No. of bitstreams: 1 texto completo.pdf: 3602512 bytes, checksum: 1ab027615369085e321be8cda2af7474 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-06-26 / Paragryllini Desutter is a Neotropical tribe of crickets with species distributed from southern Mexico to Brazil. Currently are known 24 species assigned to six genera: Benoistella Uvarov, 1939; Mexiacla Gorochov, 2007; Oaxacla Gorochov, 2007; Paragryllus Guérin- Méneville, 1844; Rumea Desutter, 1988; and Silvastella Desutter- Grandcolas, 1992. In this paper new taxa from the Brazilian Central Amazonia are described. The genus Rumea is reported for the first time from this region, represented by three new species from the Central Amazonian: R. zebra sp. nov., R. manauensis sp. nov. and R. tigris sp. nov. Also two new genera are described: Marciela gen. nov., including M. longipes sp. nov. from Brazil and M. crybelos (Nischk & Otte, 2000) comb. nov. from Ecuador; and Sperberus gen. nov. including only S. arboricolus sp. nov. The morphology of the male genitalia of the Rumea species is discussed and a new interpretation is proposed. For the illustration of the genitalia of males and females a photographic technique was used: the structure was immersed in glycerin and photographs were taken on different levels of focous. For the construction of the final images the free software CombineZM was used. The biogeography of the Paragryllini is discussed based on the known distribution of the species. This study contributes to the knowledge of the group, increases its geographical distribution, and may serve as a starting point for future research on the Paragryllini in Brazil.

On frontiers and discourses: a comparative study of the processes of physical integration between Brazil-Guyana and Mexico-Belize

William John Ebenezer Harris 01 April 2016 (has links)
This dissertation carries out a comparative analysis of the political processes leading up the construction of two transnational bridges in the Americas; these are the Takutu River Bridge linking Lethem, Region 9, Guyana and Bonfim, Roraima, Brazil; and the Hondo River Bridge linking Santa Elena, Cozoral, Belize and Subteniente López, Quintana Roo, Mexico. In so doing, the study is inserted in a wider body of researches that analyse the process of integration in the Americas through the use of physical infrastructure. The research further highlights how emerging powers use infrastructure as a means of regional power projection in their geopolitical spaces, particularly as it pertains to smaller contiguous neighbours. This analysis takes place in the historical context of countries of the global south and of different colonial traditions, recognising the need to foster integration, and achieve advancement in this regard through infrastructure. Methodologically, it is an interpretive qualitative study of bibliographical sources and executive speeches, using the comparative method to deduce modes of interaction between two emerging Latin American powers and two relatively small and isolated continental countries of the Anglophone Caribbean. It may be concluded that the two bridges were successfully constructed and inaugurated as part of wider projects for regional integration fostered by Mexico and Brazil for their regions of immediate geopolitical influence, and aided by historically strong bilateral relations in the area of territorial integrity and further, the contemporary transitioning in the search by Caribbean countries for new international partners as old linkages become less viable.

In January 1980, the CENTRATLAN Project Bode Verde I was conducted by collecting geophysical and geological data at the central portion of the Middle Atlantic Ridge, south of Ascensão Island. This research was done within an agreement between the US-American and Brazilian Navy. With the objective to describe the geology of the Bode Verde fracture zone and to understand the origins of this feature on the ocean floor and continental margin, bathimetric, gravimetric and magnetic data were collected. The analysis of the bathimetric data allowed to describe this feature as a doubled fractured zone, marked by two continuous troughs, parallel to each other, separated by a high with its own rift-valley. The gravimetric anomalies confirm this double feature, with the two observed gravimetric minimum corresponding to the two troughs of the fracture zone. These troughs separate a crustal block of approximately 40 km width. Based on gravimetric data it was possible to construct nine crustal sections of the fracture zone. They permitted to observe a thinning of the crust-mantle interface beneath the fracture walls. The interface crust-mantle that usually has a depth of 8-9 km, is only 5.5-6.0 km deep beneath the fracture walls with a crust thickness of about 2.0 km. The crustal thinning is caused by the ascent of mantle material. The hidrothermal alteration in the central trough of the fracture can be responsible for the minor crustal thinning observed in this part of the fracture zone. For the interpretation of the magnetic data was used a time scale of magnetic polarity between the Lower Cretaceous and Cenozoic and a spreading rate of the ocean floor of about 2.0 cm/year. For interpretation a thickness of 0.5 km was estimated for the basalt layer, which is responsible for the observed magnetic anomalies. lts thickness decreases in the fracture walls, being interrupted at the central trough fracture.

De Trazegnies Valdez, Carlos Fernando 18 August 2021 (has links)

Polarities of difference : how Wapichannao negotiate identities within a creole state

Hope, Stacy A. A. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnographic account of how the Wapichannao, who are situated in the Rupununi of Guyana perceive themselves within the nation-state. This is also an account of how non-Amerindian Guyanese envisage Amerindians as ‘past' peoples. Hence, distinctions are made between Amerindian and non-Amerindian—us vs. them—where both identities become placed as opposite poles within a continuum. Emphasis is placed on the shifting relationships between these poles, but more specifically, the cultural paradigm through which these relationships are made possible. This paradigm, I suggest, may be understood in terms of polarities of difference, with regard to which Amerindians are constantly ambiguating/negotiating, disjoining, and resignifying notions of ‘who they are'. This thesis evidences this paradigm through an ethnography of some of those aspects of Wapichannao culture—village work, the shop, joking activity, culture shows—that are considered to be traditional on the one hand, and modern on the other. In doing so, an incongruous trend emerges, on which makes the classic imagery of Amerindian ontological homogeneity much more complex. Therefore, this thesis moves from the more traditional aspects of Wapichannao culture towards the nation-state, in order to take into account aspects of Amerindian experience absent from classic ethnographic accounts.

Poços, potes e pedras: uma longa história indígena na Costa da Guayana / Pits, pots and rocks: A long indigenous history at the Guayana\'s Coast

Saldanha, João Darcy de Moura 22 March 2017 (has links)
Branco.

Les populations aux frontières de la Guyane : caractéristiques singulières et fécondités contrastées : une recherche menée dans les communes guyanaises de Maripasoula, Grand-Santi, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, Mana et Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock, ainsi que dans le municipio d'Oiapoque (Brésil) / Populations on the borders of French Guyana : contrasting fertility and singular characteristics : a research conducted in the Guyanese municipalities of Maripasoula, Grand-Santi, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, Mana and Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock, as well as in the municipality of Oiapoque in Brazil

Conan, Claude 09 July 2018 (has links)
French Guiana has the highest fertility level of all French regions and of other countries in South America and the Caribbean: on average, 3.3 children per woman estimated in 2018.This thesis aims to analyze the main determinants of fertility in French Guiana, particularly in border areas which present high birth rates. It draws on the results of a survey of women and men by questionnaire residing in four municipalities bordering Suriname in the West, and a border town with Brazil in the East. An additional survey was conducted in the municipality of Oiapoque in Brazil at the Guyanese border.Firstly, this thesis presents a historical and ethnological background that determine the current composition of the population of Guyana. Secondly, it examines the sociological characteristics of today’s Guyanese society, notably border municipalities where populations are economically and socially precarious, poorly educated and frequently migrating.Exploring the interaction between socioeconomic determinants, the level of contraceptive use, age at first birth, current number of children and fertility standards, our research findings show two different situations: demographic transition is almost complete in the East for women of Brazilian origin while in the West, for bushinenge women, demographic transition is just beginning. This research is based on the assumption that currently, fertility of bushinenge women is at a transition period between unregulated and regulated fertility.

Co-creating Knowledge, Understanding, and Action for Effective Natural Resource Conservation

Weber, Laura 2012 May 1900 (has links)
Previous research shows that socio-cultural factors play an important role in determining the outcomes of natural resource conservation. Conservationists have discovered that when such factors are not properly incorporated from the earliest planning stages, projects are often less successful than hoped and at times outright failures. Thus, several core values that vary among cultures were studied to examine their relationships to natural resources and conservation. This study investigated the relationships between natural resources and conservation and the 3 value orientations individualism, collectivism, and locus of control and socio-demographics in the North Rupununi, Guyana. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected in 5 villages (Annai Central, Apoteri, Rewa, Aranaputa, and Wowetta) via participant observation and mostly structured interviews of 167 local residents. Field research took place from January to November 2008, and interviews occurred from July to October of the same year. Analysis indicates the following results for this sample. Neither the individualism measurement used in this study not the locus of control scale showed many statistically significant associations, but some interesting patterns and trends appear in the case of locus of control. In contrast, the collectivism scale showed associations to several of the natural resource items. The main conclusions from the study are that to promote more successful conservation, professionals need to focus on several factors that promote more effective communication and negotiation. Developing equity among participants; empowering people through their own knowledge, influence, and options; establishing respect by and for all parties; co-creating a common mental model among the parties; and fostering the competence and confidence of all parties to actively participate in the negotiations are key to success. This can be especially tricky in cases in which the various parties come from different socio-cultural backgrounds, such as in the case of Western scientists working with remote indigenous peoples. Coming to a shared mental model and feelings of true equity among the parties is even harder then because the disparate backgrounds make common understanding difficult at best. However, it is that much more necessary when common backgrounds are absent. In such cases, a well-trained, culturally sensitive, and neutral facilitator can be the most useful tool to help co-create the right circumstances for authoring solutions which foster natural resource conservation that can succeed.

Guyana REDD+ Model and Amerindian Rights

2013 March 1900 (has links)
Guyana’s REDD+ model features the placement of almost all of the country’s rainforest under long-term protection in return for monetary incentives that will be used to move the country along a low carbon development trajectory. It is a model of forestry preservation and sustainable development that the Government of Guyana is developing in partnership with the Government of Norway. This model of development is part of the global climate change mitigation scheme, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation plus (REDD+). REDD+ is a series of initiatives focused on/in developing countries seeking to diminish carbon dioxide emissions caused by deforestation and degradation, processes recognized as being one of the leading causes of climate change. It aims to dramatically reduce these emissions by creating an incentive mechanism that will pay developing countries to halt destructive processes that lead to deforestation and degradation. Guyana’s REDD+ model has significant implications for Amerindians who occupy the forested regions of Guyana, where most REDD+ related activities are scheduled to take place. Although this model is developing in a context where the legal and political regime governing Amerindians is weak, the treatment of Amerindians in REDD+ development leaves much to be desired in terms of both recognition and protection of important human rights. This Thesis reviews Guyana’s pioneering REDD+ model to show that it is failing to safeguard Amerindian rights recognized under international human rights law. Within the framework of the law, it argues that Guyana’s actions are contrary to its international obligations regarding indigenous peoples. Appropriate measures that should be adopted by Guyana to safeguard Amerindian rights are explored and proposed in this thesis. Possible measures that can be adopted by Norway, the World Bank, and the international community to motivate Guyana to undertake reforms are also examined.
