön färgblindhet. Dessahar testats och utvärderats av informanter som lever med den typen avdefekt färgseende. Detsamma gäller för skapandet av bilder för de medblå-gul färgblindhet. En färgsättning med enbart grundfärgerna gul, rödoch blå tillsammans med svart visade sig fungera för båda typerna avdefekt färgseende. Dessa färger tillsammans med svart mot en vitbakgrund ger inte bara ett tydligt intryck utan är också estetiskttilltalande.Genom att göra olika markeringar av linjerna i form av olika typer avsträckningar eller punkter, kan lätt fler än fyra kurvor finnas i sammadiagram. I studien presenteras möjliga färgkombinationer ochförklaringar kring varför de fungerar ihop. Detta bör vara tidsbesparandeoch kostnadseffektivt vid färgsättning av diagram likväl som webbsidoroch grafiska användargränssnitt mm. This study identifies how correct use of colors will makesure that people suffering from any of the above-mentioned types of defective colorvision conditions will be able to assimilate the information given in, for example, adiagram. Based on theories, as well as personal experience, images were created oncolored curve diagrams adapted for people with red-green color blindness. These havebeen tested and evaluated by informants living with that type of defective colorvision. The same applies when it comes to the creation of the pictures for thosesuffering from blue-yellow defective color vision.A color scheme using only the primary colors yellow, red and blue together withblack proved to work for both types of defective color vision. These colors togetherwith black on a white background not only give a clear impression but are alsoaesthetically appealing. By making different markings of the lines in the form ofdashed lines or dots, more than four curves can easily be found in the same diagram.The study presents possible combinations of colors and explanations to why theywork together. This should be time saving and cost effective when coloring diagrams and also when for example coloring webpages and graphical user interfaces. The tipsand ideas given by the informants how to further facilitate for the persons sufferingfrom defective color vision is also found in the report.

This thesis explores the digital opportunities at a mobile workplace in elderly home care by analyzing the existing information and communication flow that happens between and during shifts in everyday practice using a user-centric approach. The fieldwork analysis reveals that a combination of media, both verbal, digital and paper-based is used throughout the shift to pick up and pass on information. With an ageing population that requires care from home, to sustain and improve the quality of care, my research indicates an evident need of supporting home care workers whilst being out of office.The research question is: “How might we decrease the amount of information lost between and during night shifts through implementing a digital alarm register?” which evolved from one out of four design opportunities.The main participants and focus throughout this study are the end-users, night shift home care workers at two different locations in the Malmö municipality. By involving the users early in the process, having a rich fieldwork process and putting emphasis on “support” rather than “replacement” resulted in a mobile application tool presenting relevant patient information, current alarms and alarm history.

Säkerhet och användbarhet beskrivs ofta som motpoler. I detta examensarbete så undersöks möjligheterna till att inkorporera både säkerhet och användbarhet i ett passagekontrollsgränssnitt. Forskningen är fokuserad på den del av passagekontrollen som benämns som händelseloggen. Loggens ändamål är att lagra och presentera information om händelser som sker i övervakade entréer. Syftet med forskningen är att undersöka i vilken utsträckning det är möjligt att implementera användarkrav och samtidigt uppfylla säkerhets- och användbarhetsheuristik. En klassisk interaktionsdesignsprocess utförs. Semi-strukturerade intervjuer genomförs med respondenter från två olika målgrupper, för att kontrollera om deras behov skiljer sig åt. Den ena gruppen består av användare som primärt jobbar med säkerhetsrelaterade arbetsuppgifter medan den andra gruppen har säkerhet som sekundär arbetsuppgift. Svaren analyseras genom en tematisk analys. Analysen resulterar i fyra olika teman innehållandes 26 stycken användarkrav. Användarkraven och heuristiken tas i beaktning när en prototyp skapas. Prototypen utvärderas sedan genom en heuristisk utvärdering av experter. Resultatet av denna forskning tyder på att användarkrav bidrar till att uppfylla heuristik. Utöver detta, så visar det sig att de två målgrupperna, på flera punkter, har olika behov. Användarkrav som härstammar från den första gruppen anses vara mer dynamiska och omedelbara, medan den andra gruppen har krav som är desto mer statiska och sporadiska. / Security and usability are often thought of as being contradictive. In this thesis, we explore the possibility of incorporating both security and usability in an access control GUI. The research is concentrated towards the part of the access control that is referred to as the event log. The purpose of the log is to store and present information about events that occur at monitored entry points. The intention of the research is to investigate to what extent it is possible to implement user requirements, while still complying with security and usability heuristics. A traditional interaction design process is conducted. Semi-structured interviews are held with respondents from two different target groups, to see if their needs differ. One of the groups consists of users who primarily do security related work, and the other one consists of users who have security as a secondary job assignment. The answers undergo a thematic analysis. The outcome of the analysis is four different themes, consisting of a total of 26 user requirements. The user requirements and the heuristics are taken into consideration when creating a prototype. The prototype is then subjected to a heuristic evaluation by experts. The results of this research indicate that the gathering of user requirements does aid the compliance with heuristics. Moreover, the user needs between the two groups do differ on several accounts. The requirements that originate from the first group can be thought of as more dynamic and instantaneous, while the other group has requirements that are more static and occasional.

A plug-in based tool for numerical grid generation

The presented research summarizes (1) the development of a rapid prototyping framework, (2) the application of advance meshing algorithms, data structures, programming languages and libraries toward the field of numerical surface-water modeling (NSWM), (3) the application of (2) in (1), and (4) a real world application. The result of the research was the development of a prototype grid generator tool, the Mesh Generation and Refinement Tool (MGRT). MGRT supports a customizable interface and plug-and-play functionality through the use of plug-ins and incorporates a plug-in based topology/geometry system. A detailed explanation of the data structures, algorithms, and tools used to construct the MGRT are presented. Additionally, the construction of a mesh of Mobile Bay is presented. This represents a real world application of the MGRT. This tool provides many benefits over current tools in NSWM, which include faster meshing and the ability the use any grid generator that can be plugged-in.

Study on Shan Gui: From Religious Text to Visual Representations

This is a diachronic study of Shan Gui 山鬼 (the ninth poem of the Nine Songs九歌). The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, I choose to study Shan Gui from a religious perspective. A lot of effort is made to return to the scenes of sacrifice in the Nine Songs, by studying the sacrificing locations, totems, myths, and rituals. Through the literary appreciation with interrelated materials injected into this poem, Shan Gui would be read as a drama of wu’s巫 (shamans) worship performance in this paper. Western religious theories are used in order to understand primitive Chu people better and to explore the general rules in primitive people’s religious lives reflected by Shan Gui. The second part is an image study of famous Shan Gui paintings, and a lot of attention is paid to the artistic tension through the image re-creation. During this paper, I would like to create a picture of how Shan Gui developed through history from a religious image to a romance figure, and the way this image stepped from people’s common sacred sense into the literati’s private world.
