In this paper, hexagonal grid is extended to hierarchical structure. This technique can be applied to collision detection. By using concept of node, we develop an effectually linear decode called ¡§HCD¡¨. To develop to three dimensions, the structure of octahedron is applied to develop hexagonal hierarchical structure in three dimensions. This is helpful to simulate objects and approximate objects. The object¡¦s data is commonly deposited in float. In this paper, Symmetrical Hexagonal Frame makes whole object to be deposited in integer. So the data of object can be compressed to smaller size. Otherwise, by concept of k-dops, we can close to object¡¦s real surfaces with hierarchical hexagonal structures at low level.

Human-centred design: The tailwind to green marine transportation : A qualitative study on the advantages HCD has on the acceptance of green marine technologyAlostaz, Rana January 2023 (has links)
Marine transportation in EU currently emits 18% of the total global marine CO2 emissions, which is approximately 140 million tonnes of CO2. In response to this, new regulations aim to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by the year 2030, therefore, green innovations in marine technology are more important than ever. However, reducing carbon emissions requires people to accept these new technologies. In this paper, I explore the role of human-centred design in technology acceptance by using some methods in the design process. The design process included various methods such as user-, heuristic evaluations, expert reviews, role-playing, parallel prototyping, and prototyping. I studied, evaluated, and redesigned the interface of EcoPilot, that is a product which calculates, decreases, and optimizes fuel consumption in marine transportation. The design process of EcoPilot resulted in increased knowledge about the current user experience of marine technology aimed at reducing carbon emissions, as well as conclusions and reflections on how human-centred Design can improve the experience and promote the acceptance of new green technology.

An essential part of combating climate change is to reduce energy consumption. As the industrial sector was accountable for approximately a third of the total global carbon dioxide equivalents in 2019, it is crucial for industries to manage their energy usage. Research within the field of eco-feedback shows that visualising energy data can inspire energy reductions and promote knowledge. The thesis investigates how a dashboard for energy data visualisations for the industrial sector can be designed to be usable and to inspire behavioural change for its end users. Usability is researched in terms of initial learnability and subjective satisfaction. Perceived behavioural change is studied through changes in users' awareness and attitude towards energy management. A prototype of a dashboard for energy data visualisations is developed through three iterations of the HCD process. During the first iteration, a paper prototype is developed, and evaluated through a workshop. During the second iteration, the paper prototype is translated into a digital prototype, which is then translated into a software prototype. The software prototype is evaluated through end-user tests at the end of the second iteration. During the third iteration, the software prototype is improved, based on the input from the previous evaluation, and then evaluated through end-user tests. The usability of the software prototype is evaluated through the think-aloud method and a SUS questionnaire. Perceived behavioural change is evaluated by interviewing the test users about their change in attitude and awareness after using the dashboard. The thesis finds that the dashboard prototype was easy to use and interpret. The following design choices were concluded to contribute to the usability in terms of initial learnability and subjective satisfaction: visually separating information, information adjacency, adding explanatory texts, using colour as a visual encoding, using a colour scheme that provides contrast and consistency, filtering data through multi-select, providing different options for visualisation, using interactivity for further data exploration, giving the user response to actions, considering chart junk and the data-ink ratio, and using unambiguous icons. In addition, the thesis concludes that the dashboard inspired changes in both the user's awareness and attitude towards energy management. The design choices that were proven to affect the user's awareness and attitude were: letting the user choose their preferred unit to represent the data, presenting the user with tips, providing internal and external data comparisons, visualising multiple energy-related key figures, allowing for historic comparison, reminding the user of upcoming activities, presenting a list of scheduled measures and providing feedback of a prognosticated proposed measure in terms of its intended effects.

Interviewswith the target group and experts were carried out to collect experiences andknowledge, and image analyzes of existing instructional material were carried out.The methodical work resulted in design points which works as the basis for thechoices in the new instructional material. The work asked how cognition andnorm criticism can visually characterize visual material of this type, whichresulted in a representation without depicting gender, age, ethnicity, etc. As wellas an image material that stands out for its user perspective and adaptation to thetarget group. / Det här är ett arbete inom Informationsdesign med inriktning informativillustration. Intervjuer med målgruppen och expert utfördes för attsamla in erfarenheter och kunskap, samt utfördes bildanalyser av befintligtinstruktionsmaterial. Det metodiska arbetet resulterade i gestaltningspunkter somligger till grund för valen i det nya instruktionsmaterialet. Arbetet frågade hurkognition och normkritik visuellt kan prägla ett bildmaterial av denna typ vilketresulterade i en gestaltning helt utan skildrande av kön, ålder, etnicitet m.m. Samtett bildmaterial som utmärks för dess användarperspektiv och anpassning tillmålgruppen.

Encouragement for sustainable pension : A better understanding for sustainability in regards to pension savings / Uppmuntran till hållbar pension : En bättre förståelse för hållbarhet i relation till pensionssparandeLindberg, Samuel January 2017 (has links)
Sustainability is more relevant than ever and has forced the pension industry to acknowledge new types of responsibilities during the last decades. Sustainable pension is based on the investing strategy, social responsible investment (SRI), which implies that pension funds should not solely focus on a good return of their investment, but also care for the social and economical welfare. Research has been conducted on the area of SRI and pension during the last decades but a gap has been identified as to how this research was eventually communicated to the customers. This thesis addresses this in two parts for the target group business customers. Firstly, to meet future demands in the pension industry, a better knowledge is needed of how the business customers understand what sustainable pension really is. This thesis aims to address this by answering the question “What are business customers’ understandings of sustainability and pensions?” Secondly, customers increasingly ask what impact their money is having on sustainability. In answer to this demand, a prototype with a concretization of sustainable pension savings was developed and evaluated, following a Human-Centered Design process throughout the thesis project. Interviews were conducted with pension experts and business customers. Results showed that business customers do not make a connection between sustainability and pension, that sustainability is diffuse and hard to understand in the financial setting, and that pension is too far from the operative business and perhaps the employees’ own responsibility. When explained, the belief was that sustainable pension is something positive. But preconceived notions about it being expensive and non-lucrative are factors that discourages. The final evaluation of the prototype was done with a user test that featured three of the four business customers from the interviews. Results pointed to that the business customers think that sustainable pensions became more understandable, that sustainable pension became more concrete, that it was interesting, fresh and that it broke new ground. The user test also revealed that rebound effects is a potential risk with sustainable pension, as participants expressed that they feel better and compensated with their own CO2 emission after they learned about the positive effects of a sustainable pension. / Hållbarhet är mer relevant än någonsin och har tvingat pensionsbranschen att erkänna nya typer av ansvar under de senaste decennierna. Hållbar pension är baserat på investeringsstrategin, ”social responsible investment” (SRI), som medför att pensionsfonder inte enbart ska fokusera på god avkastning, utan även ta hänsyn till social och ekonomisk välfärd. Forskning har utförts på området SRI ihop med pension under de senaste decennierna och ett kunskapsglapp har blivit identifierat kring hur denna forskning sedermera har kommunicerats vidare till kunderna. Den här avhandlingen adresserar det här i två delar för målgruppen företagskunder. För det första, för att möta framtida krav i pensionsbranschen, behövs det en bättre kunskap för hur företagskunders förståelse för hållbar pension är. Den här avhandlingens mål är att ta sig an detta genom att besvara frågan: ”Vad är företagskunders förståelse för hållbarhet och pension?”. För det andra, kunder frågar allt mer frekvent vilken skillnad deras pengar gör för hållbarhet. För att svara på detta har en prototyp med konkretiseringar av hållbar pension utvecklats och utvärderats. Prototypen följde en Human-Centered Design process genom hela projektet. Intervjuer utfördes med pensionsexperter och företagskunder. Resultat visade att företagskunder inte kopplar hållbarhet till pension, att hållbarhet är diffust och svårt att förstå i en finansiell kontext, och att pension är alldeles för långt från den operativa verksamheten och möjligtvis den anställdes eget ansvar. När det förklarades, upplevdes hållbar pension som någonting positivt. Men förutfattade meningar att det skulle vara dyrt och icke lukrativt är faktorer som avskräcker. Den slutgiltiga utvärderingen av prototypen gjordes med ett användartest med representanter från tre av de fyra företagen från intervjuerna. Resultaten pekade på att företagskunder tyckte att hållbar pension blev mer lättförståeligt, att hållbar pension blev mer konkret, att det var intressant, fräscht och att det bröt ny mark. Användartestet avslöjade också att ”rebound effects” är en potentiell risk med hållbar pension, då deltagarna uttryckte att det kändes bättre och att de blev kompenserade för deras egna CO2 utsläpp efter att de fick veta de positiva effekterna av hållbar pension.

Implementing Total Quality Management Philosophy through Human Capital Development: An Exploratory Study of Selected Ready-Made Garment Establishments in BangladeshMahmud, Qazi M. January 2022 (has links)
The significance of human capital development (HCD) from an organizational perspective is
adequately reflected in the extant literature; however, its inherent connection with total quality
management (TQM) philosophy is yet to be investigated. Hence, this study intends to explore
the role of HCD in implementing TQM philosophy and to develop a comprehensive HCD
framework in this respect. The labor-intensive Bangladesh ready-made garment sector is used
as the research site since the phenomenon under inquiry is not readily evident in the chosen
setting. The interpretivist worldview is espoused in this exploratory research to accomplish the
research aim. Correspondingly, an inductive approach followed by a qualitative multiple case
study methodology is adopted. Five (5) RMG establishments are purposively selected as case
organizations. Thirty (30) in-depth interviews (6 from each case organization) are conducted,
using the semi-structured interview technique to generate rich and thick primary data.
Reflexive thematic analysis is manually performed to analyze the interview transcripts.
Findings imply that HCD engenders three major effects: reduced costs of operations, improved
product quality, and on-time shipment. Thereby HCD ensures greater customer satisfaction and
loyalty, which is the essence of TQM philosophy. Empirical evidence specifically suggests that
HCD can contribute to TQM implementation by empowering employees to reliably participate in problem solving and decision-making, innovatively perform tasks, and effectively
accomplish appropriate changes in work processes and procedures. This study contributes to
the knowledge by evidencing the fact that an HCD framework integrating both learning and

In Sweden, there are students who live in small student apartments. These apartments can be called compact living as a student apartment can be as small as 16 square meters. To take advantage of the place that is in small homes, it would be good if larger furniture could be combined into a piece of furniture. On behalf of Husmuttern AB, this work has been aimed at exploring furniture concepts with sleeping and their functions in a compact living environment for students. The issues being examined are: - What functions are desirable in a multifunctional seating and sleeping furniture for students and people living in compact living environments? - How can a multifunctional seating and sleeping furniture be designed, that is applied to students living in a compact-living environment? Human Centered Design was used as a method and thus a qualitative data collection was carried out in the form of observations. The respondents were in the primary target group and were observed in their everyday lives in their homes. A focus group was involved in generating ideas and concepts. Functional prototypes were built, and 3D models were created in SolidWorks. Digital testing of the concepts was carried out and the development of the Generation Sofa Bed was realized. There is a discussion about how reliable this study is, when the results became situational. However, the respondents were from a limited audience and had different views on what they wanted from a sofa bed, which provided rewarding information for the development of the furniture. The conclusion is that while the Generation Sofa Bed needs to be further developed through testing and evaluation of storage facilities, it has great potential to become a finished product. / I Sverige bor det studenter i små studentlägenheter. De lägenheterna kan kallas för compact living då en studentlägenhet kan vara så liten som 16 kvadratmeter. För att ta vara på den plats som finns i små hem vore det bra om större möbler kunde kombineras till en möbel. På uppdrag av Husmuttern AB har detta arbete haft som syfte att utforska möbelkoncept med sov- och sittfunktioner i en compact living miljö för studenter. De frågor som undersöks är: 1. Vilka funktioner är önskvärda i en multifunktionell sitt- och sovmöbel för studenter och personer som bor i compact living miljö? 2. Hur kan en multifunktionell sitt- och sovmöbel konstrueras, som är tillämpad för studenter som bor i compact-living miljö? Human Centered Design användes som metod och därmed genomfördes en kvalitativ datainsamling i form av observationer. Respondenterna var med i den primära målgruppen och observerades i sin vardag i sina hem. En fokusgrupp var med och genererade idéer och koncept. Funktionsprototyper byggdes och 3D modeller skapades i SolidWorks. Digital testning av koncepten genomfördes och utvecklingen av Bäddsoffan Generations blev förverkligad. Det finns en diskussion om hur pålitlig denna studie är, då resultaten blev situationsbaserade. Dock var respondenterna från en begränsad målgrupp och hade olika syn på vad de ville ha av en bäddsoffa, vilket gav givande information till utvecklingen av möbeln. Slutsatsen är att medan Bäddsoffan Generations behöver vidareutvecklas genom testning och utvärdering om förvaringsmöjligheter, så har den stor potential att bli en färdig produkt.

Day Master - Redesigning a planning board for people with cognitive disorder / Day Master – Omdesign av en planeringstavla för personer med kognitiv funktionsnedsättningBygge, Mattias, Strand, Sofie January 2019 (has links)
In assistive technology, there are mainly two different users that needs to be taken into account when developing products. The first, and most important, is the end-user who requires the product in order to function and live a normal life. The second is the support person who, for some products, needs to assist the end-user by preparing it to be used. This report presents the master thesis project conducted by Mattias Bygge and Sofie Strand at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The client was Abilia, a company that research, develop, manufacture and sell assistive technology to people with impairments. This main goal of this project was to redesign a cognitive planning board. The product is used as a visual aid by people who has difficulties in planning daily activities and keeping track of time. In order to develop the product in a suitable way, a literature study and interviews with Abilia’s employees laid the foundation for the user studies that were conducted with end-users and support people. Several concepts were generated and five were evaluated against the original product and presented to the company. The two concepts that received the highest ranking, (1) Extra Hours and (2) Extra Hours Bistable, were further investigated and were eventually developed into one single hybrid concept. The final design proposal is Day Master, a flexible planning board intended for people with a cognitive impairment that impedes their ability to plan daily activities and keep track of time. The product visually displays time and weekdays by using coloured LED lights, which support people may program without difficulty to fit the end-user’s preference. The amount of hours is changeable with a range of 12-18 hours of daytime and with the remaining hours distributed to night-time. The accessories that have been developed for this products are a simple protective cover, and two holders, one for images and one for whiteboard markers. All accessories attaches to the planning board with magnets. / I hjälpmedelsteknologi är det fler än en användare som man måste ta hänsyn till när man utvecklar produkter. Den första och viktigaste är slutanvändaren som är den som behöver produkten i vardagen för att kunna leva ett någorlunda normalt liv. Den andra är stödpersonen som i många fall är den som förbereder produkten för användning av slutanvändaren. Denna rapport presenterar masterexamensarbetet utfört av Mattias Bygge och Sofie Strand på KTH Kungliga Tekniska Högskola i Stockholm. Kunden för projektet var Abilia, ett företag som utvecklar, tillverkar, och säljer hjälpmedel till personer med funktionsnedsättning. Målet med detta projekt var att omdesigna deras kognitiva planeringstavla. Produkten används som ett visuellt hjälpmedel av personer som har problem med tidsuppfattning och planering av aktiviteter. Projektet inleddes genom en literaturstudie och intervjuer med personal på Abilia. Detta lade grunden för användarstudierna där både slutanvändare och stödpersoner deltog. Utifrån användarstudierna så genererades ett flertal koncept varav fem stycken evaluerades mot original produkten och som presenterades för företaget under en delpresentation. De två koncept som erhöll högsta ranking i evalueringen var (1) Extra Hours och (2) Extra Hours Bistable. Koncepten undersöktes ytterligare och kom slutligen att kombineras till ett gemensamt koncept. Det slutgiltiga designförslaget är Day Master, en flexibel planeringstavla som riktar sig mot personer med en kognitiv funktionsnedsättning som försvårar för dem att hålla koll på tiden och planera aktiviteter. Produkten visar tid och veckodagar visuellt med hjälp av färgade LED lampor som stödpersonerna lätt och intuitivt kan programmera för att passa slutanvändarens individuella behov. Day Master ger möjligheten att själv bestämma antalet timmar som distribueras mellan dag och natt. Den har ett spann på 12-18 timmar för dagtid och återstående timmar läggs på natttid. Tillbehören som har utvecklats för denna produkt är ett enkelt magnetiskt plastskydd och två stycken olika ställ, ett för bilder och ett för whiteboardpennor. Alla tillbehör fästs på whiteboardtavlan med hjälp av magneter.
