In assistive technology, there are mainly two different users that needs to be taken into account when developing products. The first, and most important, is the end-user who requires the product in order to function and live a normal life. The second is the support person who, for some products, needs to assist the end-user by preparing it to be used. This report presents the master thesis project conducted by Mattias Bygge and Sofie Strand at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The client was Abilia, a company that research, develop, manufacture and sell assistive technology to people with impairments. This main goal of this project was to redesign a cognitive planning board. The product is used as a visual aid by people who has difficulties in planning daily activities and keeping track of time. In order to develop the product in a suitable way, a literature study and interviews with Abilia’s employees laid the foundation for the user studies that were conducted with end-users and support people. Several concepts were generated and five were evaluated against the original product and presented to the company. The two concepts that received the highest ranking, (1) Extra Hours and (2) Extra Hours Bistable, were further investigated and were eventually developed into one single hybrid concept. The final design proposal is Day Master, a flexible planning board intended for people with a cognitive impairment that impedes their ability to plan daily activities and keep track of time. The product visually displays time and weekdays by using coloured LED lights, which support people may program without difficulty to fit the end-user’s preference. The amount of hours is changeable with a range of 12-18 hours of daytime and with the remaining hours distributed to night-time. The accessories that have been developed for this products are a simple protective cover, and two holders, one for images and one for whiteboard markers. All accessories attaches to the planning board with magnets. / I hjälpmedelsteknologi är det fler än en användare som man måste ta hänsyn till när man utvecklar produkter. Den första och viktigaste är slutanvändaren som är den som behöver produkten i vardagen för att kunna leva ett någorlunda normalt liv. Den andra är stödpersonen som i många fall är den som förbereder produkten för användning av slutanvändaren. Denna rapport presenterar masterexamensarbetet utfört av Mattias Bygge och Sofie Strand på KTH Kungliga Tekniska Högskola i Stockholm. Kunden för projektet var Abilia, ett företag som utvecklar, tillverkar, och säljer hjälpmedel till personer med funktionsnedsättning. Målet med detta projekt var att omdesigna deras kognitiva planeringstavla. Produkten används som ett visuellt hjälpmedel av personer som har problem med tidsuppfattning och planering av aktiviteter. Projektet inleddes genom en literaturstudie och intervjuer med personal på Abilia. Detta lade grunden för användarstudierna där både slutanvändare och stödpersoner deltog. Utifrån användarstudierna så genererades ett flertal koncept varav fem stycken evaluerades mot original produkten och som presenterades för företaget under en delpresentation. De två koncept som erhöll högsta ranking i evalueringen var (1) Extra Hours och (2) Extra Hours Bistable. Koncepten undersöktes ytterligare och kom slutligen att kombineras till ett gemensamt koncept. Det slutgiltiga designförslaget är Day Master, en flexibel planeringstavla som riktar sig mot personer med en kognitiv funktionsnedsättning som försvårar för dem att hålla koll på tiden och planera aktiviteter. Produkten visar tid och veckodagar visuellt med hjälp av färgade LED lampor som stödpersonerna lätt och intuitivt kan programmera för att passa slutanvändarens individuella behov. Day Master ger möjligheten att själv bestämma antalet timmar som distribueras mellan dag och natt. Den har ett spann på 12-18 timmar för dagtid och återstående timmar läggs på natttid. Tillbehören som har utvecklats för denna produkt är ett enkelt magnetiskt plastskydd och två stycken olika ställ, ett för bilder och ett för whiteboardpennor. Alla tillbehör fästs på whiteboardtavlan med hjälp av magneter.

Syfte - Syftet med denna forskning är att främja förståelsen av hur slutanvändarbehov beaktas vid utformningen och genomförandet av offentliga e-tjänster. Metod - Forskningen genomfördes med en fallstudieapproach på Skatteverket, där fyra olika utvecklingsprojekt för e-tjänster undersöktes. Data samlades huvudsakligen in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer men även genom interna dokument och observationer. Resultat - Det används ingen enskild utvecklingsmetodik för att utveckla e-tjänster. Istället används flera olika metoder som i varierande omfattning lånar från Scrum eller andra agila metoder, samtidigt som metoderna styrs av ett underliggande sekventiellt tänk som liknar vattenfall-modellen. Vidare är det inte utvecklingsteamen som främst definierar eller fångar in slutanvändarbehov, utan teamen förlitar sig istället på projektexterna källor för detta. Det kan också konstateras att projekten i stor utsträckning inte utför någon systematisk uppföljning kring om slutanvändarnas behov har uppfyllts eller inte av den utvecklade e-tjänsten. Uppföljningen som görs är ofta informell eller endast muntlig och verkar vara hopslagen med att undersöka nya användarbehov och förbättringsområden. Bidrag – Det teoretiska bidraget omfattar bland annat att det visas att det finns flera sätt att utveckla e-tjänster på och att det i praktiken inte är en typ av utvecklingsmetod som följs utan snarare hybridmetoder. Luckor i teorin har också identifierats i form av vem som är tänkt att vara ansvarig för att upptäcka och definiera slutanvändarbehov samt vem som är i kontakt med slutanvändaren. En annan teoretisk lucka finns i hur uppföljning och utvärdering i ett e-tjänstutvecklingssammanhang bör utföras. Studiens empiriska bidrag betonar vikten av att involvera slutanvändare genom hela utvecklingsprocessen, behovet av att förtydliga ansvarsområden i och utanför utvecklingsteam och behovet av att införa systematiska uppföljningsprocesser om intresse finns av att mäta nyttan av människocentrerad utveckling. / Purpose - The purpose of this research is to advance the understanding of how end user needs are considered when designing and implementing government e-Services. Method - The research was conducted using a case study approach, investigating four different e-Service development projects at the Swedish Tax Agency. Data was mainly collected by conducting semi-structured interviews, but also through gathering internal documents and observations. Findings - There is no single development methodology used for developing e-Services. Instead several different methodologies are used and that they, in varying extent, borrow from Scrum or other agile methodologies while still being steered by an underlying sequential approach similar to the waterfall model. Furthermore, the development teams do not define nor capture many end user needs, but rather rely on project external sources for this. Also discovered was that the projects to a large extent do not perform any systematic follow-up to whether user needs have been met or not with the e-Service developed. The follow-up that is done is often informal or only oral and seem to be intermingled with deducing new user needs and improvement areas. Contributions - Conceptual contributions include showing that there are multiple ways of developing e-Services and that in practice not one type of development model is followed, but rather hybrid methodologies. Gaps in theory have also been identified: who is supposed to be responsible for discovering and defining end user needs as well as who is in contact with the end user; and how to view and perform follow-up and evaluation in an e-Service development context. The study’s empirical contributions highlight the importance of end user involvement through the entire development process; the need to clarify areas of responsibility in and outside the development teams; and the need for introducing systematic follow-up procedures if interested in measuring the benefits of HCD.

Research has shown that literacy acquisition and the ultimate realisation of literacy, comprehension of the written text requires more than the ability to decode individual words. This study brings together a synthesis of current research on early language acquisition, language structure, vocabulary development and its intrinsic underpinning of comprehension in monolinguals thereby providing a theoretical framework for a comparative study of limited English proficient learners (LEP’s)/English language learners (ELLs) acquiring first time literacy with the attendant vocabulary deficits and age appropriate decoding skills. A quantitative and qualitative study examines the statistical differences between reading, vocabulary, rapid automatic naming (RAN/decoding) and comprehension when a learner born of foreign parents acquires first time literacy in a language other than the language spoken at home. The study isolates and specifies an at risk educational minority through the identification of a hidden comprehension deficit (HCD). In summarising the main findings from the literature review and the empirical investigation, an “at risk educational minority” was identified and isolated through the identification of the HCD. In recent years, generative AI has made significant strides, likely leaving an irreversible mark on contemporary society. The launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT 3.5 in 2022 manifested the greatness of the innovative technology, highlighting its performance and accessibility. This has led to a demand for implementation solutions across various industries and companies eager to leverage these new opportunities generative AI brings. This thesis explores the common operational challenges faced by a small-scale Tech Enterprise and, with these challenges identified, examines the opportunities that contemporary generative AI solutions may offer. Furthermore, the thesis investigates what type of generative technology is suitable for adoption and how it can be implemented responsibly and sustainably. The authors approach this topic through 14 interviews involving several AI researchers and the employees and executives of a small-scale Tech Enterprise, which served as a case company, combined with a literature review.  The information was processed using multiple inductive thematic analyses to establish a solid foundation for the investigation, which led to the development of a Proof of Concept. The findings and conclusions of the authors emphasize the high relevance of having a clear purpose for the implementation of generative technology. Moreover, the authors predict that a sustainable and responsible implementation can create the conditions necessary for the specified small-scale company to grow.  When the authors investigated potential operational challenges at the case company it was made clear that the most significant issue arose from unstructured and partially absent documentation. The conclusion reached by the authors is that a data management system powered by a Retrieval model in a LLM presents a potential path forward for significant value creation, as this solution enables data retrieval functionality from unstructured project data and also mitigates a major inherent issue with the technology, namely, hallucinations. Furthermore, in terms of implementation circumstances, both empirical and theoretical findings suggest that responsible use of generative technology requires training; hence, the authors have developed an educational framework named "KLART".  Moving forward, the authors describe that sustainable implementation necessitates transparent systems, as this increases understanding, which in turn affects trust and secure use. The findings also indicate that sustainability is strongly linked to the user-friendliness of the AI service, leading the authors to emphasize the importance of HCD while developing and maintaining AI services. Finally, the authors argue for the value of automation, as it allows for continuous data and system updates that potentially can reduce maintenance.  In summary, this thesis aims to contribute to an understanding of how small-scale Tech Enterprises can implement generative AI technology sustainably to enhance their competitive edge through innovation and data-driven decision-making.
