Fruit and Vegetable Identification Using Machine Learning

Olsson, Adam, Femling, Frida January 2018 (has links)
This report describes an approach of creating a system identifying fruit and vegetables in the retail market using images captured with a video camera at- tached to the system. The system helps the customers to label desired fruits and vegetables with a price according to its weight. The purpose of the sys- tem is to minimize the number of human computer interactions, speed up the identification process and improve the usability of the graphical user interface compared to existing systems. To accomplish creating a system improving these properties, an idea of implementing machine learning to identify the products aroused. Instead of assigning the responsibility to the user, who usually iden- tify the products manually, the responsibility is given to a computer. To classify an object, different convolutional neural networks have been tested and retrained. The networks have been retrained on data sets collected from ImageNet. To improve the accuracy, the networks have also been retrained on images where the background environment is similar to the environment the networks are supposed to perform in. The networks tested in this report are MobileNet and Inception. The networks have different propagation time and varies in accuracy. MobileNet performs the classification about seven times faster than Inception, but Inception gives more accurate results. To improve the systems further, usability testing has been performed on the graphical user interface of existing system and resulted system. To test the usability, a heuristic evaluation has been performed in combination of a second test produced by the authors. The tests concluded that the resulted system was more user friendly compared to existing systems. The hardware of the system constitutes of a Raspberry Pi, camera, display, load cell and a case. The software includes Python-code to label an image, a graphical user interface to interact with the user and a server created with Node.js. The graphical user interface has been programmed with JavaScript supplemented with the React library. To conclude, implementing convolutional neural networks to classify images and developing a new user interface resulted in a faster identification process together with fewer usability flaws.

The theoretical framework used for this research relates the concepts of information and information systems for the healthcare, and then addresses the Information Retrieval systems and databases, entering the field of information architecture for evaluating the usability of these sources information. The methodological approach includes exploratory research whose first phase consisted of the heuristic evaluation of the PubMed database interface, using the guidelines proposed by Nielsen and Tahir (2002). The results of this analysis show that although these guidelines have been designed to build homepage, thirty-eight of them are suited to the PubMed interface. Therefore, it is inferred that these guidelines can be used for heuristic evaluation of databases focused on the area of Health regarding the usability of this database, it was observed that the interface has a well-structured architecture, is friendly and objective, and present numerous possibilities for search and retrieval of information. The second phase of empirical study took place through the application of prospective usability testing to measure user satisfaction database. These tests were done using a semi-structured questionnaire administered to resident doctors specialty of Internal Medicine, University Hospital Walter Cantídio the Federal University of Ceará, totaling 36% of participants. The results of this step show a good performance and a good user satisfaction PubMed regarding the usability of the database, considering that enables them to achieve their research goals with real effectiveness and efficiency, yet they do not know all the resources available to search and retrieval of information offered by this database.

Manberger, Johan, Mogren, Alexander January 2018 (has links)
The Swedish Transport Administration is accountable for the long-term planning and management of the Swedish road infrastructure. An important factor for the safety on our roads is the weather. By predicting the weather it is possible to reduce the risk for accidents. There are stations that measure weather conditions along the roads with the greatest risk of slipperiness and snow drift. Monitoring of these weather station is executed with a  software for quality control of data deviations. The Swedish Transport Administration wants to replace the present interface for quality control with a more user-friendly system. In this thesis, a prototype for a new interface for quality control was created. The interface was developed in accordance with aspects for useful web design and criterias produced in the preliminary study which evaluated the present interface. The new interface displays data deviations as geovisualizations. The interface was developed by using the PostgreSQL, PostGIS, Geoserver, OpenLayers and GeoExt softwares. The usability of the interface was evaluated by the target audience it is designed for. The evaluation consisted of a heuristic evaluation with user tests and questionnaires. The outcome revealed that participants' satisfaction varied. The conclusion was that the usability of the interface is acceptable but that it has potential for improvement.

How to improve the usability on a website : Evaluation and testing of a makeup-brand’s website in adapting to their target users with potential improvement suggestions

Franzén, Johanna January 2016 (has links)
Viva la Diva is a Swedish makeup-brand that has recently launched their new website. This website has not been tested with their end-users or target users. By using a heuristic evaluation and 12 Think aloud-tests several user problems have been discovered where the design needs improvements. Later in the article I present some suggestions on how to improve the user experience on the website, as well as fix the problems that I found during the evaluation and Think aloud-tests. I also provide Viva la Diva with a design suggestion for one of their pages that is not completely finished in the design. This work provides insights on how to use a heuristic evaluation and Think aloud-tests to discover usability problems on websites.

Usability in Patient-Oriented Drug Interaction Checkers : A Scandinavian Sampling and Heuristic Evaluation / Användbarhet i patientorienterade granskare för läkemedelsinteraktioner : En skandinavisk provtagning och heuristisk utvärdering

Vingen, David, Andrews, Elias J. January 2020 (has links)
Drug interactions are an important source of medical error. Studies have also shown it as a topic of particular interest to patients. To allow patients to participate in decision-making regarding their own health, they need to be empowered with information. This information must be provided through usable information systems. This thesis explored availability of drug interaction checkers in Scandinavia. It also explored the prevalence and characteristics of usability issues preventing patients from benefiting from these. Drug interaction checkers were sampled and described. Issue-based qualitative and quantitative data were gathered through heuristic evaluations. Patterns in the data were identified through descriptive statistics. Single-case and cross-case analyses explored emergent patterns in-depth. The findings were then interpreted side by side using a mixed-methods approach. The results showed the Scandinavian public faced with drug interaction checkers addressing healthcare professionals. They also showed a multitude of usability issues in these checkers. The issues were predominantly minor, but major issues were also identified in all but one of the checkers. Catastrophic usability issues were found in two of the checkers. These had the potential to lead patients to serious medical error. Results moreover showed the checkers lacking adaptive design, patient-oriented content, and a lack of adherence to basic design principles. A positive correlation was observed between system complexity and number of usability issues. This was suggested to result from lack of user-centered design approaches, or losing track of user goals while adding features over time. The result was a handful of generally professionally oriented drug interaction checkers known to be used by patients for their utility, but failing to accommodate them in terms of information and system quality. Empowering patients to participate in decision-making affecting their health asserts the need for developing patient-oriented information databases where these do not yet exist. These need to be presented through usable interfaces acknowledging patient behaviors.

Project Publizebra.se : Development of a user-centered special digital library service for self-publishing authors in Sweden

Koort, Hannes January 2019 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is the development of Publizebra.se, a user-centered special digital library prototype for self-publishing authors. The service is aimed to provide valuable information, features and resources in the production, marketing and distribution of books.    Digital libraries have in recent years started to play a role in providing self-published authors with the tools, information and services required to publish independently with standardized quality. The focus has been to promote self-publishing and avoiding the pitfalls of appalling cover art, poor editorial work or zero marketing. In Sweden no such digital library initiative exists, combined with the problem of relatively few self-publishing services providing the possibility of independent publishing, without stepping into any of the pitfalls above.   The development of Publizebra.se seeks to fill the gap of digital library initiatives for self-publishing in Sweden, aggregating and distributing the value-adding features and user needs of independent authors. The applied research follows a five-step design process associated with the methodology of user-centered design, consisting of strategy, discovery, information architecture, design and prototyping. Every step of the process encompassed methodologies for taking the development forward, while further relying on fundamental research of the environment and user needs. Heuristic evaluation and expert evaluation were conducted on the prototype by LIS and usability experts to assess its functionality and user-centered design. The feedback concluded the prototype to be accessible and easy to use, while indicating the need for additional development and improvements to visual and interaction design features prior to further testing.

Socio-instrumental Aspects in Usability Heuristic Studies: Systematic Review

Yodihartomo, Farrell January 2020 (has links)
Nowadays, usability mainly perceived as a basis of the instrumental evaluation of an information system (IS) capability. Notably, rule-of-thumb usability heuristic evaluation (HE) is widely known and used as a cost-efficient and effective inspection-based usability evaluation. However, it is evident in prior research that there is communicative action captured when users interact with a system. Accordingly, socio-instrumental (SI) perspective perceives a particular event of the user’s interaction toward system (social action) is composed of both instrumental aspect and social aspect. Our study aims to explain the completeness of recent HE studies, and also to describe underlying connections between inspection-based usability evaluation and socio-instrumental aspects. We conducted a qualitative systematic review throughout thirteen qualified documents we appraised from filtering out 89 documents which consist of research articles within the last five years and existing professional reports. In a qualitative manner, our study result has identified the qualified documents present a positive degree of completeness. We have also analyzed various usability problems that are connected with specific heuristics and SI aspects. It is evident in this study that the SI perspective has contributed to revealing the communicative rationale behind the user’s social action toward the system. In addition, we, therefore, suggest improvement suggestions for further works to address the shortcomings in the present study.

Medical counselling via video using WebRTC : User interface and user experience design / Medicinsk rådgivning via video med hjälp av WebRTC : Användargränssnitts-och interaktionsdesign

Lindblom, Marcus, Åhlin, Robin January 2019 (has links)
CareLigo is a medical technology company that supplies heart failure patients with a home-based care solution called OPTILOGG. OPTILOGG helps patients to keep track of their symptoms, provides medication instructions and educates them about their illness. CareLigo requested an expansion of OPTILOGG which would allow patients to talk to care providers via video communication. This thesis describes the creation of this video communication solution and how this can be done in the best way for both patients and caregivers. Based on literature studies on human-computer interaction, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, a standalone Android application was developed for care providers as well as an extension in OPTILOGG taking into account that the users of OPTILOGG are often elderly with multimorbidity. Three accessibility aids were added to the extension of the OPTILOGG Android application in addition to the video solution. The first helping addition was a touch area expansion for buttons. The second aid was a screen reader feature that vocally describes objects the user clicks on. The third tool was a speech recognition feature that allowed patients to navigate in OPTILOGG with voice. The video communication between the standalone care provider application and OPTILOGG was based on WebRTC and was developed using a software development kit from a cloud communications provider called Sinch.

Investing in Celebrities: A Study of the Use of Profiles as Representations of Investment Securities / Investera i kändisar: En studie av användningen av profiler som representationer av värdepapper

Laochaiyapruek, Pruek January 2017 (has links)
Walter is a new Swedish investment service website that uses famous people to represent investment securities. It differs from other websites that typically do not use human as investment options. Previous research exhibits that some users use professional financial advisers that they know as trusted sources; that incorporated information relates to user's investing and information seeking behaviour; and that usability of a website can affect perceived trustworthiness, ease of use, and ease of understandability. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how the profiles of famous people affect the decision making process in long-term investment service website and what information should be incorporated with the profiles. Heuristic evaluation, user testing with think aloud protocol, and interview are used to collect data from both usability experts and end users. Avanza website is used as an example of other websites to compare with Walter. The results show that the profiles can gain participants' interest and the participants tend to be positive towards them. They perceive the profiles as investment options and consider financial information together with their personalities. Additionally, financial information is still necessary for investment and it affects the perception of ease of use, trustworthiness, and understandability of the website. When comparing, Walter seems to be easier to use because of the lower amount of information, but Avanza seems to be more trustworthy because of the higher amount of information and the traditional look. The high amount of information affects the perceived understandability both positively and negatively depending on an individual. Lastly, half of the participants prefer to use Avanza due to the usability issues in Walter.

Art Value Experience : An Immersive Procedural Content Generation Tool for Personal Visualization of Meaningful Numbers

Zhang, Yufei January 2022 (has links)
We present a Research through Design project that explores design opportunities and challenges of a personal visualization tool in artistic settings. The research process includes technical material exploration, an approach where state-of-the-art enabling techniques are examined to inspire artistic design decision-making. We propose three experiential qualities of such a tool: uniqueness, memorability, and aesthetics. They also serve as the heuristics throughout the design and evaluation process, aiming for meaningful user experience of personal visualization. Furthermore, we present how proceduralism democratizes user-generated content creation, how immersiveness improves the overall virtual experience, and how various computer graphics techniques are combined to improve the accessibility, learnability, and usability of the tool.
