Examining the Relationship Between Work-to-Family Conflict and Parenting Behavior

Cho, Eunae 31 August 2010 (has links)
Although work-family conflict (WFC) has been of particular interest to work-family researchers, little attention has been paid to the consequences of WFC that reside in the family domain. Research on WFC and child outcomes is especially scant. The current study addresses the gap in the literature by investigating the relationship between work-interfere-with-family (WIF) and three forms of parent-child interaction behavior (PB): physical and recreational PB (PRPB), cognitive and academic-oriented PB (CAPB), and passive and maintenance-oriented PB (PMPB). The mechanism by which WIF relates to PB was further investigated by examining negative emotion as a mediator and trait guilt as a moderator of the relationship. Employed parents of early school-aged children (n = 201) participated in the survey. Results indicated that both time- and strain-based WIF were negatively related to two types of active PB, PRPB and CAPB. However, negative emotion did not mediate the relationship between WIF and PB. With regard to the moderating role of trait guilt, support was found for PRPB. Theoretical and practical implications, as well as future directions, are discussed.

Suspicious Minds: An Analysis of Insanity and Legal Accountability in American Criminal Law

Laird, Jessica O 01 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the treatment of insanity in the criminal law and its implications for the concepts and mechanisms of legal accountability. In order to address this issue, I examined the historical background of the insanity defense and five specific cases that demonstrate the complications arising from insanity’s present legal condition. From this case study I drew the conclusion that, because liability to punishment requires particular internal conditions, criminal responsibility is the proper measure of legal accountability for insane persons. Ultimately, my research demonstrated that insanity occupies a unique position in both the theory of crimes and the theory of punishment and that a trial by jury is not the most appropriate way for adjudicating issues of insanity. In each of these spheres, judges consider how mental conditions relate to criminal responsibility and the role that juries play shrinks as the content of guilt shifts to criminal responsibility. For this reason, I conclude that judges are the best candidates for addressing insanity and its effect on criminal responsibility.

Théroux, Jean-Michel 08 1900 (has links)
The essay Au théâtre on meurt pour rien. Recounting of death without culprit, between Maeterlinck and Chaurette) compare different dramatic uses of death testimony under the perspective of Nietzsche’s genealogy of memory recording. To illustrate the assumption of a classic function given to the death witness – making sense out of death by locking it in a scenic quest for justice −, the essay summons typical characters in Eschyle, Shakespeare and Racine. Then, plays by the modern playwright Maeterlinck (Intérieur) and the contemporary playwright Normand Chaurette (Fragments d’une lettre d’adieu lus par des géologues, Stabat Mater II) are interpreted as inscribing their whole plot in a death term where no definite culprit is needed; on the other hand, further reading reveals different values given in both proposition to triviality and strangeness, as to the singularity of characters. Le plancher sous la moquette (The floor under the carpet) is a play in three acts and three levels of speech for two actresses. Three couples of sisters come back into the living room of an apartment, once a detective agency that remained printed in their child memories. Thematically, the play moves the classic bind in "film-noir" between investigation and the city, by introducing the time interferences associated with ghosts. Each one of the three acts cast a shadow over the two others by re-enacting the same elements on a different but strangely similar tone, thus bringing the audience to doubt the existence of what is not on stage: the past, the other rooms, Montreal. The logical longing the audience has for the truth will lead it to discover that the scenes don’t enlighten the dark, but reveal that death never escapes the coarseness of memory.

"Skammen bränner" : En litteraturstudie med fokus på beskrivningar av skuld och skam kopplat till alkoholmissbruk / "Burning shame" : A literature study with a focus on descriptions of guilt and shame associated with alcohol abuse

Ottosson, Madeleine, Chau, Hanh January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study was to gain an understanding about how people with a former alcohol abuse expresses and gives meaning to feelings of guilt and shame in autobiographical books. In particular the purpose of the study was to find out how the authors writes about feelings of guilt and shame, whether it was expressed explicitly or implicitly, and which meaning the authors gives to feelings of guilt and shame and how these feelings are related to each other. We randomly selected 8 autobiographical books by using different criterias. The foundation of this study was social constructionism, which is also a foundation for one of our analysis methods: discourse analyse. This analysis method was used for the analysis of the expressions that were made in an explicit way. The second analysis method we used for our results was a hermeneutic orientation, which was used for the expressions phrased in an implicit way. The main result of this study was that the authors expressed feelings of guilt and shame in different ways. It occurred both as explicit and implicit expressions and sometimes they described these feelings as if it was two feelings that intertwined and were very alike. Our conclusion is that these feelings are of significance for people with an alcohol abuse and that the authors gave these feelings a negative tenor.

Vem är syndabocken i den tragiska olyckan? : En kvalitativ studie om rapporteringen av bussolyckan i Sveg / Who is the scapegoat in the tragic accident? : A qualitative study about the news reporting of the bus accident in Sveg

Blomqvist, Linn, Lygnebrandt, Anna January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine how three newspapers covered the question of guilt while reporting about the bus accident in Sveg where three school children died. The questions examined were: How does the local newspaper Borås Tidning and Barometern and the evening newspaper Aftonbladet report about the question of responsibility of the bus accident in Sveg? What are the differences and similarities between the three newspapers? We made a discourse analysis of 23 news articles from three different newspapers. The result shows that the newspapers reported about possible reasons that caused the disaster. If the society had taken responsibility and maintained the road then maybe the bus had not crashed. The passengers are described as guilty because of their lack of using seat belts. Simultaneously the bus driver is represented as irresponsible who could have prevented the misfortune by not driving so recklessly. Another aspect of the question of responsibility produce the bus company as the scapegoat of the tragical incident because of the miserable working conditions. We discovered that the newspapers are driven by figuring out the question of guilt in order to give answers to the readers about the tragedy in Sveg. Conclusions drawn from this study are that the media coverage are influenced by news values like their proximity to the persons involved.

Can Humbert be Trusted with the Telling of His Tale?A Deconstructive Study of Binary Oppositions in Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita

Jangblad Jukic, Anna January 2013 (has links)
In Lolita, Humbert is obsessed with the 12-year-old Lolita. It is a vulgar and disturbing story which raises questions about morality and ethics. With a sophisticated and elegant narrative, Humbert manages to draw attention to language rather than to his actions. Through fancy prose style Humbert covers up and hides his horrible actions. His verbal game serves to manipulate his readers to accept Humbert´s feelings and actions and sympathize with him.  Humbert´s narration is very persuasive and the reader is easily fooled to concentrate on what he says rather than what he does. In this essay deconstructive method is used to analyse Lolita. The study shows how binary oppositions are used in Lolita and what effect they have on the reader´s comprehension of the text. The study presents a number of incongruities in Humbert´s telling of the story and therefore the essay argues that Humbert cannot be trusted with the telling of his tale.

La Motte, Pia January 2017 (has links)
The pupose of the study is to gain a deeper understandig of how sham and- guilt problems and coping strategies against shame and guilt are related to female abuse and addiction treatment. The study conducted five qualitative interviews with women who had previously been addicted to alcohol and/or drugs but had been drug-free for at least five years. Were conducted data were analyzed from a social constructionist perspectiv, as well with stamping theory and genus theory. The result showed that, according to their statements, the women had a greater tendency to feel shame and guilt for their addiction, compared to men. There was a discrepancy between perceived demands on "the good woman and mother" and women in addiction. The hidden abuse occurred often, being an outsider and marked as addictive woman and mother, created a destructive process of negative self-image, filled with shame and guilt. The coping strategies against shame and guilt were the perception of alcohol and drug dependency as a disease. The communities in women´s groups and in 12-steps programs, where women share their life experiences had contributed to their recovery.

The sample consisted of 16 patients of psychiatric protective treatment in Psychiatric hospital Bohnice, Praha, Czech republic. Collected data are various and they account for the heterogenity of research group. The main work result is a support for opinion that not only mental disorder, but also many other factors such as personality, substance abuse or poor impulse control, are responsible for the origin of offence and that patients are conscious of it and they don't interpret it only within the frame of mental disorder. The work highlights on the using of many ego mechanisms of defense to cope with feelings of guilt and...

Women’s bodies and Men’s Honour : Supporting Middle eastern migrant women who have experienced honour violence

Al, S. January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a study of gender and honour, focusing on NGO’s who work to support women in Sweden who have escaped honour violence. The purpose of this thesis is to find out and explain how they make sense of honour and more specifically, to investigate how does Swedish authorities can help the Middle Eastern women who are victims under this tradition. My focus through this thesis will be on the data analysis, moreover, using intersectionality as an analytical tool will help to explain the intersections which lead to the honour killings. The results show that the honour violence still exists in the Swedish society as well as the Middle East, in addition, some Middle Eastern people who moved to Sweden still believe and practice the honour culture in the Swedish society. More than that, I got the answers for all the research questions which helped me to clarify the relation between honour and its intersections which helped me to know the reasons why does the Honour violence/killings can happen. The answers agree that the honour violence is connected to the shame and guilt cultures. The meaning of honour is different in different cultures. Most of the honour related cases have women as victims. The honour has many intersections, most of them related to virginity, homosexuality, out marriage relations and rape. The Swedish organisations offer help for the victims of honour.  More than that, reading my thesis will give the reader the understanding of the phenomena of Honour, its intersections and how it does exist in the Middle Eastern culture and its old traditions. / Gender Studies
